of course, but he's right:
ali u pravu je,
fascinating about science.
u vezi sa naukom.
the existence of dinosuars.

the composition of nebulae.
o sastavu nebula.
of blood flowing through the brain,

nešto o osnovnim mehanizmima
of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT,
na Masačusetskom tehnološkom institutu,
trying to understand the mystery
pokušavajući da razumem misteriju
from so little so quickly.
iz tako malo tako brzo.
the fascinating thing about science
da je fascinantna stvar u vezi sa naukom
thing about children,
u vezi sa decom,
spin on Mark Twain,
to draw rich, abstract inferences
bujne, apstraktne zaključke
from sparse, noisy data.
iz oskudnih, izmešanih podataka.
just two examples today.
of causal reasoning.

to the broader population.
na širu populaciju.

slučajno uzorkovani ili ne,
from small samples of data all the time.
na osnovu malih uzoraka podataka.
and learn that they float,
i nauče da one plutaju,
about ducks and balls
u vezi sa patkama i loptama
to rubber ducks and balls
babies have to make about ducks and balls
o patkama i loptama
and cabbages and kings.
vosku za pečaćenje, kupusu i kraljevima.
the tiny bit of evidence they see
da li delić dokaza koji one vide
of a larger population?
of an experiment,
u eksperimentu,
just two movies,
in innumerable ways.
se razlikuju međusobno na bezbroj načina.
here stand in for groups of babies,
ovde zastupaju grupe beba,
in babies' behavior across conditions.
u ponašanju beba kroz različite uslove.
a baby doing maybe
kako beba radi
expect a baby to do,
da će beba uraditi,
more magical than they already are.
čarobnijim nego što već jesu.
these two conditions,
that differs between these two movies
the babies are going to observe.
koji će bebe primetiti.
a box of blue and yellow balls,
kutiju plavih i žutih lopti,
now colleague at Stanford, Hyowon Gweon,
sada koleginica na Stenfordu, Jouon Gvon,
in a row out of this box,
zaredom iz ove kutije,
she's going to squeeze them,
that's like a TED Talk.
easy to pull three blue balls in a row
izvući tri plave loptice zaredom
from this population.
iz ove populacije.
and pull out things that squeak,
i izvaditi stvari koje pište,
those yellow balls to squeak as well.
da žute lopte takođe pište.
have funny sticks on the end,
imaju zabavne štapiće na kraju,
with them if they wanted to.
da rade druge stvari sa njima ako hoće.

You can go ahead and play.
Možeš da se igraš.
will generalize properties
generalizovati osobine
can learn from imitating us,
mogu da uče imitirajući nas,
for a very long time.
exactly the same thing,
kada pokažemo bebama isto to,
because we have a secret compartment
jer imamo tajnu pregradu
is the apparent population
menjamo samo vidljivu populaciju
three blue balls
tri plave loptice
of mostly yellow balls,
sa pretežno žutim lopticama,
three blue balls in a row
tri loptice zaredom
randomly sampled evidence.
verovatan slučajno uzorkovani dokaz.
was deliberately sampling the blue balls.
namerno uzorkovala plave loptice.
about the blue balls.
nešto posebno u vezi sa plavim lopticama.
(Ball squeaks)

two 15-month-old babies
dve bebe stare 15 meseci
of the sample they observed.
koji su zapazile.
eksperimentalne rezultate.
the percentage of babies
ćete videti procenat beba
i kao što ćete videti,
more likely to generalize the evidence
da će bebe generalizovati dokaz
of the population
is clearly cherry-picked.
out of the mostly yellow box.
samo jednu plavu loptu
in a row at random out of a yellow box,
tri plave lopte zaredom iz žute kutije,
samo jednu plavu loptu.
just one blue ball.
a box at random
maybe everything in the box squeaks.
možda sve u kutiji pišti.
much less evidence for squeaking,
mnogo manje dokaza za pištanje,
the condition you just saw,
nego u situaciji koju ste upravo videli,
would squeeze more,
in this respect, like scientists,
u ovom pogledu, kao i naučnicima,
is randomly sampled or not,
nasumično uzorkovan ili ne,
expectations about the world:
očekivanja o svetu:
još jedan primer,
of causal reasoning.
of confounded evidence
to you, but like most problems,
ali, kao i većina problema,
tek kada stvari krenu naopako.
this toy go, and he can't.
ali ne može.
wrong with the toy.
just a tiny bit of statistical data
samo delić statističkih podataka
kako bi donosile različite odluke
can use that to make different decisions
the toy go and succeed.
i uspeti u tome.
and fail both times,
i oba puta neću uspeti,
to try again and succeed,
to my graduate students
odnos koji imam sa mojim studentima
it provides a little bit of evidence
jeste to da se pruža malo dokaza
it's with the person.
već sa osobom.
he's going to have a choice.
imaće izbor.
and change the person,
preda igračku i promeni osobu,
another toy at the end of that cloth,
će biti još jedna igračka,
and change the toy.
i promeni igračku.
(Music)
One, two, three, go!
Jedan, dva, tri, sad!
da ja pokušam ponovo, okej?
(Music)
to put this one over here,
babies love their mommies.
bebe vole svoje mame.
to their mommies
is what happens when we change
je šta se dešava kada promenimo
work and fail in exactly the same order,
potpuno istim redosledom,
the distribution of evidence.
once and fail once, and so am I.
i neće uspeti jednom, a isto tako ću i ja.
who tries this toy, the toy is broken.
igračku, igračka je pokvarena.
so she can change the person,
tako da može da promeni osobu,
at the end of the cloth.
(Music)
One, two, three, go!
Jedan, dva, tri, sad!
(Music)
to put this one over here,
rezultate eksperimenta.
the experimental results.
you'll see the distribution
of the choices children make
koji deca donose
of statistical data
malo statističkih podataka
fundamentally different strategies
fundamentalno različite strategije
two laboratory experiments
dva laboratorijska eksperimenta
that make similar points,
koji imaju sličnu poentu,

I told you a very different story.

about how starting as very small children

of a better future,
I do actually have a question for you.
Ja zapravo imam jedno pitanje za tebe.
an experiment like that? (Laughter)
takav eksperiment? (Smeh)
that that can truly be happening,
da se to stvarno dešava,
similar experiments; it checks out.
slične eksperimente; provereno je.
in our experiments,
u našim eksperimentima,
look like in real life, right?
u stvarnom životu.
it's talking to you,
things like balls and ducks,
nisu samo one poput lopte i patke,
which refer to disappearance,
što se odnosi na nestajanje,
to unintentional actions.
na nenamerne postupke.
than anything I showed you.
od svega što sam vam pokazala.
about almost anything.
može da priča sa vama o gotovo svemu.
the other key point you're making is,
druga tvoja ključna poenta je,
where there's all this talk
and the whole theories behind that
story is how extraordinary,
kako je izvanredan,
that is underappreciated.
koji se potcenjuje.
u psihologiji

Prepoznajete ih u mraku.
You know them in the dark.
are thinking. You can talk to them.
Možete da razgovarate sa njima.
You know about numbers.
Razumete brojeve.
You know about moral reasoning.
Razumete moralno rasuđivanje.
so we don't see it,
a to je neverovatno dostignuće
and it's a remarkable
accomplishment.
in the audience who have
ljudi u publici koji imaju
technological power
da nikada za vreme našeg života
that never in our lifetimes
a three-year-old child can do,
ono što može trogodišnje dete,
da u bilo kom scenariju,
from our toddlers.
mnogo toga da nauče od naših beba.
machine learning folks up here.
koji se bave mašinama koje uče.
against babies or chimpanzees
protiv beba ili šimpanzi
a difference in quantity,
samo razlika u količini,
neverovatno sofisticirane stvari,
sophisticated things,
something quite different,
nešto sasvim drugačije,
hierarchical nature of human knowledge
hijerarhijska priroda ljudskog znanja
food for thought. Thank you so much.
Mnogo ti hvala.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Laura Schulz - Cognitive scientistDevelopmental behavior studies spearheaded by Laura Schulz are changing our notions of how children learn.
Why you should listen
MIT Early Childhood Cognition Lab lead investigator Laura Schulz studies learning in early childhood. Her research bridges computational models of cognitive development and behavioral studies in order to understand the origins of inquiry and discovery.
Working in play labs, children’s museums, and a recently-launched citizen science website, Schultz is reshaping how we view young children’s perceptions of the world around them. Some of the surprising results of her research: before the age of four, children expect hidden causes when events happen probabilistically, use simple experiments to distinguish causal hypotheses, and trade off learning from instruction and exploration.
