ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Péter Fankhauser - Roboticist
Péter Fankhauser is the leader of a team of students working on Rezero, a robot that balances on a single sphere.

Why you should listen

Mechanical engineer Péter Fankhauser is leading a large team of student engineers and designers at the Swiss federal institute of technology in Zurich who are building a robot that balances and drives on a single sphere. Other roboticists have explored this idea, of stabilizing a robot on a ball, but what Fankhauser and his fellow students hoped to do was make it dance. “Adding dynamics was definitely one of our goals,” he says.

Working with researchers including Michael Neunert and Thomas Kammermann,  the team has produced Rezero, a ballbot prototype that can slalom around, resist toppling up to 17 degrees off vertical, and inspire myriad uses. Designed for high acceleration, it moves in an organic and even elegant way.  Fankhauser has started graduate studies in mechanical engineering this fall with a focus on robotics, control and construction.

He says of Rezero: "He wants to demonstrate what he can do, as if he was saying, ‘Backwards, forwards. I can do it all. Look at me!'"

Our robot belongs to a family of robots
5
12000
2000
Roboti ynë i përket familjes së roboteve
00:29
called Ballbots.
6
14000
2000
të quajtur Roboti Top.
00:31
Instead of wheels, a Ballbot is balancing
7
16000
2000
00:33
and moving on one single ball.
8
18000
2000
duke lëvizur në një top të vetem.
00:35
The main characteristics of such a system is
9
20000
2000
Karakteristika kryesore e këtij sistemi është
00:37
that there's one sole contact point to the ground.
10
22000
3000
qe ekziston vetem një kontakt i kryesor me tokën.
00:40
This means that the robot
11
25000
2000
Kjo do të thotë se roboti
00:42
is inherently unstable.
12
27000
2000
është jo - stabel.
00:44
It's like when I am trying to stand
13
29000
2000
00:46
on one foot.
14
31000
1000
me një këmb.
00:47
You might ask yourself, what's the usefulness
15
32000
2000
00:49
of a robot that's unstable?
16
34000
2000
një robot që është jo stabel?
00:51
Now we'll explain that in a second.
17
36000
2000
Tani do ja u spjegoj kete vetem në një sekod.
00:53
Let me first explain how Rezero
18
38000
2000
00:55
actually keeps his balance.
19
40000
2000
00:57
Rezero keeps his balance by constantly
20
42000
2000
Rezero e mban balancin e tij vazhdimisht
00:59
measuring his pitch angle with a sensor.
21
44000
3000
01:02
He then counteracts and avoids toppling over
22
47000
3000
01:05
by turning the motors appropriately.
23
50000
2000
duke i lëvizur motorret në vend.
01:07
This happens 160 times per second,
24
52000
2000
Kjo ndodhë 160 herë në sekond,
01:09
and if anything fails in this process,
25
54000
2000
dhe nëse ndodhë ndonjë dështim gjatë këtij procesi,
01:11
Rezero would immediately fall to the ground.
26
56000
3000
Rezero do të rrëzohej mënjëher në tokë.
01:14
Now to move and to balance,
27
59000
2000
Për të lëvizur dhe balancuar,
01:16
Rezero needs to turn the ball.
28
61000
2000
Rezero-os i nevojitet qe të lëviz topin.
01:18
The ball is driven by three special wheels
29
63000
2000
Topi lëvizë duke përdorur tri rrota speciale
01:20
that allow Rezero to move into any direction
30
65000
3000
01:23
and also move around his own axis
31
68000
2000
01:25
at the same time.
32
70000
4000
në të njejtën kohë.
01:29
Due to his instability, Rezero is always
33
74000
2000
Për shkak të këtij jo-stabiliteti, Rezero është
01:31
in motion. Now here's the trick.
34
76000
2000
gjithmone në lëvizje.Ja si është dredhia.
01:33
It's indeed exactly this instability that allows
35
78000
3000
01:36
a robot to move very [dynamically].
36
81000
2000
robotin të lëviz shumë [në mënyr dinamike].
01:38
Let's play a little.
37
83000
2000
Le të luajmë pakez.
01:40
You may have wondered what happens
38
85000
2000
Ju mundë të habiteni se cfare ndodhë
01:42
if I give the robot a little push.
39
87000
3000
nëse robotin e shtymë vetem pak.
01:47
In this mode, he's trying to maintain
40
92000
2000
Në këtë mënyrë, ai provon të mbaj
01:49
his position.
41
94000
3000
pozicionin e tij.
01:52
For the next demo, I'd like you to introduce
42
97000
3000
Për shfaqjen tjeter, do të dëshiroja t'ju prezantoj
01:55
to my colleagues Michael, on the computer,
43
100000
3000
me kologun tim Michael, në kompjuter,
01:58
and Thomas who's helping me onstage.
44
103000
3000
02:02
In the next mode, Rezero is passive,
45
107000
2000
Në mënyren tjeter, Rezero është pasivë,
02:04
and we can move him around.
46
109000
3000
dhe ne mundë ta lëvizim atë rreth nesh.
02:08
With almost no force I can control
47
113000
2000
02:10
his position and his velocity.
48
115000
3000
pozicionin dhe shpejtësin e tij.
02:16
I can also make him spin.
49
121000
3000
Unë gjithashtu mund ta bëj të rrotulliset.
02:30
In the next mode, we can get Rezero
50
135000
2000
Në mënyren tjeter, ne mund ta bëjm Rezeron
02:32
to follow a person.
51
137000
3000
te ndjeke një përson.
02:35
He's now keeping a constant distance to Thomas.
52
140000
3000
Ai tani po e mban distancen konstante me Tomas-in.
02:42
This works with a laser sensor
53
147000
2000
Kjo mënyre punon me një sensor lazeri
02:44
that's mounted on top of Rezero.
54
149000
2000
02:50
With the same method, we can also
55
155000
2000
Me të njejtën metodë, ne gjithashtu mundë
02:52
get him to circle a person.
56
157000
3000
ta rrotullojmë rreth një personi.
02:57
We call this the orbiting mode.
57
162000
4000
Ne e quajmë këtë mënyra orbitrale.
03:10
All right, thank you, Thomas.
58
175000
2000
Në rregull. faleminderit Thomas.
03:12
(Applause)
59
177000

(Duartrokitje)
03:16
Now, what's the use of this technology?
60
181000
3000
Tani, cili eshte përdorimi i kesaj teknologjie?
03:22
For now, it's an experiment, but let me
61
187000
2000
03:24
show you some possible future applications.
62
189000
3000
03:28
Rezero could be used in exhibitions or parks.

03:30
With a screen it could inform people or show
