Ingrid Betancourt was a presidential candidate in Colombia in 2002 when she was kidnapped by guerilla rebels. After six years in captivity and a high-profile rescue, she now writes about what she learned about fear, forgiveness and the divine.

Why you should listen

Born December 25, 1961, in Colombia, Ingrid Betancourt is a French-Colombian activist in the cause of freedom. She was a politician and presidential candidate in Colombia, celebrated for her determination to combat widespread corruption. In February 2002 she was taken hostage by the FARC, a communist guerrilla organization. For six and a half years, the FARC held her hostage in the Amazonian jungle. She was rescued on July 2, 2008.

Since her release, Betancourt has become a memoirist and fiction writer. Her first book, Even Silence Has Its End, which lyrically recounts her six years in the impenetrable jungle, was published in 2010. In 2016, she published a second work -- this time of fiction -- called The Blue Line, about the disappearances in Argentina during the Dirty War from 1976 to 1983.

Betancourt has received multiple international awards, including the French National Order of the Légion d’Honneur, the Spanish Prince of Asturias Prize of Concord, the Italian Prize Grinzane Cavour, and was nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to democratic values, freedom and tolerance.

The guards'衛士“ fury憤怒
148
517566

08:52
was nothing compared相比
to that of the other hostages人質,
149
520849
2468
08:56
because, obviously明顯 they were scared害怕 --
150
524020

08:59
we were all scared害怕 --

09:04
But for me,
153
532656

09:05
beyond fear恐懼 was the need
to defend保衛 my identity身分,
154
533951

09:12
to not let them turn me into

12:00
But after having lived生活

12:56
The third第三 step is to learn學習
how to develop發展 faith信仰.
220
764343
4562
13:03
I want to explain說明 it like this:
221
771174
3767
222
775790
1455
Jhon Frank Pinchao
13:10
was a police警察 officer
223
778109
2328
13:12
who had been a hostage人質
for more than eight years年份.
224
780461
2420
13:15
He was famous著名 for being存在
the biggest最大 scaredy-cat膽小的貓 of us all.
225
783565

13:22
But PinchoPincho -- I called him "PinchoPincho" --
226
790343
2755
但 Pincho,
13:25
PinchoPincho decided決定 that he wanted to escape逃逸.
227
793122
4655
Pincho
13:30
And he asked me to help him.
228
798372
1363
13:31
By that point, I basically基本上 had
a master's碩士 degree in escape逃逸 attempts嘗試.
229

13:35
(Laughter
230
803288
1425
13:37
So
231
805192
1232
13:40
we got started開始 but we had a delay延遲,
232
808194
1735
13:41
because first, PinchoPincho
had to learn學習 how to swim游泳.
233
809953
2659
13:45
And we had to carry攜帶 out
all these preparations準備 in total secrecy保密.
234
813437
4892
13:51
Anyway無論如何, when we finally最後
had everything ready準備,
235
819035
3378
13:54
PinchoPincho came來了 up to me
one afternoon下午 and said,
236
822437
4170

14:05
What do I do?"
239
833459
1170
14:08
"PinchoPincho,
240

242
841240

14:16
"Ingrid英格麗, you know I don't believe in God."
243
844011
3127
14:23
"God doesn't care關心. He'll地獄 still help you."
244

249
872017

14:46
They made製作 us dismantle拆除 the camp,

2761
14:49
During the march
251
877510

15:29

265
924772

15:43
That was an extraordinary非凡 moment時刻,
266
931464
3013
15:46
because ...

15:50
But faith信仰 is, too.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ingrid Betancourt - Writer, peace advocate
