ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marjan van Aubel - Solar designer
Marjan van Aubel promotes extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design.

Why you should listen

Marjan van Aubel is an award-winning solar designer whose innovative practice spans the fields of sustainability, design and technology. In collaboration with scientists, engineers and institutions -- such as Swarovski and ECN.TNO, the Dutch Energy Centre -- van Aubel works to promote extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design. From working with expandable materials to domestically integrating solar cells that mimic the process of photosynthesis in plants, she adds a double function to objects and puts them to work: a table is not just a table, but also a producer of electricity.

Van Aubel strives to redefine our current relationship with solar technology and accelerate its transition to ubiquity. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and the Rietveld Academy DesignLAB in 2009, she has since exhibited at world-class institutions, including the V&A (London), the Design Museum (London) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). Her work is also part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York, the Vitra Design Museum, Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, The Montreal Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

00:50
I work in the triangle三角形 of design设计,

01:11
And, I mean, it all went quite相当 well,
17

01:14
but it always felt
that something was missing失踪.
18
62875
2583
01:18
And it was, until直到 I read the book
called the "Solar太阳能 Revolution革命,"
19
66583
4268
01:22
where it says that within one hour小时
we receive接收 enough足够 sunlight阳光
20
70875
4518
01:27
to provide提供 the world世界

01:32
One hour小时.
23
80167
1892
01:34
And since以来 then, I realized实现
I just want to focus焦点 on solar太阳能.
24
82083
4268
01:38
Scientists科学家们 all over the world世界
25
86375

01:39
have been focusing调焦 on making制造
solar太阳能 panels面板 more efficient高效 and cheaper便宜.
26
87875
4726
01:44
So the price价钱 of solar太阳能
has dropped下降 enormously巨大.
27
92625
2851
01:47
And this is because China中国
started开始 producing生产 them on a large scale规模.
28
95500
4667
01:53
And also their efficiency效率
has increased增加 a lot.
29
101667
2351
01:56
They now even have an efficiency效率
of 44.5 percent百分.
30
104042
3833
02:01
But if you think
about the image图片 of solar太阳能 cells细胞,
31
109292
3267
02:04
it's kind of stayed the same相同
for the last 60 years年份.
32
112583
3375
02:09
It's still this technology技术
just stacked堆叠 onto something.
33
117333
3209
02:13
And solar太阳能 cells细胞 need to be much better
integrated集成 into our environment环境.
34
121708
3792
02:19
Climate气候 change更改 is the biggest最大
problem问题 of our time.
35
127292
3476
02:22
And we can't rely依靠 on the others其他 --
the government政府, the engineers工程师 --
36
130792
3184
02:26
to make positive changes变化.
37
134000
1351
02:27
We all can contribute有助于 towards change更改.
38
135375
2500
02:31
Like I said, I'm a designer设计师
39
139000
1518
02:32
and I would like to change更改
things through通过 design设计.
40
140542
2500
02:36
Let me give you some examples例子 of my work.
41
144458
2726
02:39
I'm collaborating合作 with Swarovski施华洛世奇,
the crystal水晶 company公司.
42
147208
3435
02:42
And if you cut crystals晶体 in a certain某些 way,
43
150667
2351
02:45
you are able能够 to bend弯曲 and direct直接 the light
onto a certain某些 place地点.
44
153042
4226
02:49
So I use these crystals晶体
to focus焦点 the light onto a solar太阳能 panel面板,
45
157292
3976
02:53
making制造 them more efficient高效,
but using运用 aesthetics美学.
46
161292
2791
02:57
So you take the solar太阳能 crystal水晶
with you in the light,
47
165125
2476
02:59
there's a battery电池 in the solar太阳能 cell细胞,
48
167625
2101
03:01
you put it in a docking对接 station
49
169750
1726
03:03
and you are able能够 to power功率
these chandeliers吊灯.
50
171500
2393
03:05
So you're literally
bringing使 the light indoors在室内.
51
173917
2416
03:10
I got completely全然 hooked迷上 on solar太阳能
when I came来了 across横过 this technology技术
52
178500
3518
03:18
and they are based基于
on photosynthesis光合作用 in plants植物.
55
186583
3125
03:22
Where the green绿色 chlorophyl叶绿素
converts转换 light into sugar for plants植物,
56
190667
3392
03:26
these cells细胞 convert兑换 light
into electricity电力.
57
194083
2584
03:31
The best最好 thing is, they even work indoors在室内.
58
199042
2791
03:34
So different不同 colors颜色
have different不同 efficiency效率,
59
202792
2184
03:37
depending根据 on their place地点
on the color颜色 spectrum光谱.
60
205000
2191
03:39
So, for example,
red is more efficient高效 than blue蓝色.
61
207215
3917
03:44
So if I hear this as a designer
62
212708
1976
03:46
a colored有色 surface表面,
a glass玻璃 colored有色 surface表面,
63
214708
3018
03:49
color颜色 that's mostly大多
just used for esthetics美学,
64
217750
2684
03:52
now gets得到 an extra额外 function功能
and is able能够 to harvest收成 electricity电力,
65
220458
4393
03:56
I think, where can we apply应用 this, then?
66
224875
3184
04:00
This is Current当前 Table,
67
228083
1768
04:01
where the whole整个 tabletop桌上
consists of these colored有色 solar太阳能 cells细胞.
68
229875
3750
04:06
There are batteries电池 in the legs
69
234667
1684
04:08
where you can charge收费 your phone电话
through通过 USBUSB ports港口.
70
236375
2958
04:13
And in my work,
it's always very important重要,
71
241000
2059
04:15
the balance平衡 between之间
efficiency效率 and aesthetics美学.
72
243083
2310
04:17
So that's why the table is orange
73
245417
1620
04:19
because it is a very stable稳定
04:24
And this is always
the most asked question I get:
75
252042
2351
04:26
"OK, great, but how many许多 phones手机
can I charge收费 from this, then?"
76
254417
2916
“我能同时给几部手机充电呢?”
04:30
And before I go to this
complicated复杂 answer回答 of like,
77
258500
2434
04:32
"Well, where is the table,
does it have enough足够 light,
78
260958
2518
“这得看桌子摆在哪,是否光照充足,
04:35
is it next下一个 to a window窗口?"
79
263500
1559
04:37
The table now has sensors传感器
that read the light intensity强度 of the room房间.
80
265083
3893
04:41
So through通过 an app应用 we developed发达
81
269000
1934
04:42
you can literally按照字面 follow跟随
how much light it's getting得到,
82
270958
2518
04:45
and how full充分 the battery电池 is.
83
273500
1750
04:48
I'm actually其实 proud骄傲,
because yesterday昨天 we installed安装 a table
84
276750
3476
04:52
at Stichting施蒂希廷 Doen's多恩的 offices办事处 in Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹
85
280250
2684
04:54
and, right at this moment时刻,
86
282958
1268
04:56
our Queen女王 Maxima极大 is charging充电
a phone电话 from this table.
87
284250
3768
05:00
It's cool.
88
288042
1309
05:01
(Applause
89
289375
4893
05:06
So the more surface表面 you have,
the more energy能源 you can harvest收成.
90
294292
4184
05:10
These are Current当前 Windows视窗,
91
298500
1601
05:12
where we replaced更换 all windows视窗
in a gallery画廊 in London伦敦, in Soho苏荷,
92
300125
4851
05:17
with this modern现代 version of stained染色 glass玻璃.
93
305000
3101
05:20
So people from the street
could come and charge收费 their phones手机
94
308125
2976
05:23
through通过 the window窗口 ledges窗台.
95
311125
1333
05:25
So I'm giving extra额外 functions功能 to objects对象.
96
313833
2226
05:28
A window窗口 doesn't have to be
just a window窗口 anymore.
97
316083
2518
05:30
It can also function功能
as a little power功率 station.
98
318625
3000
05:35
So, here I am, talking
about how much I love solar太阳能,
99
323583
4726
05:40
but I don't have solar太阳能 panels面板 on my roof屋顶.
100
328333
2935
05:43
I live生活 in the center中央 of Amsterdam阿姆斯特丹,
101
331292
1726
05:45
I don't own拥有 the house and it's a monument纪念碑,
102
333042
2017
05:47
so it's not possible可能 and not allowed允许.
103
335083
2209
05:50
So how can you make solar太阳能 cells细胞
more accessible无障碍 and for everyone大家,
104
338542
4142
05:54
and not only for the people
that can afford给予 a sustainable可持续发展 lifestyle生活方式?
105
342708
3375
05:59
We now have the opportunity机会
106
347708
1476
06:01
to integrate整合 solar太阳能 on the place地点
where we directly need it.
107
349208
3268
06:04
And there are so many许多
amazing惊人 technologies技术 out there.
108
352500
3434
06:07
If I look around now,
I see every一切 surface表面 as an opportunity机会.
109

06:13
For example, I was driving

06:19
There I saw all this glass玻璃 and thought,
112
367458

06:22
what if we integrate整合 those

113
370042

06:25
What if we integrate整合 traditional传统 farming农业
114
373750
