ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Van Jones - Social justice and green energy activist
Van Jones sees a clear link between social justice and green energy -- and works for both.

Why you should listen

Anthony "Van" Jones is founder of the Ella Baker Center for human rights, based in Oakland, California, and of Green for All, an NGO dedicated to "building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty." His work points to the connection between green energy and job creation. He's the author of The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems. In 2009, US President Obama appointed Jones his Special Advisor on Green Jobs; Jones resigned the position later that year.

Jones is a senior fellow at the Center For American Progress and a senior policy advisor at Green For All. He holds a joint appointment at Princeton as a distinguished visiting fellow in both the Center for African American Studies and in the Program in Science, Technology and Environmental Policy at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

and added添加 to global全球 warming变暖,

01:21
but there's a place地点 called "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同,"
27
66000
3000
01:24
and the reason原因 it's called "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同"
28
69000
2000
01:26
is because the petrochemical石化 industry行业
29
71000
3000
01:29
takes that oil and turns it into plastic塑料
30
74000
2000
01:31
and, in the process处理, kills杀死 people.
31
76000
3000
01:34
It shortens缩短 the lives生活 of the people who live生活 there in the Gulf海湾.
32
79000
3000
01:37
So oil and petrochemicals石油化学产品 are not just a problem问题 where there's a spill;
33
82000
3000
01:40
they're a problem问题 where there's not.
34
85000
2000
01:42
And what we don't often经常 appreciate欣赏
35
87000
2000
01:44
is the price价钱 that poor较差的 people pay工资
36
89000
2000
01:46
for us to have these disposable一次性 products制品.
37
91000
2000
01:48
The other thing that we don't often经常 appreciate欣赏
38
93000
2000
01:50
is it's not just at the point of production生产 that poor较差的 people suffer遭受.
39
95000
3000
01:53
Poor较差的 people also suffer遭受
40
98000
2000
01:55
at the point of use.
41
100000
2000
01:57
Those of us who earn a certain某些 income收入 level水平,
42
102000
2000
01:59
we have something called choice选择.
43
104000
2000
02:01
The reason原因 why you want to work hard and have a job工作
44
106000
2000
02:03
and not be poor较差的 and broke打破
45
108000
2000
02:05
is so you can have choices选择, economic经济 choices选择.
46
110000
3000
02:08
We actually其实 get a chance机会 to choose选择
47
113000
2000
02:10
not to use products制品
48
115000
2000
02:12
that have dangerous危险, poisonous有毒 plastic塑料 in them.
49
117000
2000
02:14
Other people who are poor较差的 don't have those choices选择.
50
119000
3000
02:17
So low-income低收入 people often经常 are the ones那些
51
122000
2000
02:19
who are buying购买 the products制品
52
124000
2000
02:21
that have those dangerous危险 chemicals化学制品 in them that their children孩子 are using运用.
53
126000
3000
02:24
Those are the people who wind up
54
129000
2000
02:28
of this poisonous有毒 plastic塑料 and using运用 it.
56
133000
3000
02:31
And people say, "Well, they should just buy购买 a different不同 product产品."
57
136000
3000
02:34
Well, the problem问题 with being存在 poor较差的 is you don't have those choices选择.
58
139000
3000
02:37
You often经常 have to buy购买 the cheapest最便宜 products制品.
59
142000
2000
02:39
The cheapest最便宜 products制品 are often经常 the most dangerous危险.
60
144000
3000
02:42
And if that weren't bad enough足够,
61
147000
2000
02:44
if it wasn't just the production生产 of plastic塑料
62
149000
2000
02:46
that's giving people cancer癌症 in places地方 like "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同" and shortening缩短 lives生活
63
151000
3000
02:49
and hurting伤害 poor较差的 kids孩子 at the point of use,
64
154000
3000
02:52
at the point of disposal处置,
65
157000
2000
02:54
once一旦 again, it's poor较差的 people
66
159000
2000
02:56
who bear the burden负担.
67
161000
2000
02:58
Often经常, we think we're doing a good thing.
68
163000
2000
03:00
You're in your office
69
165000
2000
03:02
and you're drinking your bottled瓶装 water, or whatever随你 it is,
70
167000
2000
03:04
and you think to yourself你自己, "Hey, I'm going to throw this away.
71
169000
3000
03:07
No, I'm going to be virtuous.
72
172000
2000
03:09
I'm going to put it in the blue蓝色 bin箱子."
73
174000
2000
03:11
You think, "I put mine in the blue蓝色 bin箱子,"
74
176000
2000
03:13
and then you look at your colleague同事 and say,
75
178000
3000
03:16
"Why, you cretin笨蛋.
76
181000
2000
“你知道吗,你是个傻冒,
03:18
You put yours你的 in the white白色 bin箱子."
77
183000
2000
03:20
And we use that as a moral道德 tickle痒痒.
78
185000
2000
03:22
We feel so good about ourselves
03:25
Maybe I'll feel good myself.
80
190000
2000
03:27
Not you, but I feel this way.
81
192000
3000
03:31
And so we kind of have this kind of moral道德 feel-good感觉不错 moment时刻.
82
196000
3000
03:34
But if we were to be able能够 to follow跟随 that little bottle瓶子
83
199000
3000
03:37
on its journey旅程,
84
202000
2000
03:39
we would be shocked吃惊 to discover发现 that, all too often经常,
85
204000
3000
03:42
that bottle瓶子 is going to be put on a boat,
86
207000
2000
03:44
it's going to go all the way across横过 the ocean海洋
87
209000
3000
03:47
at some expense费用,
88
212000
2000
03:49
and it's going to wind up in a developing发展 country国家 -- often经常 China中国.
89
214000
3000
03:52
I think in our minds头脑 we imagine想像 somebody's某人的 going to take the little bottle瓶子,
90
217000
3000
03:55
say, "Oh, little bottle瓶子.
91
220000
3000
03:58

04:05
He's given特定 a little bottle瓶子 massage按摩,

04:11
The little bottle瓶子 says, "I just don't know."
98

3000
04:14
But that's not actually其实 what happens发生.
99
239000
3000
04:19
That bottle

04:24
Recycling回收 of plastic塑料 in many许多 developing发展 countries国家

249000
3000
04:27
means手段 the incineration焚化 of the plastic塑料,
103
252000
2000
04:29
the burning燃烧 of the plastic塑料,
104
254000
2000
04:33
and, once一旦 again, kills杀死 people.
106
258000
2000
04:35
And so poor较差的 people

04:39
in petrochemical石化 centers中心 like "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同,"

2000
穷人大量地使用这些有毒产品;
04:44
and then poor较差的 people,
111
269000
2000
04:46
who even at the tail尾巴 end结束 of the recycling回收
112
271000

04:51
are all being存在 harmed伤害 greatly非常
114
276000
3000
04:54
by this addiction that we have
115
279000
3000
04:57
to disposability可处理.
116
282000
2000
04:59
Now you think to yourself你自己 -- because I know how you are --
117
284000
2000
05:01
you say, "That sure is terrible可怕

05:23
Because they're doing so much dirty production生产 in Asia亚洲 now,

have been wiped out by dirty air空气 coming未来 over from Asia亚洲.
134
320000
3000
05:39
So, we all are being存在 hit击中. We all are being存在 impacted影响.
135
324000
3000
05:42
It's just the poor较差的 people get hit击中 first and worst最差.
136
327000
3000
05:45
But the dirty production生产, the burning燃烧 of toxins毒素,
137

06:06
is the idea理念 of disposability可处理 itself本身.

06:14
to poison and pollute污染 the planet行星
148
359000
2000
06:16
and what we're doing to poor较差的 people,
149
361000
3000
06:19
you arrive到达 at a very troubling令人不安,
150
364000
2000
06:21
but also very helpful有帮助, insight眼光:
151
366000
3000
06:24
In order订购 to trash垃圾 the planet行星,
152
369000
2000
06:26
you have to trash垃圾 people.
153
371000
2000
06:28
But if you create创建 a world世界 where you don't trash垃圾 people,
154
373000
3000
06:31
you can't trash垃圾 the planet行星.
155
376000
2000
06:33
So now we are at a moment时刻
156
378000
2000
06:35
where the coming未来 together一起 of social社会 justice正义 as an idea理念
157
380000
3000

06:40
we finally最后 can now see
159
385000

06:42
that they are really, at the end结束 of the day, one idea理念.
160
387000
3000
06:45
And it's the idea理念 that we don't have disposable一次性 anything.
161
390000
3000
06:48
We don't have disposable一次性 resources资源.

06:51
We don't have disposable一次性 species种类.
163
396000
2000
06:53
And we don't have disposable一次性 people either.
164
398000
3000
06:56
We don't have a throwaway丢掉 planet行星,
165
401000
2000
06:58
and we don't have throwaway丢掉 children孩子 -- it's all precious珍贵.
166
403000
3000
07:01
And as we all begin开始 to come back to that basic基本 understanding理解,
167
406000
3000
07:04
new opportunities机会 for action行动 begin开始 to emerge出现.
168
409000
3000
07:07
Biomimicry

07:09
which哪一个 is something

07:11
that is an emerging新兴 science科学,

2000
07:13
winds up being存在 a very important重要 social社会 justice正义 idea理念.
172
418000
3000
07:16
People who are just learning学习 about this stuff东东,
173
421000
2000
07:20
respecting关于 the wisdom智慧 of all species种类.
175
425000
2000
07:22
Democracy民主, by the way,
176
427000
2000
07:24
means手段 respecting关于 the wisdom智慧 of all people -- and we'll get to that.
177
429000
2000
07:26
But biomimicry仿生学 means手段 respecting关于 the wisdom智慧 of all species种类.
178
431000
3000
07:29
It turns out we're a pretty漂亮 clever聪明 species种类.

This big cortex皮质, or whatever随你, we're pretty漂亮 proud骄傲 of ourselves我们自己.
180
437000
3000
07:35
But if we want to make something hard,
181
440000
3000
07:38
we come up, "I know, I'm going to make a hard substance物质.
182
443000
3000
07:41
I know, I'm going to get vacuums真空 and furnaces

07:49
but I got this hard thing.
186
454000
3000
07:52
I'm so clever
187
457000

07:54
and you look behind背后 you, and there's destruction毁坏 all around you.
188
459000
3000
07:57
But guess猜测 what? You're so clever聪明,
189
462000
2000
07:59
but you're not as clever聪明 as a clam.
190
464000
2000
08:01
A clamshell's翻盖的 hard.
191
466000
2000
08:03
There's no vacuums真空. There's no big furnaces.
192
468000
3000
08:06
There's no poison. There's no pollution污染.
193
471000
2000
08:08
It turns out that our other species种类
194
473000
2000
08:10
has figured想通 out a long time ago
195
475000
2000
08:12
how to create创建 many许多 of the things that we need
196
477000
3000
08:15
using运用 biological生物 processes流程 that nature性质 knows知道 how to use well.
197
480000
3000
08:18
Well that insight眼光 of biomimicry仿生学,
198
483000
2000
08:20
of our scientists科学家们 finally最后 realizing实现
199
485000
2000
08:22
that we have as much to learn学习 from other species种类.
200
487000
2000
08:24
I don't mean taking服用 a mouse老鼠
201
489000
2000
08:26
and sticking症结 it with stuff东东.
202
491000
2000
08:28
I don't mean looking at it from that way -- abusing滥用 the little species种类.
203
493000
3000
08:31
I mean actually其实 respecting关于 them, respecting关于 what they've他们已经 achieved实现.
204
496000
3000
08:34
That's called biomimicry
205
499000
2000
08:36
and that opens打开 the door
206
501000
2000
08:38
to zero waste浪费 production生产,
207
503000
2000

08:42
that we could actually其实 enjoy请享用

2000
08:46
without trashing捣毁 the planet行星.
211
511000
2000
08:48
Well that idea理念 of biomimicry仿生学,
212
513000
3000
08:51
respecting关于 the wisdom智慧 of all species种类,
213
516000
2000
08:53
combined结合 with the idea理念
214
518000
2000
08:55
of democracy民主 and social社会 justice正义,
215
520000
2000
08:57
respecting关于 the wisdom智慧 and the worth价值 of all people,
216
522000
3000
09:00
would give us a different不同 society社会.
217
525000
2000
09:02
We would have a different不同 economy经济.
218
527000
2000
09:04
We would have a green绿色 society社会
219
529000
2000
09:06
that Dr博士. King国王 would be proud骄傲 of.
220
531000
2000
09:08
That should be the goal目标.
221
533000
2000
09:10
And the way that we get there is to first of all recognize认识
222
535000
3000
09:13
that the idea理念 of disposability可处理
223
538000
3000
09:16
not only hurts伤害
224
541000
2000
09:18
the species种类 we've我们已经 talked about,
225
543000
2000
09:20
but it even corrupts腐败 our own拥有 society社会.
226
545000
3000
09:23
We're so proud骄傲 to live生活 here in California加州.
227
548000
3000
09:26
We just had this vote投票, and everybody's每个人的 like,
228
551000
2000
09:28
"Well, not in our state.
229
553000
3000
“那么,这投票不在我们州。
09:31
I don't know what those other states状态 were doing."
230
556000
3000
09:34
(Laughter
231
559000
2000
09:36
Just so proud
232
561000
2000
09:38
And, yeah, I'm proud骄傲, too.
233
563000
3000
09:41
But California加州,
234
566000
3000
09:44
though虽然 we lead the world世界 in some of the green绿色 stuff东东,
235
569000
3000
09:47
we also, unfortunately不幸, lead the world世界
236
572000
2000
09:49
in some of the gulag古拉格 stuff东东.
237

3000
09:55
of all the 50 states状态.
239
580000
2000
09:57
We have a moral道德 challenge挑战 in this moment时刻.
240
582000
3000
10:00
We are passionate多情 about rescuing营救
241
585000
3000
10:03
some dead materials物料 from the landfill垃圾填埋场,
242
588000
2000
10:05
but sometimes有时 not as passionate多情
243
590000
2000
10:07
about rescuing营救 living活的 beings众生, living活的 people.
244
592000
3000
10:10
And I would say that we live生活 in a country国家 --
245
595000
3000
10:13
five percent百分 of the world's世界 population人口,
246
598000
2000
10:15
25 percent百分 of the greenhouse温室 gases气体,
247
600000
3000
10:18
but also 25 percent百分 of the world's世界 prisoners囚犯.
248
603000
2000
10:20
One out of every一切 four people locked锁定 up anywhere随地 in the world世界
249
605000

10:23
is locked锁定 up right here in the United联合的 States状态.
250
608000
2000
10:25
So that is consistent一贯 with this idea理念
251
610000
3000
10:28
that disposability可处理 is something we believe in.
252
613000
3000
10:31
And yet然而,
253
616000
3000
还有,
10:34
as a movement运动
254
619000
2000
10:36
that has to broaden扩大 its constituency选民,
255
621000
2000
10:38
that has to grow增长,
256
623000
2000
10:40
that has to reach达到 out beyond our natural自然 comfort安慰 zone,
257
625000
3000
10:43
one of the challenges挑战 to the success成功 of this movement运动,

628000
3000
10:46
of getting得到 rid摆脱 of things like plastic塑料 and helping帮助 the economy经济 shift转移,
259
631000
3000
10:49
is people look at our movement运动 with some suspicion怀疑.
260
634000
3000
10:52
And they ask a question, and the question is:
261
637000
3000
10:55
How can these people be so passionate多情?
262
640000
3000
10:58
A poor较差的 person, a low-income低收入 person, somebody in "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同,"

11:06
might威力 say to themselves他们自己, and rightfully理所当然 so,
266
651000
2000
11:08
"How can these people be so passionate多情
267
653000
3000
“这些人怎么会如此有激情地
11:11
about making制造 sure
268
656000
2000
确信
11:13
that a plastic塑料 bottle瓶子
269

11:15

11:24
he doesn't get a second第二 chance机会?"
274
669000
2000
11:26
How can this movement运动 be so passionate多情
275
671000
2000
11:28
about saying we don't have throwaway丢掉 stuff东东, no throwaway丢掉 dead materials物料,
276
673000
3000
11:31
and yet然而 accept接受
277
676000
2000
11:33
throwaway丢掉 lives生活 and throwaway丢掉 communities社区 like "Cancer癌症 Alley胡同?"
278
678000
3000
11:36
And so we now get a chance机会
279
681000
3000
11:39
to be truly proud骄傲 of this movement运动.
280
684000

11:44
it gives us that extra额外 call

11:46
to reach达到 out to other movements运动
