ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jonathan Drori - Educator
Jonathan Drori commissioned the BBC's very first websites, one highlight in a long career devoted to online culture and educational media -- and understanding how we learn.

Why you should listen

Jonathan Drori has dedicated his career to media and learning. As the Head of Commissioning for BBC Online, he led the effort to create bbc.co.uk, the online face of the BBC (an effort he recalls fondly). He came to the web from the TV side of the BBC, where as an editor and producer he headed up dozens of television series on science, education and the arts.

After almost two decades at the BBC, he's now a director at Changing Media Ltd., a media and education consultancy, and is a visiting professor at University of Bristol, where he studies educational media and misperceptions in science. He continues to executive produce the occasional TV series, including 2004's award-winning "The DNA Story" and 2009's "Great Sperm Race." He is on the boards of the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Woodland Trust.

Thank you. I have two missionsmisija here todaydanas.

3000
Hvala vam. Danas imam dvije misije.
00:18
The first is to tell you something about pollenpelud, I hopenada,
1
3000
4000
00:22
and to convinceuvjeriti you that it's more than just something that getsdobiva up your nosenos.
2
7000
3000
00:25
And, secondlydrugo, to convinceuvjeriti you
3
10000
2000
I druga je, uvjeriti vas
00:27
that everysvaki home really oughttreba to have a scanningskeniranje electronelektron microscopemikroskopom.
4
12000
3000
da svaka kuća treba imati pretraživački elektronski mikroskop.

(Smijeh)
00:32
PollenPelud is a flower'scvijet je way of makingizrađivanje more flowerscvijeće.
6
17000
4000
Pelud je sredstvo kojim cvijet stvara još cvijeća.
00:36
It carriesnosi malemuški sexseks cellsStanice
7
21000
2000
On nosi muške spolne stanice
00:38
from one flowercvijet to anotherjoš.
8
23000
2000
od jednog cvijeta do drugog.
00:40
This givesdaje us geneticgenetski diversityraznovrsnost,
9
25000
2000
Daje nam genetsku raznolikost,
00:42
or at leastnajmanje it givesdaje the plantsbilje geneticgenetski diversityraznovrsnost.
10
27000
2000
ili barem daje biljkama genetsku raznolikost.
00:44
And it's really ratherradije better not to matemat u šahu with yourselfsami.
11
29000
4000
00:48
That's probablyvjerojatno truepravi of humansljudi as well, mostlyuglavnom.
12
33000
4000
00:52
PollenPelud is producedizrađen by the anthersanthers of flowerscvijeće.
13
37000
2000
Pelud se stvara na prašnicima cvjetova.
00:54
EachSvaki antherprašnik can carrynositi up to 100,000 grainsžitarice of pollenpelud,
14
39000
5000
00:59
so, it's quitedosta prolificplodan stuffstvari.
15
44000
2000
Tako da su to poprilično plodne stvari.
01:01
And it isn't just brightsvijetao flowerscvijeće
16
46000
2000
I nemaju samo žarki cvjetovi
01:03
that have pollenpelud; it's alsotakođer treesstabla and grassestrave.
17
48000
4000
pelud, imaju ga i drveće i trave.
01:07
And rememberzapamtiti that all our cerealžitarica cropsusjevi are grassestrave as well.
18
52000
3000
01:12
Here is a scanningskeniranje electronelektron micrographmikroskopa of a grainžitarica of pollenpelud.
19
57000
4000
Ovo je pretražujući elektronski mikrograf jednog zrnca peludi.
01:16
The little holerupa in the middlesrednji, we'lldobro come to a bitbit laterkasnije,
20
61000
3000
Do objašnjenja ove male rupe u sredini ćemo doći malo kasnije.
01:19
but that's for the pollenpelud tubecijev
21
64000
2000
Ali to je za peludnu cjevčicu
01:21
to come out laterkasnije on. A very tinysićušan tubecijev.
22
66000
2000
01:23
So, that's 20 micrometersmikrometara acrosspreko,
23
68000
2000
Dakle, to je 20 mikrometara poprečno,
01:25
that pollenpelud grainžitarica there.
24
70000
2000
to zrnce peluda.
01:27
That's about a 50thth of a millimetermilimetar.
25
72000
2000
To je otprilike pedeseti dio milimetra.
01:29
But not all pollenpelud is quitedosta so simplejednostavan looking.
26
74000
3000
Ali ne izgleda sav pelud tako jednostavno.
01:32
This is MorinaMorina. This is a plantbiljka --
27
77000
3000
Ovo je Morina. To je biljka
01:35
whichkoji I've always thought to be ratherradije tediousdosadan --
28
80000
2000
01:37
namedpod nazivom after MorinMorin,
29
82000
2000
nazvana po Morinu,
01:39
who was an enterprisingpoduzetni Frenchfrancuski gardenervrtlar,
30
84000
2000
koji je bio poduzetan francuski vrtlar,
01:41
who issuedizdaje the first seedsjeme catalogkatalog
31
86000
2000
koji je prvi izdao katalog sjemena,
01:43
in 1621.
32
88000
2000
1621.
01:45
But anywayu svakom slučaju, take a look at its pollenpelud.
33
90000
3000
Svejedno, pogledajte njen pelud.
01:49
This is amazingnevjerojatan, I think.
34
94000
2000
Ovo je zadivljujuće, ja mislim.
01:51
That little holerupa in the middlesrednji there is for the pollenpelud tubecijev,
35
96000
2000
01:53
and when the pollenpelud findsnalazi its specialposeban femaležena spotmjesto
36
98000
3000
I kada pelud nađe svoje posebno žensko mjesto
01:56
in anotherjoš MorinaMorina flowercvijet,
37
101000
2000
u drugog Morina cvijeta,
01:58
just on the right speciesvrsta, what happensdogađa se?
38
103000
3000
na pravoj vrsti, što se događa?
02:01
Like I said, pollenpelud carriesnosi the malemuški sexseks cellsStanice.
39
106000
3000
Kako sam rekao, pelud nosi muške spolne stanice.
02:04
If you actuallyzapravo didn't realizeostvariti that plantsbilje have sexseks,
40
109000
3000
Ako stvarno niste shvaćali da biljke imaju spolni život,
02:07
they have rampantbijesan, promiscuouspomiješan
41
112000
2000
one imaju bujan, promiskuitetan
02:09
and really quitedosta interestingzanimljiv and curiousznatiželjan sexseks. Really.
42
114000
2000
i zaista zanimljiv i znatiželjan spolni život.
02:11
(LaughterSmijeh) A lot.
43
116000
4000
(Smijeh)
02:15
My storypriča is actuallyzapravo not about plantbiljka propagationRazmnožavanje,
44
120000
3000
Moja priča zapravo nije o razmnožavanju biljaka,
02:18
but about pollenpelud itselfsebe.
45
123000
2000
već o samom peludu.
02:20
"So, what are pollen'spelud je propertiesnekretnine?" I hearčuti you askpitati.
46
125000
3000
Pitate se koje su to osobine peludi?
02:23
First of all, pollenpelud is tinysićušan. Yes we know that.
47
128000
2000
Kao prvo, pelud je sićušan. Da, to znamo.
02:25
It's alsotakođer very biologicallybiološki activeaktivan,
48
130000
2000
Također je biološki vrlo aktivan,
02:27
as anyonebilo tko with haysijeno fevergroznica will understandrazumjeti.
49
132000
2000
što će bilo tko pogođen peludnom groznicom razumjeti.
02:29
Now, pollenpelud from plantsbilje, whichkoji are wind-dispersedVjetar raspršuje --
50
134000
3000
Pelud iz biljaka koji se rasprostire zrakom,
02:32
like treesstabla and grassestrave and so on --
51
137000
3000
kao kod drveća, trava i tako dalje,
02:35
tendskloni to causeuzrok the mostnajviše haysijeno fevergroznica.
52
140000
2000
uzrokuje najviše alergijskih reakcija.
02:37
And the reasonrazlog for that is they'vešto ga do got to chucktrupac out
53
142000
2000
A razlog je taj, da moraju izbaciti
02:39
massesmase and massesmase of pollenpelud to have any chanceprilika
54
144000
2000
mnoštva i mnoštva peluda kako bi imali bilo kakvu šansu
02:41
of the pollenpelud reachingdostizanje anotherjoš plantbiljka of the sameisti speciesvrsta.
55
146000
4000
da pelud dođe do druge biljke iste vrste.
02:45
Here are some examplesprimjeri --
56
150000
2000
Ovdje su neki primjeri.
02:47
they're very smoothglatko, nesmetano if you look at them --
57
152000
3000
Vrlo su uglađeni ako pogledate ove slike
02:50
of treedrvo pollenpelud that is meantznačilo to be carriedprenosi by the windvjetar.
58
155000
3000
02:53
Again -- this time, sycamoreJavor -- wind-dispersedVjetar raspršuje.
59
158000
2000
02:55
So, treesstabla: very boringdosadan flowerscvijeće,
60
160000
3000
Dakle, drveće, vrlo dosadni cvjetovi,
02:58
not really tryingtežak to attractprivući insectsinsekata.
61
163000
3000
koji ne pokušavaju privući kukce.
03:01
CoolCool pollenpelud, thoughiako.
62
166000
2000
Ali ipak pribran pelud.
03:03
This one I particularlynaročito like.
63
168000
2000
Ovaj mi se posebno sviđa.
03:05
This is the MontereyMonterey PineBor, whichkoji has little airzrak sacksvreće
64
170000
3000
03:08
to make the pollenpelud carrynositi even furtherunaprijediti.
65
173000
2000
kako bi pelud išao što dalje.
03:10
RememberSjećam se, that thing is just about 30 micrometersmikrometara acrosspreko.
66
175000
4000
Zapamtite, ta stvar je velika otprilike 30 mikrometara poprečno.
03:14
Now, it's much more efficientučinkovit if you can get insectsinsekata to do your biddingponude.
67
179000
3000
03:17
This is a bee'spčelinje legnoga
68
182000
3000
Ovo je noga pčele,
03:20
with the pollenpelud glommedprilijepili ontona it from a mallowsljez plantbiljka.
69
185000
4000
na koju se prihvatio sljezov pelud.
03:24
And this is the outrageouspretjeran and beautifullijep
70
189000
2000
I ovo je neobuzdani i prekrasni
03:26
flowercvijet of the mangrovemangrova palmdlan.
71
191000
2000
cvijet palme mangrova.
03:28
Very showyupadljiv, to attractprivući lots of insectsinsekata to do its biddingponude.
72
193000
3000
03:31
The pollenpelud has little barbskritike on it,
73
196000
2000
Pelud ima male bodlje na sebi,
03:33
if we look.
74
198000
2000
ako pogledamo.
03:35
Now, those little barbskritike
75
200000
2000
Sada, te male bodlje
03:37
obviouslyočito stickštap to the insectsinsekata well,
76
202000
3000
se očito dobro hvataju za insekte,
03:40
but there is something elsedrugo that we can tell from this photographfotografirati,
77
205000
2000
03:42
and that is that you mightmoć be ableu stanju to see a fractureprijelom linecrta
78
207000
2000
03:44
acrosspreko what would be the equatorekvatora of this, if it was the EarthZemlja.
79
209000
3000
03:47
That tellsgovori me that it's actuallyzapravo been fossilizedfosilizirani, this pollenpelud.
80
212000
3000
03:50
And I'm ratherradije proudponos to say
81
215000
2000
I s ponosom mogu reći
03:52
that this was foundpronađeno just nearblizu LondonLondon, and that 55 millionmilijuna yearsgodina agoprije
82
217000
3000
03:55
LondonLondon was fullpuni of mangrovesmangrova.
83
220000
3000
London bio pun palmi mangrova.
03:58
Isn't that coolsvjež?
84
223000
2000
Nije li to cool?
04:00
(LaughterSmijeh)
85
225000
3000
(Smijeh)
04:03
Okay, so this is anotherjoš speciesvrsta evolvedrazvio to be dispersedraspršeno by insectsinsekata.
86
228000
3000
04:06
You can tell that from the little barbskritike on there.
87
231000
3000
To možete vidjeti po malenim bodljama.
04:09
All these picturesSlike were takenpoduzete with a scanningskeniranje electronelektron microscopemikroskopom,
88
234000
3000
04:12
actuallyzapravo in the lablaboratorija at KewKew LaboratoriesLaboratorijima.
89
237000
2000
u laboratoriju tvrtke Kew Laboratoriji.
04:14
No coincidenceslučajnost that these were takenpoduzete
90
239000
2000
Nije slučajnost da je ove slike napravio
04:16
by RobRob KesselerKesseler, who is an artistumjetnik,
91
241000
2000
Rob Kessler, koji je umjetnik.
04:18
and I think it's someonenetko with a designdizajn and artisticumjetnički eyeoko
92
243000
3000
04:21
like him that has managedupravlja to bringdonijeti out the bestnajbolje in pollenpelud.
93
246000
4000
poput njegovog uspio izvući ono najbolje iz peludi.
04:25
(LaughterSmijeh)
94
250000
2000
(Smijeh)
04:27
Now, all this diversityraznovrsnost
95
252000
2000
Sada, sva ova raznolikost,
04:29
meanssredstva that you can look at a pollenpelud grainžitarica
96
254000
2000
04:31
and tell what speciesvrsta it camedošao from,
97
256000
3000
može reći od koje je vrste došao.
04:34
and that's actuallyzapravo quitedosta handylak za baratanje if you
98
259000
2000
To je dosta zgodno ako vi
04:36
maybe have a sampleuzorak and you want to see where it camedošao from.
99
261000
3000
slučajno imate uzorak i želite vidjeti odakle je došao.
04:39
So, differentdrugačiji speciesvrsta of plantsbilje
100
264000
2000
Različite vrste biljaka
04:41
growrasti in differentdrugačiji placesmjesta,
101
266000
2000
rastu na različitim mjestima.
04:43
and some pollenpelud carriesnosi furtherunaprijediti than othersdrugi.
102
268000
4000
I neki pelud leti dalje od ostalih.
04:47
So, if you have a pollenpelud sampleuzorak,
103
272000
3000
Ako imate uzorak peluda
04:50
then in principlenačelo, you should be ableu stanju to tell
104
275000
2000
onda biste, u principu, mogli utvrditi
04:52
where that sampleuzorak camedošao from.
105
277000
2000
odakle je taj uzorak došao.
04:54
And this is where it getsdobiva interestingzanimljiv for forensicsforenzika.
106
279000
3000
I ovdje stvar postaje zanimljiva za forenziku.
04:59
PollenPelud is tinysićušan. It getsdobiva on to things, and it sticksštapići to them.
107
284000
4000
05:03
So, not only does eachsvaki typetip of pollenpelud look differentdrugačiji,
108
288000
2000
05:05
but eachsvaki habitatstanište has a differentdrugačiji combinationkombinacija of plantsbilje.
109
290000
4000
nego i svako stanište ima drugačiju kombinaciju biljaka,
05:09
A differentdrugačiji pollenpelud signaturepotpis, if you like,
110
294000
2000
drugačiji peludni potpis, ako želite,
05:11
or a differentdrugačiji pollenpelud fingerprintotisak prsta.
111
296000
3000
ili drugačiji peludni otisak prsta.
05:16
By looking at the proportionsproporcije and combinationskombinacije
112
301000
2000
Gledajući te veličine i kombinacije
05:18
of differentdrugačiji kindsvrste of pollenpelud in a sampleuzorak,
113
303000
3000
različitih peludi u uzorku,
05:21
you can tell very preciselyprecizno where it camedošao from.
114
306000
3000
05:24
This is some pollenpelud embeddedugrađen in a cottonpamuk shirtkošulja,
115
309000
3000
05:27
similarsličan to the one that I'm wearingnošenje now.
116
312000
3000
poput majice koju nosim sada.
05:30
Now, much of the pollenpelud will still be there
117
315000
2000
Dosta peluda će biti ovdje
05:32
after repeatedponovljen washingspranja.
118
317000
2000
i nakon opetovanog pranja.
05:34
Where has it been?
119
319000
3000
Gdje je bio?
05:37
FourČetiri very differentdrugačiji habitatsstaništa mightmoć look similarsličan,
120
322000
2000
Ćetiri vrlo različita staništa mogu izgledati slično
05:39
but they'vešto ga do got very differentdrugačiji pollenpelud signaturesPotpisi.
