ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Torsten Reil - Animating neurobiologist
By coding computer simulations with biologically modeled nervous systems, Torsten Reil and his company NaturalMotion breathe life into the animated characters inhabiting the most eye-poppingly realistic games and movies around.

Why you should listen
From modeling the mayhem of equine combat in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King to animating Liberty City gun battles in Grand Theft Auto IV, Torsten Reil's achievements are all over the map these days. Software that he helped create (with NaturalMotion, the imaging company he co-founded) has revolutionized computer animation of human and animal avatars, giving rise to some of the most breathtakingly real sequences in the virtual world of video games and movies- and along the way given valuable insight into the way human beings move their bodies.

Reil was a neural researcher working on his Masters at Oxford, developing computer simulations of nervous systems based on genetic algorithms-  programs that actually used natural selection to evolve their own means of locomotion. It didn't take long until he realized the commercial potential of these lifelike characters. In 2001 he capitalized on this lucrative adjunct to his research, and cofounded NaturalMotion. Since then the company has produced motion simulation programs like Euphoria and Morpheme, state of the art packages designed to drastically cut the time and expense of game development, and create animated worlds as real as the one outside your front door. Animation and special effects created with Endorphin (NaturalMotion's first animation toolkit) have lent explosive action to films such as Troy and Poseidon, and NaturalMotion's software is also being used by LucasArts in video games such as the hotly anticipated Indiana Jones.

But there are serious applications aside from the big screen and the XBox console: NaturalMotion has also worked under a grant from the British government to study the motion of a cerebral palsy patient, in hopes of finding therapies and surgeries that dovetail with the way her nervous system is functioning.

00:26
That technologytehnologie is simulatingsimularea humansoameni.
3

3000
Această tehnologie simulează fiinţa umană.
00:29
It's simulatedsimulat humansoameni with a simulatedsimulat bodycorp

Simulează omul cu un corp simulat

00:36
Now, before I talk more about that technologytehnologie,

00:39
let's have a quickrapid look at what humanuman characterscaractere look like
7
27000
3000
00:42
at the momentmoment in computercomputer gamesjocuri.

00:48
We alreadydeja saw that brieflyscurt yesterdayieri.
10
36000
2000
L-am văzut deja pe scurt, ieri.
00:50
And what you can see is -- it is actuallyde fapt a very good gamejoc.
11
38000
3000
00:53
It's one of the mostcel mai successfulde succes gamesjocuri of all time.
12
41000
3000
00:56
But what you'llveți see is that all the animationsanimații in this gamejoc are very repetitiverepetitive.
13
44000
4000
01:00
They prettyfrumos much look the samela fel.
14
48000
2000
Ele arată în mare parte la fel.
01:02
I've madefăcut him runalerga into a wallperete here, over and over again.
15
50000
3000
01:05
And you can see he looksarată always the samela fel.
16
53000
2000
01:07
The reasonmotiv for that is that these characterscaractere
17
55000
3000
Motivul este faptul că aceste personaje
01:10
are actuallyde fapt not realreal characterscaractere.
18
58000
2000
nu sunt de fapt personaje reale.
01:12
They are a graphicalgrafic visualizationvizualizare of a charactercaracter.
19
60000
4000
Ele sunt o vizualizare grafică a unui personaj.
01:16
To producelegume şi fructe these animationsanimații, an animatorAnimator at a studiostudio has to anticipateanticipa
20
64000
5000
01:21
what's going to happenîntâmpla in the actualreal gamejoc,
21
69000
3000
01:24
and then has to animateanima that particularspecial sequencesecvenţă.
22
72000
3000
01:27
So, he or she sitssta down, animatesanima it, and triesîncercări to anticipateanticipa what's going to happenîntâmpla,
23
75000
4000
01:31
and then these particularspecial animationsanimații are just playedjucat back
24
79000
3000
01:34
at appropriateadecvat timesori in the computercomputer gamejoc.
25
82000
3000
în momentele corespunzătoare în jocul pe calculator.
01:37
Now, the resultrezultat of that is that you can't have realreal interactivityinteractivitate.
26
85000
5000
01:42
All you have is animationsanimații that are playedjucat back
27
90000
3000
01:45
at more or lessMai puțin the appropriateadecvat timesori.
28
93000
2000
01:47
It alsode asemenea meansmijloace that gamesjocuri aren'tnu sunt really going to be as surprisingsurprinzător as they could be,
29
95000
5000
01:52
because you only get out of it, at leastcel mai puţin in termstermeni of the charactercaracter,
30
100000
3000
01:55
what you actuallyde fapt put into it.
31
103000
2000
01:57
There's no realreal emergenceapariție there.
32
105000
2000
Nu există nici o manifestare reală.
01:59
And thirdlyîn al treilea rând, as I said, mostcel mai of the animationsanimații are very repetitiverepetitive because of that.
33
107000
4000
02:03
Now, the only way to get around that
34
111000
2000
Acum, singura modalitate de a evita aceasta
02:05
is to actuallyde fapt simulatesimula the humanuman bodycorp
35
113000
2000
constă de fapt, în simularea corpului uman
02:07
and to simulatesimula that bitpic of the nervousagitat systemsistem of the braincreier that controlscontroale that bodycorp.
36
115000
5000
02:12
And maybe, if I could have you for a quickrapid demonstrationdemonstrație
37
120000
3000
02:15
to showspectacol what the differencediferență is --
38
123000
2000
pentru a arăta în ce constă diferenţa --
02:17
because, I mean, it's very, very trivialbanal.
39
125000
4000
02:21
If I pushApăsaţi ChrisChris a bitpic, like this, for exampleexemplu, he'lliad reactreacţiona to it.
40
129000
3000
02:24
If I pushApăsaţi him from a differentdiferit angleunghi, he'lliad reactreacţiona to it differentlydiferit,
41
132000
3000
02:27
and that's because he has a physicalfizic bodycorp,
42
135000
2000
02:29
and because he has the motormotor skillsaptitudini to controlControl that bodycorp.
43
137000
3000
02:32
It's a very trivialbanal thing.
44
140000
2000
Este un lucru foarte banal.
02:34
It's not something you get in computercomputer gamesjocuri at the momentmoment, at all.
45
142000
2000
02:36
Thank you very much. ChrisChris AndersonAnderson: That's it?
46
144000
2000
Mulţumesc mult. Chris Anderson: Asta e tot?
02:38
TorstenTorsten ReilReil: That's it, yes.
47
146000
2000
Torsten Reil: Asta e, da.
02:40
So, that's what we're tryingîncercat to simulatesimula --
48
148000
1000
02:41
not ChrisChris specificallyspecific, I should say, but humansoameni in generalgeneral.
49
149000
4000
02:46
Now, we starteda început workinglucru on this a while agoîn urmă at OxfordOxford UniversityUniversitatea,
50
154000
5000
02:51
and we triedîncercat to startstart very simplypur şi simplu.
51
159000
2000
02:53
What we triedîncercat to do was teacha preda a stickbăț figurefigura how to walkmers pe jos.
52
161000
3000
02:56
That stickbăț figurefigura is physicallyfizic stimulatedstimulate. You can see it here on the screenecran.
53
164000
3000
Această figură din beţe este stimulată fizic. O puteţi vedea aici pe ecran.
02:59
So, it's subjectsubiect to gravitygravitatie, has jointsarticulaţiilor, etcetc.
54
167000
3000
Deci, este supusă gravitaţiei, are articulaţii, etc.
03:02
If you just runalerga the simulationsimulare, it will just collapsecolaps, like this.
55
170000
3000
03:05
The trickycomplicat bitpic is now to put an AIAI controllercontroler in it
56
173000
4000
03:09
that actuallyde fapt makesmărci it work.
57
177000
2000
care de fapt îl face să funcţioneze.
03:11
And for that, we use the neuralneural networkreţea, whichcare we basedbazat on
58
179000
3000
03:14
that partparte of the nervousagitat systemsistem that we have in our spinecoloană vertebrală
59
182000
2000
acea parte a sistemului nervos existent în măduva spinării
03:16
that controlscontroale walkingmers in humansoameni.
60
184000
2000
care controlează mersul la om.
03:18
It's calleddenumit the centralcentral patternmodel generatorgenerator.
61
186000
2000
Se numeşte generatorul modelului central.
03:20
So, we simulatedsimulat that as well, and then the really trickycomplicat bitpic
62
188000
3000
03:23
is to teacha preda that networkreţea how to walkmers pe jos.
63
191000
2000
03:25
For that we used artificialartificial evolutionevoluţie -- geneticgenetic algorithmsalgoritmi.
64
193000
4000
Pentru aceasta am folosit evoluţia artificială - algoritmi genetici.
03:29
We heardauzit about those alreadydeja yesterdayieri,

Am auzit deja despre ele ieri

66
199000
3000
03:34

04:09
So that was the ideaidee behindin spate this.
82
237000

04:11
When we starteda început this, I seta stabilit up the simulationsimulare one eveningseară.

04:50

05:02
So, this is the one that can't walkmers pe jos at all.

5000
06:12
Now, the interestinginteresant bitpic is, if I movemișcare the obstacleobstacol a tinyminuscul bitpic to the right,
117
360000
3000
06:15
whichcare is what I'm doing now, here,
118
363000
2000
ceea ce fac chiar acum, aici,
06:17
it will fallcădea over it in a completelycomplet differentdiferit way.
119
365000
4000
06:24
And again, if you movemișcare the obstacleobstacol a tinyminuscul bitpic, it'llO să again fallcădea differentlydiferit.
120
372000
5000
06:29
(LaughterRâs)
121
377000
2000
(Râsete)
06:31
Now, what you see, by the way, at the toptop there,
122
379000
2000
06:33
are some of the neuralneural activationsactivari beingfiind fedhrănit into the virtualvirtual musclesmușchi.
123
381000
3000
06:36
Okay. That's the videovideo. Thanksmulţumesc.
124
384000
2000
Bine. Acesta e video-ul. Multumesc.
06:38
Now, this mightar putea look kinddrăguț of trivialbanal, but it's actuallyde fapt very importantimportant
125
386000
3000
06:41
because this is not something you get at the momentmoment
126
389000
2000
06:43
in any interactiveinteractiv or any virtualvirtual worldslumi.
127
391000
2000
oricărei înteracţiuni sau lumi virtuale.
06:48
Now, at this stageetapă, we decideda decis to startstart a companycompanie and movemișcare this furthermai departe,
128
396000
3000
06:51
because obviouslyevident this was just a very simplesimplu, blockyBlocky bipedbiped.
129
399000
3000
06:54
What we really wanted was a fulldeplin humanuman bodycorp.
130
402000
2000
06:56
So we starteda început the companycompanie.
131
404000
1000
aşa că am înfiinţat compania.
06:57
We hiredangajat a teamechipă of physicistsfizicienii, softwaresoftware-ul engineersingineri and biologistsbiologi
132
405000
5000
07:02
to work on this, and the first thing we had to work on
133
410000
3000
07:05
was to createcrea the humanuman bodycorp, basicallype scurt.
134
413000
4000
a fost să creăm practic corpul uman.
07:09
It's got to be relativelyrelativ fastrapid, so you can runalerga it on a normalnormal machinemaşină,
135
417000
3000
Trebuie sa fie relativ rapid, astfel încât să-l puteţi rula pe o maşină normală,
07:12
but it's got to be accurateprecis enoughdestul, so it looksarată good enoughdestul, basicallype scurt.
136
420000
3000
07:15
So we put quitedestul de a bitpic of biomechanicalbiomecanice knowledgecunoştinţe into this thing,
137
423000
3000
07:18
and triedîncercat to make it as realisticrealist as possibleposibil.
138
426000
4000
07:22
What you see here on the screenecran right now
139
430000
2000
07:24
is a very simplesimplu visualizationvizualizare of that bodycorp.
140
432000
2000
este o simplă vizualizare a acelui corp.
07:26
I should addadăuga that it's very simplesimplu to addadăuga things like hairpăr, clotheshaine, etcetc.,
141
434000
4000
07:30
but what we'vene-am doneTerminat here is use a very simplesimplu visualizationvizualizare,
142
438000
3000
07:33
so you can concentrateconcentra on the movementcirculaţie.
143
441000
2000
astfel încât să vă puteţi concentra asupra mişcării.
07:35
Now, what I'm going to do right now, in a momentmoment,
144
443000
3000
07:38
is just pushApăsaţi this charactercaracter a tinyminuscul bitpic and we'llbine see what happensse întâmplă.
145
446000
3000
07:46
Nothing really interestinginteresant, basicallype scurt.
146
454000
2000
Practic, nimic cu adevărat interesant.
07:48
It fallsFalls over, but it fallsFalls over like a ragcârpă dollpapusa, basicallype scurt.
147
456000
3000
07:51
The reasonmotiv for that is that there's no intelligenceinteligență in it.
148
459000
3000
07:54
It becomesdevine interestinginteresant when you put artificialartificial intelligenceinteligență into it.
149
462000
4000
Aceasta devine interesantă când puneţi inteligenţă artificială în ea.
07:58
So, this charactercaracter now has motormotor skillsaptitudini in the uppersuperior bodycorp --
150
466000
4000
Deci, acest personaj are acum abilităţi motorii în partea superioară a corpului.
08:02
nothing in the legspicioare yetinca, in this particularspecial one.
151
470000
2000
Nimic din picioare încă, la aceasta.
08:04
But what it will do -- I'm going to pushApăsaţi it again.
152
472000
3000
08:07
It will realizerealiza autonomouslyautonom that it's beingfiind pushedîmpins.
153
475000
2000
08:09
It's going to stickbăț out its handsmâini.
154
477000
2000
Va ridica mâinile
08:11
It's going to turnviraj around into the fallcădea, and try and catchcaptură the fallcădea.
155
479000
3000
08:20
So that's what you see here.
156
488000
2000
08:22
Now, it getsdevine really interestinginteresant
157
490000
2000
Acum, el devine cu adevarat interesant
08:24
if you then addadăuga the AIAI for the lowerinferior partparte of the bodycorp as well.
158
492000
4000
08:28
So here, we'vene-am got the samela fel charactercaracter.
159
496000
2000
Deci, aici avem acelaşi personaj.
08:30
I'm going to pushApăsaţi it a bitpic harderMai tare now,
160
498000
2000
08:32
harderMai tare than I just pushedîmpins ChrisChris.
161
500000
2000
mai tare decât l-am împins pe Chris.
08:34
But what you'llveți see is -- it's going to receivea primi a pushApăsaţi now from the left.
162
502000
4000
08:41
What you see is it takes stepspași backwardsînapoi,
163
509000
2000
08:43
it triesîncercări to counter-balancecontra echilibru,
164
511000
2000
încearcă să-şi menţină echilibrul,
08:45
it triesîncercări to look at the placeloc where it thinkscrede it's going to landteren.
165
513000
4000
08:49
I'll showspectacol you this again.
166
517000
2000
Vă voi arăta din nou.
08:51
And then, finallyin sfarsit hitshit-uri the floorpodea.
167
519000
3000
08:55
Now, this becomesdevine really excitingemoționant
168
523000
3000
Acum, acest lucru devine cu adevarat interesant
08:58
when you pushApăsaţi that charactercaracter in differentdiferit directionsdirectii, again, just as I've doneTerminat.
169
526000
5000
09:03
That's something that you cannotnu poti do right now.
170
531000
4000
09:07
At the momentmoment, you only have emptygol computercomputer graphicsgrafică in gamesjocuri.
171
535000
3000
09:10
What this is now is a realreal simulationsimulare. That's what I want to showspectacol you now.
172
538000
3000
09:13
So, here'saici e the samela fel charactercaracter with the samela fel behaviorcomportament I've just shownafișate you,
173
541000
3000
09:16
but now I'm just going to pushApăsaţi it from differentdiferit directionsdirectii.
174
544000
2000
09:18
First, startingpornire with a pushApăsaţi from the right.
175
546000
2000
09:23
This is all slowîncet motionmişcare, by the way, so we can see what's going on.
176
551000
3000
09:26
Now, the angleunghi will have changedschimbat a tinyminuscul bitpic,
177
554000
3000
Acum, unghiul a fost modificat un pic
09:29
so you can see that the reactionreacţie is differentdiferit.
178
557000
4000
aşa că puteţi vedea că reacţia este diferită.
09:33
Again, a pushApăsaţi, now this time from the frontfață.
179
561000
3000
09:37
And you see it fallsFalls differentlydiferit.
180
565000
2000
Şi vedeţi cade într-un mod diferit.
09:39
And now from the left --
181
567000
2000
Şi acum din stânga.
09:43
and it fallsFalls differentlydiferit.
182
571000
2000
Şi cade diferit.
09:45
That was really excitingemoționant for us to see that.
183
573000
2000
09:47
That was the first time we'vene-am seenvăzut that.
184
575000
2000
09:49
This is the first time the publicpublic seesvede this as well,
185
577000
2000
09:51
because we have been in stealthStealth modemod.
186
579000
2000
pentru că am fost în modul stealth.
09:53
I haven'tnu au shownafișate this to anybodycineva yetinca.
187
581000
2000
Nu am arătat încă nimănui acest lucru.
09:55
Now, just a fundistracţie thing:
188
583000
2000
Acum, un lucru amuzant.
09:57
what happensse întâmplă if you put that charactercaracter --
189
585000
2000
Ce se întâmplă dacă puneţi personajul --
09:59
this is now a woodendin lemn versionversiune of it, but it's got the samela fel AIAI in it --
190
587000
2000
10:01
but if you put that charactercaracter on a slipperyalunecos surfacesuprafaţă, like icegheaţă.
191
589000
2000
10:03
We just did that for a laugha rade, just to see what happensse întâmplă.
192
591000
3000
10:06
(LaughterRâs)
193
594000
1000
(Râsete)
10:07
And this is what happensse întâmplă.
194
595000
2000
Şi asta este ceea ce se intâmplă
10:09
(LaughterRâs)
195
597000
3000
(Râsete)
10:12
(ApplauseAplauze)
196
600000
3000
(Aplauze)
10:15
It's nothing we had to do about this.
197
603000
2000
10:17
We just tooka luat this charactercaracter that I just talkeda vorbit about,
198
605000
2000
10:19
put it on a slipperyalunecos surfacesuprafaţă, and this is what you get out of it.
199
607000
3000
10:22
And that's a really fascinatingfascinant thing about this approachabordare.
200
610000
3000
10:26
Now, when we wenta mers to filmfilm studiosStudios and gamesjocuri developersdezvoltatorii
201
614000
3000
10:29
and showeda arătat them that technologytehnologie, we got a very good responseraspuns.
202
617000
3000
10:32
And what they said was, the first thing they need immediatelyimediat is virtualvirtual stuntmencascadori.
203
620000
4000
10:36
Because stuntscascadorii are obviouslyevident very dangerouspericulos, they're very expensivescump,
204
624000
4000
Deoarece cascadoriile sunt, evident, foarte periculoase, sunt foarte scumpe,
10:40
and there are a lot of stuntcascador scenesscene that you cannotnu poti do, obviouslyevident,
205
628000
2000
10:42
because you can't really allowpermite the stuntmancascador to be seriouslySerios hurtrănit.
206
630000
3000
10:45
So, they wanted to have a digitaldigital versionversiune of a stuntmancascador
207
633000
3000
10:48
and that's what we'vene-am been workinglucru on for the pasttrecut fewpuțini monthsluni.
208
636000
2000
10:50
And that's our first productprodus that we're going to releaseeliberare in a couplecuplu of weekssăptămâni.
209
638000
5000
10:55
So, here are just a fewpuțini very simplesimplu scenesscene of the guy just beingfiind kickedlovit.
210
643000
5000
11:00
That's what people want. That's what we're givingoferindu- them.
211
648000
2000
Asta este ceea ce doresc oamenii. Asta e ceea ce le oferim.
11:02
(LaughterRâs)
212
650000
7000
(Râsete)
11:09
You can see, it's always reactingreacționând.
213
657000
2000
Puteţi vedea, reacţionează întotdeauna.
11:11
This is not a deadmort bodycorp. This is a bodycorp who basicallype scurt, in this particularspecial casecaz,
214
659000
4000
11:15
feelsse simte the forceforta and triesîncercări to protectproteja its headcap.
215
663000
2000
simte forţa şi încearcă să-şi protejeze capul.
11:17
Only, I think it's quitedestul de a bigmare blowa sufla again.
216
665000
2000
11:19
You feel kinddrăguț of sorry for that thing,
217
667000
2000
11:21
and we'vene-am seenvăzut it so manymulți timesori now that
218
669000
2000
şi am văzut-o de atât de multe ori că acum
11:23
we don't really careîngrijire any more.
219
671000
2000
nu ne mai pasa.
11:25
(LaughterRâs)
220
673000
1000
(Râsete)
11:26
There are much worsemai rau videosVideoclipuri than this, by the way, whichcare I have takenluate out, but ...
221
674000
4000
11:31
Now, here'saici e anothero alta one.
222
679000
2000
Acum, iată un altul.
11:33
What people wanted as a behaviorcomportament was to have an explosionexplozie,
223
681000
4000
11:37
a strongputernic forceforta appliedaplicat to the charactercaracter,
224
685000
2000
o forţă puternică aplicată personajului,
11:39
and have the charactercaracter reactreacţiona to it in midairaer.
225
687000
2000
11:41
So that you don't have a charactercaracter that looksarată limpLimp,
226
689000
2000
11:43
but actuallyde fapt a charactercaracter that you can use in an actionacțiune filmfilm straightdrept away,
227
691000
3000
11:46
that looksarată kinddrăguț of aliveîn viaţă in midairaer as well.
228
694000
2000
11:48
So this charactercaracter is going to be hitlovit by a forceforta,
229
696000
2000
11:50
it's going to realizerealiza it's in the airaer,
230
698000
2000
îşi dă seama că este în aer
11:52
and it's going to try and, well,
231
700000
3000
şi încearcă şi, ei bine,
11:55
stickbăț out its armbraţ in the directiondirecţie where it's landingaterizare.
232
703000
2000
11:59
That's one angleunghi; here'saici e anothero alta angleunghi.
233
707000
3000
12:02
We now think that the realismrealism we're achievingrealizarea with this
234
710000
2000
12:04
is good enoughdestul to be used in filmsfilme.
235
712000
2000
12:06
And let's just have a look at a slightlypuțin differentdiferit visualizationvizualizare.
236
714000
3000
12:09
This is something I just got last night
237
717000
2000
12:11
from an animationanimaţie studiostudio in LondonLondra, who are usingutilizând our softwaresoftware-ul
238
719000
3000
12:14
and experimentingexperimentarea with it right now.
239
722000
2000
12:16
So this is exactlyexact the samela fel behaviorcomportament that you saw,
240
724000
3000
12:19
but in a slightlypuțin better renderedprestate versionversiune.
241
727000
4000
dar într-o versiune puţin mai bună.
12:23
So if you look at the charactercaracter carefullycu grija,
242
731000
3000
12:26
you see there are lots of bodycorp movementsmișcări going on,
243
734000
2000
12:28
nonenici unul of whichcare you have to animateanima like in the oldvechi dayszi.
244
736000
2000
12:30
AnimatorsAnimatori had to actuallyde fapt animateanima them.
245
738000
2000
De fapt, animatorii ltrebuiau să le animeze.
12:32
This is all happeninglucru automaticallyautomat in the simulationsimulare.
246
740000
2000
12:34
This is a slightlypuțin differentdiferit angleunghi,
247
742000
2000
Acesta este un unghi uşor diferit,
12:39
and again a slowîncet motionmişcare versionversiune of this.
248
747000
2000
12:41
This is incrediblyincredibil quickrapid. This is happeninglucru in realreal time.
249
749000
4000
Aceasta este incredibil de rapid. Aceasta se întâmplă în timp real.
12:45
You can runalerga this simulationsimulare in realreal time, in frontfață of your eyesochi,
250
753000
2000
12:47
changeSchimbare it, if you want to, and you get the animationanimaţie straightdrept out of it.
251
755000
3000
12:50
At the momentmoment, doing something like this by handmână
252
758000
2000
12:52
would take you probablyprobabil a couplecuplu of dayszi.
253
760000
2000
probabil v-ar lua câteva zile.
12:55
This is anothero alta behaviorcomportament they requestedsolicitat.
254
763000
3000
12:58
I'm not quitedestul de sure why, but we'vene-am doneTerminat it anywayoricum.
255
766000
2000
13:00
It's a very simplesimplu behaviorcomportament that showsspectacole you the powerputere of this approachabordare.
256
768000
2000
13:02
In this casecaz, the character'spersonajului handsmâini
257
770000
2000
În acest caz, mâinile personajului
13:04
are fixedfix to a particularspecial pointpunct in spacespaţiu,
258
772000
2000
13:06
and all we'vene-am told the charactercaracter to do is to strugglelupta.
259
774000
3000
13:09
And it looksarată organicorganic. It looksarată realisticrealist.
260
777000
3000
Şi arată organic. Arată real.
13:12
You feel kinddrăguț of sorry for the guy.
261
780000
2000
13:14
It's even worsemai rau -- and that is anothero alta videovideo I just got last night --
262
782000
3000
13:17
if you renderface that a bitpic more realisticallyrealist.
263
785000
2000
13:23
Now, I'm showingarătând this to you just to showspectacol you
264
791000
2000
Acum, vă prezint aceasta doar pentru a va arăta
13:25
how organicorganic it actuallyde fapt can feel, how realisticrealist it can look.
265
793000
2000
13:27
And this is all a physicalfizic simulationsimulare of the bodycorp,
266
795000
3000
13:30
usingutilizând AIAI to driveconduce virtualvirtual musclesmușchi in that bodycorp.
267
798000
3000
13:35
Now, one thing whichcare we did for a laugha rade was
268
803000
3000
13:38
to createcrea a slightlypuțin more complexcomplex stuntcascador scenescenă,
269
806000
2000
13:40
and one of the mostcel mai famouscelebru stuntscascadorii is the one where JamesJames BondBond
270
808000
3000
13:43
jumpssalturi off a dambaraj in SwitzerlandElveţia and then is caughtprins by a bungeebungee.
271
811000
4000
13:48
Got a very shortmic de statura clipclamă here.
272
816000
2000
Am un scurt clip aici.
13:54
Yes, you can just about see it here.
273
822000
2000
Da, puteţi vedea asta aici.
13:56
In this casecaz, they were usingutilizând a realreal stuntcascador man. It was a very dangerouspericulos stuntcascador.
274
824000
3000
13:59
It was just votedau votat, I think in the SundayDuminica TimesOri, as one of the mostcel mai impressiveimpresionant stuntscascadorii.
275
827000
3000
14:02
Now, we'vene-am just triedîncercat and -- lookedprivit at our charactercaracter and askedîntrebă ourselvesnoi insine,
276
830000
3000
14:05
"Can we do that ourselvesnoi insine as well?"
277
833000
2000
"Putem să facem şi noi acest lucru?"
14:07
Can we use the physicalfizic simulationsimulare of the charactercaracter,
278
835000
2000
Putem folosi simularea fizică a personajului,
14:09
use artificialartificial intelligenceinteligență,
279
837000
2000
a inteligenţei artificiale,
14:11
put that artificialartificial intelligenceinteligență into the charactercaracter,
280
839000
2000
să introducem această inteligenţă artificială în personaj,
14:13
driveconduce virtualvirtual musclesmușchi, simulatesimula the way he jumpssalturi off the dambaraj,
281
841000
4000
14:17
and then skydiveSkydive afterwardsdupă aceea,
282
845000
2000
şi apoi să plonjeze în aer,
14:19
and have him caughtprins by a bungeebungee afterwardsdupă aceea?
283
847000
2000
14:21
We did that. It tooka luat about altogethercu totul just two hoursore,
284
849000
3000
Am făcut asta. Ne-a luat vreo două ore,
14:24
prettyfrumos much, to createcrea the simulationsimulare.
285
852000
2000
destul de mult pentru a crea simularea.
14:26
And that's what it looksarată like, here.
286
854000
2000
Şi în felul acesta arată, aici.
14:37
Now, this could do with a bitpic more work. It's still very earlydin timp stagesetape,
287
865000
3000
14:40
and we prettyfrumos much just did this for a laugha rade,
288
868000
2000
14:42
just to see what we'dne-am get out of it.
289
870000
2000
14:44
But what we foundgăsite over the pasttrecut fewpuțini monthsluni
290
872000
2000
14:46
is that this approachabordare -- that we're prettyfrumos much standardstandard uponpe --
291
874000
3000
14:49
is incrediblyincredibil powerfulputernic.
292
877000
2000
este incredibil de puternică.
14:51
We are ourselvesnoi insine surpriseduimit what you actuallyde fapt get out of the simulationssimulări.
293
879000
4000
14:55
There's very oftende multe ori very surprisingsurprinzător behaviorcomportament that you didn't predictprezice before.
294
883000
4000
14:59
There's so manymulți things we can do with this right now.
295
887000
2000
15:01
The first thing, as I said, is going to be virtualvirtual stuntmencascadori.
296
889000
3000
Primul lucru, aşa cum am spus, urmează să fie cascadorul virtual.
15:04
SeveralMai multe studiosStudios are usingutilizând this softwaresoftware-ul now to producelegume şi fructe virtualvirtual stuntmencascadori,
297
892000
4000
15:08
and they're going to hitlovit the screenecran quitedestul de sooncurând, actuallyde fapt,
298
896000
2000
15:10
for some majormajor productionsproducții.
299
898000
2000
pentru câteva producţii importante.
15:12
The secondal doilea thing is videovideo gamesjocuri.
300
900000
3000
Cel de-al doilea lucru sunt jocurile video.
15:15
With this technologytehnologie, videovideo gamesjocuri will look differentdiferit and they will feel very differentdiferit.
301
903000
4000
15:19
For the first time, you'llveți have actorsactori that really feel very interactiveinteractiv,
302
907000
3000
15:22
that have realreal bodiesorganisme that really reactreacţiona.
303
910000
2000
15:24
I think that's going to be incrediblyincredibil excitingemoționant.
304
912000
3000
Cred că va fi incredibil de incitant.
15:27
ProbablyProbabil startingpornire with sportssport gamesjocuri,
305
915000
2000
Probabil începând cu jocurile sportive
15:29
whichcare are going to becomedeveni much more interactiveinteractiv.
306
917000
2000
care vor deveni mult mai interactive.
15:31
But I particularlyîn special am really excitedexcitat
307
919000
1000
Dar eu sunt încântat în mod special
15:32
about usingutilizând this technologytehnologie in onlinepe net worldslumi,
308
920000
3000
de folosirea acestei tehnologii în lumile online
15:35
like there, for exampleexemplu, that TomTom MelcherMelcher has shownafișate us.
309
923000
3000
15:38
The degreegrad of interactivityinteractivitate you're going to get
310
926000
2000
15:40
is totallyintru totul differentdiferit, I think, from what you're gettingobtinerea right now.
311
928000
3000
15:44
A thirdal treilea thing we are looking at and very interestedinteresat in is simulationsimulare.
312
932000
4000
15:49
We'veNe-am been approachedabordat by severalmai mulți simulationsimulare companiescompanii,
313
937000
2000
15:51
but one projectproiect we're particularlyîn special excitedexcitat about, whichcare we're startingpornire nextUrmător → monthlună,
314
939000
3000
15:54
is to use our technologytehnologie -- and in particularspecial, the walkingmers technologytehnologie --
315
942000
4000
15:58
to help aidajutor surgeonschirurgi who work on childrencopii with cerebralcerebrală palsyparalizie,
316
946000
4000
16:02
to predictprezice the outcomerezultat of operationsoperațiuni on these childrencopii.
317
950000
3000
16:05
As you probablyprobabil know,
318
953000
2000
Cum probabil ştiţi,
16:07
it's very difficultdificil to predictprezice what the outcomerezultat of an operationoperație is
319
955000
3000
16:10
if you try and correctcorect the gaitmers.
320
958000
2000
dacă încerci să corectezi mersul.
16:12
The classicclasic quotecitat is, I think, it's unpredictableimprevizibil at bestCel mai bun,
321
960000
3000
16:15
is what people think right now, is the outcomerezultat.
322
963000
3000
16:18
Now, what we want to do with our softwaresoftware-ul is allowpermite our surgeonschirurgi to have a toolinstrument.
323
966000
4000
16:22
We're going to simulatesimula the gaitmers of a particularspecial childcopil
324
970000
3000
Urmează să simultăm mersul unui anume copil
16:25
and the surgeonchirurg can then work on that simulationsimulare
325
973000
3000
şi chirurgul poate lucra pe acea simulare
16:28
and try out differentdiferit waysmoduri to improveîmbunătăţi that gaitmers,
326
976000
2000
16:30
before he actuallyde fapt commitsangajează to an actualreal surgeryinterventie chirurgicala.
327
978000
3000
16:33
That's one projectproiect we're particularlyîn special excitedexcitat about,
328
981000
2000
16:35
and that's going to startstart nextUrmător → monthlună.
329
983000
2000
şi va începe luna viitoare.
16:39
Just finallyin sfarsit, this is only just the beginningînceput.
330
987000
3000
În fine, acesta este doar începutul.
16:42
We can only do severalmai mulți behaviorscomportamente right now.
331
990000
2000
Putem replica doar câteva comportamente acum.
16:44
The AIAI isn't good enoughdestul to simulatesimula a fulldeplin humanuman bodycorp.
332
992000
3000
16:47
The bodycorp yes, but not all the motormotor skillsaptitudini that we have.
333
995000
3000
16:50
And, I think, we're only there if we can have something like balletbalet dancingdans.
334
998000
3000
Şi, cred, vom ajunge acolo doar dacă vom putea simula ceva de genul baletului.
16:53
Right now, we don't have that
335
1001000
2000
Acum nu avem asta
16:55
but I'm very sure that we will be ablecapabil to do that at some stageetapă.
336
1003000
2000
16:57
We do have one unintentionalneintenţionată dancerdansator actuallyde fapt,
337
1005000
3000
17:00
the last thing I'm going to showspectacol you.
338
1008000
2000
17:02
This was an AIAI contourcontur that was producedprodus and evolvedevoluat --
339
1010000
3000
17:05
half-evolvedjumătate a evoluat, I should say -- to producelegume şi fructe balanceechilibru, basicallype scurt.
340
1013000
3000
17:08
So, you kicklovitură the guy and the guy'sbaieti supposedpresupus to counter-balancecontra echilibru.
341
1016000
3000
Deci, loveşti individul şi acesta ar trebui să-şi menţină echilibrul.
17:11
That's what we thought was going to come out of this.
342
1019000
3000
17:14
But this is what emergeda apărut out of it, in the endSfârşit.
343
1022000
2000
17:17
(MusicMuzica)
344
1025000
10000
(Muzică)
17:27
BizarrelyBizar, this thing doesn't have a headcap. I'm not quitedestul de sure why.
345
1035000
3000
17:31
So, this was not something we actuallyde fapt put in there.
346
1039000
2000
17:33
He just starteda început to createcrea that dancedans himselfse.
347
1041000
4000
A început să creeze singur dansul.
17:37
He's actuallyde fapt a better dancerdansator than I am, I have to say.
348
1045000
3000
17:41
And what you see after a while --
349
1049000
2000
Şi ceea ce vedeţi după un timp --
17:43
I think he even goesmerge into a climaxpunctul culminant right at the endSfârşit.
350
1051000
2000
17:49
And I think -- there you go.
351
1057000
3000
Şi cred că, asta este.
17:52
(LaughterRâs)
352
1060000
2000
(Râsete)
17:54
So, that all happeneds-a întâmplat automaticallyautomat. We didn't put that in there.
353
1062000
2000
17:56
That's just the simulationsimulare creatingcrearea this itselfîn sine, basicallype scurt.
354
1064000
3000
Aceasta e simularea creată de personaj, practic.
17:59
So it's just --
355
1067000
2000
Deci doar asta este --
18:01
(ApplauseAplauze)
356
1069000
1000
(Aplauze)
18:02
Thanksmulţumesc.
357
1070000
2000
Mulţumesc.
18:05
Not quitedestul de JohnIoan TravoltaTravolta yetinca, but we're workinglucru on that as well,
358
1073000
3000
18:08
so thanksMulțumiri very much for your time.
359
1076000
2000
aşa că vă mulţumesc foarte mult pentru timpul acordat.
18:10
Thanksmulţumesc.
