Filmed:

How do we find fulfillment in a world that's constantly changing? Raymond Tang struggled with this question until he came across the ancient Chinese philosophy of the Tao Te Ching. In it, he found a passage comparing goodness to water, an idea he's now applying to his everyday life. In this charming talk, he shares three lessons he's learned so far from the "philosophy of water." "What would water do?" Tang asks. "This simple and powerful question ... has changed my life for the better."

57
173048
3252
03:09
Ever since that day,
58
177239
1635
03:10
I've been trying to apply the concepts
in this passage to my day-to-day life.
59
178898
5057
03:16
And today, I'd like to share with you
three lessons I learned so far
60
184406
3301
03:19
from this philosophy of water --
61
187731
1849
03:21
three lessons that I believe
have helped me find greater fulfillment
62
189604
4358
03:25
in almost everything that I do.
63
193986
1641
03:29
The first lesson is about humility.
64
197023
2517
03:32
If we think about water
flowing in a river,
65
200475
2310
03:34
it is always staying low.
66
202809
1995
03:37
It helps all the plants grow
and keeps all the animals alive.
67
205847
3063
03:41
It doesn't actually draw
any attention to itself,
68
209427
2570
03:44
nor does it need
any reward or recognition.
69
212021
2335
03:47
It is humble.
70
215442
1268
03:49
But without water's humble contribution,
71
217792
2499
03:52
life as we know it may not exist.
72
220315
2533
03:57
Water's humility taught me
a few important things.
73
225103
2589
04:00
It taught me that instead of acting
like I know what I'm doing
74
228492
3508
04:04
or I have all the answers,
75
232024
1696
04:05
it's perfectly OK to say,
76
233744
2055
04:07
"I don't know.
77
235823
1365
04:09
I want to learn more,
78
237212
1397
04:10
and I need your help."
79
238633
1252
04:12
It also taught me that, instead
of promoting my glory and success,
80
240911
4093
04:17
it is so much more satisfying to promote
the success and glory of others.
81
245028
3858
04:21
It taught me that, instead of doing things
where I can get ahead,
82
249879
3904
04:25
it so much more fulfilling and meaningful
83
253807
2072
04:27
to help other people overcome
their challenges so they can succeed.
84
255903
3530
04:33
With a humble mindset,
85
261473
1152
04:34
I was able to form a lot richer
connections with the people around me.
86
262649
3835
04:39
I became genuinely interested
in the stories and experiences
87
267180
3595
04:42
that make them unique and magical.
88
270799
1952
04:45
Life became a lot more fun,
89
273235
1295
04:46
because every day I'd discover
new quirks, new ideas
90
274554
3047
04:49
and new solutions to problems
I didn't know before,
91
277625
2404
04:52
all thanks to the ideas
and help from others.
92
280370
3090
04:57
All streams eventually flow to the ocean
93
285093
2833
04:59
because it is lower than them.
94
287950
1708
05:02
Humility gives water its power.
95
290965
2948
05:06
But I think it gives us the capacity
to remain grounded,
96
294649
4404
05:11
to be present,
97
299077
1358
05:12
to learn from and be transformed by
the stories of the people around us.
98
300459
4547
05:18
The second lesson I learned
is about harmony.
99
306434
2923
05:21
If we think about
water flowing towards a rock,
100
309919
2372
05:24
it will just flow around it.
101
312315
1363
05:26
It doesn't get upset,
it doesn't get angry,
102
314125
2579
05:28
it doesn't get agitated.
103
316728
1524
05:30
In fact, it doesn't feel much at all.
104
318276
1881
05:32
When faced with an obstacle,
somehow water finds a solution,
105
320687
4469
05:37
without force, without conflict.
106
325662
2333
05:41
When I was thinking through this,
I began to understand
107
329955
2628
05:44
why I was feeling stressed out
in the first place.
108
332607
2475
05:47
Instead of working in harmony
with my environment,
109
335506
2516
05:50
I was working against it.
110
338046
1666
05:52
I was forcing things to change
111
340369
1498
05:53
because I was consumed
by the need to succeed or to prove myself.
112
341891
4024
05:58
In the end, nothing did.
113
346616
1635
06:00
And I got more frustrated.
114
348775
1547
06:03
By simply shifting my focus
from trying to achieve more success
115
351211
3445
06:06
to trying to achieve more harmony,
116
354680
2746
06:09
I was immediately able
to feel calm and focused again.
117
357450
3470
06:13
I started asking questions like:
118
361796
1857
06:15
Will this action bring me greater harmony
119
363677
2722
06:18
and bring more harmony to my environment?
120
366423
2332
06:20
Does this align with my nature?
121
368779
2340
06:24
I became more comfortable
simply being who I am,
122
372388
2873
06:27
rather than who I'm supposed to be
or expected to be.
123
375285
2912
06:31
Work actually became easier,
124
379809
1959
06:33
because I stopped focusing
on things that I cannot control
125
381792
2730
06:36
and only on the things that I can.
126
384546
1857
06:38
I stopped fighting with myself,
127
386427
2793
06:41
and I learned to work
with my environment to solve its problems.
128
389244
3684
06:46
Nature does not hurry.
129
394267
2007
06:48
Yet, everything is accomplished.
130
396879
1858
06:51
That's Tao Te Ching's way
of describing the power of harmony.
131
399704
3548
06:56
Just as water is able to find a solution
without force or conflict,
132
404260
4086
07:01
I believe we can find a greater
sense of fulfillment in our endeavors
133
409006
4143
07:05
by shifting focus
from achieving more success
134
413173
3301
07:08
to achieving more harmony.
135
416498
1460
07:11
The third lesson I learned
from the philosophy of water
136
419228
4159
07:15
is about openness.
137
423411
1438
07:17
Water is open to change.
138
425744
2119
07:20
Depending on the temperature,
it can be a liquid, solid or gas.
139
428395
3923
07:24
Depending on the medium it's in,
140
432965
1532
07:26
it can be a teapot, a cup
or a flower vase.
141
434521
3251
07:30
In fact, it's water's ability to adapt
and change and remain flexible
142
438566
4310
07:34
that made it so enduring through the ages,
143
442900
2365
07:37
despite all the changes
in the environment.
144
445289
2241
07:41
We also live in a world today
of constant change.
145
449002
3354
07:44
We can no longer expect to work
to a static job description
146
452979
3206
07:48
or follow a single career path.
147
456209
1965
07:50
We, too, are expected to constantly
reinvent and refresh our skills
148
458792
3833
07:54
to stay relevant.
149
462649
1150
07:57
In our organization,
we host a lot of hackathons,
150
465419
2794
08:00
where small groups
or individuals come together
151
468237
2256
08:02
to solve a business problem
in a compressed time frame.
152
470517
2742
08:05
And what's interesting to me
is that the teams that usually win
153
473601
3277
08:08
are not the ones with the most
experienced team members,
154
476902
3342
08:12
but the ones with members
who are open to learn,
155
480268
2785
08:15
who are open to unlearn
156
483077
1600
08:16
and who are open to helping each other
157
484998
2119
08:19
navigate through
the changing circumstances.
158
487141
2460
08:23
Life is like a hackathon in some way.
159
491244
1932
08:26
It's calling to each and every one of us
to step up, to open up
160
494014
4344
08:30
and cause a ripple effect.
161
498382
1469
08:32
Now, we can stay behind closed doors
and continue to be paralyzed
162
500800
4167
08:36
by our self-limiting beliefs, such as:
163
504991
2808
08:39
"I will never be able to talk
about Chinese philosophy
164
507823
2533
08:42
in front of a huge audience."
165
510380
1404
08:43
(Laughter)
166
511808
1048
08:44
Or we can just open up and enjoy the ride.
167
512880
2475
08:47
It can only be an amazing experience.
168
515828
2271
08:51
So humility, harmony and openness.
169
519077
3042
08:54
Those are the three lessons I learned
from the philosophy of water so far.
170
522703
3605
08:58
They nicely abbreviate to H-H-O,
171
526752
2572
09:01
or H2O.
172
529348
1170
09:02
(Laughter)
173
530542
1063
09:03
And they have become
my guiding principles in life.
174
531629
3247
09:07
So nowadays, whenever I feel stressed,
175
535885
2620
09:10
unfulfilled, anxious
or just not sure what to do,
176
538529
3472
09:14
I simply ask the question:
177
542025
1513
09:16
What would water do?
178
544247
1453
09:17
(Laughter)
179
545724
1222
09:18
This simple and powerful question
inspired by a book
180
546970
3556
09:22
written long before the days
of bitcoin, fintech and digital technology
181
550550

He is also actively connecting culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) talents with growth opportunities through his involvement with Westpac's Cultural Diversity Leadership Employee Action Group.

A technology geek at heart, Tang is excited by the possibilities at the intersection of technology and philosophy. He believes that great technology should help us connect deeper with ourselves, so that we can discover different ways to make a difference whilst staying true to who we are as individuals.
