ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Arthur Ganson - Sculptor
Arthur Ganson's kinetic metal sculptures mix high art with gearhead humor. He's also the inventor of the kids' construction toy Toobers & Zots.

Why you should listen

A modern-day creator of "twittering machines," Arthur Ganson uses simple, plain materials to build witty mechanical art. But the wit is not simply about Rube Goldberg-ian chain-reaction gags (though you'll find a few of those). His work examines the quiet drama of physical motion, whether driven by a motor or by the actions of the viewer. Notions of balance, of rising and falling, of action and reaction and consequence, play themselves out in wire and steel and plastic.

Ganson has been an artist-in-residence at MIT (where the Lemelson-MIT Award Program named him an Inventor of the Week, and where his show "Gestural Engineering" is ongoing) and has shown his work at art and science museums around the world -- including the legendary "Machine with Concrete," which will put on quite a show ... in 2 trillion years.

A few少數 words about how I got started開始,
0
0
2000
00:20
and it has a lot to do with happiness幸福, actually其實.
1
2000
4000
00:24
When I was a very young年輕 child兒童, I was extremely非常 introverted內斂
2
6000
3000
00:27
and very much to myself.
3
9000
3000
00:30
And, kind of as a way of surviving
4
12000
3000
00:33
I would go into my own擁有 very personal個人 space空間,
5
15000
3000
00:36
and I would make things.
6
18000
2000
00:38
I would make things for people
7
20000
2000
00:40
as a way of, you know, giving, showing展示 them my love.
8
22000
4000
00:44
I would go into these private私人的 places地方,
9
26000
3000
00:47
and I would put my ideas思路 and my passions激情 into objects對象 --
10
29000
4000
00:51
and sort分類 of learning學習 how to speak說話 with my hands.
11
33000
3000
00:54
So, the whole整個 activity活動 of working加工 with my hands and creating創建 objects對象
12
36000
4000
00:58
is very much connected連接的 with not only the idea理念 realm領域,
13
40000
5000
01:03
but also with very much the feeling感覺 realm領域.
14
45000
3000
01:07
And the ideas思路 are very disparate不同.
15
49000
4000
01:11
I'm going to show顯示 you many許多 different不同 kinds of pieces,
16
53000
3000
01:14
and there's no real真實 connection連接 between之間 one or the other,
17
56000
3000
01:17
except that they sort分類 of come out of my brain,
18
59000
2000
01:19
and they're all different不同 sort分類 of thoughts思念 that are triggered觸發
19
61000
4000
01:23
by looking at life, and seeing眼看 nature性質 and seeing眼看 objects對象,
20
65000
4000
01:27
and just having kind of playful調皮 random隨機 thoughts思念 about things.
21
69000
4000
01:31
When I was a child兒童, I started開始 to explore探索 motion運動.
22
73000
8000
01:39
I fell下跌 in love with the way things moved移動,
23
81000
2000
01:41
so I started開始 to explore探索 motion運動 by making製造 little flipbooks動畫書.
24
83000
5000
01:46
And this is one that I did, probably大概 like when I was around seventh第七 grade年級,
25
88000
4000
01:50
and I remember記得 when I was doing this,
26
92000
3000
01:53
I was thinking思維 about that little rock there,
27
95000
3000
01:56
and the pathway of the vehicles汽車 as they would fly through通過 the air空氣,
28
98000
5000
02:01
and how the characters人物 --
29
103000
2000
02:03
(Laughter
30
105000
1000
02:04
would come shooting射擊 out of the car汽車,
31
106000
2000
02:06
so, on my mind心神, I was thinking思維 about the trajectory彈道 of the vehicles汽車.
32
108000
7000
02:13
And of course課程, when you're a little kid孩子, there's always destruction毀壞.
33
115000
3000
02:16
So, it has to end結束 with this --
34
118000
2000
02:18
(Laughter
35
120000
1000
02:19
02:21
(Laughter
37
123000
2000
02:23
So that was how I first started開始 to explore探索 the way things moved移動,
38
125000
6000
02:29
and expressed表達 it.
39
131000
2000
02:31
Now, when I went to college學院,
40
133000
2000
02:33
I found發現 myself making製造 fairly相當 complicated複雜, fragile脆弱 machines.
41
135000
7000
02:40
And this really came來了 about
42
142000
3000
02:43
from having many許多 different不同 kinds of interests利益.
43
145000
3000
02:46
When I was in high school學校, I loved喜愛 to program程序 computers電腦,
44
148000
3000
02:49
so I sort分類 of liked喜歡 the logical合乎邏輯 flow of events事件.
45
151000
4000
02:54
I was also very interested有興趣 in perhaps也許 going into surgery手術
46
156000
5000
02:59
and becoming變得 a surgeon外科醫生,
47
161000
2000
03:01
because it meant意味著 working加工 with my hands
48
163000
2000
03:03
in a very focused重點, intense激烈 way.
49
165000
3000
03:06
So, I started開始 taking服用 art藝術 courses培訓班,
50
168000
2000
03:08
and I found發現 a way to make sculpture雕塑
51
170000
3000
03:11
that brought together一起 my love for being存在 very precise精確 with my hands,
52
173000
4000
03:15
with coming未來 up with different不同 kinds of logical合乎邏輯 flows流動 of energy能源 through通過 a system系統.
53
177000
10000
03:25
And also, working加工 with wire -- everything that I did
54
187000
6000
03:31
was both a visual視覺 and a mechanical機械 engineering工程 decision決定
55
193000
6000
03:37
at the same相同 time.
56
199000
2000
03:39
So, I was able能夠 to sort分類 of exercise行使 all of that.
57
201000
2000
03:41
Now, this kind of machine is as close as I can get to painting
58
203000
6000
03:47
And it's full充分 of many許多 little trivial不重要的 end結束 points,
59
209000
5000
03:52
like there's a little foot腳丫子 here that just drags拖動 around in circles
60
214000
5000
03:57
and it doesn't really mean anything.
61
219000
2000
03:59
It's really just for the sort分類 of joy喜悅 of its own擁有 triviality雞毛蒜皮.
62
221000
5000
04:05
The connection連接 I have with engineering工程
63
227000
3000
04:08
is the same相同 as any other engineer工程師, in that I love to solve解決 problems問題.
64
230000
5000
04:13
I love to figure數字 things out,
65
235000
2000
04:15
but the end結束 result結果 of what I'm doing is really completely全然 ambiguous曖昧.
66
237000
5000
04:21
(Laughter
67
243000
2000
04:23
That's pretty漂亮 ambiguous曖昧.
68
245000
2000
04:25
(Laughter
69
247000
1000
04:27
The next下一個 piece that is going to come up
70
249000
5000
04:32
is an example of a kind of machine that is fairly相當 complex複雜.
71
254000
9000
04:42
I gave myself the problem問題.
72
264000
2000
04:44
Since以來 I'm always liking喜歡 to solve解決 problems問題,
73
266000
2000
04:46
I gave myself the problem問題 of turning車削 a crank曲柄 in one direction方向,
74
268000
4000
04:50
and solving all of the mechanical機械 problems問題
75
272000
3000
04:53
for getting得到 this little man to walk步行 back and forth向前.
76
275000
3000
04:57
So, when I started開始 this, I didn't have an overall總體 plan計劃 for the machine,
77
279000
4000
05:02
but I did have a sense of the gesture手勢,
78
284000
3000
05:05
and a sense of the shape形狀 and how it would occupy佔據 space空間.
79
287000
4000
05:09
And then it was a matter of starting開始 from one point
80
291000
3000
05:12
and sort分類 of building建造 to that final最後 point.
81
294000
3000
05:16
That little gear齒輪 there switches開關 back and forth向前 to change更改 direction方向.
82
298000
4000
05:21
And that's a little found發現 object目的.
83
303000
2000
05:25
So a lot of the pieces that I've made製作,
84
307000
3000
05:28
they involve涉及 found發現 objects對象.
85
310000
3000
05:32
And it really -- it's almost幾乎 like doing visual視覺 puns雙關語 all the time.
86
314000
8000
05:40
When I see objects對象, I imagine想像 them in motion運動.
87
322000
3000
05:43
I imagine想像 what can be said with them.
88
325000
2000
05:45
This next下一個 one here, "Machine with Wishbone橫臂,"
89
327000
4000
05:49
it came來了 about from playing播放 with this wishbone叉臂 after dinner晚餐.
90
331000
7000
05:56
You know, they say, never play with your food
91
338000
2000
05:58
but I always play with things.
92
340000
2000
06:00
So, I had this wishbone叉臂, and I thought,
93
342000
2000
06:02
it's kind of like a cowboy牛仔 who's誰是 been on his horse for too long.
94
344000
3000
06:05
(Laughter
95
347000
1000
06:06
And I started開始 to make him walk步行 across橫過 the table,
96
348000
3000
06:09
and I thought, "Oh, I can make a little machine that will do that."
97
351000
3000
06:14
So, I made製作 this device設備, linked關聯 it up, and the wishbone叉臂 walks散步.
98
356000
6000
06:20
And because the wishbone叉臂 is bone -- it's animal動物 --
99
362000
3000
06:23
it's sort分類 of a point where I think we can enter輸入 into it.
100
365000
5000
06:29
And that's the whole整個 piece.
101
371000
2000
06:31
(Laughter
102
373000
1000
06:32
That's about that big.
103
374000
3000
06:35
(Applause
104
377000
4000
06:40
This kind of work is also very much like puppetry
105
382000
5000
06:45
where the found發現 object目的 is, in a sense, the puppet木偶,
106
387000
4000
06:49
and I'm the puppeteer木偶戲 at first, because I'm playing播放 with an object目的.
107
391000
5000
06:54
But then I make the machine, which哪一個 is sort分類 of the stand-in站在 for me,
108
396000
4000
06:58
and it is able能夠 to achieve實現 the action行動 that I want.
109
400000
3000
07:03
The next下一個 piece I'll show顯示 you is a much more conceptual概念上的 thought,
110
405000
7000
07:10
and it's a little piece called "Cory'sCory的 Yellow黃色 Chair椅子."
111
412000
3000
07:14
I had this image圖片 in my mind心神, when I saw my son's兒子 little chair椅子,
112
416000
5000
07:19
and I saw it explode爆炸 up and out.
113
421000
4000
07:24
And --
114
426000
2000
然後──
07:28
so the way I saw this in my mind心神 at first,
115
430000
3000
07:31
was that the pieces would explode爆炸 up and out with infinite無窮 speed速度,
116
433000
4000
07:35
and the pieces would move移動 far out,
117
437000
2000
07:37
and then they would begin開始 to be pulled back
118
439000
2000
07:39
with a kind of a gravitational引力 feel,
119
441000
2000
07:41
to the point where they would approach途徑 infinite無窮 speed速度 back to the center中央.
120
443000
4000
07:45
And they would coalesce合併 for just a moment時刻,
121
447000
3000
07:48
so you could perceive感知 that there was a chair椅子 there.
122
450000
3000
07:51
For me, it's kind of a feeling感覺 about the fleetingnessfleetingness of the present當下 moment時刻,
123
453000
6000
07:57
and I wanted to express表現 that.
124
459000
2000
07:59
Now, the machine is -- in this case案件, it's a real真實 approximation近似 of that,
125
461000
5000
08:04
because obviously明顯 you can't move移動 physical物理 matter
126
466000
3000
08:07
infinitely無限地 with infinite無窮 speed速度 and have it stop instantaneously瞬間.
127
469000
4000
08:11
This whole整個 thing is about four feet wide,
128
473000
4000
08:15
and the chair椅子 itself本身 is only about a few少數 inches英寸.
129
477000
3000
08:18
(Applause
130
480000
5000
08:23
Now, this is a funny滑稽 sort分類 of conceptual概念上的 thing,
131
485000
3000
08:26
and yesterday昨天 we were talking about Danny丹尼 Hillis'希利斯“ "10,000 Year Clock時鐘."
132
488000
5000
08:31
So, we have a motor發動機 here on the left,
133
493000
2000
08:33
and it goes through通過 a gear齒輪 train培養.
134
495000
3000
08:36
There are 12 pairs of 50:1 reductions減少,
135
498000
5000
08:41
so that means手段 that the final最後 speed速度 of that gear齒輪 on the end結束
136
503000
5000
08:46
is so slow that it would take two trillion years年份 to turn once一旦.
137
508000
4000
08:50
So I've invented發明 it in concrete具體, because it doesn't really matter.
138
512000
3000
08:53
(Laughter
139
515000
1000
08:54
Because it could run all the time.
140
516000
2000
08:56
(Laughter
141
518000
1000
08:57
Now, a completely全然 different不同 thought.
142
519000
4000
09:01
I'm always imagining想像 myself in different不同 situations情況.
143
523000
4000
09:05
I'm imagining想像 myself as a machine.
144
527000
2000
09:07
What would I love?
145
529000
2000
09:09
I would love to be bathed沐浴 in oil.
146
531000
2000
09:11
(Laughter
147
533000
1000
09:12
So, this machine does nothing but just bathe洗澡 itself本身 in oil.
148
534000
5000
09:17
(Laughter
149
539000
2000
09:19
(Applause
150
541000
4000
09:23
And it's really, just sort分類 of --
151
545000
3000
09:26
for me, it was just really about the lusciousness甜美 of oil.
152
548000
3000
09:29
(Laughter
153
551000
1000
09:30
And then, I got a call from a friend朋友
154
552000
3000
09:33
who wanted to have a show顯示 of erotic好色之徒 art藝術,
155
555000
3000
09:36
and I didn't have any pieces.
156
558000
2000
09:38
But when she suggested建議 to be in the show顯示, this piece came來了 to mind心神.
157
560000
4000
09:42
So, it's sort分類 of related有關, but you can see it's much more overtly陽謀 erotic好色之徒.
158
564000
4000
09:48
And this one I call "Machine with Grease潤滑脂."
159
570000
3000
09:51
It's just continually不斷 ejaculating射精, and it's --
160
573000
2000
09:53
(Laughter
161
575000
1000
09:54
this is a happy快樂 machine, I'll tell you.
162
576000
3000
09:57
(Laughter
163
579000
1000
09:58
It's definitely無疑 happy快樂.
164
580000
2000
10:02
From an engineering工程 point of view視圖,
165
584000
3000
10:05
this is just a little four-bar四桿 linkage連鎖.
166
587000
2000
10:07
And then again, this is a found發現 object目的, a little fan風扇 that I found發現.
167
589000
5000
10:12
And I thought, what about the gesture手勢 of opening開盤 the fan風扇,
168
594000
3000
10:15
and how simply只是 could I state something.
169
597000
3000
10:18
And, in a case案件 like this, I'm trying to make something which哪一個 is clear明確
170
600000
8000
10:26
but also not suggestive提示 of any particular特定 kind of animal動物 or plant.
171
608000
5000
10:33
For me, the process處理 is very important重要,
172
615000
5000
10:38
because I'm inventing發明了 machines,
173
620000
2000
10:40
but I'm also inventing發明了 tools工具 to make machines,
174
622000
3000
10:43
and the whole整個 thing is all sort分類 of wrapped包裹 up from the beginning開始.
175
625000
3000
10:46
So this is a little wire-bending線彎曲 tool工具.
176
628000
3000
10:49
After many許多 years年份 of bending彎曲 gears齒輪 with a pair of pliers,
177
631000
3000
10:52
I made製作 that tool工具, and then I made製作 this other tool工具
178
634000
3000
10:55
for sort分類 of centering定心 gears齒輪 very quickly很快 --
179
637000
3000
10:59
sort分類 of developing發展 my own擁有 little world世界 of technology技術.
180
641000
3000
11:02
My life completely全然 changed when I found發現 a spot welder焊機.
181
644000
6000
11:08
(Laughter
182
650000
1000
11:09
And that was that tool工具.
183
651000
2000
11:11
It completely全然 changed what I could do.
184
653000
2000
11:13
Now here, I'm going to do a very poor較差的 job工作 of silver soldering焊接.
185
655000
4000
11:18
This is not the way they teach you to silver solder焊接 when you're in school學校.
186
660000
5000
11:23
I just like, throw it in.
187
665000
2000
11:25
I mean, real真實 jewelers珠寶商 put little bits of solder焊接 in.
188
667000
2000
11:28
So, that's a finished gear
189
670000
3000
11:32
When I moved移動 to Boston波士頓,
190
674000
2000
11:34
I joined加盟 a group called the World世界 Sculpture雕塑 Racing賽跑 Society社會.
191
676000
5000
11:39
(Laughter
192
681000
1000
11:40
And the idea理念, their premise前提 was that we wanted to show顯示
193
682000
7000
11:47
pieces of sculpture雕塑 on the street,
194
689000
2000
11:49
and there'd這紅色 be no subjective主觀 decision決定 about what was the best最好.
195
691000
4000
11:53
It would be -- whatever隨你 came來了 across橫過 the finish line first would be the winner優勝者.
196
695000
2000
11:55
(Laughter
197
697000
1000
11:56
So I made製作 -- this is my first racing賽跑 sculpture雕塑,
198
698000
4000
12:00
and I thought, "Oh, I'm going to make a cart大車,
199
702000
2000
12:02
and I'm going to have it --
200
704000
2000
我要─
12:04
I'm going to have my hand writing寫作 'faster'更快,'
201
706000
2000
12:06
so as I run down the street, the cart's車的 going to talk to me
202
708000
4000
12:10
and it's going to go, 'Faster'更快, faster更快!' "
203
712000
3000
12:13
So, that's what it does.
204
715000
2000
12:15
(Laughter
205
717000
1000
12:16
But then in the end結束, what I decided決定
206
718000
5000
12:21
was every一切 time you finish writing寫作 the word,
207
723000
3000
12:24
I would stop and I would give the card to somebody on the side of the road.
208
726000
4000
12:28
So I would never win贏得 the race種族 because I'm always stopping停止.
209
730000
3000
12:31
But I had a lot of fun
210
733000
2000
12:33
(Applause
211
735000
6000
12:39
Now, I only have two and a half minutes分鐘 -- I'm going to play this.
212
741000
4000
12:43
This is a piece that, for me, is in some ways方法
213
745000
6000
12:49
the most complete完成 kind of piece.
214
751000
2000
12:51
Because when I was a kid孩子, I also played發揮 a lot of guitar吉他.
215
753000
2000
12:53
And when I had this thought,
216
755000
4000
12:57
I was imagining想像 that I would make --
217
759000
2000
12:59
I would have a whole整個 machine theater劇院 evening晚間,
218
761000
3000
13:02
where I would -- you would have an audience聽眾,
219
764000
2000
13:04
the curtain窗簾 would open打開, and you'd be entertained封盤 by machines on stage階段.
220
766000
4000
13:08
So, I imagined想像 a very simple簡單 gestural手勢 dance舞蹈
221
770000
3000
13:11
that would be between之間 a machine and just a very simple簡單 chair椅子, and ...
222
773000
8000
13:27
When I'm making製造 these pieces, I'm always trying to find a point
223
789000
4000
13:31
where I'm saying something very clearly明確地 and it's very simple簡單,
224
793000
11000
13:42
but also at the same相同 time it's very ambiguous曖昧.
225
804000
3000
13:45
And I think there's a point between之間 simplicity簡單 and ambiguity歧義
226
807000
5000
13:50
which哪一個 can allow允許 a viewer觀眾 to perhaps也許 take something from it.
227
812000
6000
13:59
And that leads引線 me to the thought that all of these pieces
228
821000
4000
14:03
start開始 off in my own擁有 mind心神, in my heart,
229
825000
4000
14:07
and I do my best最好 at finding發現 ways方法 to express表現 them with materials物料,
230
829000
7000
14:14
and it always feels感覺 really crude原油.
231
836000
2000
14:16
It's always a struggle
232
838000
2000
14:19
but somehow不知何故 I manage管理 to sort分類 of get this thought
233
841000
4000
14:23
out into an object目的, and then it's there, OK.
234
845000
4000
14:27
It means手段 nothing at all.
235
849000
2000
14:29
The object目的 itself本身 just means手段 nothing.
236
851000
2000
14:31
Once一旦 it's perceived感知, and someone有人 brings帶來 it into their own擁有 mind心神,
237
853000
5000
14:36
then there's a cycle週期 that has been completed完成.
238
858000
5000
14:41
And to me, that's the most important重要 thing
239
863000
2000
14:43
because, ever since以來 being存在 a kid孩子, I've wanted to communicate通信 my passion and love.
240
865000
5000
14:48
And that means手段 the complete完成 cycle週期 of coming未來 from inside,
241
870000
5000
14:53
out to the physical物理, to someone有人 perceiving感知 it.
242
875000
5000
15:01
So I'll just let this chair椅子 come down.
243
883000
4000
15:33
(Applause
244
915000
1000
15:34
Thank you.
245
916000
1000
15:35
