ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Rebecca Saxe - Cognitive neuroscientist
Rebecca Saxe studies how we think about other people's thoughts. At the Saxelab at MIT, she uses fMRI to identify what happens in our brains when we consider the motives, passions and beliefs of others.

Why you should listen

While still a graduate student, Rebecca Saxe made a breakthrough discovery: There's a specific region in our brain that becomes active when we contemplate the workings of other minds. Now, at MIT's Saxelab, she and her team have been further exploring her grad-school finding, exploring how it may help us understand conditions such as autism.

As Saxe delves into the complexities of social cognition, this young scientist is working toward revealing the enigma of human minds interacting.

Today今天 I'm going to talk to you about the problem問題 of other minds頭腦.
0
0
3000
00:15
And the problem問題 I'm going to talk about
1
3000
2000
00:17
is not the familiar one from philosophy哲學,
2
5000
3000
00:20
which哪一個 is, "How can we know
3
8000
2000
00:22
whether是否 other people have minds頭腦?"
4
10000
2000
00:24
That is, maybe you have a mind心神,
5
12000
2000
00:26
and everyone大家 else其他 is just a really convincing使人信服 robot機器人.
6
14000
3000
00:29
So that's a problem問題 in philosophy哲學,
7
17000
2000
00:31
but for today's今天的 purposes目的 I'm going to assume承擔
8
19000
2000
00:33
that many許多 people in this audience聽眾 have a mind心神,
9
21000
2000
00:35
and that I don't have to worry擔心 about this.
10
23000
2000
00:37
There is a second第二 problem問題 that is maybe even more familiar to us
11
25000
3000
00:40
as parents父母 and teachers教師 and spouses配偶
12
28000
3000
00:43
and novelists小說家,
13
31000
2000
00:45
which哪一個 is, "Why is it so hard
14
33000
2000
00:47
to know what somebody else其他 wants or believes相信?"
15
35000
2000
00:49
Or perhaps也許, more relevantly貼切,
16
37000
2000
00:51
"Why is it so hard to change更改 what somebody else其他 wants or believes相信?"
17
39000
3000
"為什麼我們很難改變別人要的或想的?"
00:54
I think novelists小說家 put this best最好.
18
42000
2000
00:56
Like Philip菲利普 Roth羅斯, who said,
19
44000
2000
00:58
"And yet然而, what are we to do about this terribly可怕 significant重大 business商業
20
46000
3000
"而我們要如何處理「他人」
01:01
of other people?
21
49000
2000
01:03
So ill生病 equipped裝備 are we all,
22
51000
2000
01:05
to envision預見 one another's他人的 interior室內 workings運作
23
53000
2000
01:07
and invisible無形 aims目標."
24
55000
2000
01:09
So as a teacher老師 and as a spouse伴侶,
25
57000
3000
01:12
this is, of course課程, a problem問題 I confront面對 every一切 day.
26
60000
2000
01:14
But as a scientist科學家, I'm interested有興趣 in a different不同 problem問題 of other minds頭腦,
27
62000
3000
01:17
and that is the one I'm going to introduce介紹 to you today今天.
28
65000
3000
01:20
And that problem問題 is, "How is it so easy簡單
29
68000
2000
01:22
to know other minds頭腦?"
30
70000
2000
01:24
So to start開始 with an illustration插圖,
31
72000
2000
01:26
you need almost幾乎 no information信息,
32
74000
2000
01:28
one snapshot快照 of a stranger陌生人,
33
76000
2000
01:30
to guess猜測 what this woman女人 is thinking思維,
34
78000
2000
01:32
or what this man is.
35
80000
3000
01:35
And put another另一個 way, the crux癥結 of the problem問題 is
36
83000
2000
01:37
the machine that we use for thinking思維 about other minds頭腦,
37
85000
3000
01:40
our brain, is made製作 up of pieces, brain cells細胞,
38
88000
3000
01:43
that we share分享 with all other animals動物, with monkeys猴子
39
91000
2000
01:45
and mice老鼠 and even sea slugs蛞蝓.
40
93000
3000
01:48
And yet然而, you put them together一起 in a particular特定 network網絡,
41
96000
3000
01:51
and what you get is the capacity容量 to write Romeo羅密歐 and Juliet朱麗葉.
42
99000
3000
01:54
Or to say, as Alan艾倫 Greenspan格林斯潘 did,
43
102000
2000
01:56
"I know you think you understand理解 what you thought I said,
44
104000
3000
"我知道你以為你明白你認為我所說的
01:59
but I'm not sure you realize實現 that what you heard聽說
45
107000
2000
02:01
is not what I meant意味著."
46
109000
2000
02:03
(Laughter
47
111000
3000
02:06
So, the job工作 of my field領域 of cognitive認知 neuroscience神經科學
48
114000
2000
02:08
is to stand with these ideas思路,
49
116000
2000
02:10
one in each hand.
50
118000
2000
02:12
And to try to understand理解 how you can put together一起
51
120000
3000
02:15
simple簡單 units單位, simple簡單 messages消息 over space空間 and time, in a network網絡,
52
123000
4000
02:19
and get this amazing驚人 human人的 capacity容量 to think about minds頭腦.
53
127000
4000
02:23
So I'm going to tell you three things about this today今天.
54
131000
3000
02:26
Obviously明顯 the whole整個 project項目 here is huge巨大.
55
134000
3000
02:29
And I'm going to tell you just our first few少數 steps腳步
56
137000
3000
02:32
about the discovery發現 of a special特別 brain region地區
57
140000
2000
02:34
for thinking思維 about other people's人們 thoughts思念.
58
142000
2000
02:36
Some observations意見 on the slow development發展 of this system系統
59
144000
2000
02:38
as we learn學習 how to do this difficult job工作.
60
146000
4000
02:42
And then finally最後, to show顯示 that some of the differences分歧
61
150000
2000
02:44
between之間 people, in how we judge法官 others其他,
62
152000
3000
02:47
can be explained解釋 by differences分歧 in this brain system系統.
63
155000
4000
02:51
So first, the first thing I want to tell you is that
64
159000
2000
02:53
there is a brain region地區 in the human人的 brain, in your brains大腦,
65
161000
3000
02:56
whose誰的 job工作 it is to think about other people's人們 thoughts思念.
66
164000
3000
02:59
This is a picture圖片 of it.
67
167000
2000
03:01
It's called the Right Temporo-Parietal顳頂 Junction連接點.
68
169000
2000
03:03
It's above以上 and behind背後 your right ear.
69
171000
2000
03:05
And this is the brain region地區 you used when you saw the pictures圖片 I showed顯示 you,
70
173000
2000
03:07
or when you read Romeo羅密歐 and Juliet朱麗葉
71
175000
2000
03:09
or when you tried試著 to understand理解 Alan艾倫 Greenspan格林斯潘.
72
177000
3000
03:12
And you don't use it for solving any other kinds of logical合乎邏輯 problems問題.
73
180000
4000
03:16
So this brain region地區 is called the Right TPJTPJ.
74
184000
3000
03:19
And this picture圖片 shows節目 the average平均 activation激活
75
187000
2000
03:21
in a group of what we call typical典型 human人的 adults成年人.
76
189000
2000
03:23
They're MITMIT undergraduates
77
191000
2000
03:25
(Laughter
78
193000
4000
03:29
The second第二 thing I want to say about this brain system系統
79
197000
2000
03:31
is that although雖然 we human人的 adults成年人
80
199000
2000
03:33
are really good at understanding理解 other minds頭腦,
81
201000
2000
03:35
we weren't always that way.
82
203000
2000
03:37
It takes children孩子 a long time to break打破 into the system系統.
83
205000
3000
03:40
I'm going to show顯示 you a little bit of that long, extended擴展 process處理.
84
208000
4000
03:44
The first thing I'm going to show顯示 you is a change更改 between之間 age年齡 three and five,
85
212000
3000
03:47
as kids孩子 learn學習 to understand理解
86
215000
2000
03:49
that somebody else其他 can have beliefs信仰 that are different不同 from their own擁有.
87
217000
3000
03:52
So I'm going to show顯示 you a five-year-old五十歲
88
220000
2000
03:54
who is getting得到 a standard標準 kind of puzzle難題
89
222000
2000
03:56
that we call the false belief信仰 task任務.
90
224000
3000
03:59
Rebecca麗貝卡 Saxe薩克斯 (Video視頻): This is the first pirate海盜. His name名稱 is Ivan伊万.
91
227000
3000
04:02
And you know what pirates海盜 really like?
92
230000
2000
04:04
Child兒童: What? RSRS: Pirates海盜 really like cheese起司 sandwiches三明治.
93
232000
3000
I love cheese起司!
94
235000
3000
04:10
RSRS: Yeah. So Ivan伊万 has this cheese起司 sandwich三明治,
95
238000
2000
04:12
and he says, "Yum百勝 yum百勝 yum百勝 yum百勝 yum百勝!
96
240000
2000
04:14
I really love cheese起司 sandwiches三明治."
97
242000
2000
04:16
And Ivan伊万 puts看跌期權 his sandwich三明治 over here, on top最佳 of the pirate海盜 chest胸部.
98
244000
4000
04:20
And Ivan伊万 says, "You know what? I need a drink with my lunch午餐."
99
248000
4000
04:24
And so Ivan伊万 goes to get a drink.
100
252000
3000
04:27
And while Ivan伊万 is away
101
255000
2000
04:29
the wind comes,
102
257000
3000
04:32
and it blows打擊 the sandwich三明治 down onto the grass.
103
260000
2000
04:34
And now, here comes the other pirate
104
262000
4000
04:38
This pirate海盜 is called Joshua約書亞.
105
266000
3000
04:41
And Joshua約書亞 also really loves cheese起司 sandwiches三明治.
106
269000
2000
04:43
So Joshua約書亞 has a cheese起司 sandwich三明治 and he says,
107
271000
2000
I love cheese起司 sandwiches三明治."
108
273000
4000
04:49
And he puts看跌期權 his cheese起司 sandwich三明治 over here on top最佳 of the pirate海盜 chest胸部.
109
277000
3000
04:52
Child兒童: So, that one is his.
110
280000
2000
04:54
RSRS: That one is Joshua's約書亞. That's right.
111
282000
2000
04:56
Child兒童: And then his went on the ground地面.
112
284000
2000
04:58
RSRS: That's exactly究竟 right.
113
286000
2000
05:00
Child兒童: So he won't慣於 know which哪一個 one is his.
114
288000
2000
05:02
RSRS: Oh. So now Joshua約書亞 goes off to get a drink.
115
290000
3000
05:05
Ivan伊万 comes back and he says, "I want my cheese起司 sandwich三明治."
116
293000
4000
05:09
So which哪一個 one do you think Ivan伊万 is going to take?
117
297000
3000
05:12
Child兒童: I think he is going to take that one.
118
300000
2000
05:14
RSRS: Yeah, you think he's going to take that one? All right. Let's see.
119
302000
2000
05:16
Oh yeah, you were right. He took that one.
120
304000
3000
05:19
So that's a five-year-old五十歲 who clearly明確地 understands理解
121
307000
2000
05:21
that other people can have false beliefs信仰
122
309000
2000
05:23
and what the consequences後果 are for their actions行動.
123
311000
2000
05:25
Now I'm going to show顯示 you a three-year-old三十歲
124
313000
3000
05:28
who got the same相同 puzzle難題.
125
316000
2000
05:30
RSRS: And Ivan伊万 says, "I want my cheese起司 sandwich三明治."
126
318000
2000
05:32
Which哪一個 sandwich三明治 is he going to take?
127
320000
3000
05:35
Do you think he's going to take that one? Let's see what happens發生.
128
323000
2000
05:37
Let's see what he does. Here comes Ivan
129
325000
2000
05:39
And he says, "I want my cheese起司 sandwich三明治."
130
327000
3000
05:42
And he takes this one.
131
330000
2000
05:44
Uh-oh嗯,哦. Why did he take that one?
132
332000
3000
05:47
Child兒童: His was on the grass.
133
335000
4000
"他的三明治掉在地上"
05:51
So the three-year-old三十歲 does two things differently不同.
134
339000
3000
05:54
First, he predicts預測 Ivan伊万 will take the sandwich三明治
135
342000
3000
05:57
that's really his.
136
345000
2000
05:59
And second第二, when he sees看到 Ivan伊万 taking服用 the sandwich三明治 where he left his,
137
347000
4000
06:03
where we would say he's taking服用 that one because he thinks it's his,
138
351000
3000
06:06
the three-year-old三十歲 comes up with another另一個 explanation說明:
139
354000
3000
06:09
He's not taking服用 his own擁有 sandwich三明治 because he doesn't want it,
140
357000
2000
06:11
because now it's dirty, on the ground地面.
141
359000
2000
06:13
So that's why he's taking服用 the other sandwich三明治.
142
361000
2000
06:15
Now of course課程, development發展 doesn't end結束 at five.
143
363000
4000
06:19
And we can see the continuation延續 of this process處理
144
367000
2000
06:21
of learning學習 to think about other people's人們 thoughts思念
145
369000
2000
06:23
by upping正在增加 the ante賭注
146
371000
2000
06:25
and asking children孩子 now, not for an action行動 prediction預測,
147
373000
3000
06:28
but for a moral道德 judgment判斷.
148
376000
2000
06:30
So first I'm going to show顯示 you the three-year-old三十歲 again.
149
378000
2000
06:32
RSRS.: So is Ivan伊万 being存在 mean and naughty淘氣 for taking服用 Joshua's約書亞 sandwich三明治?
150
380000
3000
06:35
Child兒童: Yeah.
151
383000
1000
06:36
RSRS: Should Ivan伊万 get in trouble麻煩 for taking服用 Joshua's約書亞 sandwich三明治?
152
384000
3000
06:39
Child兒童: Yeah.
153
387000
2000
06:41
So it's maybe not surprising奇怪 he thinks it was mean of Ivan伊万
154
389000
2000
06:43
to take Joshua's約書亞 sandwich三明治,
155
391000
2000
06:45
since以來 he thinks Ivan伊万 only took Joshua's約書亞 sandwich三明治
156
393000
2000
06:47
to avoid避免 having to eat his own擁有 dirty sandwich三明治.
157
395000
3000
06:50
But now I'm going to show顯示 you the five-year-old五十歲.
158
398000
2000
06:52
Remember記得 the five-year-old五十歲 completely全然 understood了解
159
400000
2000
06:56
RSRS: Was Ivan伊万 being存在 mean and naughty淘氣
161
404000
2000
07:00
Child兒童: Um, yeah.
163
408000
2000
07:02
And so, it is not until直到 age年齡 seven
164
410000
2000
07:04
that we get what looks容貌 more like an adult成人 response響應.
165
412000
3000
07:07
RSRS: Should Ivan伊万 get in trouble麻煩 for taking服用 Joshua's約書亞 sandwich三明治?
166
415000
3000
07:10
Child兒童: No, because the wind should get in trouble麻煩.
167
418000
2000
07:12
He says the wind should get in trouble
168
420000
3000
07:15
for switching交換 the sandwiches三明治.
169
423000
2000
07:17
(Laughter
170
425000
2000
07:19
And now what we've我們已經 started開始 to do in my lab實驗室
171
427000
2000
07:21
is to put children孩子 into the brain scanner掃描器
172
429000
2000
07:23
and ask what's going on in their brain
173
431000
3000
07:26
as they develop發展 this ability能力 to think about other people's人們 thoughts思念.
174
434000
3000
07:29
So the first thing is that in children孩子 we see this same相同 brain region地區, the Right TPJTPJ,
175
437000
4000
07:33
being存在 used while children孩子 are thinking思維 about other people.
176
441000
3000
07:36
But it's not quite相當 like the adult成人 brain.
177
444000
2000
07:38
So whereas in the adults成年人, as I told you,
178
446000
2000
07:40
this brain region地區 is almost幾乎 completely全然 specialized專門 --
179
448000
3000
07:43
it does almost幾乎 nothing else其他 except for thinking思維 about other people's人們 thoughts思念 --
180
451000
3000
07:46
in children孩子 it's much less so,
181
454000
2000
07:48
when they are age年齡 five to eight,
182
456000
2000
07:50
the age年齡 range範圍 of the children孩子 I just showed顯示 you.
183
458000
2000
07:52
And actually其實 if we even look at eight to 11-year-olds- 年的孩子,
184
460000
3000
07:55
getting得到 into early adolescence青春期,
185
463000
2000
07:57
they still don't have quite相當 an adult-like成人樣 brain region地區.
186
465000
3000
08:00
And so, what we can see is that over the course課程 of childhood童年
187
468000
3000
08:03
and even into adolescence青春期,
188
471000
2000
08:05
both the cognitive認知 system系統,
189
473000
2000
08:07
our mind's心靈的 ability能力 to think about other minds頭腦,
190
475000
2000
08:09
and the brain system系統 that supports支持 it
191
477000
2000
08:11
are continuing繼續, slowly慢慢地, to develop發展.
192
479000
3000
08:14
But of course課程, as you're probably大概 aware知道的,
193
482000
2000
08:16
even in adulthood成年,
194
484000
2000
08:18
people differ不同 from one another另一個 in how good they are
195
486000
2000
08:20
at thinking思維 of other minds頭腦, how often經常 they do it
196
488000
2000
08:22
and how accurately準確.
197
490000
2000
08:24
And so what we wanted to know was, could differences分歧 among其中 adults成年人
198
492000
3000
08:27
in how they think about other people's人們 thoughts思念
199
495000
2000
08:29
be explained解釋 in terms條款 of differences分歧 in this brain region地區?
200
497000
3000
08:32
So, the first thing that we did is we gave adults成年人 a version
201
500000
3000
08:35
of the pirate海盜 problem問題 that we gave to the kids孩子.
202
503000
2000
08:37
And I'm going to give that to you now.
203
505000
2000
08:39
So Grace恩典 and her friend朋友 are on a tour遊覽 of a chemical化學 factory,
204
507000
3000
08:42
and they take a break打破 for coffee咖啡.
205
510000
2000
08:44
And Grace'sGrace的 friend朋友 asks for some sugar in her coffee咖啡.
206
512000
3000
08:47
Grace恩典 goes to make the coffee咖啡
207
515000
3000
08:50
and finds認定 by the coffee咖啡 a pot
208
518000
2000
08:52
containing a white白色 powder粉末, which哪一個 is sugar.
209
520000
3000
08:55
But the powder粉末 is labeled標記 "Deadly致命 Poison,"
210
523000
3000
08:58
so Grace恩典 thinks that the powder粉末 is a deadly致命 poison.
211
526000
3000
09:01
And she puts看跌期權 it in her friend's朋友的 coffee咖啡.
212
529000
2000
09:03
And her friend朋友 drinks飲料 the coffee咖啡, and is fine.
213
531000
3000
09:06
How many許多 people think it was morally道德 permissible可允許的
214
534000
2000
09:08
for Grace恩典 to put the powder粉末 in the coffee咖啡?
215
536000
4000
09:12
Okay. Good. (Laughter
216
540000
3000
09:15
So we ask people, how much should Grace恩典 be blamed指責
217
543000
3000
09:18
in this case案件, which哪一個 we call a failed失敗 attempt嘗試 to harm危害?
218
546000
2000
09:20
And we can compare比較 that to another另一個 case案件,
219
548000
2000
09:22
where everything in the real真實 world世界 is the same相同.
220
550000
2000
09:24
The powder粉末 is still sugar, but what's different不同 is what Grace恩典 thinks.
221
552000
3000
09:27
Now she thinks the powder粉末 is sugar.
222
555000
3000
09:30
And perhaps也許 unsurprisingly勿庸置疑, if Grace恩典 thinks the powder粉末 is sugar
223
558000
3000
09:33
and puts看跌期權 it in her friend's朋友的 coffee咖啡,
224
561000
2000
09:35
people say she deserves值得 no blame at all.
225
563000
2000
09:37
Whereas if she thinks the powder粉末 was poison, even though雖然 it's really sugar,
226
565000
4000
09:41
now people say she deserves值得 a lot of blame,
227
569000
3000
09:44
even though雖然 what happened發生 in the real真實 world世界 was exactly究竟 the same相同.
228
572000
3000
09:47
And in fact事實, they say she deserves值得 more blame
229
575000
2000
09:49
in this case案件, the failed失敗 attempt嘗試 to harm危害,
230
577000
2000
09:51
than in another另一個 case案件,
231
579000
2000
09:53
which哪一個 we call an accident事故.
232
581000
2000
09:55
Where Grace恩典 thought the powder粉末 was sugar,
233
583000
2000
09:57
because it was labeled標記 "sugar" and by the coffee咖啡 machine,
234
585000
2000
09:59
but actually其實 the powder粉末 was poison.
235
587000
2000
10:01
So even though雖然 when the powder粉末 was poison,
236
589000
3000
10:04
the friend朋友 drank the coffee咖啡 and died死亡,
237
592000
3000
10:07
people say Grace恩典 deserves值得 less blame in that case案件,
238
595000
3000
10:10
when she innocently傻傻 thought it was sugar,
239
598000
2000
10:12
than in the other case案件, where she thought it was poison
240
600000
2000
10:14
and no harm危害 occurred發生.
241
602000
3000
10:17
People, though雖然, disagree不同意 a little bit
242
605000
2000
10:19
about exactly究竟 how much blame Grace恩典 should get
243
607000
2000
10:21
in the accident事故 case案件.
244
609000
2000
10:23
Some people think she should deserve值得 more blame,
245
611000
2000
10:25
and other people less.
246
613000
2000
10:27
And what I'm going to show顯示 you is what happened發生 when we look inside
247
615000
2000
10:29
the brains大腦 of people while they're making製造 that judgment判斷.
248
617000
2000
10:31
So what I'm showing展示 you, from left to right,
249
619000
2000
10:33
is how much activity活動 there was in this brain region地區,
250
621000
3000
10:36
and from top最佳 to bottom底部, how much blame
251
624000
2000
10:38
people said that Grace恩典 deserved應得.
252
626000
2000
10:40
And what you can see is, on the left
253
628000
2000
10:42
when there was very little activity活動 in this brain region地區,
254
630000
2000
10:44
people paid支付 little attention注意 to her innocent無辜 belief信仰
255
632000
3000
10:47
and said she deserved應得 a lot of blame for the accident事故.
256
635000
3000
10:50
Whereas on the right, where there was a lot of activity活動,
257
638000
2000
10:52
people paid支付 a lot more attention注意 to her innocent無辜 belief信仰,
258
640000
3000
10:55
and said she deserved應得 a lot less blame
259
643000
2000
10:57
for causing造成 the accident事故.
260
645000
2000
10:59
So that's good, but of course課程
261
647000
2000
11:01
what we'd星期三 rather is have a way to interfere干擾
262
649000
2000
11:03
with function功能 in this brain region地區,
263
651000
2000
11:05
and see if we could change更改 people's人們 moral道德 judgment判斷.
264
653000
3000
11:08
And we do have such這樣 a tool工具.
265
656000
2000
11:10
It's called Trans-Cranial經顱 Magnetic磁性 Stimulation促進,
266
658000
2000
11:12
or TMSTMS.
267
660000
2000
簡稱TMS
11:14
This is a tool工具 that lets讓我們 us pass通過 a magnetic磁性 pulse脈衝
268
662000
2000
11:16
through通過 somebody's某人的 skull頭骨, into a small region地區 of their brain,
269
664000
4000
11:20
and temporarily暫時 disorganize破壞組織 the function功能 of the neurons神經元 in that region地區.
270
668000
4000
11:24
So I'm going to show顯示 you a demo演示 of this.
271
672000
2000
11:26
First, I'm going to show顯示 you that this is a magnetic磁性 pulse脈衝.
272
674000
3000
11:29
I'm going to show顯示 you what happens發生 when you put a quarter25美分硬幣 on the machine.
273
677000
3000
11:32
When you hear clicks點擊, we're turning車削 the machine on.
274
680000
4000
11:42
So now I'm going to apply應用 that same相同 pulse脈衝 to my brain,
275
690000
3000
11:45
to the part部分 of my brain that controls控制 my hand.
276
693000
2000
11:47
So there is no physical物理 force, just a magnetic磁性 pulse脈衝.
277
695000
3000
RSRS: Yes.
278
702000
2000
11:57
Okay, so it causes原因 a small involuntary非自願 contraction收縮 in my hand
279
705000
3000
12:00
by putting a magnetic磁性 pulse脈衝 in my brain.
280
708000
3000
12:03
And we can use that same相同 pulse脈衝,
281
711000
2000
12:05
now applied應用的 to the RTPJRTPJ,
282
713000
2000
12:07
to ask if we can change更改 people's人們 moral道德 judgments判斷.
283
715000
3000
12:10
So these are the judgments判斷 I showed顯示 you before, people's人們 normal正常 moral道德 judgments判斷.
284
718000
2000
12:12
And then we can apply應用 TMSTMS to the RTPJRTPJ
285

12:15
and ask how people's人們 judgments判斷 change更改.
286
723000
2000
12:17
And the first thing is, people can still do this task任務 overall總體.
287
725000
4000
12:21
So their judgments判斷 of the case案件 when everything was fine
288
729000
2000
12:23
remain the same相同. They say she deserves值得 no blame.
289
731000
3000
12:26
But in the case案件 of a failed失敗 attempt嘗試 to harm危害,
290
734000
4000
12:30
where Grace恩典 thought that it was poison, although雖然 it was really sugar,
291
738000
3000
12:33
people now say it was more okay, she deserves值得 less blame
292
741000
3000
12:36
for putting the powder粉末 in the coffee咖啡.
293
744000
3000
12:39
And in the case案件 of the accident事故, where she thought that it was sugar,
294
747000
2000
12:41
but it was really poison and so she caused造成 a death死亡,
295
749000
3000
12:44
people say that it was less okay, she deserves值得 more blame.
296
752000
6000
12:50
So what I've told you today今天 is that
297
758000
2000
12:52
people come, actually其實, especially特別 well equipped裝備
298
760000
4000
12:56
to think about other people's人們 thoughts思念.
299
764000
2000
12:58
We have a special特別 brain system系統
300
766000
2000
13:00
that lets讓我們 us think about what other people are thinking思維.
301
768000
3000
13:03
This system系統 takes a long time to develop發展,
302
771000
2000
13:05
slowly慢慢地 throughout始終 the course課程 of childhood童年 and into early adolescence青春期.
303
773000
3000
13:08
And even in adulthood成年, differences分歧 in this brain region地區
304
776000
3000
13:11
can explain說明 differences分歧 among其中 adults成年人
305
779000
2000
13:13
in how we think about and judge法官 other people.
306
781000
3000
13:16
But I want to give the last word back to the novelists
307
784000
3000
13:19
and to Philip菲利普 Roth羅斯, who ended結束 by saying,
308
787000
3000
13:22
"The fact事實 remains遺跡 that getting得到 people right
309
790000
2000
"其實理解別人
13:24
is not what living活的 is all about anyway無論如何.
310
792000
2000
13:26
It's getting得到 them wrong錯誤 that is living活的.
311
794000
2000
13:28
Getting入門 them wrong錯誤 and wrong錯誤 and wrong錯誤,
312
796000
3000
13:31
and then on careful小心 reconsideration复議,
313
799000
2000
13:33
getting得到 them wrong錯誤 again."
314
801000
2000
13:35
Thank you.
315
803000
2000

So, I have a question. When you start開始 talking about using運用
317
815000
2000
13:49
magnetic磁性 pulses脈衝 to change更改 people's人們 moral道德 judgments判斷,
318
817000
3000
13:52
that sounds聲音 alarming驚人.
319
820000
3000
13:55
(Laughter
320
823000
1000
13:56
Please tell me that you're not taking服用 phone電話 calls電話 from the Pentagon五角大樓, say.
321
824000
4000
14:00
RSRS: I'm not.
322
828000
2000
14:02
I mean, they're calling調用, but I'm not taking服用 the call.
323
830000
3000
14:05
(Laughter
324
833000
1000
14:06
CACA: They really are calling調用?
325
834000
2000
14:08
So then seriously
326
836000
3000
14:11
you must必須 lie謊言 awake甦醒 at night sometimes有時
327
839000
3000
14:14
wondering想知道 where this work leads引線.
328
842000
2000
14:16
I mean, you're clearly明確地 an incredible難以置信 human人的 being存在,
329
844000
2000
14:18
but someone有人 could take this knowledge知識
330
846000
3000
14:21
and in some future未來
331
849000
2000
14:25
do acts行為 that people here might威力 be worried擔心 about.
333
853000
3000
14:28
RSRS: Yeah, we worry擔心 about this.
334
856000
2000
14:30
So, there's a couple一對 of things to say about TMSTMS.
335
858000
3000
14:33
One is that you can't be TMSedTMSed without knowing會心 it.
336
861000
2000
14:35
So it's not a surreptitious詭秘 technology技術.
337
863000
3000
14:38
It's quite相當 hard, actually其實, to get those very small changes變化.
338
866000
3000
14:41
The changes變化 I showed顯示 you are impressive有聲有色 to me
339
869000
3000
14:44
because of what they tell us about the function功能 of the brain,
340
872000
2000
14:46
but they're small on the scale規模
341
874000
2000
14:48
of the moral道德 judgments判斷 that we actually其實 make.
342
876000
2000
14:50
And what we changed was not people's人們
343
878000
2000
14:52
moral道德 judgments判斷 when they're deciding決定 what to do,
344
880000
3000
14:55
when they're making製造 action行動 choices選擇.
345
883000
2000
14:57
We changed their ability能力 to judge法官 other people's人們 actions行動.
346
885000
3000
15:00
And so, I think of what I'm doing not so much as
347
888000
2000
15:02
studying研究 the defendant被告 in a criminal刑事 trial審訊,
348
890000
2000
15:04
but studying研究 the jury陪審團.
349
892000
2000
15:06
CACA: Is your work going to lead to any recommendations建議
350
894000
3000
15:09
in education教育, to perhaps也許 bring帶來 up
351
897000
3000
15:12
a generation of kids孩子 able能夠 to make fairer更公平 moral道德 judgments判斷?
352
900000
5000
15:17
RSRS: That's one of the idealistic理想主義 hopes希望.
353
905000
3000
15:20
The whole整個 research研究 program程序 here of studying研究
354
908000
4000
15:24
the distinctive獨特 parts部分 of the human人的 brain is brand new.
355
912000
4000
15:28
Until直到 recently最近, what we knew知道 about the brain
356
916000
2000
15:30
were the things that any other animal's動物 brain could do too,
357
918000
3000
15:33
so we could study研究 it in animal動物 models楷模.
358
921000
2000
15:35
We knew知道 how brains大腦 see, and how they control控制 the body身體
359
923000
2000
15:37
and how they hear and sense.
360
925000
2000
15:39
And the whole整個 project項目 of understanding理解
361
927000
3000
15:42
how brains大腦 do the uniquely獨特地 human人的 things --
362
930000
2000

15:47
and thinking思維 about other people's人們 thoughts思念 -- that's brand new.
364
935000
2000
15:49
And we don't know yet然而 what the implications啟示 will be
365
937000
2000
15:51
of understanding理解 it.
366
939000
2000
15:53
CACA: So I've got one last question. There is this thing called
367
941000
2000
15:55
the hard problem問題 of consciousness意識,
368
943000
2000
15:57
that puzzles謎題 a lot of people.
369
945000
2000
15:59
The notion概念 that you can understand理解
370
947000
3000
16:02
why a brain works作品, perhaps也許.
371
950000
2000
16:04
But why does anyone任何人 have to feel anything?
372
952000
3000
16:07
Why does it seem似乎 to require要求 these beings眾生 who sense things
373
955000
3000
16:10
for us to operate操作?
374
958000

380
971000
4000
16:27
RSRS: I hope希望 they do. And I think they probably大概 won't慣於.
381
975000
4000
16:31
CACA: Why?
382

3000
16:34
RSRS: It's not called the hard problem問題 of consciousness意識 for nothing.
