ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mohamed Ali - Human rights advocate
Human rights advocate Mohamed Ali fights terrorism with entrepreneurship.

Why you should listen

In urban hubs like Mogadishu, says Mohamed Ali, we're losing our brightest minds to terrorism and violence. Why not channel the energy of ambitious and eager young people toward innovation instead of destruction? Ali is doing his part to make this dream a reality. He is the Executive Director of the Iftiin Foundation, an organization that builds and supports young entrepreneurs to encourage a culture of change and innovation in Somalia and other post-conflict countries. Ali believes these untapped youths can become figures of hope for their communities and ultimately promote peace and stability in the region.

Ali is a founding member of End Famine, a campaign founded in 2011 aimed at promoting food security and eradicating famine worldwide, starting with the Horn of Africa. Ali has a law degree from Boston College Law School.

jawaabta waa "marna"
06:03
So Mohamed saw an opportunity.
138
351958
1948
sidaas darteed mohamed wuxuu arkey fursad,
06:05
He started a landscaping and design floral company.
139
353906
4447
Waxa uu bilaabay beerista iyo naqshadda shirkadda ubaxa.
06:10
He created a farm right outside of Mogadishu,
140
358353
3308
waxa uu beer ku abuurey meel ka baxsan magaalada Muqdisho,
06:13
and started growing tulips and lilies,
141
361661
2056
iyo wuxuu bilaabey beerista ubax iyo Fiiriya,
06:15
which he said could survive
142
363717
1706
taas oo uu sheegay in ay kori karaan
06:17
the harsh Mogadishu climate.
143
365423
2711
cimilada adag ee mogadisho.
06:20
And he began delivering flowers to weddings,
144
368134
3698
waxa uuna bilaabay inuu ubaxyadakeeno arosyada,
06:23
creating gardens at homes
145
371832
1933
isagoo abuuraya jardiigadooyin guryaha dhaxdooda
06:25
and businesses around the city,
146
373765
2604
iyo ganacsiyada magaalada hareeraheeda,
06:28
and he's now working on creating
147
376369
1737
isaga oo hada ku shaqeynaya abuurida
06:30
Mogadishu's first public park in 22 years.
148
378106
3625
darjiinka-dadweynahae ee mogadisho ugu horeysay muddo 22 sano ah.
06:33
There's no public park in Mogadishu.
149
381731
2099
malahan darjiimo-dadweyne mogadisho gudaheed.
06:35
He wants to create a space where families,
150
383830
2329
Waxa uu doonayaa in la abuuro goob halkaas ay qoysaska,
06:38
young people, can come together,
151
386159
1651
dadka dhalinyarada ah, ay wada imaan karaan,
06:39
and, as he says, smell the proverbial roses.
152
387810
4638
iyo, sida, uu leeyahay, uri dhadhanka ubaxa, maahmaah
06:44
And he doesn't grow roses because
153
392448
1956
isaga ma abuuro ubaxyada sababtoo ah
06:46
they use too much water, by the way.
154
394404
4124
waxey isticmaalaan biyo badan ,sida caadiga ah.
06:50
So the first step is to inspire young people,
155
398528
4312
sidaas darteed talaabada ugu horeysa waa in la dhiiri gelyaa dadka dhalinyarada.
06:54
and in that room, Mohamed's presence
156
402840
2192
iyo qolkaas gudihiisa, mohamed joogitaankiisa
06:57
had a really profound impact
on the youth in that room.
157
405032
3476
waxay saameyn zaaid ah ku yeelatay dadka dhalinyarada ah ee qolka ku jirey.
07:00
They had never really thought
about starting up a business.
158
408508
2587
waligood kuma aysan fikirin in ay bilaabaan ganacsiyo.
07:03
They've thought about working for an NGO,
159
411095
1847
waxey ku fikiraan u shaqeynta NGO'yada
07:04
working for the government,
160
412942
1687
u shaqeynta dowlada,
07:06
but his story, his innovation,
161
414629
4307
laakiin sheekadiisa, hal abuurkiisa,
07:10
really had a strong impact on them.
162
418936
1953
waxey saameyn xoogan ku laheed ayaga.
07:12
He forced them to look at their city
163
420889
2119
Wuxuu iyaga ku qasbay in ay eegaan oo ay magaaladooda
07:15
as a place of opportunity.
164
423008
1754
sida ay meel fursadeed u tahay
07:16
He empowered them to believe
that they could be entrepreneurs,
165
424762
3748
waxa uu ku dhiira gilyey in ay aaminsanadan in ay noqon karaan ganacsato,
07:20
that they could be change makers.
166
428510
2420
in ay noqon karaan dad isbadel sameyn kara.
07:22
By the end of the day, they were coming up
167
430930
1560
dhamaadka maalinta, waxey la imaanayaan
07:24
with innovative solutions
168
432490
1551
xalal cusub
07:26
to some of the biggest challenges facing their city.
169
434041
3332
oo ku sabsan qaar ka mid ah dhibaatoyinka ugu waaweyn ee wajaheyso magaladoda.
07:29
They came up with entrepreneurial solutions
170
437373
2603
waxey la imaanayaan xuluul sida mashaariiq dhaxgal ah
07:31
to local problems.
171
439976
2922
sida dhibaatooyinka maxaliga ah.
07:34
So inspiring young people
172
442898
2231
sidaas dhiiragelinta dadka dhalinyarada ah
07:37
and creating a culture of entrepreneurship
173
445129
2414
iyo abuurista dhaqan gabacsi abuur leh
07:39
is a really great step,
174
447543
1867
run ahaantii waa talaabo weyn,
07:41
but young people need capital
175
449410
1689
laakiin dadka dhallinyarada ah u baahan yihiin raasumaal
07:43
to make their ideas a reality.
176
451099
1789
si fikradahooda ugu dhabeeyaan.
07:44
They need expertise and mentorship
177
452888
2324
Waxay u baahan yihiin dad khubaro ah iyo dad ay ku deydan
07:47
to guide them in developing
and launching their businesses.
178
455212
3400
si ay iga hagaan horumarinta
iyo bilaabida ganacsiyadoda.
07:50
Connect young people with the resources they need,
179
458612
2487
iyo kuxirida dadka dhalinyarada adeegyada ay u baahan yihiin,
07:53
provide them the support they need
to go from ideation to creation,
180
461099
3465
iyo in lasiiyo tagerada ay u baahanyihiin si ay uga soo gudbaan "fikradaha" ilaa ay ka "xaqiijiyaan",
07:56
and you will create catalysts for urban growth.
181
464564
4100
waxaad abuureysaa xoojinta koritaanka magaaladaada.
08:00
For me, entrepreneurship is more than just
182
468664
2924
Aniga ahaan, lahaanshaha ganacsi waa ka badan oo kaliya
08:03
starting up a business.
183
471588
1556
bilaabida ganacsi.
08:05
It's about creating a social impact.
184
473144
2381
Waa wax ku saabsan tahay abuurista "saamayn bulshadeed".
08:07
Mohamed is not simply selling flowers.
185
475525
2135
mohamed keliya ma iibinaayo ubaxyo.
08:09
I believe he is selling hope.
186
477660
2487
waxaan aaminsanahay in uu iibanaayo rajo.
08:12
His Peace Park, and that's what he calls it,
187
480147
2589
jardiinkiisa nabaneed, sida uu iasaga ugu yeerey,
08:14
when it's created, will actually transform
188
482736
2172
markii la abuuro, dhab ahaantii waxey bedeli doontaa
08:16
the way people see their city.
189
484908
2072
qaabka dadka ay u arkaan magaaladooda.
08:18
Aden hired street kids to help rent out
190
486980
2153
Aden wuxuu kireystey caruurta suuqa si ay ugu caawiyaan kireynta
08:21
and maintain those bikes for him.
191
489133
1862
si ay u ilaaliyaan mootooyinkiisa.
08:22
He gave them the opportunity to escape
192
490995
2058
wuxuu siiyey fursad ay ayagana uga baxaan
08:25
the paralysis of waithood.
193
493053
2936
curyaanimada fadhiga.
08:27
These young entrepreneurs are having
194
495989
2030
kuwaasi dhalinyarada ganacsi abuurka waxey
08:30
a tremendous impact in their cities.
195
498019
3534
saameyn weyn ku leeyihiin magaalooyinkooda.
08:33
So my suggestion is,
196
501553
2516
sidaas darteed rayo bixinteeda.
08:36
turn youth into entrepreneurs,
197
504069
2516
in dhalinyarada loo leexiyo ganacsi abuurka,
08:38
incubate and nurture their inherent innovation,
198
506585
3223
ku hareereeya iyo kobciya nidaamkooda wax soo saarka ah,
08:41
and you will have more stories
of flowers and Peace Parks
199
509808
3839
waxadna heli doontaa sheekooyin ka badan ubaxyo iyo darjiimo-nabadeed
08:45
than of car bombs and waithood.
200
513647
3093
aan aheyn garax-gaari iyo fadhi.
08:48
Thank you.
