ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sergei Lupashin - Aerial robotics researcher
Sergei Lupashin imagines new uses for flying robots. He's a 2014 TED Fellow.

Why you should listen

When Sergei Lupashin saw how an aerial photograph of massive protests around the 2011 Russian federal elections changed the media silence around the subject, the aerial robotics engineer realized the truth-telling value of the bird’s-eye view. Yet aerial photographs, even those taken by unmanned aerial vehicles, are tricky to produce: it’s difficult to pilot a UAV safely, and government regulations restrict their use.

Lupashin gets around both obstacles with his new invention, the Fotokite – a lightweight, camera-equipped quadricopter controlled with a tether (for the purposes of this demo, a dog leash). He turns one on, points it in a direction, and it flies out, hovering at a consistent angle. Then he launches a second, and a third. While the Fotokite would have a huge impact on journalism, it should also prove useful for archeologists, architects, wildlife biologists, emergency responders and more. The possibilities are endless. If you had one, Lupashin asks, what would you do with it?

00:42
the world世界 media媒体 largely大部分 ignored忽视 it.
14

1984
00:44
Now, there was a group of photographers
15
32237
2082
00:46
who kind of flew flying飞行 cameras相机 as a hobby爱好
16
34319
3318
00:49
usually平时 photographing拍摄 things like the Sphinx狮身人面像,
17
37637
2913

01:10
Here's这里的 one of the panoramas全景.
25
57886
1574
01:11
So in a single image图片,

01:13
you can really see the scale规模 of this event事件
27

01:16

01:20
the colors颜色, the banners横幅.

01:26
All in a single image图片, which哪一个 was really cool to me.
31
74366
3002
01:29
And I think, in the future未来,
32
77368
2059
01:31
journalism新闻学 and many许多 other professions职业,
33
79427
2486
01:34
there are flying飞行 cameras相机 already已经
quite相当 commonly常用 out there,
34
81913
2519
01:36
but I think, you wait a few少数 months个月, a few少数 years年份,
35
84432
3441
01:40
and for many许多 professions职业, it's really going to be
36
87873
2037

01:43
And it make sense. It's

38
91755
2239
01:46
Nothing really communicates相通
this scale规模, for example,
39
93994
3489
01:49
in context上下文, in a way that this does.
40
97483
3024
01:52
But there are a few少数 hurdles障碍,
and they are quite相当 basic基本
41
100507
2418
01:57
One is piloting试点.
43
104962
1249
01:58
So for this image图片, they flew a camera相机,
44
106211
3925
02:02
a five kilogram公斤 device设备 with an SLR单反 under it.
45
110136
4826
02:07
It's quite相当 heavy, lots of
02:11
It's a bit uncomfortable不舒服 to fly,
47
119438
2430
02:14
probably大概 also for the operator操作者.
48
121868
1477
02:15
In fact事实, you can see that on the
back of the pilot's飞行员 shirt衬衫, it says,
49
123345
3562
02:19
"No questions问题 until直到 landing降落"
50
126907
2059
“降落之前不回答问题”
02:21
in Russian俄语 and in English英语,
51
128966
1884
02:23
because people are curious好奇, and they'll他们会 go tap龙头 you,
52
130850
2374
02:25
and then you lose失去 your focus焦点 and things happen发生.
53
133224
2508
02:27
And these guys are great. They're professionals专业人士;
54
135732
2215
02:30
they're really careful小心 in what they do.
55
137947
2993
02:33
So in the protests抗议, maybe you noticed注意到,
56
140940
2609
02:35
they flew over the river so it was quite相当 safe安全.
57
143549
2858
02:38
But this doesn't necessarily一定 apply应用 to
58
146407
3004
02:41
all people and all conditions条件,
59
149411
1709
02:43
so we really have to make piloting试点 easier更轻松.
60
151120
2397
02:45
The other problem问题 is regulations法规,
61
153517
2282
02:47
or rather, the lack缺乏 of good regulation.
62
155799
3026
02:51
For many许多 good reasons原因, it's just difficult
63
158825
1913
02:52
to come up with common共同 sense laws法律
64
160738
2122
02:55
to regulate调节 flying飞行 cameras相机.
65
162860
2051
02:57
So we already已经 have cameras相机.
66
164911
2328
02:59
Everyone大家 here, I'm sure, has a
smartphone手机 with a camera相机, right?
67
167239
2576
03:02
There are more and more of them.
68

03:28
I think we have to defuse化解 the situation情况.
79
195939
1969
03:30
We have to come up with responsible主管 solutions解决方案

03:44
So this is the FotokiteFotokite.
85
212722

Well, let me see, it's a quadrocopter

03:49

about it is there's a leash皮带.
87
217526

It's literally按照字面 a dog leash皮带. It's very convenient方便.
88
221834

03:57
And the neat整齐 thing about it is,
89

03:59
to fly it, there's no joysticks操纵杆, nothing like this.
90
227155
2384
04:01
You just turn it on
91
229539
2338
04:04
and you point in the direction方向 that you want to fly.
92
231877

04:06
You give it a little twist.
93

04:08
That's kind of the way you communicate

04:36
And of course课程, we can build建立 on top最佳 of this.
102
264316
2139

04:41
You can turn it on.
104
