07:19
So very simple単純 things like that,
179
424000

07:21
we're trying試す to learn学ぶ about baskingバスキング sharksサメ.
180
426000
2000
07:23
One thing that I think
181
428000
3000
07:26
is a very surprising驚くべき and strange奇妙な thing
182
431000
2000
07:28
is just how low低い the genetic遺伝的な diversity多様性 of sharksサメ are.
183
433000
3000
07:31
Now I'm not a geneticist遺伝学者, so I'm not going to pretendふりをする to understandわかる the genetics遺伝学.
184
436000
3000
07:34
And that's why it's great to have collaboration
07:37
Whereasそれに対して I'm a fieldフィールド person,
186
442000

07:39
I get panicパニック attacks攻撃 if I have to spend費やす too manyたくさんの hours時間

07:44
So we can work with geneticists遺伝学者 who understandわかる that.
189
449000
3000
07:47
So when they looked見た at the genetics遺伝学 of baskingバスキング sharksサメ,
190
452000
2000
07:49
they found見つけた that the diversity多様性 was incredibly信じられないほど low低い.
191
454000
3000
07:52
If you look at the first lineライン really,
192
457000
2000
07:54
you can see that all these different異なる shark species are all quiteかなり similar類似.
193
459000
3000
07:57
I think this means手段 basically基本的に that they're all sharksサメ
194
462000
2000
07:59
and they've彼らは come from a common一般 ancestry祖先.
195
464000
2000
08:01
If you look at nucleotideヌクレオチド diversity多様性,
196
466000
3000
08:04
whichどの is more genetics遺伝学 that are passed合格 on throughを通して parents,
197
469000
3000
08:07
you can see that baskingバスキング sharksサメ, if you look at the first study調査,
198
472000
3000
08:10
was an order注文 of magnitudeマグニチュード lessもっと少なく diversity多様性
199
475000
2000
08:12
than other shark species.
200
477000
2000
08:14
And you see that this work was done完了 in 2006.
201
479000
2000
08:16
Before 2006, we had no ideaアイディア of the genetic遺伝的な variability変動性 of baskingバスキング sharksサメ.
202
481000
3000
08:19
We had no ideaアイディア, did they distinguish区別する into different異なる populations人口?
203
484000
3000
08:22
Were there subpopulations
204
487000
2000
08:24
And of courseコース, that's very important重要 if you want to know
205
489000
2000
08:26
what the population人口 sizeサイズ is and the status状態 of the animals動物.
206
491000
2000
08:29
So Lesレス Nobleノーブル in Aberdeenアバディーン
207
494000
2000
08:31
kind種類 of found見つけた this a bitビット unbelievable信じられない really.
208
496000
2000
08:33
So he did another別の study調査
209
498000
3000
210
501000
3000

08:39
whichどの are much more expensive高価な, much more time consuming消費する,
211
504000
3000
08:42
and, to his surprise驚き, came来た up with almostほぼ identical同一 results結果.
212
507000
3000
08:45
So it does seem思われる to be
213
510000
2000
08:47
that baskingバスキング sharksサメ, for some reason理由, have incredibly信じられないほど low低い diversity多様性.
214
512000
3000
08:50
And it's thought maybe it was a bottleneckボトルネック, a genetic遺伝的な bottleneckボトルネック
215
515000
2000
08:52
thought to be 12,000 years ago,
216
517000
2000

08:54
and this has caused原因 a very low低い diversity多様性.
217
519000
3000
08:57
And yetまだ, if you look at whale sharksサメ,
218
522000
2000
08:59
whichどの is the other planktonプランクトン eating食べる large shark,
219
524000
3000
09:02
its diversity多様性 is much greater大きい.
220
527000
2000
09:04
So it doesn't really make senseセンス at all.
221
529000
2000
09:06
They found見つけた that there was no genetic遺伝的な differentiation差別化
222
531000
2000
09:08
betweenの間に any of the world's世界の oceans of baskingバスキング sharksサメ.
223
533000
3000
09:11
So even thoughしかし baskingバスキング sharksサメ are found見つけた throughout全体を通して the world世界,
224
536000
2000
09:13
you couldn'tできなかった tell the difference genetically遺伝的に
225
538000
2000

09:18
They all basically基本的に seem思われる the same同じ.
227
543000
2000
09:20
But again, it's kind種類 of surprising驚くべき. You wouldn'tしないだろう really expect期待する that.
228
545000
3000
09:23
I don't understandわかる this. I don't pretendふりをする to understandわかる this.
229
548000
2000
09:25
And I suspect容疑者 most最も geneticists遺伝学者 don't understandわかる it eitherどちらか,
230
550000
2000
09:27
but they produce作物 the numbers数字.
231
552000
2000
09:29
So you can actually実際に estimate推定 the population人口 sizeサイズ
232
554000
2000
09:31
basedベース on the diversity多様性 of the genetics遺伝学.
233
556000
2000
09:33
And Rusルス HoelzelHoelzel came来た up with an effective効果的な population人口 sizeサイズ:
234
558000
3000
09:36
8,200 animals動物.
235
561000
2000
09:38
That's it.
236
563000
2000
09:40
8,000 animals動物 in the world世界.
237
565000
2000
09:42
You're thinking考え, "That's just ridiculousばかげた. No way."
238
567000
2000
09:44
So Lesレス did a finer細かい study調査
239
569000
2000
09:46
and he found見つけた out it came来た out about 9,000.
240
571000
2000
09:48
And usingを使用して different異なる microsatellitesマイクロサテライト gave与えた the different異なる results結果.
241
573000
3000
09:51
But the average平均 of all these studies研究 came来た out --
242
576000
3000
09:54
the mean is about 5,000,
243
579000
2000
09:56
whichどの I personally個人的に don't believe,
244
581000
2000
09:58
but then I am a skeptic懐疑的な.
245
583000

10:00
But even if you tossトス a few少数 numbers数字 around,
246
585000
2000
10:02
you're probably多分 talking話す of an effective効果的な population人口 of about 20,000 animals動物.
247
587000
3000

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Simon Berrow - Marine biologist
Simon Berrow is a marine biologist dedicated to studying and preserving the basking shark.

Why you should listen

Born in Ireland, Simon Berrow has travelled the world's oceans studying albatrosses, seals, penguins, sharks, and more. A passionate scientist and lover of Ireland's natural heritage, he founded the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Irish Basking Shark Study Group.

He is also the inventor of "Simon's shark slime sampling system" -- a mop handle and oven cleaner -- which has proved to be the most effective way of collecting shark DNA for analysis.

The TEDxTalk was filmed at the Science Gallery in Dublin.
