Why you should listen

As director of a groundbreaking robotics lab, Dennis Hong guides his team of students through projects on robot locomotion and mechanism design, creating award-winning humanoid robots like DARwIn (Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence). His team is known as RoMeLa (Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory) and operates at Virginia Tech.

Hong has also pioneered various innovations in soft-body robots, using a “whole-skin locomotion” as inspired by amoebae. Marrying robotics with biochemistry, he has been able to generate new types of motion with these ingenious forms. For his contributions to the field, Hong was selected as a NASA Summer Faculty Fellow in 2005, given the CAREER award by the National Science Foundation in 2007 and in 2009, named as one of Popular Science's Brilliant 10. He is also a gourmet chef and a magician, performing shows for charity and lecturing on the science of magic.

00:35
But before that, let's look at pop culture문화.

3000

00:57
I'm just going to show보여 주다 you how the robot기계 인간 works공장.

01:14
What you're doing is you really swing그네 your leg다리 and catch잡기 the fall가을,
24

01:25
We call that the concept개념 of passive수동태 dynamic동적 locomotion운동.
28

01:29
What you're doing is, when you stand up,

01:47
What you see over here, this is what we want to do next
37
92000
2000
01:49
We want to fold up the legs다리 and shoot사격 it up for long-range장거리 motion운동.
38
94000
4000
01:53
And it deploys배치하다 legs다리 -- it looks외모 almost거의 like "Star Wars전쟁" --
39
98000
3000
01:56
when it lands, it absorbs흡수하다 the shock충격 and starts시작하다 walking보행.

01:59
What you see over here, this yellow노랑 thing, this is not a death죽음 ray레이. (Laughter웃음)
41
104000
3000
02:02
This is just to show보여 주다 you that if you have cameras카메라
42
107000

02:04
or different다른 types유형 of sensors센서 --
43
109000

02:06
because it is tall, it's 1.8 meters미터 tall --
44
111000

02:08
you can see over obstacles장애물 like bushes덤불 and those kinds종류 of things.
45
113000
3000
02:11
So we have two prototypes
46
116000
2000
02:13
The first version번역, in the back, that's STriDERSTRIDER I.
47
118000
3000
02:16
The one in front, the smaller더 작은, is STriDERSTRIDER IIII.
48
121000
2000
02:18
The problem문제 that we had with STriDERSTRIDER I is
49
123000
2000
STriDER I 의 문제는
02:20
it was just too heavy무거운 in the body신체. We had so many많은 motors모터,
50
125000
3000
02:23
you know, aligning정렬 the joints관절, and those kinds종류 of things.
51
128000
2000
02:25
So, we decided결정적인 to synthesize종합하다 a mechanical기계의 mechanism기구
52
130000
4000
02:29
so we could get rid구하다 of all the motors모터, and with a single단일 motor모터
53
134000
3000
02:32
we can coordinate동등 어구 all the motions.
54
137000
2000
02:34
It's a mechanical기계의 solution해결책 to a problem문제, instead대신에 of using~을 사용하여 mechatronics메카트로닉스.
55
139000
3000
02:37
So, with this now the top상단 body신체 is light enough충분히. So, it's walking보행 in our lab;
56
142000
3000
02:40
this was the very first successful성공한 step단계.
57
145000
3000
02:43
It's still not perfected완성 된 -- its coffee커피 falls폭포 down --
58
148000
2000
02:45
so we still have a lot of work to do.
59
150000
3000
02:48
The second둘째 robot기계 인간 I want to talk about is called전화 한 IMPASS임프.
60
153000
3000
02:51
It stands스탠드 for Intelligent지능형 Mobility유동성 Platform플랫폼 with Actuated구동 Spoke System체계.
61
156000
4000
Intelligent Mobility Platform with Actuated Spoke System
02:55
So, it's a wheel-leg바퀴 다리 hybrid잡종 robot기계 인간.
62
160000
3000
02:58
So, think of a rimless무테의 wheel바퀴
63
163000
2000
03:00
or a spoke wheel바퀴,
64
165000
2000
03:02
but the spokes쐐기 individually개별적으로 move움직임 in and out of the hub바퀴통;
65
167000
3000
03:05
so, it's a wheel-leg바퀴 다리 hybrid잡종.
66
170000
2000
03:07
We are literally말 그대로 re-inventing다시 발명하다 the wheel바퀴 here.
67
172000
2000
03:09
Let me demonstrate시연하다 how it works공장.
68
174000
3000
03:12
So, in this video비디오 we're using~을 사용하여 an approach접근
69
177000

These are just the awards that we won in 2007 fall

12:21
So, really, we have five다섯 secrets기미.
283
726000
2000
12:23
First is: Where do we get inspiration영감?
284
728000
2000
12:25
Where do we get this spark불꽃 of imagination상상력?
285
730000
2000
12:27
This is a true참된 story이야기, my personal개인적인 story이야기.
286
732000
3000
12:30
At night when I go to bed침대, 3 - 4 a.m. in the morning아침,
287
735000
2000
12:32
I lie거짓말 down, close닫기 my eyes, and I see these lines윤곽 and circles동그라미
288
737000
3000
12:35
and different다른 shapes도형 floating떠 있는 around.
289
740000
2000
12:37
And they assemble모으다, and they form형태 these kinds종류 of mechanisms메커니즘.
290
742000
3000
12:40
And then I think, "Ah아 ~ this is cool시원한."
291
745000
2000
12:42
So, right next다음 것 to my bed침대 I keep a notebook수첩,
292
747000
2000
12:44
a journal일지, with a special특별한 pen that has a light on it, LED light,
293
749000
3000
12:47
because I don't want to turn회전 on the light and wake일어나 다 up my wife아내.
294
752000
2000
12:49
So, I see this, scribble갈겨 쓰다 everything down, draw무승부 things,
295
754000
2000
12:51
and I go to bed침대.
296
756000
2000
12:53
Every마다 day in the morning아침,
297
758000
2000
12:55
the first thing I do before my first cup of coffee커피,
298
760000
2000
12:57
before I brush브러시 my teeth, I open열다 my notebook수첩.
299
762000
2000
12:59
Many많은 times타임스 it's empty,
300
764000
2000
13:01
sometimes때때로 I have something there -- if something's뭔가 there, sometimes때때로 it's junk정크 --
301
766000
2000
13:03
but most가장 of the time I can't even read독서 my handwriting필적.
302
768000
3000
13:06
And so, 4 am in the morning아침, what do you expect배고 있다, right?
303
771000
3000
13:09
So, I need to decipher풀다 what I wrote.
304
774000
2000
13:11
But sometimes때때로 I see this ingenious영리한 idea생각 in there,
305
776000
3000
13:14
and I have this eureka유레카 moment순간.
306
779000
2000
13:16
I directly직접 run운영 to my home office사무실, sit앉다 at my computer컴퓨터,
307
781000
2000
13:18
I type유형 in the ideas아이디어, I sketch스케치 things out
308
783000
2000
13:20
and I keep a database데이터 베이스 of ideas아이디어.
309
785000
3000
13:23
So, when we have these calls전화 for proposals제안들,
310
788000
2000
13:25
I try to find a match시합 between중에서 my
311
790000
2000
312
792000
2000
13:29
and the problem문제. If there is a match시합 we write쓰다 a research연구 proposal신청,
313
794000
2000
13:31
get the research연구 funding자금 in, and that's how we start스타트 our research연구 programs프로그램들.
314
796000
4000
13:35
But just a spark불꽃 of imagination상상력 is not good enough충분히.
315
800000
3000
13:38
How do we develop나타나게 하다 these kinds종류 of ideas아이디어?
316
803000
2000
13:40
At our lab RoMeLaRoMeLa, the Robotics로봇 공학 and Mechanisms메커니즘 Laboratory실험실,
317
805000
3000
13:43
we have these fantastic환상적인 brainstorming브레인 스토밍 sessions세션들.
318
808000
3000
13:46
So, we gather모으다 around, we discuss즐기며 먹다 about problems문제들
319
811000
2000
13:48
and social사회적인 problems문제들 and talk about it.
320
813000
2000
13:50
But before we start스타트 we set세트 this golden황금의 rule규칙.
321
815000
3000
13:53
The rule규칙 is:
322
818000
2000
13:55
13:58
Nobody아무도 criticizes비판하다 any opinion의견.
324
823000
2000
14:00
This is important중대한, because many많은 times타임스 students재학생, they fear무서움
325
825000
2000
14:02
or they feel uncomfortable앉기 불편한 how others다른 사람 might think
326
827000
3000
14:05
about their그들의 opinions의견 and thoughts생각들.
327
830000
2000
14:07
So, once일단 you do this, it is amazing놀랄 만한
328
832000
2000
14:09
how the students재학생 open열다 up.
329
834000
2000
14:11
They have these wacky엉뚱한, cool시원한, crazy미친, brilliant훌륭한 ideas아이디어, and
330
836000
3000
14:14
the whole완전한 room is just electrified깜짝 놀라게 하는 with creative창조적 인 energy에너지.
331
839000
3000
14:17
And this is how we develop나타나게 하다 our ideas아이디어.
332
842000
3000
14:20
Well, we're running달리는 out of time. One more thing I want to talk about is,
333
845000
3000
14:23
you know, just a spark불꽃 of idea생각 and development개발 is not good enough충분히.
334
848000
4000
14:27
There was a great TED테드 moment순간,
335
852000
2000
14:29
I think it was Sir Ken시야 Robinson로빈슨, was it?
336
854000
3000
14:32
He gave a talk about how education교육
337
857000
2000
14:34
and school학교 kills살인 creativity독창성.
338
859000
2000
14:36
Well, actually사실은, there are two sides양쪽 to the story이야기.
339
861000
3000
14:39
So, there is only so much one can do
340
864000
3000
14:42
with just ingenious영리한 ideas아이디어
341
867000
2000
14:44
and creativity독창성 and good engineering공학 intuition직관.
342
869000
3000
14:47
If you want to go beyond...
14:49
if you want to go beyond...을 넘어서 a hobby취미 of robotics로봇 공학
344
874000

14:56
we need more than that. This is where school학교 comes온다 in.
347
881000
3000
14:59
Batman말 당번, fighting싸움 against반대 bad나쁜 guys,
348
884000
3000
15:02
he has his utility유용 belt벨트, he has his grappling격투 hook,
349
887000

15:04
he has all different다른 kinds종류 of gadgets가제트.
350
889000
2000
15:06
For us roboticists로봇 학자, engineers엔지니어 and scientists과학자들,
351
891000

15:08
these tools도구들, these are the courses행동 and classes수업 you take in class수업.
352
893000
5000
15:15
I have linear선의 algebra대수학, science과학, physics물리학,
354

15:17
even nowadays현대, chemistry화학 and biology생물학, as you've seen.
355
902000
3000
15:20
These are all the tools도구들 that we need.
356
905000
2000
15:22
So, the more tools도구들 you have, for Batman말 당번,
357
907000
2000
15:24
more effective유효한 at fighting싸움 the bad나쁜 guys,

359
911000

15:30
So, education교육 is very important중대한.
360
915000
3000
15:33
Also또한, it's not about that,
361
918000
2000
15:35
only about that. You also또한 have to work really, really hard단단한.
362
920000
2000
15:37
So, I always tell my students
363
922000

15:39
"Work smart똑똑한, then work hard단단한."

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dennis Hong - Roboticist
Dennis Hong is the founder and director of RoMeLa -- a Virginia Tech robotics lab that has pioneered several breakthroughs in robot design and engineering.
