ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anna Heringer - Architect
Anna Heringer’s sustainable designs lend breathtaking forms to easily-available local materials while developing the skills and consciousness of their builders.

Why you should listen

Before she became an architect, a visit to a small village in Bangladesh immediately hooked Anna Heringer on an ancient and yet neglected building material -- earth. With its easy availability, durability and endless recyclability, she realized, there was a reason its use has persisted for thousands of years.

Since then, Heringer’s love affair with sustainable materials has deepened, resulting in acclaimed projects like woven bamboo hostels in China and the METI Handmade School in Rudrapur, where, along with local workers and schoolchildren, she created a building that drew on locally abundant materials and fostered modern, sustainable building skills in local craftsmen. In the 2014 book, The Future of Architecture, she and her coauthors argue for a future that is low-impact and adaptable.

In fact事實, it's the 11th rainy多雨的 season季節
for this school學校 now,
75
247159
3747
04:26
and the walls牆壁 are standing常設 strong強大.

04:29
(Applause

257131

04:33
So how does it work?
79
261664
1342
04:35
First rule規則, a good foundation基礎
that keeps保持 the wall dry from the ground地面,
80
263030
4156
04:39
and second第二 rule規則, a good roof屋頂
that protects保護 from the top最佳,
81
267210
3696
04:48
so that the rainwater雨水
cannot不能 run down the wall fast快速,
84
276503
4208
04:52
and these speed速度 breakers斷路器
could be lines of bamboo
85
280735
3282
04:56
or stones石頭 or straw稻草 mixed into the mud,
86
284041
3581
04:59
just like a hill爬坡道 needs需求 trees樹木 or rocks岩石
in order訂購 to prevent避免 erosion侵蝕.
87
287646
5261
05:04
It works作品 just the same相同 way.
88
292931
1373
05:07
And people always ask me
if I have to add cement水泥 to the mud,
89
295340
4033
05:11
and the answer回答 is no.
90
299397
1475
05:13
There is no stabilizer
no coating塗層 on these walls牆壁,
91
301311
3739
05:17
only in the foundation基礎.
92
305074
1324
05:20
So this is the close-up特寫 of the wall
93
308294
1818
05:25
and as much as I grew成長 a bit older舊的,
95
313620
2440
05:28
the wall got some wrinkles皺紋 as well.
96
316084

05:29
The edges邊緣 my not be as sharp尖銳 as before,
97
317830
2167
05:32
but it still looks容貌 pretty漂亮 good,
98
320021
2152
05:34
and if it needs需求 repairing修復,
99
322197
1730
05:35
it is really easy簡單 to do.
100
323951
1991
05:37
You just take the broken破碎 part部分,
101
325966
1743
05:39
make it wet, and put it back on the wall,
102
327733
2738
05:42
and it will look the same相同 as before.
103
330495
2023
05:44
Wish希望 that would work on me, too.
104
332542
1543
05:46
(Laughter
105
334109
3301
05:50
Yeah, and the great thing is,
106
338685
2156
05:52
if an earth地球 wall is not needed需要 anymore,
107
340865
2421
05:55
it can go back to the ground地面 it came來了 from,
108
343310
3241
05:58
turn into a garden花園,
109
346575
1908
06:00
or get fully充分 recycled回收
without any loss失利 of quality質量.
110
348507
3523
06:04
There's no other material材料
that can do this,
111
352607
2091
06:06
and this is why mud is so excellent優秀
in terms條款 of environmental環境的 performance性能.
112
354722
4325
06:12
What about the economic經濟 sustainability可持續性?
113
360421
2135
06:15
When we built內置 the school學校,
114
363252
1266
06:16
I practically幾乎 lived生活
on the construction施工 site現場,
115
364542
2377
06:18
and in the evening晚間, I used to go
with the workers工人 to the market市場,
116
366943
3024
06:21
and I could see
how they spent花費 their money.
117
369991
2076
06:24
And they would buy購買
the vegetables蔬菜 from their neighbors鄰居,
118
372984
3300
06:28
they would get a new haircut理髮
or a new blouse襯衫 from the tailor裁縫.
119
376308
3285
06:32
And because the main主要 part部分
of the building建造 budget預算
120
380858
3858
06:36
was spent花費 on craftsmanship手藝,
121
384740
2145
06:38
the school學校 wasn't just a building建造,
122
386909
2432
06:41
it became成為 a real真實 catalyst催化劑
for local本地 development發展,
123
389365
4164
06:45
and that made製作 me happy快樂.
124
393553
1500
06:48
If I had designed設計 the school學校
in cement水泥 and steel,
125
396989
2398
06:51
this money would have been exported出口
and lost丟失 for those families家庭.
126
399411
3603
06:56
(Applause
127
404514
4174
07:01
The building建造 budget預算 at that time
was 35,000 euros歐元 --
128
409935
3571
07:05
it's probably大概 doubled翻倍 by now --
129
413530
1961
07:07
and this is a lot of money
for that region地區,
130
415515
3088
07:10
and especially特別 because this money
is working加工 within the community社區
131
418627
4005
07:14
and rotating旋轉 fast快速,
132
422656
1278
07:15
and not on the stock股票 market市場.
133
423958
1682
07:18
So when it comes to the economic經濟
sustainability可持續性 of my project項目,
134
426402
4857

07:28
How many許多 of you in here

你有?好。
07:39
Yeah.
141
447139
1151
07:40
It seems似乎 totally完全 out of our focus焦點,
142
448314
3165
07:43
but approximately three billion十億 people

143
451503
4634
07:48
are living活的 in earth地球 houses房屋,
144
456161
2483
07:50
and it is a traditional傳統 building建造 material材料
145
458668

07:52
in Europe歐洲 just as much as in Africa非洲.
146
460978
2713
07:59
mud is not considered考慮 worthy值得
of being存在 studied研究 at universities高校 ...
148
467641
3665
08:04
so I brought the dirt污垢 to Harvard哈佛,
149
472281

(Laughter
150

08:09
precisely恰恰 60 tons of dirt污垢

08:34
and we usually平時 don't go around cities城市

160
502395

08:44
(Laughter
162

08:48
Of course課程, this was a small-scale小型 project項目,
163
516603
2007
08:50
but in terms條款 of awareness-building提高認識
and in terms條款 of education教育,
164
518634
3096
08:53
it was like an acupuncture針刺 trigger觸發 point.
165
521754
2530
08:57
And in fact事實, in more and more countries國家,
166
525701
3580
are not allowed允許 to be built內置 anymore
167
529305
4985
09:06
although雖然 they're traditional傳統
and have lasted歷時 for hundreds數以百計 of years年份,
168
534314
3502
09:09
and not because the material材料 is weak,
169
537840
2016
09:11
but because there are
no architects建築師 and engineers工程師
170
539880
3152
09:15
who know how to deal合同 with that material材料.
171
543056
2436
09:17
So education教育 on all levels水平,
172
545516
1674
09:19
for craftsmen工匠, engineers工程師 and architects建築師,
173
547214
2676
09:21
is really strongly非常 needed需要.
174
549914
1767
09:27
like prefabrication預製 developed發達
by my colleague同事 Martin馬丁 Rauch勞赫,
176
555453
3093

177

09:34
And he has created創建 technologies技術

178
562580
3610
09:38
for prefabrication預製

09:40
that include包括 insulation絕緣,

and all sorts排序 of electrical電動 fittings配件
181

09:46
that can be layered分層
to multistoried樓閣 buildings房屋,
182
574281
2293
09:48
and this is important重要 in order訂購 to scale規模 up
183
576598
2677
09:51
and in order訂購 to fasten up the processes流程,
184
579299
1968
09:53
like in the RicolaRicola Herb中藥 Center中央
in Switzerland瑞士.
185
581291
3300
09:58
And finally最後, we need good built內置 projects項目
186
586555
3128
10:01
that prove證明 you can build建立
with an ancient material材料
187
589707
3095
10:04
in a very modern現代 way.
188
592826
1868
10:07
It is not a matter
of how old a material材料 is;
189
595434
3694
重點不在材料有多古老;
10:11
it's a matter of our creative創作的
ability能力 to use it today今天.
190
599152
3481
10:16
These, for example, are three hostels旅館
191
604936
2255
10:19
that I did in China中國 in the village Baoxi包西,
192

10:25
The outside shape形狀 is woven編織 bamboo,
194
613859

10:28
and the inside core核心
is stones石頭 and rammed earth地球.
195
616574
3563
10:33
And it is a traditional傳統 building建造 material材料.
196
621058
2456
10:35
Even large parts部分
of the Great Wall of China中國
197
623538
2193
10:37
have been built內置 with rammed earth地球,
198
625755
1645
10:39
but it's getting得到 replaced更換 by concrete具體.
199
627424
2293
10:42
And this trend趨勢 is happening事件 very fast快速.
200
630411
3474
10:45
Within only a couple一對 of years年份,
201
633909
2976
10:48
China中國 has consumed消費 more cement水泥

202
636909
2993
10:51
in the entire整個 20th century世紀.
203
639926
2236
10:54
And this trend趨勢 of replacing更換
10:58
with materials物料 that require要求
a lot of energy能源,
205
646151
2253
11:00
that are energy-intensive能源密集型,

11:02

207

11:04
is really clearly明確地 contributing貢獻
to climate氣候 change更改.
208
652303
3340
11:07
And we have alternatives
11:09
such這樣 as mud, stones石頭, timber木材,

210
657104
4251
11:13
that are totally完全 effective有效 options選項
for all sorts排序 of purposes目的.
211
661379
3888
11:17
This, for example,
is an office辦公室 building建造 that we did
212
665926

11:25
and the material材料 is low-tech技術含量低,
