ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robin Chase - Transport networker
With Zipcar, Robin Chase introduced car-crazy America to the concept of non-ownership. Now she's flipping that model with Buzzcar, which lets you rent your own auto to your neighbors.

Why you should listen

If she weren't a proven entrepreneur, you might imagine Robin Chase as a transportation geek, a dedicated civil servant, endlessly refining computer models of freeway traffic. If she weren't such a green-conscious problem-solver, you might take her for a startup whiz. Case in point: In 2000, Chase focused her MIT business training on a car-sharing scheme imported from Europe and co-founded Zipcar, now the largest car-sharing business in the world. Using a wireless key, location awareness and Internet billing, members pick up Zipcars at myriad locations anytime they want one.

Now Chase has launched Buzzcar, a car-sharing service in France with a twist: instead of a fleet of green Zipcars, the service lets users share their own cars and make money off their unused capacity. Call it peer-to-peer auto rental.

Read this insightful interview with Chase about starting a business and raising kids (including a supermodel).

03:09
So we have the peers同行 that are providing提供 the services服务 and the product产品,
54

3416
03:12
and the company公司 that's doing the stuff东东 that companies公司 do.
55

04:54
are thinking思维, "Oh my God, I want to build建立 one of those.
85
278382
2416
04:56
I see this incredible难以置信 speed速度 and scale规模.
86
280798
1677
04:58
You mean all I have to do is build建立 a platform平台 and all these people are going
87
282475
2509
05:00
to put their stuff东东 on top最佳 and I sit back and roll it in?"
88
284984
2768
05:03
Building建造 these platforms平台 for participation参与 are so nontrivial平凡 to do.
89
287752
5051
05:08
I think of the difference区别 of Google谷歌 Video视频 versus YouTubeYouTube的.
90
292803
4013
05:12
Who would have thought that two young年轻 guys and a start-up启动

05:15
would beat击败 out Google谷歌 Video视频? Why?
92
300005
2183
05:18
I actually其实 have no idea理念 why. I didn't talk to them.
93
302188
2092
05:20
But I'm thinking思维, you know, they probably大概 had
94
304280
2632
05:22
the "share分享" button按键 a little bit brighter光明 and to the right,
95
306912
1979
05:24
and so it was easier更轻松 and more convenient方便 for the two sides双方
96
308891
2994
05:27
that are always participating参与 on these networks网络.
97
311885
3080
05:30
So I actually其实 know a lot about building建造 a peer窥视 platform平台 now,
98
314965
4199
05:35
and a Peers同行, Inc公司. company公司, because I've spent花费
99
319164
1861
05:36
the last two years年份 doing that in Paris巴黎.
100
321025
3399
05:40
So let me take you back how it's so incredibly令人难以置信 different不同
101
324424
3421
05:43
building建造 BuzzcarBuzzcar than it was building建造 ZipcarZipcar公司,
102
327845
2875
05:46
because now every一切 single thing we do has these two
103
330720
2280
05:48
different不同 bodies身体 that I have to be thinking思维 about:
104
333000
2427
05:51
the owners拥有者 who are going to provide提供 the cars汽车
105
335427
2864
05:54
and the drivers司机 who are going to rent出租 them.
106
338291
2447
I have to think about what is right for both sides双方.
107
340738
3472
06:00
There are many许多, many许多 examples例子 and I'll give you one
108
344210
2464
06:02
that is not my favorite喜爱 example: insurance保险.
109
346674
3322
06:05
It took me a year and a half to get the insurance保险 just right.
110
349996
4529
06:10
Hours小时 and hours小时 of sitting坐在 with insurers保险公司 and many许多 companies公司
111
354525
2989
06:13
and their thoughts思念 about risk风险 and how this is totally完全 innovative创新,
112
357514
3746
06:17
they'd他们会 never thought of it before.
113
361260
1831
06:18
Way too much money, I just can't even go there, with lawyers律师,
114
363091
3367
06:22
trying to figure数字 out how this is different不同, who's谁是 responsible主管 to whom,
115
366458
2784
06:25
and the result结果 was that we were able能够 to provide提供 owners拥有者
116
369242
3588
06:28
protection保护 for their own拥有 driving主动 records记录 and their own拥有 history历史.
117
372830
4292
06:33
The cars汽车 are completely全然 insured投保 during the rental出租,
118
377122
1816
06:34
and it gives drivers司机 what they need, and what do they need?
119
378938
3664
06:38
They need a low deductible
120
382602
2505
06:43
So this was a trick to get these two sides双方.
122
387355
2884
06:46
So now I want to take you to the moment时刻 of --
123
390239
4248
06:50
When you're an entrepreneur企业家, and you've started开始 a new company公司,
124
394487
3968
06:54
there's the, here's这里的 all the stuff东东 we do beforehand预先,
125
398455
2394
06:56
and then the service服务 launches发布会. What happens发生?
126
400849
3926
07:00
So all those months个月 of work, they come into play.
127
404775
4400
07:05
Last June六月 1, we launched推出. It was an exciting扣人心弦 moment时刻.

07:44
Industrial产业 production生产, the whole整个 point of industrial产业 production生产
139
448697
3112

07:51
that is consistent一贯 every一切 single time,
141
455283

08:00
that works作品 fabulously惊人.
145
464607
1584
08:02
But what does peer窥视 production生产 do?
08:05
is this completely全然 different不同 way of doing things,
147
469333
3293
08:08
and you have a big quality质量 range范围, and so eBay易趣, cleverly巧妙,
148
472626
5072
08:13
the first peer窥视 production生产, Peer窥视, Inc公司. company公司, I'd say,
149
477698
3321
08:16
they figured想通 out early on, we need to have ratings评级
150
481019
4598
08:21
and commentaries评论 and all that yucky令人讨厌 side stuff东东.
151
485617
3384
08:24
We can flag that and we can put it to the side, and people
152

08:32
So going back, this is my look of excitement激动 and joy喜悦,
154

08:37
because all this stuff东东 that I'd also been hoping希望 for
155
501622
2434
08:39
actually其实 really did happen发生, and what's that?
156
504056
2027
08:41
That is the diversity多样 of what's going on.
157
506083
2813
08:44
You have these different不同 fabulous极好 owners拥有者

09:11
And after a year, we have 1,000 cars汽车
165
535852

09:20
This would not be possible可能 to do that in economic经济 fashion时尚
168
544240
4169
09:24
for a traditional传统 company公司.
169
548409
2361
09:26
Back to this spectrum
170
550770
2142
09:28
So what's happening事件 is, we had the yuck side,
171
552912
2716
09:31
but we actually其实 had this real真实 wow side.
172
555628
2224
09:33
And I can tell you two great stories故事.
173
557852
2740
09:36
A driver司机 was telling告诉 me that they went to rent出租 a car汽车
174
560592
2967
09:39
to go up the coast of France法国 and the owner所有者 gave it to them,
175
563559
3735
09:43
and said, "You know what, here's这里的 where the cliffs悬崖 are,
176
567294
1992
09:45
and here's这里的 all the beaches海滩, and this is my best最好 beach海滩,
177
569286
2520
09:47
and this is where the best最好 fish restaurant餐厅 is."
178
571806
2800
09:50
And the peers同行 also become成为,
179
574606
2836
09:55
and so at the last minute分钟 people can --
181
579703
2271
09:57
a driver司机 can say, "Hey, you know what, I really need the car汽车,
182
581974
2657
10:00
is it available可得到?" And that person will say,
183
584631
1490
10:02
"Sure, my wife's妻子 at home. Go pick up the keys按键. Go do it."
184
586121
3111
10:05
So you can have these really nice不错 things that can't happen发生,
185
589232
3399
10:08
and it's a kind of "Wow!" and I want to say "Wow!"
186
592631
3832
10:12
type类型 of thing that's happening事件 here, because individuals个人,
187
596463
2480
10:14
if you're a company公司, what happens发生 is you might威力 have
188
598943
2871
10:17
10 people who are in charge收费 of innovation革新,
189
601814
1750
10:19
or 100 people who are in charge收费 of innovation革新.
190
603564
1958
10:21
What happens发生 in Peer窥视, Inc公司. companies公司 is that you have
191
605522
3504
10:24
tens and hundreds数以百计 and thousands数千 and even millions百万
192
609026
3072
10:27
of people who are creating创建 experiments实验 on this model模型,
193
612098
3103
10:31
and so out of all that influence影响 and that effort功夫,
194
615201
2585
10:33
you are having this exceptional优秀 amount of innovation革新
195
617786
4391
10:38
that is coming未来 out.
196
622177
2419
10:40
So one of the reasons原因, if we come back to why did I
197
624596
3368
10:43
call it BuzzcarBuzzcar? I wanted to remind提醒 all of us
198
627964
2841
10:46
about the power功率 of the hive蜂巢,
199
630805
2876
10:49
and its incredible难以置信 facility设施 to create创建 this platform平台
200
633681
2936
10:52
that individuals个人 want to participate参加 and innovate创新 on.
201
636617
4021
10:56
And for me, when I think about our future未来,
202
640638
3420
10:59
and all of those problems问题 that seem似乎 incredibly令人难以置信 large,
203
644058
3328
11:03
the scale规模 is impossible不可能, the urgency is there,
204
647386
3086
11:06
Peers同行, Inc公司. provides提供 the speed速度 and scale规模
205
650472
3034
11:09
and the innovation革新 and the creativity创造力 that is going to answer回答 these problems问题.
206
653506
4586
11:13
All we have to do is create创建 a fabulous极好 platform平台 for participation参与 -- nontrivial平凡.
207
658092
5317
11:19
So I continue继续 to think that
208
663409
2777
11:22
transportation运输 is the center中央 of the hard universe宇宙.
209
666186
3255
11:25
All problems问题 come back to transportation运输 for me.
210
669441
2324
11:27
But there are all these other areas that are these profound
211
671765
3847
11:31
big problems问题 that I know that we can work on,
212
675612
3365
11:34
and people are working加工 on them in many许多 different不同 sectors行业,
213
678977
2776
11:37
but there's this really fabulous极好 group of things
214
681753
2545
11:40
with the power功率 of this Peers同行, Inc公司. model模型.
215
684298
4486
11:44
So over the last decade, we've我们已经 been reveling陶醉 in
216
688784
6485
11:51
the power功率 of the Internet互联网 and how it's empowered授权 individuals个人,
217
695269
3503
11:54
and for me, what Peers同行, Inc公司. does
218
698772
2596
11:57
is it takes it up a notch缺口. We're now bringing使 the power功率
219
701368
3836
12:01
of the company公司 and the corporation公司
220
705204
2996
12:04
and supercharging增压 individuals个人.
221
708200

12:06
So for me, it's a collaboration合作.
222
711065
3545
12:10
Together一起, we can. (Applause掌声)
