ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Débora Mesa Molina - Architect
Débora Mesa Molina makes space for experimentation in a highly regulated profession.

Why you should listen

Débora Mesa Molina designs and builds architectures that use overlooked materials and discover the beauty of the mundane. She is the principal architect of Ensamble Studio, a cross-functional team based in Madrid and Boston that she leads with her partner Antón García-Abril. Balancing imagination with reality, art and science, their work innovates typologies, technologies and methodologies to address issues as diverse as the construction of the landscape to the prefabrication of the house. From their early works -- such as SGAE Headquarters, Hemeroscopium House or The Truffle in Spain -- to their most recent works -- including the Cyclopean House and Structures of Landscape in the US -- every project navigates the uncertain aim of advancing their field. Through their startup WoHo, they are invested in increasing the quality of architecture while making it more affordable by integrating offsite technologies.

Mesa Molina is committed to sharing ideas and cultivating synergies between professional and academic worlds through teaching, lecturing and researching. Since 2018, she has served as Ventulett Chair in Architectural Design at Georgia Tech, and previously served as research scientist at MIT where she cofounded the POPlab in 2012. Above all, she is a doer, committed to making poetic ideas happen.

38
109800
2120
02:04
But we wanted them.
39
112680
1520
02:06
We were inspired
40
114240
1760
02:08
And it was a win-win雙贏 situation情況
41
116040
1600
02:09
where we could get this residual剩餘的
material材料 of great quality質量,
42
117680
4800
02:14

43
122520
1240
02:15
at a very low cost成本.
44
123800
1400
02:17
Now, we had to convince說服 our clients客戶
that this was a good idea理念;
45
125920
4040
讓他們相信這是個好點子;
02:22
but foremost最重要的是, we had to come up
with a design設計 process處理
46
130000
3640
02:25
to reuse重用 these randomly隨機 shaped成形 rocks岩石,
47
133680
2360
02:28
and we had not doneDONE this before.
48
136080
1680
02:30
Today今天 everything would be much easier更輕鬆
49
138600
2000
02:32
because we would go to the quarry採石場
50
140640
1920
02:34
with our smartphones智能手機
equipped裝備 with 3-D-D scanners掃描儀
51
142600
3440
02:38
and we would document文件 each rock,
52
146080
2320
02:40
turn that into a digital數字 model模型 --
53
148440
2200
02:44
But more than a decade ago,
55
152920
1640
02:46
we had to embrace擁抱 uncertainty不確定
56
154600
2280
02:48
and put on our boots靴子, roll up our sleeves袖子
57
156920
3120
02:52
and move移動 to the quarry採石場
for a hands-on動手 experience經驗.
58
160080
2760
02:56
And we also had to become成為 the contractors承包商
59
164080
2560
02:58
because we failed失敗 at finding發現 somebody
willing願意 to share分享 the risk風險 with us.
60
166680
4880
03:05
Now, luckily, we convinced相信 the quarry採石場 team球隊
to help us build建立 a few少數 prototypes原型
61
173880
5160
03:11
to resolve解決 some of the technical技術 details細節.
62
179080
2600
03:13
And we agreed約定 on a few少數 mock-ups實體模型,
63
181720
2840
03:16
but we got excited興奮,

03:36

84
236000

04:12
This building建造 gave us
quite相當 a few少數 headaches頭痛,
85
240880
3440
04:16
and so it could have well been

86
244360
4120
04:20
but instead代替 it started開始 to inform通知

87
248520
4280
04:24
where every一切 project項目

04:32
So what you see here are four homes

04:39
Four manifestos宣言 where

04:45
And we are trying to discover

04:58
or steel and foam泡沫 in the bottom底部 row.
98
286240
3000
05:01
Take, for instance,
these precast預製 concrete具體 beams.
99
289280
2160
05:03
You have probably大概 seen看到 them
100
291480
1760
05:08
we found發現 them on one of our visits訪問
to a precast預製 concrete具體 factory.
102
296920
3520
05:13
And they might威力 not seem似乎
especially特別 homey家常 or beautiful美麗,
103
301960
3960
05:17
but we decided決定 to use them
to build建立 our first house.
104
305960
4080
05:22
And this was an incredible難以置信 moment時刻
105
310080
1960
05:24
because we got to be architects建築師 as always,
106
312080
3400
05:28
and, for the first time,
we could be our own擁有 clients客戶.
108
316840
3320
05:33
So, here we are trying to figure數字 out
how we can take these huge巨大 catalogue目錄 beams
109
321560
5400
05:39
of about 20 tons each
110
327000
2200
05:41
and stack them progressively逐步
around a courtyard庭院 space空間 ...
111
329240
5080
05:46
the heart of the house.
112
334360
1920
05:49
And due應有 to the dimensions尺寸
and their material材料 quality質量,
113
337400
3720
05:53
these big parts部分 are the structure結構體
that carry攜帶 the loads負載 to the ground地面,
114
341160
4360
05:57
but they are much more than that.
115
345560
2000
05:59
They are the swimming游泳的 pool;
116
347600
1920
06:01
they are the walls牆壁 that divide劃分
interior室內 from exterior外觀;
117
349560
3880
06:05
they are the windows視窗 that frame the views意見;
118
353480
2680
06:08
they are the finishes飾面;
119
356200
1400
裝飾面層;
06:09
they are the very spirit精神 of this house.
120
357640
2160
06:12
A house that is for us a laboratory
121
360640
2440
06:15
where we are testing測試 how we can use
06:21
And we are observing觀察
that the results結果 are intriguing奇妙.
123
369000
3960
06:25
And we are learning學習 by doing
124
373000
1360
06:26
that prefabrication預製
can be much more than stacking堆疊 boxes盒子
125
374400
4040
06:30
or that heavy parts部分
can be airy輕快的 and transparent透明.
126
378480
3360
06:35
And on top最佳 of designing設計

127

06:38
we get invaluable無價 feedback反饋,
