Vous savez, j'écris pour les enfants,
00:18
and I'm probably America's

00:20
most widely read children's author, in fact.

le plus lu aux États-Unis.
00:22
And I always tell people

Je dis tout le temps
00:24
that I don't want to show up looking like a scientist.

3000
00:27
You can have me as a farmer, or in leathers,
5

3000
00:30
and no one has ever chose farmer.

Personne n'a jamais choisi le fermier.

I'm here today to talk to you

00:36
about circles and epiphanies.
8
21000
2000
de cercles et d'épiphanie.
00:38
And you know, an epiphany
9
23000
2000
Comme vous le savez, une épiphanie
00:40
is usually something you find that you dropped someplace.
10
25000
2000
00:42
You've just got to go around the block
11
27000
2000
00:44
to see it as an epiphany.
12
29000
2000
le vivre comme une épiphanie.
00:46
That's a painting of a circle.
13
31000
2000
Voici un tableau qui représente un cercle.
00:48
A friend of mine did that -- Richard Bollingbroke.
14
33000
3000
00:51
It's the kind of complicated circle
15
36000
2000
00:53
that I'm going to tell you about.
16
38000
2000
dont que vais vous parler.
00:55
My circle began back in the '60s
17

3000
Mon cercle commence dans les années '60
00:58
in high school in Stow, Ohio
18

01:00
where I was the class queer.

où j'étais le gay de la classe.
01:03
I was the guy beaten up bloody
20
48000
2000
J'étais celui qu'on battait au sang
01:05
every week in the boys' room,
21
50000
2000
chaque semaine dans le vestiaire des gars.
01:07
until one teacher saved my life.
22
52000
3000
Jusqu'au jour où la prof a changé m'a vie.
01:10
She saved my life by letting me go to the bathroom
23
55000
3000
01:13
in the teachers' lounge.
24
58000

des enseignants.
01:15
She did it in secret.
25
60000
2000
Elle le faisait en secret et
01:17
She did it for three years.
26
62000
2000
elle l'a fait pendant trois ans.
01:19
And I had to get out of town.
27
64000
3000
01:22
I had a thumb, I had 85 dollars,
28
67000
2000
01:24
and I ended up in San Francisco, California --
29
69000
4000
Je me suis ramassé à San Francisco, en Californie,
01:28
met a lover --
30
73000
3000
01:31
and back in the '80s, found it necessary
31
76000
2000
01:33
to begin work on AIDS organizations.
32
78000
5000
01:38
About three or four years ago,
33
83000
2000
Il y a de cela à peu près trois ou quatre ans,
01:40
I got a phone call in the middle of the night
34
85000
2000
01:42
from that teacher, Mrs. Posten,
35
87000
3000
01:45
who said, "I need to see you.
36
90000
2000
qui m'a dit, "Il faut que je te vois.
01:47
I'm disappointed
37
92000
2000
Je suis déçue que
01:49
that we never got to know each other as adults.
38
94000
3000
01:52
Could you please come to Ohio,
39
97000
3000
Est-ce que tu pourrais revenir en Ohio
01:55
and please bring that man
40
100000
2000
01:57
that I know you have found by now.
41
102000
3000
02:00
And I should mention
42
105000
2000
Il faut que je t'avertisse
02:02
that I have pancreatic cancer,
43
107000
3000
que j'ai le cancer du pancréas
02:05
and I'd like you to please
44
110000
2000
et que j'aimerais
02:07
be quick about this."
45
112000
3000
que tu fasses ça vite."
02:10
Well, the next day we were in Cleveland.
46
115000
2000
Le jour suivant, nous étions à Cleveland.
02:12
We took a look at her, we laughed, we cried,
47
117000
3000
Nous l'avons regardé, nous avons ri, nous avons pleuré,
02:15
and we knew that she needed to be in a hospice.
48
120000
4000
02:19
We found her one, we got her there,
49
124000
2000
02:21
and we took care of her
50
126000
2000
et nous avons pris soins d'elle
02:23
and watched over her family,
51
128000
2000
et de sa famille
02:25
because it was necessary.
52
130000
2000
parce que c'était nécéssaire
02:27
It's something we knew how to do.
53
132000
2000
02:29
And just as the woman who wanted to know me as an adult
54
134000
4000
02:33
got to know me,
55
138000
2000
m'a connu,
02:35
she turned into a box of ashes
56
140000
2000
02:37
and was placed in my hands.
57
142000
3000
02:40
And what had happened
58
145000
2000
Ce qui est arrivé,
02:42
was the circle had closed,
59
147000
2000
02:44
it had become a circle --
60
149000
3000
c'est devenu un cercle.
02:47
and that epiphany I talked about
61
152000
2000
L'épiphanie dont je parlais
02:49
presented itself.
62
154000
2000
s'est présentée à moi à ce moment-là.
02:51
The epiphany is
63
156000
2000
La leçon de cette histoire,
02:53
that death is a part of life.
64
158000
2000
02:55
She saved my life;
65
160000
3000
Elle a sauvé ma vie,
02:58
I and my partner saved hers.
66
163000
4000
03:02
And you know, that part of life needs everything
67
167000
2000
03:04
that the rest of life does.
68
169000
2000
03:06
It needs truth and beauty,
69
171000
2000
03:08
and I'm so happy it's been mentioned so much here today.
70
173000
3000
03:11
It also needs --
71
176000
3000
Ça prend aussi...
03:14
it needs dignity,
72
179000
2000
ça prend de la dignité,
03:16
love and pleasure,
73
181000
2000
de l'amour et du plaisir.
03:18
and it's our job to hand those things out.
74
183000
3000
03:21
Thank you.
75
186000
2000
Merci.
03:23
(Applause)

Jok Church - Cartoonist
Jok Church created the science-education comic strip "You Can with Beakman and Jax" and the zany TV series "Beakman's World."

Why you should listen

In his work, Jok Church loved helping kids learn basic concepts of science and experimentation -- with a healthy dash of fun. He created his comic strip You Can with Beakman & Jax in 1991 for his local newspaper in Marin County, California -- inspired by a stint answering kids' letters for Lucasfilm. The comic strip does not answer readers' questions directly. Rather, it gives directions to do a thing, a procedure, an experiment to learn the answer. It's about learning by doing. Active. Not passive.

Six Beakman & Jax books are best-sellers. Church created the long-running TV series Beakman's World, a hit in English and Spanish, and helped create the Beakman's World on Tour exhibit for science centers and museums. A longtime techie, he also served as the webmaster for artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Church died April 29, 2016, and will be much missed.
