Why you should listen

Fiorenzo Omenetto is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and leads the laboratory for Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics and Biophotonics at Tufts University and also holds an appointment in the Department of Physics. Formerly a J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory before joining Tufts, his research is focused on interdisciplinary themes that span nonlinear optics, nanostructured materials (such as photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers), optofluidics and biopolymer based photonics. He has published over 100 papers and peer-review contributions across these various disciplines.

Since moving to Tufts at the end of 2005, he has proposed and pioneered (with David Kaplan) the use of silk as a material platform for photonics, optoelectronics and high-technology applications. This new research platform has recently been featured in MIT's Technology Review as one of the 2010 "top ten technologies likely to change the world."

00:58
And it's technological

01:15
So this materialחוֹמֶר is silkמשי.
26

3000

01:22
So the questionשְׁאֵלָה is, how do you reinventלהמציא מחדש something
29

We want to know how you go from waterמַיִם and proteinחֶלְבּוֹן

51
118000
3000
02:16
And this is an insight
52
121000
2000
02:18
that cameבא, about two decadesעשרות שנים agoלִפנֵי,
53
123000
2000
02:20
from a personאדם that I'm very fortunateבַּר מַזָל to work with,
54

02:24
Davidדוד Kaplanקפלן.
55
129000
3000
02:27
And so we get this startingהחל materialחוֹמֶר.
56
132000
2000
02:29
And so this startingהחל materialחוֹמֶר is back to the basicבסיסי buildingבִּניָן blockלַחסוֹם.
57
134000
3000
02:32
And then we use this to do a varietyמגוון of things --
58
137000
2000
02:34
like, for exampleדוגמא, this filmסרט צילום.
59
139000
2000
02:36
And we take advantageיתרון of something that is very simpleפָּשׁוּט.
60
141000
2000
02:38
The recipeמַתכּוֹן to make those filmsסרטים
61
143000
2000
02:40
is to take advantageיתרון of the factעוּבדָה
62
145000
2000
02:42
that proteinsחלבונים are extremelyמְאוֹד smartלִכאוֹב at what they do.
63
147000
2000
02:44
They find theirשֶׁלָהֶם way to self-assembleעצמית להרכיב.
64
149000
2000
02:46
So the recipeמַתכּוֹן is simpleפָּשׁוּט: you take the silkמשי solutionפִּתָרוֹן, you pourלִשְׁפּוֹך it,
65
151000
3000
02:49
and you wait for the proteinחֶלְבּוֹן to self-assembleעצמית להרכיב.
66
154000
2000
02:51
And then you detachלנתק the proteinחֶלְבּוֹן and you get this filmסרט צילום,
67
156000
3000
02:54
as the proteinsחלבונים find eachכל אחד other as the waterמַיִם evaporatesמתאדה.
68
159000
3000
02:57
But I mentionedמוּזְכָּר that the filmסרט צילום is alsoגַם technologicalטֶכנוֹלוֹגִי.
69
162000
2000
02:59
And so what does that mean?
70
164000
2000
03:01
It meansאומר that you can interfaceמִמְשָׁק it
71
166000
3000
03:04
with some of the things that are typicalאופייני of technologyטֶכנוֹלוֹגִיָה,
72
169000
2000
03:06
like microelectronicsמיקרואלקטרוניקה and nanoscaleננומטרי technologyטֶכנוֹלוֹגִיָה.
73
171000
3000
03:09
And the imageתמונה of the DVDDVD here
74
174000
2000
03:11
is just to illustrateלהמחיש a pointנְקוּדָה
75
176000
2000
03:13
that silkמשי followsהבא very subtleעָדִין topographiesטופוגרפיות of the surfaceמשטח,
76
178000
4000
03:17
whichאיזה meansאומר that it can replicateלשכפל featuresמאפיינים on the nanoscaleננומטרי.
77
182000
3000
03:20
So it would be ableיכול to replicateלשכפל the informationמֵידָע
78
185000
2000
03:22
that is on the DVDDVD.
79
187000
3000
03:25
And we can storeחֲנוּת informationמֵידָע that's filmסרט צילום with waterמַיִם and proteinחֶלְבּוֹן.
80
190000
3000
03:28
So we triedניסה something out, and we wroteכתבתי a messageהוֹדָעָה in a pieceלְחַבֵּר of silkמשי,
81
193000
3000
03:31
whichאיזה is right here, and the messageהוֹדָעָה is over there.
82
196000
2000
03:33
And much like in the DVDDVD, you can readלקרוא it out opticallyאופטית.
83
198000
3000
03:36
And this requiresדורש a stableיַצִיב handיד,
84
201000
2000
03:38
so this is why I decidedהחליט to do it onstageעל הבמה in frontחֲזִית of a thousandאלף people.
85
203000
3000
03:42
So let me see.
86
207000
2000
03:44
So as you see the filmסרט צילום go in transparentlyבשקיפות throughדרך there,
87
209000
2000
03:46
and then ...
88
211000
2000
03:53
(Applause
89
218000
7000
04:00
And the mostרוב remarkableראוי לציון featמַעֲלָל
90
225000
2000
04:02
is that my handיד actuallyלמעשה stayedנשאר still long enoughמספיק to do that.
91
227000
3000
04:05
So onceפַּעַם you have these attributesתכונות
92
230000
3000
04:08
of this materialחוֹמֶר,
93
233000
2000
04:10
then you can do a lot of things.
94
235000
2000
04:12
It's actuallyלמעשה not limitedמוגבל to filmsסרטים.
95
237000
2000
04:14
And so the materialחוֹמֶר can assumeלְהַנִיחַ a lot of formatsפורמטים.
96
239000
3000
04:17
And then you go a little crazyמְטוּרָף, and so you do variousשׁוֹנִים opticalאוֹפּטִי componentsרכיבים
97
242000
3000

04:24
Or you can do beautifulיפה things
100
249000
2000
04:26
that, if the cameraמַצלֵמָה can captureלִלְכּוֹד, you can make.
101
251000
2000
04:28
You can addלְהוֹסִיף a thirdשְׁלִישִׁי dimensionalityממדי to the filmסרט צילום.
102
253000
3000
04:31
And if the angleזָוִית is right,
103
256000
2000
04:33
you can actuallyלמעשה see a hologramהולוגרמה appearלְהוֹפִיעַ in this filmסרט צילום of silkמשי.
104
258000
3000
04:38
But you can do other things.
105
263000
2000
04:40
You can imagineלדמיין that then maybe you can use a pureטָהוֹר proteinחֶלְבּוֹן to guideלהנחות lightאוֹר,
106
265000
2000
04:42
and so we'veיש לנו madeעָשׂוּי opticalאוֹפּטִי fibersסיבים.
107
267000
2000
04:44
But silkמשי is versatileמגוון and it goesהולך beyondמעבר opticsאוֹפְּטִיקָה.
108
269000
3000

And you can think of differentשונה formatsפורמטים.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fiorenzo Omenetto - Biomedical engineer
Fiorenzo G. Omenetto's research spans nonlinear optics, nanostructured materials (such as photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers), biomaterials and biopolymer-based photonics. Most recently, he's working on high-tech applications for silk.
