ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Leah Buechley - Designer
Leah Buechley is an MIT electronics designer who mixes high and low tech to create smart and playful results.

Why you should listen

Electronics aren't just for experts and engineers. Kids and amateurs should be able to play, too, which is why Leah Buechley designs little paper-based electronics for "sketching" and interactive electronic fashion for tinkering. Buechley designs and creates electronic textiles, or e-textiles, like this jacket that can signal which way you're turning on your bike. She's an assistant professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she also directs the High-Low Tech research group.

I'm going to talk to you about sketching素描 electronics电子产品.

00:21
I'm, among其中 several一些 other things, an electrical电动 engineer工程师,
1
5193
5368
00:26
and that means手段 that I spend a good amount of time
2
10561
3697
00:30
designing设计 and building建造 new pieces of technology技术,
3
14258
4374
00:34
and more specifically特别 designing设计 and building建造 electronics电子产品.
4
18632
4540
00:39
And what I've found发现 is that the process处理 of designing设计
5
23172
4358
00:43
and building建造 electronics电子产品 is problematic问题 in all sorts排序 of ways方法.
6
27530
5594
00:49
So it's a really slow process处理, it's really expensive昂贵,
7
33124
4841
00:53
and the outcome结果 of that process处理,
8
37965
2440
00:58
are limited有限 in all sorts排序 of kind of interesting有趣 ways方法.
10
42821
3029
01:01
So they're really small, generally通常, they're square广场
11
45850
3640
01:05
and flat平面 and hard, and frankly坦率地说, most of them
12
49490
4365
01:09
just aren't very attractive有吸引力, and so my team球队 and I
13
53855
4313
01:14
have been thinking思维 of ways方法 to really change更改 and mix混合 up
14
58168
3988
01:18
the process处理 and the outcome结果 of designing设计 electronics电子产品.
15
62156
4661
01:22
And so what if you could design设计 and build建立 electronics电子产品
16
66817
4088
01:26
like this? So what if you could do it extremely非常 quickly很快,
17
70905
4040
01:30
extremely非常 inexpensively廉价, and maybe more interestingly有趣,
18
74945
5665
01:36
really fluidly流体 and expressively意味深长地 and even improvisationally即兴?
19
80610
5264
01:41
Wouldn't岂不 that be so cool, and that wouldn't不会 that open打开 up
20
85874
3322
01:45
all sorts排序 of new possibilities可能性?
21
89196
2448
01:47
I'm going to share分享 with you two projects项目 that are

03:39
Pretty漂亮 cool, huh? We think so.
35
203511

03:42
So now that we developed发达 these tools工具
36
206508
3784
03:46
and found发现 these materials物料 that let us do these things,
37
210292
3738
03:49
we started开始 to realize实现 that, essentially实质上, anything
38
214030
4168
03:54
that we can do with paper, anything that we can do

03:56
with a piece of paper and a pen钢笔

03:58
we can now do with electronics电子产品.
41
222997
2417
04:01
So the next下一个 project项目 that I want to show显示 you is kind of a

2368
04:03
deeper更深 exploration勘探 of that possibility可能性.
43
227782
3560
04:07
And I'll kind of let it speak说话 for itself本身.
44
231342

05:46
So the next下一个 step for us in this process处理
47
331020
4800
05:51
is now to find a way to let all of you
48
335820
3728
05:55
build建立 things like this,
49
339548
2896
05:58
and so the way that we're approaching接近 that is by
50
342444
3080
06:01
teaching教学 workshops研讨会 to people where we explain说明
51
345524
2607
06:04
how they can use these kinds of tools工具, and then also
52
348131
3113
06:07
working加工 to get the tools工具 and the materials物料 and techniques技术
53
351244
3742
06:10
out into the real真实 world世界 in a variety品种 of ways方法.
54
354986
3750
06:14
And so sometime某时 soon不久, you'll你会 be able能够 to play and build建立
55
358736
3584
06:18
and sketch草图 with electronics电子产品 in this fundamentally从根本上 new way.
56
362320
3794
06:22
So thank you very much. (Applause
