ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jarreth Merz - Filmmaker
Jarreth Merz' new film, "An African Election," follows the 2008 presidential elections in Ghana from start to finish.

Why you should listen

Raised in Ghana, Switzerland and Germany, Jarreth Merz is a filmmaker and actor (you may remember him  in the role of Simon of Cyrene in The Passion of the Christ). As a director, his work is rooted in observing life as it presents itself in all its complexities -- as shown in his latest documentary, An African Election, which follows the 2008 presidential elections in Ghana, West Africa.

Merz's stepfather, a political player on Ghana, helped him get access behind the scenes; then Jarreth and his cameraman brother Kevin followed the presidential candidates in the unpredictable months leading up to the final night. In chronicling the rough-and-tumble process of a democratic election, the documentary becomes a meditation on the dream of democracy itself. The film screened in the World Documentary competition at Sundance earlier this year. Merz is now working on a “political safari” in Africa.

He says: "An African Election challenges the preconceived notion we have about politics in Ghana or Africa without hiding the brutal realities."

44
120000
3000
02:18
And there, I started開始 by searching搜索
45
123000
3000
02:21
for the footprints腳印 in my childhood童年.
46
126000
2000
02:23
And before I even knew知道 it,
47
128000
2000
02:25
I was suddenly突然 on a stage階段
48
130000
2000

02:31
And I realized實現 that, when I'd left the country國家,
51
136000
3000
02:34
free自由 and fair公平 elections選舉 in a democratic民主的 environment環境
52
139000
3000
02:37
were a dream夢想.
53
142000
2000
02:39
And now that I'd returned, that dream夢想 had become成為 reality現實,
54
144000
3000
02:42
though雖然 a fragile脆弱 reality現實.
55
147000
2000
02:44
And I was thinking思維,
56
149000
2000
02:46
was Ghana加納 searching搜索 for its identity身分
57
151000
2000
02:48
like I was looking for my identity身分?
58
153000
2000
02:50
Was what was happening事件 in Ghana加納 a metaphor隱喻
59
155000
2000
02:52
for what was happening事件 in me?
60
157000
3000
02:56
And it was as if through通過 the standards標準 of my Western西 life,
61
161000
6000
03:02
I hadn't有沒有 lived生活 up to my full充分 potential潛在.
62
167000
3000
03:05
I mean, nor也不 had Ghana加納,
63
170000
2000
03:07
even though雖然 we had been trying very hard.
64
172000
2000
03:09
Now in 1957,
65
174000
2000
03:11
Ghana加納 was the first sub-Saharan撒哈拉以南 country國家
66
176000
2000
03:13
to gain獲得 its independence獨立.
67
178000
2000
03:15
In the late晚了 50s,
68
180000
2000
03:17
Ghana加納 and Singapore新加坡 had the same相同 GDPGDP.
69
182000
3000
03:20
I mean, today今天, Singapore新加坡 is a First World世界 country國家
70
185000
3000
03:23
and Ghana加納 is not.
71
188000
3000
03:26
But maybe it was time to prove證明 to myself,
72
191000
3000
03:29
yes, it's important重要 to understand理解 the past過去,
73
194000
2000
03:31
it is important重要 to look at it in a different不同 light,
74
196000
4000
03:35
but maybe we should look at the strengths優勢 in our own擁有 culture文化
75
200000
4000
03:39
and build建立 on those foundations基金會 in the present當下.
76
204000
4000
03:43
So here I was, December十二月 7th, 2008.
77
208000
5000
03:48
The polling輪詢 stations opened打開 to the voters選民 at 7:00 AM,
78
213000
5000
03:53
but voters選民, eager急於 to take their own擁有 political政治 fate命運 into their hands,
79
218000
4000
03:57
were starting開始 to line up at 4:00 AM in the morning早上.
80
222000
3000
04:00
And they had traveled旅行 from near, they had traveled旅行 from far,
81
225000
3000
04:03
because they wanted to make their voices聲音 heard聽說.
82
228000
2000
04:05
And I asked one of the voters選民, I said, "Whom are you going to vote投票 for?"
83
230000
3000
04:08
And he said, "I'm sorry, I can't tell you."
84
233000
3000
04:11
He said that his vote投票 was in his heart.
85
236000
3000
04:14
And I understood了解, this was their election選舉,
86
239000
3000
04:17
and they weren't going to let anyone任何人
87
242000
2000
04:19
take it away from them.
88
244000
2000
04:21
Now the first round回合 of the voting表決 didn't bring帶來 forth向前 a clear明確 winner優勝者 --
89
246000
3000
04:24
so nobody沒有人 had achieved實現 the absolute絕對 majority多數 --
90
249000
4000
04:28
so voting表決 went into a second第二 round回合 three weeks later後來.
91
253000
3000
04:31
The candidates候選人 were back on the road; they were campaigning競選.
92
256000
3000
04:34
The rhetoric修辭 of the candidates候選人, of course課程, changed.
93
259000
2000
04:36
The heat was on.
94
261000
2000
04:38
And then the cliche陳詞濫調 came來了 to haunt出沒 us.
95
263000
5000
04:43
There were claims索賠 of intimidation恐嚇
96
268000
2000

04:47
of ballot選票 boxes盒子 being存在 stolen被盜.
98
272000
4000
04:54
and the mob暴民 was starting開始 to get out of control控制.
100
279000
3000
04:57
We witnessed目擊 the eruption噴發 of violence暴力 in the streets街道.
101
282000
4000
05:01
People were being存在 beaten毆打 brutally粗暴地.
102
286000
3000
05:04
The army軍隊 started開始 firing射擊 their guns槍砲. People were scrambling擾碼.
103
289000
3000
05:07
It was complete完成 chaos混沌.
104
292000
2000
05:09
And my heart sank
105
294000
2000
05:11
because I thought, here we are again.
106
296000
2000
05:13
Here is another另一個 proof證明
107
298000
2000
05:15
that the African非洲人 is not capable of governing治理 himself他自己.
108
300000
3000
05:18
And not only that, I am documenting文檔化 it --
109
303000
3000
05:21
documenting文檔化 my own擁有 cultural文化 shortcomings缺點.
110
306000
4000
05:25
So when the echo迴聲 of the gunshots槍聲
111
310000
3000
05:30
it was soon不久 drowned淹死的 by the chanting誦經 of the mob暴民,
113
315000
2000
05:32
and I didn't believe what I was hearing聽力.
114
317000
2000
05:34
They were chanting誦經, "We want peace和平.
115
319000
2000
05:36
We want peace和平."
116
321000
3000
05:39
And I realized實現 it had to come from the people.
117
324000
3000
05:42
After all, they decide決定,
118
327000
2000
05:44
and they did.
119
329000
2000
05:46
So the sounds聲音 that were before distorted扭曲 and loud,
120
331000
4000
05:50
were suddenly突然 a melody旋律.
121
335000
3000
05:53
The sounds聲音 of the voices聲音 were harmonious和諧.
122
338000
3000
05:56
So it could happen發生.
123
341000
3000
05:59
A democracy民主 could be upheld堅持 peacefully安然.
124
344000
3000
06:02
It could be, by the will of the masses群眾
125
347000
3000
06:05
who were now urgently迫切 pressing緊迫
126
350000
2000
06:07
with all their heart and all their will
127
352000
2000
06:09
for peace和平.
128
354000
2000
06:11
Now here's這裡的 an interesting有趣 comparison對照.
129
356000
3000
06:14
We in the West西,
130
359000
2000
06:16
we preach傳道 the values,
131
361000
2000
06:18
the golden金色 light of democracy民主,
132
363000
3000
06:21
that we are the shining閃亮的 example of how it's doneDONE.
133
366000
3000
06:24
But when it comes down to it,
134
369000
3000
06:27
Ghana加納 found發現 itself本身 in the same相同 place地點
135
372000
4000
06:31
in which哪一個 the U.S. election選舉 stalled停滯
136
376000
2000

06:38
But instead代替 of the unwillingness不願意 of the candidates候選人
139
383000
3000
06:41
to allow允許 the system系統 to proceed繼續 and the people to decide決定,
140
386000
3000

06:49
It didn't leave離開 it up to the Supreme最高 Court法庭 to decide決定;
143

它並沒有讓最高法院決定;
06:52
the people did.

06:58
did not bring帶來 forth向前 a clear明確 winner優勝者 either.
