ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Harald Haas - Communications technology innovator
Harald Haas is the pioneer behind a new technology that can communicate as well as illuminate.

Why you should listen

Imagine using your car headlights to transmit data ... or surfing the web safely on a plane, tethered only by a line of sight. Harald Haas is working on it. He currently holds the Chair of Mobile Communications at the University of Edinburgh, and is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of pureLiFi Ltd as well as the Director of the LiFi Research and Development Center at the University of Edinburgh. His main research interests are in optical wireless communications, hybrid optical wireless and RF communications, spatial modulation, and interference coordination in wireless networks.

Haas has long been studying ways to communicate electronic data signals, designing modulation techniques that pack more data onto existing networks. But his latest work leaps beyond wires and radio waves to transmit data via an LED bulb that glows and darkens faster than the human eye can see. His group published the first proof-of-concept results demonstrating that it is possible to to turn commercially available light emitting diode (LED) light bulbs into broadband wireless transmission systems.

"It should be so cheap that it's everywhere," he says. "Using the visible light spectrum, which comes for free, you can piggy-back existing wireless services on the back of lighting equipment."

03:31
to visualizevisualizzare the energyenergia

52

Questo strumento mostra qualcosa
in questo momento.
03:35
And this instrumentstrumento showsSpettacoli
something at the momentmomento.
53
203095
2798
03:37
This is because the solarsolare cellcellula alreadygià
harvestsraccolti lightleggero from the ambientambiente lightleggero.
54
205917
4281
Questo perché la cella solare sta
producendo energia dalla luce ambientale.
Ora quello che vorrei fare per prima cosa
è accendere la luce,
03:43
Now what I would like to do first
is switchinterruttore on the lightleggero,
55
211102
2840
e, semplicemente, accenderò la luce,
03:45
and I'll simplysemplicemente, only switchinterruttore on the lightleggero,
56
213966
2106
per un momento,
03:48
for a momentmomento,
57

2108
03:50
and what you'llpotrai noticeAvviso is that
the instrumentstrumento jumpssalti to the right.
58
218228
3994
e quello che vedrete è che l'indicatore
si sposterà verso destra.
Quindi, la cella solare,
attualmente,
03:54
So the solarsolare cellcellula, for a momentmomento,
59
222904
1690
sta producendo energia
da questa fonte di luce artificiale.
03:56
is harvestingraccolta energyenergia
from this artificialartificiale lightleggero sourcefonte.
60
224618
3522
Se la spengo, vediamo l'indicatore
tornare verso sinistra.
04:00
If I turnturno it off, we see it dropsgocce.
61
228540
3278
04:03
I turnturno it on ...
62
231842
1183
La accendo...
Quindi, produciamo energia
con il pannello solare.
04:05
So we harvestraccolto energyenergia with the solarsolare cellcellula.
63
233049
2719
Ma ora vorrei attivare
lo streaming del video.
04:08
But nextIl prossimo I would like to activateattivare
the streamingstreaming of the videovideo.
64
236586
5323
E l'ho fatto premendo questo bottone.
04:15
And I've donefatto this
by pressingurgente this buttonpulsante.
65
243418
2324
Quindi ora questa lampada a LED
sta riproducendo un video
04:17
So now this LED lamplampada here
is streamingstreaming a videovideo
66
245766
4723
cambiando la luminosità del LED
in modo così minimo,
04:22
by changingmutevole the brightnessluminosità of the LED
in a very subtlesottile way,
67
250513
4132
in un modo che non è visibile
con i vostri occhi,
04:26
and in a way that you can't
recognizericonoscere with your eyeocchio,
68
254669
2498
perchè i cambiamenti sono troppo veloci
da poterli riconoscere.
04:29
because the changesi cambiamenti
are too fastveloce to recognizericonoscere.
69
257191
3256
04:33
But in orderordine to provedimostrare the pointpunto,
70
261384
2399
Ma al fine di provare
che sta funzionando,
04:35
I can blockbloccare the lightleggero of the solarsolare cellcellula.
71
263807
3145
posso bloccare la luce
della cella solare.
Prima di tutto notate
che la produzione di energia cala
04:40
So first you noticeAvviso
the energyenergia harvestingraccolta dropsgocce
72
268087
3223
e che anche il video si ferma.
04:43
and the videovideo stopsfermate as well.
73
271334
1692
04:45
If I removerimuovere the blockageostruzione,
the videovideo will restartricomincia.
74
273050

Se rimuovo il blocco,
il video riparte.
(Applausi)
04:49
(ApplauseApplausi)
75
277357
6229
E lo posso ripetere.
04:55
And I can repeatripetere that.
76
283610
2333
Quindi, fermiamo il video e si ferma
anche la generazione di energia.
04:57
So we stop the transmissiontrasmissione of the videovideo
and energyenergia harvestingraccolta stopsfermate as well.
77
285967
5251
Questo prova che il pannello solare
funziona come ricevitore.
05:03
So that is to showmostrare that the solarsolare cellcellula
actsatti as a receiverricevitore.
78
291242

05:08
But now imagineimmaginare that this LED lamplampada

79

sia un lampione, e c'è nebbia.
05:14
And so I want to simulatesimulare fognebbia,
80
302106
2303
Quindi voglio simulare la nebbia,
ed ecco perché ho portato
un fazzoletto con me.
05:16

And let me put the handkerchieffazzoletto
over the solarsolare cellcellula.
83
308656

E lasciatemi mettere il fazzoletto
sulla cella solare.
Prima di tutto notate
05:25

4197
ma la riproduzione del video continua.
05:31
but now the videovideo still continuescontinua.
86
319778

Questo vuol dire che,
nonostante l'ostruzione,
05:34
This meanssi intende, despitenonostante the blockageostruzione,
87

c'è abbastanza luce che attraversa
