ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David Lang - Maker
David Lang is a maker and the co-founder of OpenROV, a community of ocean lovers who build underwater robots.

Why you should listen

David Lang is a maker whose craving for adventure turned him into an amateur ocean explorer. A few years ago Lang and NASA engineer Eric Stackpole went looking for lost gold (literally) in an underwater cave in the foothills of the Sierra Navada. But they weren't quite sure how to go about it. Without much expertise (or money), the two put initial designs for an underwater robot explorer online. Soon OpenROV was born: a community of citizen ocean explorers who build and constantly improve upon these small remote operated underwater robots.

Lang is also the author of Zero to Maker and a 2013 TED Fellow. He lives on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay.

01:32
So I want to give you a quick story故事
of how it got started開始.
31
80655
2981
01:35
So a few少數 years年份 ago, my friend朋友 Eric埃里克 and I
32

2271
01:37
decided決定 we wanted to explore探索 this underwater水下 cave洞穴
33

01:40
in the foothills山麓 of the Sierras塞拉斯.
34
88107
1858
01:41
We had heard聽說 this story故事 about lost丟失 gold
35
89965
1903
01:43
from a Gold Rush-era拉什時代 robbery搶劫,
and we wanted to go up there.
36
91868
2518
01:46
Unfortunately不幸, we didn't have any money
37
94386
1658
01:48
and we didn't have any tools工具 to do it.
38
96044
1823
01:49
So Eric埃里克 had an initial初始 design設計 idea理念 for a robot機器人,
39
97867
3200
01:53
but we didn't have all the parts部分 figured想通 out,
40
101067
2773
01:55
so we did what anybody任何人 would do in our situation情況:
41
103840
2212
01:58
we asked the Internet互聯網 for help.
42
106052
2038
02:00
More specifically特別, we created創建 this website網站,
43
108090
2532
02:02
openROVopenROV.comCOM, and shared共享
our intentions意圖 and our plans計劃
44
110622
2895
openROV.com 並分享我們的目的與計劃
02:05
For the first few少數 months個月, it was just Eric埃里克 and I
45
113517
2390
02:07
talking back to each other on the forums論壇,
46
115907
2530
02:10
but pretty漂亮 soon不久, we started開始 to get feedback反饋
47
118437
2088
02:12
from makers製造商 and hobbyists愛好者,
48
120525
1843
02:14
and then actually其實 professional專業的 ocean海洋 engineers工程師
49
122368
1994
02:16
who had some suggestions建議 for what we should do.
50
124362
3532
02:19
We kept不停 working加工 on it. We learned學到了 a lot.
51
127894
1764
02:21
We kept不停 prototyping原型, and eventually終於,
52
129658
2025
02:23
we decided決定 we wanted to go
to the cave洞穴. We were ready準備.
53
131683
2719
02:26
So about that time, our little expedition遠征
became成為 quite相當 a story故事,
54
134402
3440
02:29
and it got picked採摘的 up in The New York紐約 Times.
55
137842
2021
02:31
And we were pretty漂亮 much just overwhelmed不堪重負
56
139863
1812
02:33
with interest利益 from people who wanted a kit套件
57
141675
1783
02:35
that they could build建立 this open打開 ROVROV themselves他們自己.
58
143458
2521
02:37
So we decided決定 to put the project項目 on KickstarterKickstarter的,
59
145979
3289
Kickstarter
02:41
and when we did,
60
149268
1232
02:42
we raised上調 our funding資金 goal目標 in about two hours小時,
61
150500
2075
02:44
and all of a sudden突然,
had this money to make these kits.
62
152575
3205
02:47
But then we had to learn學習 how to make them.
63
155780
2195
02:49
I mean, we had to learn學習 small batch批量 manufacturing製造業.
64
157975
2165
02:52
So we quickly很快 learned學到了 that our garage車庫
65
160140
3260
02:55
was not big enough足夠 to hold保持 our growing生長 operation手術.
66
163400
2679
02:58
But we were able能夠 to do it, we got all the kits made製作,
67
166079
2156
03:00
thanks謝謝 a lot to TechShopTechShop,
which哪一個 was a big help to us,
68
168235
2707
03:02
and we shipped these kits all over the world世界
69
170942
2985
03:05
just before Christmas聖誕 of last year,
70
173927
1829
03:07
so it was just a few少數 months個月 ago.
71
175756
1782
03:09
But we're already已經 starting開始 to get video視頻
72
177538
1908
03:11

03:16
