ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Arthur Ganson - Sculptor
Arthur Ganson's kinetic metal sculptures mix high art with gearhead humor. He's also the inventor of the kids' construction toy Toobers & Zots.

Why you should listen

A modern-day creator of "twittering machines," Arthur Ganson uses simple, plain materials to build witty mechanical art. But the wit is not simply about Rube Goldberg-ian chain-reaction gags (though you'll find a few of those). His work examines the quiet drama of physical motion, whether driven by a motor or by the actions of the viewer. Notions of balance, of rising and falling, of action and reaction and consequence, play themselves out in wire and steel and plastic.

Ganson has been an artist-in-residence at MIT (where the Lemelson-MIT Award Program named him an Inventor of the Week, and where his show "Gestural Engineering" is ongoing) and has shown his work at art and science museums around the world -- including the legendary "Machine with Concrete," which will put on quite a show ... in 2 trillion years.

When I was a very young어린 child어린이, I was extremely매우 introverted내향적인

02:16
So, it has to end종료 with this --
34

03:39
So, I was able할 수 있는 to sort종류 of exercise운동 all of that.

Now, this kind종류 of machine기계 is as close닫기 as I can get to painting그림.
58

04:05
The connection연결 I have with engineering공학
63
227000
3000

but the end종료 result결과 of what I'm doing is really completely완전히 ambiguous모호한.
66

04:21
(Laughter
67
243000
2000
04:23
That's pretty예쁜 ambiguous모호한.
68
245000
2000
04:25
(Laughter
69
247000
1000
04:27
The next다음 것 piece조각 that is going to come up
70
249000
5000
04:32
is an example of a kind종류 of machine기계 that is fairly complex복잡한.
71
254000
9000
04:42
I gave myself자기 the problem문제.
72
264000
2000
04:44
Since이후 I'm always liking기호 to solve풀다 problems문제들,
73

I gave myself자기 the problem문제 of turning선회 a crank크랭크 in one direction방향,
74

4000

04:57
So, when I started시작한 this, I didn't have an overall사무용 겉옷 plan계획 for the machine기계,
77
279000
4000
05:02
but I did have a sense감각 of the gesture몸짓,
78
284000
3000
05:05
and a sense감각 of the shape모양 and how it would occupy점령하다 space공간.
79
287000
4000
05:09
And then it was a matter문제 of starting출발 from one point포인트
80
291000
3000
05:12
and sort종류 of building건물 to that final결정적인 point포인트.
81
294000
3000
05:16
That little gear기어 there switches스위치들 back and forth앞으로 to change변화 direction방향.
82
298000
4000
05:21
And that's a little found녹이다 object목적.
83
303000
2000
05:25
So a lot of the pieces조각들 that I've made만든,
84
307000
3000
05:28
they involve감다 found녹이다 objects사물.
85
310000
3000
05:32
And it really -- it's almost거의 like doing visual시각적 인 puns말장난 all the time.
86
314000
8000
05:40
When I see objects사물, I imagine상상하다 them in motion운동.
87
322000
3000
05:43
I imagine상상하다 what can be said with them.
88
325000
2000
05:45
This next다음 것 one here, "Machine기계 with Wishbone위시 본,"
89
327000
4000
05:49
it came왔다 about from playing연주하다 with this wishbone위시 본 after dinner공식 만찬.
90
331000
7000
05:56
You know, they say, never play놀이 with your food식품 --
91
338000
2000
05:58
but I always play놀이 with things.
92
340000
2000
06:00
So, I had this wishbone위시 본, and I thought,
93
342000
2000
06:02
it's kind종류 of like a cowboy카우보이 who's누가 been on his horse for too long.
94
344000
3000
06:05
(Laughter
95
347000
1000
06:06
And I started시작한 to make him walk산책 across건너서 the table,
96
348000
3000
06:09
and I thought, "Oh, I can make a little machine기계 that will do that."
97
351000
3000
06:14
So, I made만든 this device장치, linked링크 된 it up, and the wishbone위시 본 walks걷다.
98
356000
6000
06:20
And because the wishbone위시 본 is bone -- it's animal동물 --
99
362000
3000
06:23
it's sort종류 of a point포인트 where I think we can enter들어가다 into it.
100
365000
5000
06:29
And that's the whole완전한 piece조각.
101
371000
2000
06:31
(Laughter
102
373000
1000
06:32
That's about that big.
103
374000
3000
06:35
(Applause
104
377000
4000
06:40
This kind종류 of work is also또한 very much like puppetry꼭두각시,
105
382000
5000
06:45
where the found녹이다 object목적 is, in a sense감각, the puppet인형,
106
387000
4000
06:49
and I'm the puppeteer인형극 at first, because I'm playing연주하다 with an object목적.
107
391000
5000
06:54
But then I make the machine기계, which어느 is sort종류 of the stand-in에 서 for me,
108
396000
4000
06:58
and it is able할 수 있는 to achieve이루다 the action동작 that I want.
109
400000
3000
07:03
The next다음 것 piece조각 I'll show보여 주다 you is a much more conceptual개념적 thought,
110
405000
7000
07:10
and it's a little piece조각 called전화 한 "Cory's코리 Yellow노랑 Chair의자."
111
412000
3000
07:14
I had this image영상 in my mind마음, when I saw my son's자제 little chair의자,
112
416000
5000
07:19
and I saw it explode터지다 up and out.
113
421000
4000
07:24
And --
114
426000
2000
07:28
so the way I saw this in my mind마음 at first,
115
430000
3000
07:31
was that the pieces조각들 would explode터지다 up and out with infinite무한의 speed속도,
116

09:29
(Laughter

09:30
And then, I got a call from a friend친구

09:38
But when she suggested제안 된 to be in the show보여 주다, this piece조각 came왔다 to mind마음.
157

So, it's sort종류 of related관련, but you can see it's much more overtly명백히 erotic에로틱 한.

09:48
And this one I call "Machine기계 with Grease유지."

It's just continually계속해서 ejaculating사정하는, and it's --

09:54
this is a happy행복 machine기계, I'll tell you.

09:57
(Laughter

09:58
It's definitely명확히 happy행복.

And then again, this is a found녹이다 object목적, a little fan부채 that I found녹이다.

10:18
And, in a case케이스 like this, I'm trying견딜 수 없는 to make something which어느 is clear명확한

For me, the process방법 is very important중대한,

10:38
because I'm inventing발명 machines기계들,

10:46
So this is a little wire-bending와이어 벤딩 tool수단.
176

I made만든 that tool수단, and then I made만든 this other tool수단

11:09
And that was that tool수단.
183
651000
2000
11:11
It completely완전히 changed변경된 what I could do.
184
653000
2000
11:13
Now here, I'm going to do a very poor가난한 job of silver soldering납땜.
185
655000
4000
11:18
This is not the way they teach가르치다 you to silver solder땜납 when you're in school학교.
186
660000
5000
11:23
I just like, throw던지다 it in.
187
665000
2000
11:25
I mean, real레알 jewelers보석상 put little bits조금 of solder땜납 in.
188
667000
2000
11:28
So, that's a finished끝마친 gear기어.
189
670000
3000
11:32
When I moved움직이는 to Boston보스턴,

(Laughter

11:40
And the idea생각, their그들의 premise전제 was that we wanted to show보여 주다

11:53
It would be -- whatever도대체 무엇이 came왔다 across건너서 the finish line first would be the winner우승자.

11:55
(Laughter
197

11:56
So I made만든 -- this is my first racing경마 sculpture조각,
198
698000
4000
12:00
and I thought, "Oh, I'm going to make a cart카트,
199

12:02
and I'm going to have it --
200

12:04
I'm going to have my hand writing쓰기 'faster빨리,'

203
712000
3000
12:13
So, that's what it does.
204
715000
2000
12:15
(Laughter
205
717000
1000
12:16
But then in the end종료, what I decided결정적인
206
718000

208
726000

12:28
So I would never win승리 the race경주 because I'm always stopping멎는.
209
730000
3000
12:31
But I had a lot of fun장난.
210
733000
2000
12:33
(Applause
211
735000
6000
12:39
Now, I only have two and a half절반 minutes의사록 -- I'm going to play놀이 this.
212
741000
4000
12:43
This is a piece조각 that, for me, is in some ways
213
745000
6000
12:49
the most가장 complete완전한 kind종류 of piece조각.
214
751000

12:51
Because when I was a kid아이, I also또한 played연주 한 a lot of guitar기타.
215
753000
2000
12:53
And when I had this thought,
216
755000
4000
12:57
I was imagining상상하다 that I would make --
217

12:59
I would have a whole완전한 machine기계 theater극장 evening저녁,

13:08
So, I imagined상상 한 a very simple단순한 gestural몸짓의 dance댄스

that would be between중에서 a machine기계 and just a very simple단순한 chair의자, and ...
222
773000

And that leads리드 me to the thought that all of these pieces조각들

14:16
It's always a struggle

14:27
It means방법 nothing at all.
