ABOUT THE SPEAKER
James Randi - Skeptic and conjuror
Legendary skeptic James Randi has devoted his life to debunking frauds and investigating paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.

Why you should listen

James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but he is perhaps best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims.

Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a MacArthur "genius" grant in 1986. He's the author of numerous books, including The Truth About Uri GellerThe Faith HealersFlim-Flam!, and An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural.

In 1996, the James Randi Education Foundation was established to further Randi's work. Randi's long-standing challenge to psychics now stands as a $1,000,000 prize administered by the Foundation. It remains unclaimed.

Filmed:

Good morning.

1000
2000
Bo día.
00:18
Happy to see so many fine folks out here
1
3000
3000
Estou encantado de ver
tanta xente boa aquí
00:21
and so many smiling faces.
2
6000
2000
cun sorriso na cara.
00:24
I have a very peculiar
3
9000
2000
Teño unha formación, unha actitude
e un enfoque moi característico
00:26
background, attitude and approach
4
11000
2000
00:28
to the real world
5
13000
2000
con respecto ao mundo real
00:30
because I am a conjurer.
6
15000
2000
porque son ilusionista.
00:32
Now, I prefer that term over magician,
7
17000
3000
Prefiro este termo
no canto do de mago,
00:35
because if I were a magician, that would mean
8
20000
2000
porque de selo, iso significaría
00:37
that I use spells and incantations
9
22000
2000
que uso conxuros e feitizos
00:39
and weird gestures
10
24000
3000
e acenos estraños
00:42
in order to accomplish real magic.
11
27000
3000
co obxectivo de lograr
maxia de verdade.
00:45
No, I don't do that; I'm a conjurer,
12
30000
2000
Eu non fago iso,
son ilusionista
00:47
who is someone who pretends to be
13
32000
3000
unha persoa que simula ser
00:50
a real magician. (Laughter)
14
35000
3000
un mago de verdade.
00:53
Now, how do we go about that sort of thing?
15
38000
3000
Entón, como imos abordar este tema?
00:56
We depend on the fact
16
41000
2000
Dependemos de que vós,
o público
00:58
that audiences, such as yourselves,
17
43000
2000
01:00
will make assumptions.
18
45000
2000
vai facer presuposicións.
01:02
For example, when I walked up here
19
47000
2000
Por exemplo, cando cheguei aquí
01:04
and I took the microphone from the stand
20
49000
2000
e collín o micrófono do estrado
01:06
and switched it on,
21
51000
2000
e o acendín
01:08
you assumed this was a microphone, which it is not.
22
53000
2000
supuxestes que isto era un micro
pero non o é.
01:10
(Laughter)
23
55000
2000
01:12
As a matter of fact, this is something
24
57000
2000
De feito, isto é algo
01:14
that about half of you, more than half of you will not be familiar with.
25
59000
3000
co que a metade de vós
non está familiarizado.
01:17
It's a beard trimmer, you see?
26
62000
3000
É unha recortadora
para a barba, vedes?
01:20
And it makes a very bad microphone;
27
65000
2000
E é un micrófono pésimo,
01:22
I've tried it many times. (Laughter)
28
67000
2000
xa o probei moitas veces.
01:24
The other assumption that you made --
29
69000
2000
A outra cousa que supuxestes...
01:26
and this little lesson is to show you
30
71000
2000
E esta é unha lección para amosarvos
01:28
that you will make assumptions.
31
73000
2000
que facedes presuposicións.
01:30
Not only that you can, but that you will
32
75000
2000
Non só é que podedes,
senón que o facedes
01:32
when they are properly suggested to you.
33
77000
2000
se se vos presentan ben.
01:34
You believe I'm looking at you.
34
79000
2000
Pensades que vos estou mirando.
01:36
Wrong. I'm not looking at you. I can't see you.
35
81000
3000
Non. Non vou estou mirando.
Non podo vervos.
01:39
I know you're out there, they told me backstage, it's a full house and such.
36
84000
3000
Sei que estades aí, dixéronmo,
está cheo.
01:42
I know you're there because I can hear you,
37
87000
2000
Sei que estades aí porque vos escoito
01:44
but I can't see you because I normally wear glasses.
38
89000
3000
pero non podo vervos
porque uso lentes.
01:47
These are not glasses, these are empty frames. (Laughter)
39
92000
2000
Isto non son lentes,
é unha montura baleira.
01:49
Quite empty frames.
40
94000
2000
Unha montura baleira.
01:51
Now why would a grown man appear before you
41
96000
3000
Ben, por que se presentaría
ante vós un home adulto
01:54
wearing empty frames on his face?
42
99000
2000
cunhas lentes sen cristais?
01:56
To fool you, ladies and gentlemen,
43
101000
2000
Para enganarvos,
donas e cabaleiros,
01:58
to deceive you, to show that you, too,
44
103000
3000
para confundirvos e
ensinarvos que vós tamén
02:01
can make assumptions.
45
106000
2000
presupoñedes cousas,
nunca vos esquezades.
02:03
Don't you ever forget that.
46
108000
2000
Primeiro teño que pór
unhas lentes reais para vervos.
02:05
Now, I have to do something -- first of all, switch to real glasses
47
110000
2000
02:07
so I can actually see you,
48
112000
2000
02:09
which would probably be a convenience. I don't know.
49
114000
3000
A verdade sería un detalle. Non sei.
Non é un gran detalle tampouco.
02:12
I haven't had a good look. Well, it's not that great a convenience.
50
117000
2000
02:14
(Laughter)
51
119000
2000
Teño que facer algo
que é un pouco estraño para un mago.
02:16
I have to do something now, which seems
52
121000
2000
02:18
a little bit strange for a magician.
53
123000
2000
02:20
But I'm going to take some medication.
54
125000
2000
Vou tomar uns medicamentos.
02:22
This is a full bottle of
55
127000
2000
Isto é
un bote enteiro de Calms Forte.
02:24
Calms Forte.
56
129000
2000
02:26
I'll explain that in just a moment.
57
131000
2000
Explicareino nun intre.
02:28
Ignore the instructions,
58
133000
2000
Non lle fagades caso ás instrucións;
02:30
that's what the government has to put in there
59
135000
2000
iso é o que o goberno pon aí
02:32
to confuse you, I'm sure.
60
137000
3000
para confundirvos,
estou seguro.
02:35
I will take enough of these. Mm.
61
140000
2000
Tomarei abondas.
02:38
Indeed, the whole container.
62
143000
2000
Vou tomar todo o bote, de feito.
02:47
Thirty-two tablets of Calms Forte.
63
152000
3000
32 comprimidos de Calms Forte.
02:50
Now that I've done that -- I'll explain it in a moment --
64
155000
3000
Agora que xa o fixen
(e que explicarei logo)
02:53
I must tell you that
65
158000
2000
teño que dicirvos que
02:55
I am an actor.
66
160000
2000
son actor.
02:57
I'm an actor who plays a specific part.
67
162000
3000
Son un actor que ten
un papel en específico.
03:00
I play the part of a magician,
68
165000
2000
O meu papel é
o de mago
03:02
a wizard, if you will, a real wizard.
69
167000
3000
Se queredes,
un mago dos de verdade.
03:05
If someone were to appear on this stage in front of me
70
170000
3000
Se alguén se presenta
neste escenario diante de min
03:08
and actually claim to be
71
173000
2000
e afirma que
03:10
an ancient prince of Denmark named Hamlet,
72
175000
3000
é un antigo príncipe de Dinamarca
chamado Hamlet
03:13
you would be insulted
73
178000
2000
sentiriádesvos insultados,
e con razón.
03:15
and rightly so.
74
180000
2000
03:17
Why would a man assume that you would believe
75
182000
2000
Por que alguén pensaría que
que creriades tal barbaridade?
03:19
something bizarre like this?
76
184000
2000
Pero hai moita xente aí fóra
03:21
But there exists out there
77
186000
2000
03:23
a very large population
78
188000
3000
unha morea de xente
03:26
of people who will tell you
79
191000
2000
que vos dirá que teñen
poderes psíquicos e máxicos.
03:28
that they have psychic, magical powers
80
193000
2000
03:30
that they can predict the future,
81
195000
2000
Que poden predicir o futuro
03:32
that they can make contact with the deceased.
82
197000
2000
e que poden
contactar cos mortos.
03:34
Oh, they also say
83
199000
2000
Tamén din
03:36
they will sell you astrology
84
201000
2000
que vos venderán astroloxía
03:38
or other fortunetelling methods.
85
203000
2000
e outros métodos de adiviñación.
03:40
Oh, they gladly sell you that, yes.
86
205000
2000
Venderánvolos de boa gana.
03:42
And they also say
87
207000
2000
E tamén din
que poden darvos aparellos
de movemento perpetuo
03:44
that they can give you perpetual motion machines
88
209000
2000
03:46
and free energy systems.
89
211000
2000
e xeradores de enerxía gratis.
03:48
They claim to be psychics,
90
213000
2000
Afirman ser médiums
03:50
or sensitives, whatever they can.
91
215000
2000
ou sensitivos, o que poidan.
03:52
But the one thing that has made a big comeback
92
217000
3000
Pero o que está sendo
moi importante agora
03:55
just recently
93
220000
2000
03:57
is this business of
94
222000
2000
é o negocio de
03:59
speaking with the dead.
95
224000
2000
falar cos mortos.
04:02
Now, to my innocent mind,
96
227000
2000
Agora ben, para a miña mente inocente
04:04
dead implies
97
229000
3000
a morte implica
04:07
incapable of communicating. (Laughter)
98
232000
3000
incapacidade para comunicarse.
04:10
You might agree with me on that.
99
235000
2000
Igual estades de acordo comigo nisto.
04:12
But these people, they tend to tell you that
100
237000
3000
Pero esta xente intentará dicirvos que
04:15
not only can they communicate with the dead --
101
240000
2000
non só se poden comunicar cos mortos
04:17
"Hi, there" --
102
242000
2000
"Ei, que tal"
senón que tamén os poden escoitar
04:19
but they can hear the dead as well,
103
244000
2000
04:21
and they can relay this information back to the living.
104
246000
3000
e que lle poden transmitir
esta información aos vivos.
04:24
I wonder if that's true.
105
249000
2000
Será certo? Non o creo,
04:26
I don't think so, because
106
251000
2000
porque esta subcultura
04:28
this subculture of people
107
253000
2000
usa os mesmos trucos que
usamos os magos
04:30
use exactly the same gimmicks that we magicians do,
108
255000
3000
04:33
exactly the same --
109
258000
2000
–os mesmiños–
04:35
the same physical methods, the same psychological methods --
110
260000
3000
os mesmos métodos físicos
e psicolóxicos.
04:38
and they effectively and profoundly
111
263000
3000
Enganan profundamente
a millóns de persoas no mundo
04:41
deceive millions of people around the earth,
112
266000
2000
04:43
to their detriment.
113
268000
2000
para a súa desgraza.
04:45
They deceive these people,
114
270000
2000
Enganan a esta xente,
04:47
costs them a lot of money,
115
272000
2000
fanlle gastar moitos cartos
04:49
cost them a lot of emotional anguish.
116
274000
2000
e provócanlle moita angustia emocional.
04:51
Billions of dollars are spent
117
276000
2000
Gástanse miles de millóns de dólares
04:53
every year, all over the globe,
118
278000
3000
cada ano, en todo o mundo
04:56
on these charlatans.
119
281000
2000
nestes falabaratos.
04:58
Now, I have two questions
120
283000
2000
Ben, hai dúas preguntas
que me gustaría facerlles
05:00
I would like to ask these people
121
285000
2000
05:02
if I had the opportunity to do so.
122
287000
2000
de ter a oportunidade de facelo.
05:04
First question: If I want to ask them to call up --
123
289000
3000
Primeira: quero preguntarlles
se poden chamar...
05:07
because they do hear them through the ear.
124
292000
2000
porque os escoitan a través dos oídos.
05:09
They listen to the spirits like this --
125
294000
2000
Oen os espíritos así.
Voulles pedir que contacten
co fantasma da miña avoa
05:11
I'm going to ask you to call up the ghost of my grandmother
126
296000
3000
05:14
because, when she died, she had the family will,
127
299000
2000
porque cando morreu,
era ela quen tiña o testamento
05:16
and she secreted it someplace. We don't know where it is,
128
301000
2000
e agachouno nalgún lado.
Non sabemos onde está
05:18
so we ask Granny, "Where is the will, Granny?"
129
303000
3000
así que preguntámoslle:
"onde está, avoíña?"
05:21
What does Granny say? She says, "I'm in heaven and it's wonderful.
130
306000
3000
E que dixo a avoíña?
Dixo: "estou no ceo e isto é marabilloso.
05:24
I'm here with all my old friends, my deceased friends,
131
309000
2000
Estou aquí cos meus amigos,
05:26
and my family
132
311000
2000
a miña familia
05:28
and all the puppy dogs and the kittens that I used to have when I was a little girl.
133
313000
3000
e todos os cadeliños e gatiños
que tiven cando era unha cativa.
05:31
And I love you, and I'll always be with you.
134
316000
3000
Quérovos, e estarei sempre convosco.
05:34
Good bye."
135
319000
2000
Adeus."
05:36
And she didn't answer the damn question!
136
321000
2000
E non respondeu o demo de pregunta!
05:38
Where is the will?
137
323000
2000
Onde está o testamento?
05:40
Now, she could easily have said,
138
325000
2000
Porque tamén podería dicir:
05:42
"Oh, it's in the library on the second shelf, behind the encyclopedia,"
139
327000
2000
"No segundo estante,
detrás da enciclopedia"
05:44
but she doesn't say that. No, she doesn't.
140
329000
3000
Pero iso non nolo dixo, non.
05:47
She doesn't bring any useful information to us.
141
332000
3000
Non nos dou
ningunha información relevante.
05:50
We paid a lot of money for that information,
142
335000
2000
Pagamos moitos cartos por esa información
05:52
be we didn't get it.
143
337000
2000
e non a demos conseguido.
05:54
The second question that I'd like to ask, rather simple:
144
339000
3000
A segunda pregunta que lles faría
é bastante simple.
05:57
Suppose I ask them to contact
145
342000
2000
Supoñamos que lles pido que contacten
05:59
the spirit of my deceased father-in-law, as an example.
146
344000
3000
co espírito do meu sogro falecido,
por exemplo.
06:02
Why do they insist on saying --
147
347000
2000
Por que insisten en dicirche...
06:04
remember, they speak into this ear --
148
349000
2000
(lembra, fálanlle ao oído)
06:06
why do they say, "My name starts with J or M?"
149
351000
4000
Por que din:
"O meu nome empeza por J ou M?"
06:11
Is this a hunting game?
150
356000
2000
Estamos xogando ás adiviñas?
06:13
Hunting and fishing? What is it?
151
358000
2000
O gato e o rato? Que é?
06:15
Is it 20 questions? No, it's more like 120 questions.
152
360000
3000
Son 20 preguntas?
Non, máis ben 120.
06:18
But it is a cruel, vicious,
153
363000
3000
Pero é cruel, desapiadado
06:22
absolutely conscienceless --
154
367000
3000
totalmente de mala fe
06:25
I'll be all right, keep your seats (Laughter) --
155
370000
3000
(Estou ben, quedade nos asentos)
06:28
game that these people play.
156
373000
2000
ao que xogan estas persoas.
06:30
And they take advantage of the innocent, the naive,
157
375000
3000
Aprovéitanse dos inocentes,
dos inxenuos
06:33
the grieving, the needy people out there.
158
378000
3000
dos que sofren,
das persoas necesitadas.
06:36
Now, this is a process
159
381000
2000
Este é un proceso
que se chama lectura en frío.
06:38
that is called cold reading.
160
383000
3000
06:42
There's one fellow out there,
161
387000
2000
Hai un tipo que se chama
Van Praagh.
06:45
Van Praagh is his name, James Van Praagh.
162
390000
2000
É unha das eminencias
desta trapallada.
06:47
He's one of the big practitioners of this sort of thing.
163
392000
2000
06:49
John Edward, Sylvia Browne
164
394000
3000
John Edward, Sylvia Browne
06:52
and Rosemary Altea, they are other operators.
165
397000
3000
e Rosemary Altea son outros artistas.
06:55
There are hundreds of them all over the earth, but in this country,
166
400000
3000
Hai centos deles no mundo,
pero neste país
06:58
James Van Praagh is very big.
167
403000
2000
James Van Praagh é moi famoso.
07:00
And what does he do? He likes to tell you
168
405000
2000
E que fai? Gústalle contarche
07:02
how the deceased got deceased,
169
407000
2000
como faleceron os mortos.
07:04
the people he's talking to through his ear, you see?
170
409000
3000
(a xente que lle fala ao oído, vedes?)
07:07
So what he says is, very often, is like this: he says,
171
412000
3000
Pois o que di, normalmente, é así:
07:10
"He tells me, he tells me, before he passed,
172
415000
3000
"Ante de morrer, díxome
07:14
that he had trouble breathing."
173
419000
2000
que lle custaba respirar".
07:16
Folks, that's what dying is all about!
174
421000
2000
Home, iso é o que vén sendo morrer!
07:18
(Laughter)
175
423000
2000
07:20
You stop breathing, and then you're dead.
176
425000
2000
Paras de respirar e logo morres.
07:22
It's that simple.
177
427000
2000
Así de fácil.
07:24
And that's the kind of information they're going to bring back to you?
178
429000
3000
E ese é o tipo de información
que che van dar?
07:27
I don't think so.
179
432000
2000
Non o creo.
07:29
Now, these people will make guesses, they'll say things like,
180
434000
2000
Esta xente vai adiviñando,
din cousas como:
07:31
"Why am I getting electricity?
181
436000
2000
"Por que me chega esta electricidade?"
07:33
He's saying to me, 'Electricity.'
182
438000
3000
E dinme: "Electricidade".
07:36
Was he an electrician?" "No."
183
441000
2000
"Era electricista?"
-Non.
07:38
"Did he ever have an electric razor?" "No."
184
443000
2000
"Tiña unha afeitadora eléctrica?"
-Non.
07:40
It was a game of hunting questions like this.
185
445000
2000
Era un xogo de adiviñar, coma este.
07:42
This is what they go through.
186
447000
2000
E así saen do paso.
07:44
Now, folks often ask us
187
449000
2000
A xente pregúntanos moito
na Fundación James Randi
07:46
at the James Randi Educational Foundation,
188
451000
2000
07:48
they call me, they say, "Why are you so concerned about this, Mr. Randi?
189
453000
3000
chámanme e dinme:
"por que estás tan preocupado?
07:51
Isn't it just a lot of fun?"
190
456000
2000
Non é divertido?".
07:53
No, it is not fun. It is a cruel farce.
191
458000
3000
Non, non é. É unha farsa cruel.
07:56
Now, it may bring a certain amount of comfort,
192
461000
3000
Pode que che dea un pouco de consolo
07:59
but that comfort lasts
193
464000
2000
pero ese consolo dura uns 20 minutos.
08:01
only about 20 minutes or so.
194
466000
2000
08:03
And then the people look in the mirror, and they say,
195
468000
2000
Despois esa xente mírase no espello e di:
08:05
I just paid a lot of money for that reading.
196
470000
2000
Paguei moitos cartos por ese contacto.
08:07
And what did she say to me? 'I love you!'"
197
472000
3000
E que me dixo? "Quérote!"
08:10
They always say that.
198
475000
2000
Sempre din iso.
08:12
They don't get any information,
199
477000
2000
Non lles dan nada de información
08:14
they don't get any value for what they spend.
200
479000
2000
non obteñen nada polo que gastan.
08:16
Now, Sylvia Browne is the big operator.
201
481000
2000
Sylvia Browne é a máis viva.
08:18
We call her "The Talons."
202
483000
2000
Chamámoslle "a gadoupas"
08:20
Sylvia Browne -- thank you --
203
485000
2000
Sylvia Browne -grazas-
08:22
Sylvia Browne is the big operator
204
487000
3000
Sylvia Browne é a máis viva
08:25
in this field at this very moment.
205
490000
2000
agora mesmo neste negocio.
08:27
Now, Sylvia Browne -- just to show you --
206
492000
3000
Ben, Sylvia Brown (só para ensinárvolo)
08:30
she actually gets 700 dollars
207
495000
3000
cobra 700 dólares
08:33
for a 20 minute reading over the telephone,
208
498000
3000
por un contacto a través do teléfono
de 20 minutos.
08:36
she doesn't even go there in person,
209
501000
2000
Nin sequera vai alí en persoa
08:38
and you have to wait up to two years because
210
503000
2000
e tes que esperar ata dous anos
porque xa ten reservas
para todo ese tempo.
08:40
she's booked ahead that amount of time.
211
505000
2000
08:42
You pay by credit card or whatever,
212
507000
2000
Pagas con tarxeta de crédito
ou o que sexa
08:44
and then she will call you
213
509000
2000
e despois chámate
nalgún momento dos dous anos seguintes.
08:46
sometime in the next two years.
214
511000
2000
08:48
You can tell it's her. "Hello, this is Sylvia Browne."
215
513000
2000
Sabes que é ela.
"Boas, son Sylvia Browne".
08:50
That's her, you can tell right away.
216
515000
2000
É ela, non hai fallo.
08:54
Now, Montel Williams is an intelligent man.
217
519000
3000
Montel Williams é un home intelixente.
08:57
We all know who he is on television.
218
522000
3000
Vémolo na televisión.
09:00
He's well educated, he's smart,
219
525000
2000
Está formado, é listo
09:02
he knows what Sylvia Browne is doing
220
527000
2000
sabe o que fai Sylvia Browne
09:04
but he doesn't give a damn.
221
529000
2000
pero impórtalle un rabo de can.
09:06
He just doesn't care.
222
531000
3000
Tanto lle dá coma tanto lle ten.
09:10
Because, the bottom line is, the sponsors love it,
223
535000
3000
Ao cabo e ao remate,
aos patrocinadores gústalles
09:13
and he will expose her
224
538000
2000
e vana expoñer seguido
na publicidade.
09:15
to television publicity all the time.
225
540000
2000
09:17
Now, what does Sylvia Browne give you for that 700 dollars?
226
542000
3000
Que che dá Sylvia Browne por 700 dólares?
09:20
She gives you the names of your guardian angels, that's first.
227
545000
3000
Dáche os nomes dos teus anxos da garda.
09:23
Now, without that, how could we possibly function? (Laughter)
228
548000
3000
E que sen iso, como se pode vivir?
09:26
She gives you the names of previous lives,
229
551000
3000
Diche os nomes das túas vidas pasadas
09:29
who you were in previous lives.
230
554000
2000
e quen fuches noutra vida.
09:31
Duh.
231
556000
2000
Boh.
09:33
It turns out that the women
232
558000
2000
Resulta que todas as mulleres
09:35
that she gives readings for
233
560000
2000
ás que lles fai un contacto
09:37
were all Babylonian princesses, or something like that.
234
562000
3000
eran todas princesas babilonias, ou así
09:40
And the men were all Grecian warriors
235
565000
2000
e os homes eran guerreiros gregos
que loitaban con Agamenón.
09:42
fighting with Agamemnon.
236
567000
3000
09:45
Nothing is ever said about
237
570000
2000
Nunca se fala
09:47
a 14 year-old bootblack in the streets of London
238
572000
2000
da pequena limpadora de botas
de Londres
09:49
who died of consumption.
239
574000
2000
que morreu de tise.
09:51
He isn't worth bringing back, obviously.
240
576000
3000
Non paga a pena recordala.
09:54
And the strange thing -- folks, you may have noticed this too.
241
579000
3000
E o raro disto...
non sei se vos decatastes.
09:57
You see these folks on television --
242
582000
3000
Vedes estes tipos na televisión
10:00
they never call anybody back from hell. (Laughter)
243
585000
3000
e nunca chaman a ninguén do inferno.
10:04
Everyone comes back from heaven, but never from hell.
244
589000
3000
Todos volven do ceo,
ninguén do inferno.
10:07
If they call back any of my friends,
245
592000
2000
Se chamaran a algún dos meus amigos
10:09
they're not going to... Well, you see the story.
246
594000
2000
que non o van facer...
Xa se imaxinan.
10:11
(Laughter)
247
596000
2000
10:14
Now, Sylvia Browne is an exception,
248
599000
3000
Sylvia Browne é una excepción,
10:17
an exception in one way,
249
602000
2000
unha excepción só nun sentido.
10:19
because the James Randi Educational Foundation, my foundation,
250
604000
3000
Na miña fundación
10:22
offers a one million dollar prize in negotiable bonds.
251
607000
3000
ofrecemos 1 millón de dólares
en obrigas negociables.
10:25
Very simply won.
252
610000
2000
Doadísimo de gañar.
10:27
All you have to do is prove any paranormal, occult
253
612000
2000
Só tes que demostrar
un suceso paranormal,
10:29
or supernatural event or power of any kind
254
614000
2000
de ocultismo ou sobrenatural
de calquera clase
10:31
under proper observing conditions.
255
616000
2000
en condicións de observación adecuadas.
10:33
It's very easy, win the million dollars.
256
618000
2000
Doadísimo, gaña o millón de dólares.
10:35
Sylvia Browne is an exception in that
257
620000
2000
Sylvia Browne é unha excepción
10:37
she's the only professional psychic
258
622000
3000
porque é a única médium profesional
en todo o mundo
10:40
in the whole world
259
625000
2000
10:42
that has accepted our challenge.
260
627000
3000
que aceptou o noso reto.
10:45
She did this on the "Larry King Live" show on CNN
261
630000
3000
Fíxoo nun programa da CNN
10:48
six and a half years ago.
262
633000
3000
hai seis anos e medio.
10:51
And we haven't heard from her since. Strange.
263
636000
3000
E aínda non temos noticias dela.
Cousa rara.
10:54
She said that, first of all, that she didn't know how to contact me.
264
639000
3000
Primeiro dixo iso e logo
que non sabía como contactar comigo.
10:57
Duh.
265
642000
2000
Boh.
10:59
A professional psychic who speaks to dead people,
266
644000
2000
Unha médium profesional
que fala cos mortos
11:02
she can't reach me?
267
647000
2000
e non dá contactado comigo?
11:04
(Laughter)
268
649000
2000
Estou vivo, como podedes comprobar.
11:06
I'm alive, you may have noticed.
269
651000
2000
11:08
Well, pretty well anyway.
270
653000
2000
Ben, bastante ben igualmente.
11:11
She couldn't reach me. Now she says she doesn't want to reach me
271
656000
3000
Non podía contactar comigo,
pero agora di que non quere
11:14
because I'm a godless person.
272
659000
3000
porque son un impío.
11:17
All the more reason to take the million dollars,
273
662000
2000
Con máis razón quererías gañarme
o millón de dólares
11:19
wouldn't you think, Sylvia?
274
664000
2000
non cres, Sylvia?
11:21
Now these people need to be stopped, seriously now.
275
666000
3000
Hai que parar a esta xente,
agora en serio.
11:24
They need to be stopped because this is a cruel farce.
276
669000
2000
Hai que paralos porque é
unha farsa cruel.
11:26
We get people coming to the foundation all the time.
277
671000
3000
Chega xente á Fundación seguido.
11:29
They're ruined financially and emotionally
278
674000
3000
Arruinados emocional e economicamente
11:32
because they've given their money and their faith
279
677000
2000
porque puxeron todos os seus cartos
e fe nesa xente.
11:34
to these people.
280
679000
2000
11:36
Now, I popped some pills earlier.
281
681000
2000
Tomei unhas pastillas ao principio
11:38
I have to explain that to you.
282
683000
2000
e agora téñovolo que explicar.
11:40
Homeopathy, let's find out what that's all about.
283
685000
3000
A homeopatía, que vén sendo isto.
11:43
Hmm. You've heard of it.
284
688000
2000
Algo escoitastes, supoño.
11:45
It's an alternative form of healing, right?
285
690000
3000
É unha forma alternativa de curación, non?
11:48
Homeopathy actually consists -- and that's what this is.
286
693000
3000
A homeopatía consiste...
É isto.
11:51
This is Calms Forte,
287
696000
3000
Isto é Calms Forte.
11:54
32 caplets of sleeping pills! I forgot to tell you that.
288
699000
3000
32 pastillas para durmir!
Esquecérame de dicírvolo.
11:57
I just ingested
289
702000
2000
Acabo de inxerir
11:59
six and a half days worth of sleeping pills.
290
704000
3000
6 días e medio de pastillas para durmir.
12:02
(Laughter)
291
707000
2000
12:04
Six and a half days, that certainly is a fatal dose.
292
709000
2000
6 días e medio é unha dose letal,
sen dúbida.
12:06
It says right on the back here,
293
711000
2000
Aquí detrás pon:
"En caso de sobredose
12:08
"In case of overdose,
294
713000
2000
12:10
contact your poison control center immediately,"
295
715000
2000
chame inmediatamente ao
centro de toxicoloxía"
12:12
and it gives an 800 number.
296
717000
2000
e pon un número gratuíto.
12:14
Keep your seats -- it's going to be okay.
297
719000
2000
Tranquilos, non vos preocupedes.
12:16
I don't really need it
298
721000
2000
Non fai falla,
levo facendo este truco
12:18
because I've been doing this stunt
299
723000
2000
para o público en todo o mundo
12:20
for audiences all over the world
300
725000
3000
12:23
for the last eight or 10 years,
301
728000
2000
durante os últimos 8 ou 10 anos.
12:25
taking fatal doses of homeopathic sleeping pills.
302
730000
3000
Tomei moitas doses letais de
pastillas para durmir homeopáticas.
12:28
Why don't they affect me?
303
733000
2000
E por que non me afectan?
12:30
(Laughter)
304
735000
2000
12:32
(Applause)
305
737000
3000
12:35
The answer may surprise you.
306
740000
2000
A resposta igual vos sorprende.
12:37
What is homeopathy?
307
742000
2000
Que é a homeopatía?
Pois é tomar unha menciña
que funciona de verdade
12:39
It's taking a medicine that really works
308
744000
2000
12:41
and diluting it down
309
746000
2000
e diluíla
moito máis do límite de Avogadro.
12:43
well beyond Avogadro's limit.
310
748000
2000
12:45
Diluting it down to the point
311
750000
2000
Diluíla ata o punto no que
12:47
where there's none of it left. (Laughter)
312
752000
3000
xa non queda nada.
12:50
Now folks, this is not
313
755000
2000
Isto non é só unha metáfora,
é certo o que vos digo.
12:52
just a metaphor I'm going to give you now, it's true.
314
757000
3000
12:55
It's exactly equivalent to taking
315
760000
2000
Isto é exactamente igual ca coller
12:57
one 325 milligram aspirin tablet,
316
762000
4000
unha aspirina de 325 miligramos
13:01
throwing it into the middle of Lake Tahoe,
317
766000
3000
guindala no medio do lago Tahoe
13:04
and then stirring it up, obviously with a very big stick,
318
769000
3000
e despois remexela,
obviamente cun pau ben gordo
13:07
and waiting two years or so
319
772000
2000
e esperar uns dous anos
13:09
until the solution is homogeneous.
320
774000
3000
ata que a solución sexa homoxénea.
13:12
Then, when you get a headache,
321
777000
2000
Despois, cando che doia a cabeza
bebes un grolo desta auga e,
voilà! xa non che doe!
13:14
you take a sip of this water, and -- voila! -- it is gone.
322
779000
3000
13:17
(Laughter)
323
782000
2000
13:19
Now that is true. That is what homeopathy is all about.
324
784000
3000
Isto é o que vén sendo a homeopatía.
13:22
And another claim that they make -- you'll love this one --
325
787000
3000
E outra das cousas que din,
esta vaivos gustar moito
13:25
the more dilute the medicine is, they say,
326
790000
3000
é que canto máis dilúes unha menciña
13:28
the more powerful it is.
327
793000
2000
máis potente é.
13:30
Now wait a minute, we heard about a guy in Florida.
328
795000
3000
Esperade, oín falar dun tipo de Florida.
13:33
The poor man, he was on homeopathic medicine.
329
798000
2000
O pobre estaba a tomar
una menciña homeopática.
13:35
He died of an overdose.
330
800000
2000
Morreu de sobredose.
Esqueceuse de tomar a súa menciña.
13:37
He forgot to take his pill.
331
802000
2000
13:39
(Laughter)
332
804000
2000
13:41
Work on it. Work on it.
333
806000
2000
Pensádeo, pensádeo.
13:45
It's a ridiculous thing. It is absolutely ridiculous.
334
810000
3000
É ridículo. Totalmente ridículo.
13:48
I don't know what we're doing,
335
813000
2000
Non sei que facemos
13:50
believing in all this nonsense over all these years.
336
815000
3000
crendo nestas parvadas tanto tempo.
13:53
Now, let me tell you,
337
818000
2000
Deixádeme que vos diga
13:55
The James Randi Educational Foundation
338
820000
2000
que a Fundación Educativa James Randi
está ofrecendo un gran premio.
13:57
is waving this very big carrot,
339
822000
2000
13:59
but I must say, the fact that nobody
340
824000
3000
Tamén teño que dicir que
14:02
has taken us up on this offer
341
827000
2000
que ninguén acepte a oferta
14:04
doesn't mean that the powers don't exist.
342
829000
2000
non significa que
eses poderes non existan.
14:06
They might, some place out there.
343
831000
3000
Igual si, por algún lado.
14:09
Maybe these people are just independently wealthy.
344
834000
3000
Igual esas persoas
non precisan os cartos.
14:12
Well, with Sylvia Browne I would think so.
345
837000
2000
Por exemplo, con Sylvia Browne
eu pensaríao.
14:14
You know, 700 dollars for a 20 minute reading
346
839000
2000
700 dólares por
un contacto telefónico de 20 minutos
14:16
over the telephone --
347
841000
2000
Cobra máis que un avogado!
14:18
that's more than lawyers make!
348
843000
2000
14:21
I mean that's a fabulous amount of money.
349
846000
2000
É unha cantidade incrible de cartos.
14:23
These people don't need the million dollars perhaps,
350
848000
3000
Pode que esa xente non precise
un millón de dólares
14:26
but wouldn't you think they'd like to take it
351
851000
2000
pero non pensades que
lles gustaría gañarnos
14:28
just to make me look silly?
352
853000
2000
só por deixarme de parvo?
14:30
Just to get rid of this godless person out there
353
855000
3000
Por desfacerse deste impío
14:33
that Sylvia Browne talks about all the time?
354
858000
3000
do que Sylvia Browne fala seguido?
14:36
I think that something needs to be done about this.
355
861000
2000
Creo que hai que facer algo en serio.
14:38
We really would love to have suggestions from you folks
356
863000
3000
Gustaríame escoitar
algunha das vosas propostas
14:41
on how to contact federal, state
357
866000
3000
para contactar
coas autoridades federais, estatais
14:44
and local authorities
358
869000
2000
e locais
14:46
to get them to do something.
359
871000
2000
para que fagan algo ao respecto.
14:48
If you find out -- now I understand.
360
873000
3000
Se sabedes como...
Si, xa sei
14:51
We've seen people, even today, speaking to us
361
876000
2000
vemos xente,
aínda hoxe en día, que nos fala
14:53
about AIDS epidemics
362
878000
2000
da epidemia da SIDA,
14:55
and starving kids around the world
363
880000
2000
de nenos morrendo de fame
no mundo,
14:57
and impure water supplies that people have to suffer with.
364
882000
3000
de xente que ten que sufrir
a falla de auga potable.
15:00
Those are very important,
365
885000
2000
Esas cuestións son moi importantes,
15:02
critically important to us.
366
887000
2000
cruciais, incluso.
Temos que facer algo para resolvelas.
15:04
And we must do something about those problems.
367
889000
3000
15:07
But at the same time,
368
892000
2000
Pero ao mesmo tempo
como dixo Arthur C. Clarke:
15:09
as Arthur C. Clarke said,
369
894000
2000
A podremia da mente humana
15:11
The rotting of the human mind,
370
896000
2000
15:13
the business of believing in the paranormal and the occult
371
898000
2000
o negocio de crer
no paranormal e no oculto
15:15
and the supernatural --
372
900000
2000
e o sobrenatural...
15:17
all of this total nonsense,
373
902000
2000
En todas estas trapalladas,
15:19
this medieval thinking --
374
904000
2000
este pensamento medieval...
15:21
I think something should be done about that,
375
906000
2000
Hai que facer algo
15:23
and it all lies in education.
376
908000
2000
e a solución reside na educación.
15:25
Largely, it's the media
377
910000
2000
En gran parte, os medios de comunicación
15:27
who are to blame for this sort of thing.
378
912000
2000
teñen a culpa de todo isto.
15:29
They shamelessly promote
379
914000
2000
Fomentan descaradamente
15:31
all kinds of nonsense of this sort
380
916000
2000
todo tipo de trapalladas destas
15:33
because it pleases the sponsors.
381
918000
3000
porque aos patrocinadores gústanlle
15:37
It's the bottom line, the dollar line.
382
922000
2000
polo pan baila o can.
O carto.
15:39
That's what they're looking at.
383
924000
2000
Niso se fixan.
15:41
We really must do something about this.
384
926000
2000
Temos que facer algo de verdade.
15:43
I'm willing to take your suggestions,
385
928000
2000
Estou disposto a escoitar
as vosas propostas
15:45
and I'm willing to have you
386
930000
2000
e tamén quero que entredes na nosa web
15:47
tune in to our webpage.
387
932000
3000
15:50
It's www.randi.org.
388
935000
3000
É www.randi.org
15:53
Go in there and look at the archives,
389
938000
2000
Entrade e mirade os arquivos
15:55
and you will begin to understand much more
390
940000
2000
e comezaredes a entender moito máis
15:57
of what I've been talking about today.
391
942000
2000
sobre o que vos contei hoxe aquí.
15:59
You will see the records that we have.
392
944000
2000
Veredes todos os documentos que temos.
16:01
There's nothing like sitting in that library
393
946000
2000
Non hai nada como sentarte nesa biblioteca
16:03
and having a family appear there
394
948000
2000
e ver a historia dunha familia
16:05
and say that Mum gave away all the family fortune.
395
950000
3000
cuxa nai regalou
todos os aforros que tiñan.
16:08
She cashed in the CDs,
396
953000
2000
Regalou os CD,
16:10
she gave away the stocks and the certificates.
397
955000
3000
as accións, os certificados de valores.
16:13
That's really sad to hear,
398
958000
2000
É triste escoitalo
16:15
and it hasn't helped them one bit,
399
960000
3000
e non lles axudou nadiña.
16:18
hasn't solved any of their problems.
400
963000
2000
Non solucionou ningún dos seus problemas.
16:20
Yes, there could be a rotting of the American mind,
401
965000
2000
Pode que a mente estadounidense
podreza
16:22
and of the minds all the way around the earth,
402
967000
3000
e tamén a de todo o mundo
16:25
if we don't start to think sensibly about these things.
403
970000
3000
se non comezamos a ser sensatos
con estes temas.
16:29
Now, we've offered this carrot,
404
974000
2000
Ofrecemos este premio
16:31
as I say, we've dangled the carrot.
405
976000
2000
e como digo, poñémolo en bandexa.
16:33
We're waiting for the psychics to come forth and snap at it.
406
978000
2000
Estamos esperando
a que veñan médiums e nolo quiten.
16:35
Oh, we get lots of them,
407
980000
2000
Veñen unha morea deles
centos de persoas por ano.
16:37
hundreds of them every year come by.
408
982000
2000
16:39
These are dowsers and people
409
984000
2000
Falabaratos e outras persoas
que pensan que poden falar cos mortos
16:41
who think that they can talk to the dead as well,
410
986000
2000
16:43
but they're amateurs; they don't know how to evaluate
411
988000
2000
pero son principiantes;
non saben como avaliar
16:45
their own so-called powers.
412
990000
3000
os seus supostos poderes.
16:48
The professionals never come near us,
413
993000
2000
Os profesionais non adoitan vir onda nós
16:50
except in that case of Sylvia Browne
414
995000
2000
coa excepción de Sylvia Browne
16:52
that I told you about a moment ago.
415
997000
2000
da que vos falei hai un chisco.
Aceptou e logo botouse atrás.
16:55
She did accept and then backed away.

3000
16:58
Ladies and gentlemen,
417
1003000
3000
Donas e cabaleiros,
17:01
I'm James Randi,
418
1006000
3000
son James Randi
e estou agardando.
17:04
and I'm waiting.
419
1009000
