ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jae Rhim Lee - Artist
Artist and TED Fellow Jae Rhim Lee re-imagines the relationships between the body and the world.

Why you should listen

Jae Rhim Lee is a visual artist and mushroom lover. In her early work, as a grad student at MIT, she built systems that reworked basic human processes: sleeping (check out her it-just-might-work vertical bed from 2004), urinating and eating (and the relationship between the two). Now she's working on a compelling new plan for the final human process: decomposition.

Her Infinity Burial Project explores the choices we face after death, and how our choices reflect our denial or acceptance of death’s physical implications. She's been developing a new strain of fungus, the Infinity Mushroom, that feeds on and remediates the industrial toxins we store in our bodies and convert our unused bodies efficiently into nutrients. Her Infinity Burial System converts corpses into clean compost. And if this vision of life after death appeals to you, explore the resources at Lee's company, Coeio.

2000
00:17
why I'm wearing穿著 these ninja忍者 pajamas睡衣.
1
2000
2000
00:19
And to do that, I'd like to talk first
2
4000
2000
00:21
about environmental環境的 toxins毒素 in our bodies身體.
3
6000
3000
00:24
So some of you may可能 know
4

00:26
about the chemical化學 Bisphenol雙酚 A, BPABPA.
5
11000
2000
00:28
It's a material材料 hardener固化劑 and synthetic合成的 estrogen雌激素
6
13000
3000
00:31
that's found發現 in the lining of canned聽裝 foods食品

00:33
and some plastics塑料.
8

00:35
So BPABPA mimics模仿 the body's身體的 own擁有 hormones激素
9
20000
3000
00:38
and causes原因 neurological神經 and reproductive生殖 problems問題.
10
23000
3000
00:41
And it's everywhere到處.
11
26000
2000
00:43
A recent最近 study研究 found發現 BPABPA

00:45
in 93 percent百分 of people six and older舊的.
13

3000
00:49
But it's just one chemical化學.
14

2000
00:51
The Center中央 for Disease疾病 Control控制 in the U.S.
15
36000
3000
00:54
says we have 219 toxic有毒的 pollutants污染物 in our bodies身體,
16
39000
4000
00:58
and this includes包括 preservatives防腐劑, pesticides農藥
17
43000
3000
01:01
and heavy metals金屬 like lead and mercury.
18
46000
3000
01:04
To me, this says three things.
19
49000
2000
01:06
First, don't become成為 a cannibal食人族.
20
51000
4000
01:10
Second第二, we are both responsible主管 for and the victims受害者 of
21
55000
3000
01:13
our own擁有 pollution污染.
22
58000
2000
01:15
And third第三,
23
60000
2000
第三
01:17
our bodies身體 are filters過濾器 and storehouses倉庫
24
62000
2000
01:22
So what happens發生 to all these toxins毒素 when we die?
26
67000
3000
01:25
The short answer回答 is:
27
70000
2000
01:27
They return返回 to the environment環境 in one way or another另一個,
28
72000
2000
01:29
continuing繼續 the cycle週期 of toxicity毒性.
29
74000
2000
01:31
But our current當前 funeral葬禮 practices做法
30
76000
2000
01:33
make the situation情況 much worse更差.
31
78000
2000
01:35
If you're cremated火化,
32
80000
2000
01:37
all those toxins毒素 I mentioned提到 are released發布 into the atmosphere大氣層.
33
82000
3000
01:40
And this includes包括 5,000 pounds英鎊 of mercury
34
85000
3000
01:43
from our dental牙齒 fillings餡料 alone單獨 every一切 year.
35
88000
3000
01:46
And in a traditional傳統 American美國 funeral葬禮,
36
91000
3000
01:49
a dead body身體 is covered覆蓋 with fillers填料 and cosmetics化妝品
37
94000
3000
01:52
to make it look alive.
38
97000
2000
01:54
It's then pumped with toxic有毒的 formaldehyde甲醛
39
99000
3000
01:57
to slow decomposition分解 --
40
102000
2000
01:59
a practice實踐 which哪一個 causes原因 respiratory呼吸 problems問題 and cancer癌症
41
104000
3000
02:02
in funeral葬禮 personnel人員.
42
107000
3000
02:05
So by trying to preserve保留 our dead bodies身體,
43
110000
3000
02:08
we deny拒絕 death死亡, poison the living活的
44
113000
3000
02:11

02:18
but they don't address地址 the existing現有 toxins毒素 in our bodies身體.
48

02:44
to create創建 the Infinity無窮 Mushroom蘑菇 --
60
149000
2000

02:55
But I learned學到了 it's nearly幾乎 impossible不可能
65
160000
2000
02:57
to create創建 a new hybrid混合動力 mushroom蘑菇.
66
162000
2000
02:59
I also learned學到了
67
164000
2000
03:01
that some of our tastiest美味 mushrooms蘑菇
68
166000
2000
03:03
can clean清潔 environmental環境的 toxins毒素 in soil.
69
168000
2000
03:05
So I thought maybe I could train培養 an army軍隊
70
170000
3000

03:13
So today今天, I'm collecting蒐集 what I shed or slough泥沼 off --
73

75
184000
3000
03:22
As the mushrooms蘑菇 grow增長,

03:33
So when I die,

2000
03:35
the Infinity無窮 Mushrooms蘑菇 will recognize認識 my body身體
82
200000
2000

03:39
All right, so for some of you,
84
204000
2000
03:41
this may可能 be really, really out there.
85
206000
