ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Caleb Chung - Toy designer
Caleb Chung dreams up toys that interact with children. He's the inventor of Furby, a talking (and listening) robotic furball that sold some 50 million units in the late '90s. His newest plaything: Pleo the adorable robot dinosaur.

Why you should listen

Caleb Chung came to toy inventing with the standard background: a career as a mime, comedian and stunt man. A prolific creator of toys from the get-go (he invented some classic McDonald's Happy Meal giveaways), he became a toy-design rockstar in the 1990s with the Furby . Essentially a talking mogwai, the Furby spoke its own language, could communicate with other Furbys, and connected with its owner in a way that sold tens of millions of the dolls. (Versions of the Furby are still in production worldwide -- and are a magnet for tinkerers.)

Retiring to Idaho after this roaring success, Chung started tinkering with another design that uses sophisticated robotics to evoke a deep emotional bond. The Pleo is the result, a supercute baby dinosaur that begins its emotional and intellectual development when you pull it out of the box. After a few deadline problems (centered around the challenge of fitting 37 sensors, 14 motors and 7 microcontrollers inside a realistic dinosaur skin), Chung's company Ugobe (now Pleoworld) shipped Pleo for Christmas 2007.

04:56
OK, so, so that was a, that was the first kind of a --
91
280000
5000
05:01
that was the first batch批量 of products制品.
92
285000
2000
05:03
Most of them did not go.
93
287000

05:04
You get one out of 20, one out of 30 products制品.
94
288000
3000
05:07
And every一切 now and then, we do something like a,
95
291000
1000
05:08
you know, an automated自动化 hair头发 wrap machine, you know,
96
292000
4000
05:12
that tangles缠结 your hair头发 and pulls your scalp头皮 out, and --
97
296000
2000
05:14
and we'd星期三 make some money on that, you know. And we'd星期三 give it out.
98
298000
3000
05:17
But eventually终于, we left L.A., and we moved移动 to Idaho爱达荷州,
99
301000
6000
05:23
where there was actually其实 a lot of peace和平 and quiet安静.
100
307000
2000
05:25
And I started开始 working加工 on this project项目
101
309000
2000
05:27
-- oh, I have to tell you about this real真实 quick.
102
311000
2000
05:29
Throughout始终 this whole整个 thing, making制造 toys玩具,
103
313000
3000
05:32
I think there is a real真实 correlation相关 with innovation革新 and art艺术 and science科学.
104
316000
3000
05:35
There's some kind of a blend混合 that happens发生
105
319000
2000
05:37
that allows允许, you know, to find innovation革新.
106
321000
3000
05:40
And I tried试着 to sum this up in some kind of symbol符号
107
324000
3000
05:43
that means手段 something, to me anyway无论如何.
108
327000
2000
05:45
And so, art艺术 and science科学 have a kind of dynamic动态 balance平衡,
109
329000
3000
05:48
that's where I think innovation革新 happens发生.
110
332000
2000
05:50
And actually其实, this is, to me, how I can come up with great ideas思路.
111
334000
5000
05:55
But it's not how you actually其实 get leverage杠杆作用.
112
339000
2000
05:57
Actually其实, you have to put a circle around that, and call it business商业.
113
341000
2000
05:59
And those three together一起, I think, give you leverage杠杆作用 in the world世界.
114
343000
3000
06:02
But moving移动 on.
115
346000
1000
06:03
So, this is a quick tale故事 I'm going to tell. This is the Furby菲比 tale故事.
116
347000
4000
06:07
As he said, I was co-inventor共同发明 of the Furby菲比.
117
351000
2000
06:09
I did the body身体 and creature生物 -- well, you'll你会 see.
118
353000
3000
06:12
So by way of showing展示 you this, you can kind of
119
356000
2000
06:14
get an understanding理解 of what it is to,
120
358000
3000
06:17
hopefully希望, try to create创建 robotic机器人 life forms形式, or technology技术

06:37
I came来了 out of the movie电影 business商业, as I said,
127
381000
2000
06:39
and I said, let's make these animatronic电子动画 robots机器人.
128
383000
2000
06:41
Let's make these things.
129
385000
2000
06:43
And so I've always had a big interest利益 in this.
130
387000
2000
06:45
This one actually其实 didn't go anywhere随地,
131
389000
1000
06:46
but I got my feet wet湿 doing this.
132
390000
2000
06:48
This is a smaller one, and I have a little moving移动 torso躯干 on there.
133
392000
3000
06:51
A little, tiny guy walks散步 along沿.
06:54
lots of servo伺服 hacking黑客, lots of mechanical机械 stuff东东.
135
398000
2000
06:56
There's another另一个 one.
136
400000
1000
06:57
He actually其实 has skeletor骷髅 legs, I think, he's wearing穿着 there.
137
401000
3000
07:00
Oh, this is a little pony小马, little pony小马 -- very cute可爱 little thing.
138
404000
2000
07:02
The point of showing展示 these is I've always been interested有兴趣 in little artificial人造 life pieces.
139
406000
5000
07:07
So the challenge挑战 was -- I worked工作 for Microsoft微软 for a little bit,
140
411000
4000
07:11
working加工 on the Microsoft微软 Barney巴尼.
141
415000
1000
07:12
And this is a -- you know, the purple紫色 dinosaur恐龙 with kind of bloat膨胀 wear穿.
142
416000
5000
07:17
And, you know, they had lots, just lots of stuff东东 in there that you didn't need, I thought.
143
421000
4000
07:21
And then Microsoft微软 can just fill a, you know, a warehouse仓库
144
425000
3000
07:24
full充分 of this stuff东东 and see if they sell.
145
428000
2000
07:26
So it's a really strange奇怪 business商业 model模型 compared相比 to coming未来 from a toy玩具 company公司.
146
430000
4000
07:30
But anyway无论如何, a friend朋友 of mine and I, Dave戴夫 Hampton汉普顿,
147
434000
3000
07:33
decided决定 to see if we could do like a single-cell单细胞 organism生物.
148
437000
2000
07:35
What's the fewest最少 pieces we could use to make a little life form形成?
149
439000
4000
07:39
And that's our little, thirty-cent三十美分 Mabuchi万宝至 motor发动机.
150
443000
2000
07:41
And so, I have all these design设计 books图书,
151
445000
2000
07:43
like I'm sure many许多 of you have.
152
447000
1000
07:44
And throughout始终 the books图书 -- this is the first page on Furby菲比 --
153
448000
3000
07:47
I have kind of the art艺术 and science科学.
154
451000
2000
07:49
I have the why over here, and the how over there.
155
453000
3000
07:52
I try to do a lot of philosophy哲学, a lot of thinking思维 about all of these projects项目.
156
456000
3000
07:55
Because they're not just "bing" ideas思路;
157
459000
1000
因为他们不仅仅是灵光一闪的灵感;
07:56
you have to really dig deep in these things.
158
460000
3000
07:59
So there's some real真实 pseudo-code伪代码 over here,
159
463000
2000
08:01
and getting得到 the idea理念 of different不同 kind of drives驱动器, things like that.
160
465000
3000
08:04
And originally本来, Furby菲比 only had two eyes眼睛 and some batteries电池 on the bottom底部.
161
468000
3000
08:07
And then we said, well, you're going to feed饲料 him,
162
471000
1000
08:08
and he needs需求 to talk, and it got more complicated复杂.
163
472000
3000
08:11
And then I had to figure数字 out how I'm going to use that one motor发动机
164
475000
1000
08:12
to make the eyes眼睛 move移动, and the ears耳朵 move移动,
165
476000
2000
08:14
and the body身体 to move移动, and the mouth to move移动.
166
478000
2000
08:16
And, you know, I want to make it blink
167
480000
1000
08:17
and do all that at the same相同 time.
168
481000
2000
08:19
Well, I came来了 up with this kind of linear线性
169
483000
2000
08:21
expression表达 thing with these cams凸轮 and feedback反馈. And that worked工作 pretty漂亮 well.
170
485000
4000
08:25
Then I started开始 to get a little more realistic实际
171
489000
2000
08:27
and I have to start开始 drawing画画 the stuff东东.
172
491000
1000
08:28
And there's my "note注意 to self" at the top最佳:
173
492000
2000
08:30
"lots of engineering工程."
174
494000
1000
“大量的工程学。”
08:31
So that turned转身 out to be a little more than true真正.
175
495000
3000
08:34
There's my first exploded爆炸 view视图 and all the little pieces
176
498000
3000
08:37
and the little worm drive驾驶 and all that stuff东东.
177
501000
2000
08:39
And then I've got to start开始 building建造 it,
178
503000
2000
08:41
so this is the real真实 thing.
179
505000
1000
08:42
I get up and start开始 cutting切割 my finger手指 and gluing胶合 things together一起.
180
506000
3000
08:45
And that's my little workshop
181
509000
1000
08:46
And there's the first little cam凸轮 that drove开车 Furby菲比.
182
510000
2000
08:48
And there's Furby菲比 on the half shell贝壳.
183
512000
2000
08:50
You can see the little BBBB in the box is my tilt倾斜 sensor传感器.
184
514000
4000
08:54
I just basically基本上 gnawed all this stuff东东 out of plastic塑料.
185
518000
3000
08:57
So there's the back of his head with a billion十亿 holes in it.
186
521000
4000
09:01
And there I am. I'm doneDONE. There's my little Furby
187
525000
2000
09:03
No, it's a little robot机器人 on heroin海洛因 or something, I think.
188
527000
3000
09:06
(Laughter
189
530000
1000
09:07
So right now, you see, I love little robots
190
531000
4000
09:11
So my wife妻子 says, "Well, you may可能 like it, but nobody没有人 else其他 will."
191
535000
3000
09:14
So she comes to the rescue
192
538000
1000
09:15
This is my wife妻子 Christi斯蒂, who is just, you know,
193
539000
1000
09:16
my muse沉思 and my partner伙伴 for eternity永恒 here.
194
540000
3000
09:19
And she does drawings图纸, right?
195
543000
1000
09:20
She's an actual实际, you know, artist艺术家.
196
544000
2000
09:22
And she starts启动 doing all these different不同 drawings图纸
197
546000
2000
09:24
and does color颜色 patterns模式 and coloring染色 books图书.
198
548000
3000
09:27
And I like the guy with the cigar雪茄 at the bottom底部 there.
199
551000
3000
09:30
He didn't test测试 so well, but I like him.
200
554000
2000
09:32
And then she started开始 doing these other images图片.
201
556000
2000
09:34
At that time, Beanie豆豆 Babies婴儿 was a big hit击中,
202
558000
2000
09:36
and we thought, we'll do a bunch of different不同 ones那些.
203
560000
2000
09:38
So here's这里的 a little pink one, a little pouf蒲团 on his head.
204
562000
2000
09:40
And here's这里的 -- this didn't do so well in testing测试 either, I don't know why.
205
564000
4000
09:44
There's my favorite喜爱, Demon恶魔 Furby菲比.
206
568000
1000
09:45
That was a good one.
207
569000
2000
09:47
Anyway无论如何, finally最后 settled安定 on kind of this kind of a look,
208
571000
2000
09:49
little poufypoufy body身体, a little imaginary假想 character字符.
209
573000
2000
09:51
And there he is, a little bush衬套 baby宝宝 on -- caught抓住 in the headlights头灯 there.
210
575000
4000
09:55
I actually其实 went to Toys玩具"R"Us, got a little furry毛茸茸 cat,
211
579000
2000
09:57
ripped撕开 it apart距离 and made制作 this.
212
581000
2000
09:59
And since以来 then, every一切 time I come home from Toys玩具"R"Us
213
583000
2000
10:01
with dolls玩偶 or something, they disappear消失 from my desk
214
585000
2000
10:03
and they get hidden in the house.
215
587000
3000
10:06
I have three girls女孩 and they just, they --
216
590000
1000
10:07
it's like a rescue拯救 animal动物 thing they're going there.
217
591000
2000
10:09
(Laughter
218
593000
2000
10:11
So, a little tether系链 coming未来 off,
219
595000
1000
10:12
it's just a control控制 for the Fur's皮草 mouth and his eyes眼睛.
220
596000
3000
10:15
It's just a little server服务器 control控制 and I made制作 a little video视频 going:
221
599000
2000
10:17
"Hi你好, my name's名字的 Furby菲比, and I'm good,"
222
601000
2000
“嗨,我叫Furby,我很好,”
10:19
you know, and then I'd reach达到 my hand.
223
603000
1000
10:20
He'd他会 -- you can tickle痒痒 him. When I put my hand up,
224
604000
2000
10:22
"Ha, ha, ha, ha" and that's how we sold出售 him.
225
606000
3000
“哈,哈,哈,哈”,这就是为什么他很好卖。
10:25
And Hasbro孩之宝 actually其实 said, I meant意味着 Tiger Electronics电子产品 at the time,
226
609000
4000
10:29
said, "Yeah, we want to do this.
227
613000
1000
10:30
We have, you know, 13 weeks or something to Toy玩具 Fair公平,
228
614000
3000
10:33
and we're going to hire聘请 you guys to do this."
229
617000
3000
10:36
And so Dave戴夫 and I got working加工.
230
620000
2000
10:38
Mostly大多 me, because it was all mechanics机械学 at this point.
231
622000
2000
10:40
So now I have to really figure数字 out all kinds of stuff东东
232
624000
3000
10:43
I don't know how to do.
233
627000
1000
10:44
And I started开始 working加工 with Solid固体 Works作品
234
628000
1000
10:45
and a whole整个 other group to do that.
235
629000
1000
10:46
And we started
236
630000
1000
10:47
this was way back before there was really much SLASLA going on,
237
631000
3000
10:50
not a lot of rapid快速 prototyping原型.
238
634000
1000
10:51
We certainly当然 didn't have the money to do this.
239
635000
2000
10:53
They only paid支付 me, like, a little bit of money to do this,
240
637000
2000
10:55
so I had to call a friend朋友 of a friend朋友
241
639000
2000
10:57
who was running赛跑 the GMGM prototype原型 plant, SLASLA plant, that was down.
242
641000
4000
11:01
And they said, "Yeah, well, we'll run them."
243
645000
1000
11:02
So they ran all the shells炮弹 for us, which哪一个 was nice不错 of them.
244
646000
2000
11:04
And the cams凸轮 I got cut at Hewlett惠普 Packard惠普.
245
648000
2000
11:06
We snuck偷传 in on the weekend周末.
246
650000
1000
11:07
And so we just had a disc圆盘 of the files.
247
651000
3000
11:10
But they have a closed关闭 system系统, so you couldn't不能 print打印 the things out on the machine.
248
654000
3000
11:13
So we actually其实 printed印刷的 them out on clear明确 and taped录音 them on the monitors显示器.
249
657000
4000
11:17
And on the weekend周末 we ran the parts部分 for that.
250
661000
2000
11:19
So this is how they come out close to the end结束.
251
663000
2000
11:21
And then they looked看着 like little Garfields加菲尔德 there.
252
665000
3000
11:24
Eight months个月 later后来 -- you may可能 remember记得 this,
253
668000
2000
11:26
this was a -- total, total, total chaos混沌.
254
670000
3000
11:29
For a while, they were making制造 two million百万 FurbysFurbys a month.
255
673000
2000
11:31
They actually其实 wound伤口 up doing about 40 million百万 FurbysFurbys.
256
675000
2000
11:33
I -- it's unbelievable难以置信的 how -- I don't know how that can be.
257
677000
4000
11:37
And Hasbro孩之宝 made制作 about, you know, a billion十亿 and a half dollars美元.
258
681000
3000
11:40
And I just a little bit on each one.
259
684000
2000
11:42
So full充分 circle -- why do I do this?
260
686000
3000
11:45
Why do you, you know, try to do this stuff东东?
261
689000
2000
11:47
And it's, of course课程, for your kids孩子.
262
691000
2000
11:49
And there's my youngest最年轻的 daughter女儿 with her FurbysFurbys.
263
693000
2000
11:51
And she still actually其实 has those.
264
695000
1000
11:52
So I kind of retired退休, and we're already已经 living活的 in paradise天堂
265
696000
2000
11:54
up in Boise博伊西, on a river, you know. So
266
698000
3000
11:57
and then I started开始 another另一个 company公司 called Toy玩具 Innovation革新
267
701000
2000
11:59
and we did some projects项目 with Mattel美泰 with
268
703000
4000
12:03
actually其实 with a lady淑女 who's谁是 here, Ivy常春藤 Ross罗斯,
269
707000
1000
12:04
and we did Miracle奇迹 Moves移动 Baby宝宝,
270
708000
2000
12:06
made制作 it in Wired有线 magazine杂志, did a bunch of other stuff东东.
271
710000
2000
12:08
And then I started开始 another另一个 company公司.
272
712000
1000
12:09
We did a little hand-held手持式 device设备 for teens青少年 that could hook up to the Internet互联网,
273
713000
5000
12:14
won韩元 "Best最好 Innovations创新" at CESCES,
274
718000
2000
在CES(消费电子展)最好的创新玩具之一,
12:16
but really I kind of slowed放缓 down and said, OK,
275
720000
3000
12:19
I just ... After a while, I had this old tape胶带 of this dinosaur恐龙,
276
723000
3000
12:22
and I gave it to this guy, and this other guy saw it,
277
726000
3000
12:25
and then people started开始 to want to do it.
278
729000
2000
12:27
And they said they'd他们会 spend all this time.
279
731000
2000
12:29
So I said, "OK, let's try to do this dinosaur恐龙 project项目."
280
733000
2000
12:31
The crazy idea理念 is we're going to try to clone克隆 a dinosaur恐龙
281
735000
4000
12:35
as much as we can with today's今天的 technology技术.
282
739000
2000
12:37
And it's not really -- but as close as we can do.
283
741000
3000
12:40
And we're going to try to really pull this off,
284
744000
3000
12:43
intentfullyintentfully try to make something that seems似乎 like it's alive.
285
747000
4000
12:47
Not a robot机器人 that kind of does, but let's really go for it.
286
751000
3000
12:50
So I picked采摘的 a Camarasaurus圆顶龙,
287
754000
2000
12:52
because the Camarasaurus圆顶龙 was the most abundant丰富 of the sauropods蜥脚类恐龙 in North America美国.
288
756000
4000
12:56
And you could actually其实 find full充分 fossil化石 evidence证据 of these.
289
760000
3000
12:59
That's a juvenile少年.
290
763000
1000
13:00
And so we actually其实 went in.
291
764000
1000
13:01
There's a book called "Walking步行 on Eggshells蛋壳,"
292
765000
2000
13:03
where they found发现 actual实际 sauropod蜥脚类 skin皮肤 in Patagonia巴塔哥尼亚.
293
767000
3000
13:06
And the picture图片 from the book, so when I --
294
770000
2000
13:08
I told the sculptor雕塑家 to use this bump磕碰 pattern模式, whatever随你 you can to copy复制 that.
295
772000
3000
13:11
Very, very obsessive
296
775000
2000
13:13
There's a kind of truncated Camarasaurus圆顶龙 skeleton骨架,
297
777000
2000
13:15
but the geometry's几何的 correct正确.
298
779000
2000
13:17
And then I went in, and measured测量 all the geometry几何
299
781000
1000
13:18
because I figured想通, hey, biomimicry仿生学.
300
782000
2000
13:20
If I do it kind of right, it might威力 move移动 kind of like the real真实 thing.
301
784000
3000
13:23
So there's the motor
302
787000
2000
13:25
And about this time, you know, all these other people are starting开始 to help.
303
789000
3000
13:28
Here's这里的 an example of what we did with the skull头骨.
304
792000
1000
13:29
There's the skull头骨, there's my drawing画画 of a skull头骨.
305
793000
3000
13:32
There's kind of the skin皮肤 version of the soft柔软的 tissue组织.
306
796000
3000
13:35
There's the mechanism机制 that would go in there,
307
799000
2000
13:37
kind of a Geneva日内瓦 drive驾驶.
308
801000
1000
13:38
There's some Solid固体 Works作品 versions版本 of it.
309
802000
2000
13:40
Here's这里的 some SLASLA parts部分 of the same相同 thing.
310
804000
2000
13:42
And then, these are really crude原油 pieces. We were just doing some tests测试 here.
311
806000
3000
13:45
There's the skull头骨, pretty漂亮 much the same相同 shape形状 as the Camarasaurus圆顶龙.
312
809000
3000
13:48
There's a photorealistic真实感 eye behind背后 a lens镜片.
313
812000
3000
13:51
And there's kind of the first exploded爆炸 view视图, or see-through透视 view视图.
314
815000
3000
13:54
There's the first SLASLA version, and it already已经 kind of has the feel,
315
818000
4000
13:58
it has kind of a cuteness可爱 already已经.
316
822000
2000
14:00
And the thing about blending混纺 science科学 and art艺术
317
824000
2000
14:02
in this multidisciplinary多学科 stuff东东 is you can do a robot机器人,
318
826000
2000
14:04
and then you go back and do the shape形状,
319
828000
2000
14:06
and then you go back and forth向前.
320
830000
1000
14:07
The servos舵机 in the front面前 legs, we had to shape形状 those like muscles肌肉.
321
831000
3000
14:10
They had to fit适合 within the envelope信封.
322
834000
1000
14:11
There was a tremendous巨大 amount of work to get all that working加工 right.
323
835000
4000
14:15
All the neck颈部 and the tail尾巴 are cable电缆,
324
839000
1000
14:16
so it moves移动 smoothly顺利 and organically有机.
325
840000
2000
14:18
And then, of course课程, you're not doneDONE yet然而.
326
842000
1000
14:19
You have to get the look for the skin
327
843000
2000
14:21
The skin's皮肤的 a whole整个 another另一个 thing, probably大概 the hardest最难 part部分.
328
845000
3000
14:24
So you hire聘请 artists艺术家, and you try to get the look and feel
329
848000
2000
14:26
of the character字符.
330
850000
1000
14:27
Now, this is not -- we're character字符 designers设计师, right?
331
851000
2000
14:29
And we're still trying to keep with the real真实 character字符.
332
853000
3000
14:32
So, now you go back and you cover the whole整个 thing with clay粘土.
333
856000
2000
14:34
Now you start开始 doing the sculpture雕塑 for this.
334
858000
3000
14:37
And you can see we got a guy from --
335
861000
1000
14:38
who's谁是 just a fanatic狂热的 about dinosaurs恐龙
336
862000
3000
14:41
to do the sculpting雕刻 for us,
337
865000
1000
14:42
down to the spoon-shaped匙形 teeth and everything.
338
866000
1000
14:43
And then more sculpting雕刻, and then more sculpting雕刻,
339
867000
2000
14:45
and then more sculpting雕刻, and then more sculpting雕刻.
340
869000
2000
14:47
And then, four years年份 and 10 million百万 dollars美元 later后来,
341
871000
3000
14:50
we have a little PleoPLEO.
342
874000
2000
14:52
John约翰, do you want to bring带来 him up?
343
876000
2000
14:54
John约翰 SosokaSosoka is our CTOCTO, and is really the man
344
878000
2000
14:56
that's doneDONE most of the work with our 40-person-人 company公司.
345
880000
3000
14:59
I'd like to give John约翰 a hand. He never gets得到 recognition承认. This is John约翰 SosokaSosoka.
346
883000
3000
15:02
(Applause
347
886000
4000
15:06
So, thank you, John约翰, thank you,
348
890000
2000
15:08
and get back to work, all right, man?
349
892000
2000
15:10
All right --
350
894000
1000
15:11
(Laughter
351
895000
4000
15:15
-- no, it's very painful痛苦, so --
352
899000
1000
15:16
(Laughter
353
900000
2000
15:18
-- these are little PleosPleos and you can probably大概 see them.
354
902000
4000
15:22
This -- I on purpose目的 -- they go through通过 life stages阶段.
355
906000
3000
15:25
So when you first get them, they're babies
356
909000
2000
15:27
And you -- more you have them, kind of the older旧的 they get,
357
911000
2000
15:29
and they kind of learn学习 through通过 their behavior行为.
358
913000
2000
15:31
So this one, this one's那些 actually其实 asleep睡着, and -- hang on.
359
915000
5000
15:36
PleoPLEO, wake唤醒 up. PleoPLEO, come on.
360
920000
3000
15:39
So this guy's家伙 listening to my voice语音 here.
361
923000
1000
15:40
But they have 40 sensors传感器 all over their body身体.
362
924000
3000
15:43
They have seven processors处理器, they have 14 motors马达,
363
927000
4000
15:47
they have --
364
931000
2000
15:49
but you don't care关心, do you?
365
933000
1000
15:50
They're just cute可爱, right? That's the idea理念, that's the idea理念.
366
934000
4000
15:54
So you see -- hey, come on. Hey, did you feel that?
367
938000
3000
15:57
There's something big and loud over here.
368
941000
2000
15:59
Hey.
369
943000
1000
16:00
(Laughter
370
944000
4000
16:04
That's good, wake唤醒 up, wake唤醒 up, wake唤醒 up.
371
948000
2000
16:06
Yeah, they're like kids孩子, you know.
372
950000
1000
16:07
You, yeah, yeah. Okay, he's hungry
373
951000
2000
16:09
I'll show显示 you what he's been doing for, for four years年份.
374
953000
3000
16:12
Here, here, here. Have some money, PleoPLEO.
375
956000
2000
16:14
(Laughter
376
958000
1000
16:15
There you go.
377
959000
1000
16:16
That's what the investors投资者 think, that it's just --
378
960000
7000
16:23
(Laughter
379
967000
2000
16:25
-- right, right. So they're really sweet little guys.
380
969000
3000
16:28
And we're hoping希望 that -- you know,
381
972000
3000
16:31
our belief信仰 is that humans人类 need to feel empathy同情 towards things
382
975000
5000
16:36
in order订购 to be more human人的.
383
980000
1000
16:37
And we think we can help that out by having
384
981000
3000
16:40
little creatures生物 that you can love.
385
984000
2000
16:42
Now these are not robots机器人, they're kind of lovebotslovebots, you know.
386
986000
3000
16:45
They do change更改 over time.
387
989000
2000
16:47
But mostly大多 they evoke唤起 a feeling感觉 of caring爱心.
388
991000
3000
16:50
And we have a -- I have a little something here.
389
994000
6000
16:56
Now I do want to say that, you know, UgobeUgobe is not there yet然而.
390
1000000
5000
17:01
We've我们已经 just opened打开 the door, and it's for all of you to step through通过 it.
391
1005000

17:05
We did include包括 some things that are hopefully希望 useful有用.
392
1009000
2000
17:07
Excuse借口 me, PleoPLEO.
393
1011000
1000
17:08
They -- he has a USBUSB and he has a SDSD card,
394
1012000
3000
17:11
so it's completely全然 open打开 architecture建筑.
395
1015000
2000
17:13
So anyone任何人 can plug插头 him -- (Applause掌声) -- thank you.
396
1017000
1000
17:14
This is John约翰 over here.
397
1018000
2000
17:16
Anyone任何人 can take PleoPLEO and they can totally完全 redo重做 his personality个性.
398
1020000
4000
17:20
You can make him bipolar双极, or as someone有人 said, a --
399
1024000
2000
17:22
(Laughter
400
1026000
1000
17:23
you can change更改 his homeostatic稳态 drives驱动器, or whatever随你 you want to call them.
401
1027000

17:30
Kids童装 can just drag拖动 and drop下降, put in new sounds声音.
402
1034000
2000
17:32
We -- actually其实, it's very hard to keep people from doing this.
403
1036000
3000
