ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rodney Brooks - Roboticist
Rodney Brooks builds robots based on biological principles of movement and reasoning. The goal: a robot who can figure things out.

Why you should listen

Former MIT professor Rodney Brooks studies and engineers robot intelligence, looking for the holy grail of robotics: the AGI, or artificial general intelligence. For decades, we've been building robots to do highly specific tasks -- welding, riveting, delivering interoffice mail -- but what we all want, really, is a robot that can figure things out on its own, the way we humans do.

Brooks realized that a top-down approach -- just building the biggest brain possible and teaching it everything we could think of -- would never work. What would work is a robot who learns like we do, by trial and error, and with many separate parts that learn separate jobs. The thesis of his work which was captured in Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, went on to become the title of the great Errol Morris documentary.

A founder of iRobot, makers of the Roomba vacuum, Brooks is now founder and CTO of Rethink Robotics, whose mission is to apply advanced robotic intelligence to manufacturing and physical labor. Its first robots: the versatile two-armed Baxter and one-armed Sawyer. Brooks is the former director of CSAIL, MIT's Computers Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.

07:45
and make them easierPiù facile to use?
121
447000
2000
07:47
And I want to actuallyin realtà use a robotrobot here --
122
449000
3000
Be', voglio servirmi di un robot, ora...
07:50
a robotrobot nameddi nome ChrisChris -- standstare in piedi up. Yeah. Okay.
123
452000
5000
un robot di nome Chris... Alzati. Perfetto. Ok.
07:57
Come over here. Now noticeAvviso, he thinkspensa robotsrobot have to be a bitpo stiffrigido.
124
459000
4000
08:01
He sortordinare of does that. But I'm going to --
125
463000
3000
Lui lo è, in un certo senso. Ma sto per...
08:04
ChrisChris AndersonAnderson: I'm just BritishBritannico. RBRB: Oh.
126
466000
2000
Chris Anderson: No, sono solo inglese. RB: Oh.

08:10
I'm going to showmostrare this robotrobot a taskcompito. It's a very complexcomplesso taskcompito.
129
472000
3000
08:13
Now noticeAvviso, he noddedannuì there, he was givingdando me some indicationindicazione
130

3000
Attenzione ora, annuisce, mi sta facendo capire

di comprendere il flusso di comunicazione.
08:19
And if I'd said something completelycompletamente bizarrebizzarro
132

E se dicessi qualcosa di completamente bizzarro,
08:21
he would have lookedguardato askancecon sospetto at me, and regulatedregolamentati the conversationconversazione.
133
483000
3000
08:24
So now I broughtportato this up in frontdavanti of him.
134
486000
3000
Ora gli metto questa di fronte.
08:27
I'd lookedguardato at his eyesocchi, and I saw his eyesocchi lookedguardato at this bottlebottiglia topsuperiore.
135
489000
4000
08:31
And I'm doing this taskcompito here, and he's checkingverifica up.
136
493000
2000
Compio questa azione, e lui sta osservando.
08:33
His eyesocchi are going back and forthvia up to me, to see what I'm looking at --
137
495000
3000
08:36
so we'venoi abbiamo got shareddiviso attentionAttenzione.
138
498000
2000
quindi siamo l'uno attento all'altro.
08:38
And so I do this taskcompito, and he lookssembra, and he lookssembra to me
139
500000
3000
Faccio questa azione, lui osserva, e osserva me
08:41
to see what's happeningavvenimento nextIl prossimo. And now I'll give him the bottlebottiglia,
140
503000
4000
per vedere cosa succederà dopo. Adesso gli consegno la bottiglia, e vediamo
08:45
and we'llbene see if he can do the taskcompito. Can you do that?
141
507000
2000
se riesce ad eseguire il compito. Riesci a farlo?
08:47
(LaughterRisate)
142
509000
3000
(Risate)
08:50
Okay. He's prettybella good. Yeah. Good, good, good.
143
512000
4000
Ok. È abbastanza bravo. Bene, bene.
08:54
I didn't showmostrare you how to do that.
144
516000
2000
Non ti ho mostrato come fare questo.
08:56
Now see if you can put it back togetherinsieme.
145
518000
2000
Prova a rimetterlo a posto, ora.
08:58
(LaughterRisate)
146
520000
2000
(Risate) Pensa che un robot
09:00
And he thinkspensa a robotrobot has to be really slowlento.
147

09:01
Good robotrobot, that's good.
148
523000
2000
Bravo robot, ottimo lavoro.
09:03
So we saw a bunchmazzo of things there.
149
525000
2000
Abbiamo visto alcune cose, dunque.
09:06
We saw when we're interactinginteragendo,
150
528000
3000
Abbiamo visto che quando interagiamo,

09:20
There was shareddiviso attentionAttenzione looking at the samestesso sortordinare of thing,

09:26
And we'venoi abbiamo been tryingprovare to put that into our lablaboratorio robotsrobot
156
548000
3000
09:29
because we think this is how you're going to want to interactinteragire with robotsrobot in the futurefuturo.
157
551000
4000
09:33
I just want to showmostrare you one technicaltecnico diagramdiagramma here.
158
555000
2000
Voglio mostrarvi un solo diagramma tecnico.
09:35
The mostmaggior parte importantimportante thing for buildingcostruzione a robotrobot that you can interactinteragire with sociallysocialmente
159
557000
4000
09:39
is its visualvisivo attentionAttenzione systemsistema.
160
561000
2000
è il suo sistema di attenzione visiva.
09:41
Because what it payspaga attentionAttenzione to is what it's seeingvedendo
161
563000
3000

09:47
So in the videosvideo I'm about to showmostrare you,
163
569000
3000
Nel video che sto per mostrarvi, quindi,
09:50
you're going to see a visualvisivo attentionAttenzione systemsistema on a robotrobot
164
572000
4000
09:54
whichquale has -- it lookssembra for skinpelle tonetono in HSVHSV spacespazio,

10:02
It lookssembra for highlyaltamente saturatedsaturato colorscolori, from toysGiocattoli.
167

Cerca colori molto saturi, come i giocattoli.
10:04
And it lookssembra for things that movemossa around.
168

Cerca oggetti che si muovono intorno,
10:06
And it weightspesi those togetherinsieme into an attentionAttenzione windowfinestra,

172
595000

10:17
And it lookssembra right at that.

E lo osserva.

E così i pesi dell'equazione cambiano.
10:30
And over here on the right,
178
612000
2000
Qui, sulla destra, abbiamo quello
10:32
this is what we call the StevenSteven SpielbergSpielberg memorialmemoriale modulemodulo.
179
614000

10:35
Did people see the moviefilm "AIAI"? (AudiencePubblico: Yes.)
180
617000

Avete visto il film "AI"? Pubblico: Sì.
10:37
RBRB: Yeah, it was really badcattivo, but --

10:56
And it getsprende boredannoiato, so it will then look away at something elsealtro.
187
638000

10:59
So, onceuna volta you've got that -- and here'secco a robotrobot, here'secco KismetKismet,
188
641000
4000

11:15
And it's got a little bitpo of an emotionalemotivo responserisposta here.
192
657000

Qui c'è una piccola risposta emotiva.

possiamo alzare il volume?
11:48
Can you hearsentire that now, out there? (AudiencePubblico: Yeah.)
202
690000
2000
Potete sentire adesso, laggiù? Pubblico: Sì.
11:50
KismetKismet: Do you really think so? Do you really think so?

15:18
(LaughterRisate)
269
900000
1000
(Risate)
15:19
So we're going to see more and more of this sortordinare of robotrobot
270
901000
3000
Perciò vedremo nei laboratori sempre più robot
15:22
over the nextIl prossimo fewpochi yearsanni in labslaboratori.
271
904000
2000
come questi, nei prossimi anni.
15:24
But then the biggrande questionsle domande, two biggrande questionsle domande that people askChiedere me are:
272
906000
5000
15:29
if we make these robotsrobot more and more human-likehuman-like,
273
911000
2000
se costruiamo questi robot sempre più "umani",
15:31
will we acceptaccettare them, will we -- will they need rightsdiritti eventuallyinfine?
274
913000
5000
15:36
And the other questiondomanda people askChiedere me is, will they want to take over?
275
918000
3000
15:39
(LaughterRisate)
276
921000
1000
(Risate)
15:40
And on the first -- you know, this has been a very HollywoodHollywood themetema
277
922000
3000
La prima è una domanda molto "hollywoodiana",
15:43
with lots of moviesfilm. You probablyprobabilmente recognizericonoscere these characterspersonaggi here --
278

con molti film [sul tema]. Probabilmente riconoscete questi personaggi --
15:46
where in eachogni of these casescasi, the robotsrobot want more respectrispetto.
279
928000
4000
15:50
Well, do you ever need to give robotsrobot respectrispetto?
280
932000
3000
Dovremo mai riconoscere ai robot più rispetto?
15:54
They're just machinesmacchine, after all.
281
936000
2000
Dopotutto, sono soltanto macchine...
15:56
But I think, you know, we have to acceptaccettare that we are just machinesmacchine.
282
938000
4000
16:00
After all, that's certainlycertamente what modernmoderno molecularmolecolare biologybiologia saysdice about us.
283
942000
5000
16:05
You don't see a descriptiondescrizione of how, you know,
284
947000
3000
16:08
MoleculeMolecola A, you know, comesviene up and docksbanchine with this other moleculemolecola.
285
950000

"Compare la molecola A, si lega a quest'altra molecola,

16:19
It's all mechanisticmeccanicistico. We are mechanismmeccanismo.
288
961000
3000
È tutto meccanicistico, siamo dei meccanismi.
16:22
If we are machinesmacchine, then in principleprincipio at leastmeno,
289
964000
3000
16:25
we should be ablecapace to buildcostruire machinesmacchine out of other stuffcose,
290
967000
4000
dovremmo poter costruire macchine
16:29
whichquale are just as alivevivo as we are.
291
971000
4000
vive quanto noi.
16:33
But I think for us to admitammettere that,
292
975000
2000
Ma per ammettere questo, credo sia necessario
16:35
we have to give up on our special-nessspeciale-ness, in a certaincerto way.
293
977000
3000
abbandonare la nostra convinzione di essere speciali.

16:50

17:00
RecentlyRecentemente we'venoi abbiamo been batteredmalconcio with the ideaidea that maybe
302
1002000
3000
17:03
we didn't even have our ownproprio creationcreazione eventevento, here on earthterra,
303
1005000
2000
la Creazione, qui sulla Terra. Un'idea
17:05
whichquale people didn't like much. And then the humanumano genomegenoma said,
304
1007000
3000
che la gente non ha molto amato. Inoltre, stando al genoma umano,
17:08
maybe we only have 35,000 genesgeni. And that was really --
305
1010000
3000
forse abbiamo solo 35.000 geni. E quello a molta gente
17:11
people didn't like that, we'venoi abbiamo got more genesgeni than that.
306
1013000
3000
17:14
We don't like to give up our special-nessspeciale-ness, so, you know,
307
1016000
3000
Quindi
17:17
havingavendo the ideaidea that robotsrobot could really have emotionsemozioni,
308
1019000

17:19
or that robotsrobot could be livingvita creaturescreature --

17:21
I think is going to be harddifficile for us to acceptaccettare.
310
1023000
2000
sarà per noi dura da accettare, credo.
17:23
But we're going to come to acceptaccettare it over the nextIl prossimo 50 yearsanni or so.
311
1025000
4000
17:27
And the secondsecondo questiondomanda is, will the machinesmacchine want to take over?
312
1029000
3000
E la seconda domanda è: "Le macchine vorranno sostituirci?"
17:30
And here the standardstandard scenarioscenario is that we createcreare these things,
313
1032000
5000
17:35
they growcrescere, we nurturenutrire them, they learnimparare a lot from us,
314
1037000
3000
17:38
and then they startinizio to decidedecidere that we're prettybella boringnoioso, slowlento.
315
1040000
4000
17:42
They want to take over from us.
316
1044000
2000
e vogliono prendere il nostro posto.
17:44
And for those of you that have teenagersadolescenti, you know what that's like.
317
1046000
3000
17:47

17:48
But HollywoodHollywood extendssi estende it to the robotsrobot.
319
1050000
3000
Ma Hollywood estende il tema ai robot.
17:51
And the questiondomanda is, you know,
320
1053000
3000
E la domanda è:
17:54
will someonequalcuno accidentallyaccidentalmente buildcostruire a robotrobot that takes over from us?
321
1056000
4000
17:58
And that's sortordinare of like this lonesolitario guy in the backyardcortile,
322
1060000
3000
18:01
you know -- "I accidentallyaccidentalmente builtcostruito a 747."
323
1063000
3000
dicesse: "Ho costruito un 747 per errore."
18:04
I don't think that's going to happenaccadere.
324
1066000
2000
Non penso che succederà mai.
18:06
And I don't think --
325
1068000
2000
E non credo --
18:08
(LaughterRisate)
326
1070000
1000
(Risate)
18:09
-- I don't think we're going to deliberatelydeliberatamente buildcostruire robotsrobot
327
1071000
3000
-- non credo che costruiremo deliberatamente robot
18:12
that we're uncomfortablescomodo with.
328
1074000
2000
che ci mettano a disagio.
18:14
We'llWe'll -- you know, they're not going to have a supersuper badcattivo robotrobot.
329
1076000
2000
Non ci sarà un robot super cattivo:
18:16
Before that has to come to be a mildlymoderatamente badcattivo robotrobot,
330
1078000
3000
18:19
and before that a not so badcattivo robotrobot.
331
1081000
2000
e prima ancora uno non così cattivo.
18:21
(LaughterRisate)
332
1083000
1000
(Risate)
18:22
And we're just not going to let it go that way.
333
1084000
2000
E impediremo loro di prendere quella piega.
18:24
(LaughterRisate)
334
1086000

(Risate)
18:25
So, I think I'm going to leavepartire it at that: the robotsrobot are comingvenuta,
335

Quindi credo che concluderò dicendo: i robot stanno arrivando,
18:31
