ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kenneth Shinozuka - Smart product inventor
Kenneth Shinozuka designs smart products ... He's been doing so since he was in kindergarten.

Why you should listen

When he was six years old, a family friend of Kenneth Shinozuka fell down in the bathroom. The friend was ok -- but the incident inspired him to design a motion detection system that could be embedded in bathroom tiles. He never actually made one in real life (remember, he was only six) ... but he was hooked on both the promise of invention and the potential of technology.

Since then, Shinozuka has designed smart devices for his grandfather, who has Alzheimer's disease. One invention that caught the eye of both the media and awards programs such as the Google Science Fair: a pair of smart socks, designed to send an alert to a caregiver if a patient gets out of bed. In 2014, he won the $50,000 Scientific American Science in Action Award, while he was also a 2014 Davidson Fellow.

Over the past 12 years,
his condition got worse and worse,

Ao longo dos últimos 12 anos,
a sua condição foi piorando,
01:04
and his wandering in particular
caused my family a lot of stress.

e principalmente suas andanças
causaram muito estresse a minha família.
Minha tia, sua principal cuidadora,
01:07
My aunt, his primary caregiver,
21
55823
1479
01:09
really struggled to stay awake at night
to keep an eye on him,
22
57302
3047
lutava para ficar acordada
à noite, de olho nele,
01:12
and even then often failed
to catch him leaving the bed.
23
60349
2698
e mesmo assim, muitas vezes
não conseguiu vê-lo saindo.
01:15
I became really concerned
about my aunt's well-being
24
63047
2811
Eu fiquei muito preocupado
com o bem-estar da minha tia,
01:17
as well as my grandfather's safety.
25
65858
1741
bem como com a segurança do meu avô.
01:19
I searched extensively for a solution
that could help my family's problems,
26

3531
Eu procurei muito por uma solução
que ajudasse minha família,
01:23
but couldn't find one.
27
71130

mas não encontrei nenhuma.
01:24
Then, one night about two years ago,
28
72960
2733
Então, uma noite, há dois anos,
01:27
I was looking after my grandfather
and I saw him stepping out of the bed.
29
75693
3465
eu estava cuidando de meu avô
e o vi saindo da cama.
01:31
The moment his foot landed on the floor,
30
79158
1992
No momento em que seu pé tocou o chão,
eu pensei: "Por que não colocar um
sensor de pressão em seu calcanhar?"
01:33
I thought, why don't I put
a pressure sensor on the heel of his foot?
31
81150
3262
01:36
Once he stepped onto the floor
and out of the bed,
32
84412
2397
Uma vez que ele saia
da cama e pise no chão,
01:38
the pressure sensor would detect an
increase in pressure caused by body weight
33
86809
3707
o sensor de pressão detecta um aumento
de pressão causada pelo peso corporal
01:42
and then wirelessly send an audible alert
to the caregiver's smartphone.
34

e o sem fio envia um alerta sonoro

01:45
That way, my aunt could sleep
much better at night
35

2341
Assim, minha tia podia
dormir melhor à noite
01:48
without having to worry
about my grandfather's wandering.
36
96312
2690
sem ter que se preocupar
com as andanças do meu avô.
01:51
So now I'd like to perform
a demonstration of this sock.
37
99002
3932
Agora eu gostaria de realizar
uma demonstração desse meia.
01:57
Could I please have
my sock model on the stage?
38

Poderia por favor trazer
o meu modelo de meia ao palco?
02:00
Great.
39
108831

Ótimo.
02:04
So once the patient
steps onto the floor --
40

Então, uma vez que o paciente
pise no chão -
02:07
(Ringing) --
41

(Toque) -
02:09
an alert is sent
to the caregiver's smartphone.
42

ao smartphone do cuidador.
02:16
Thank you. (Applause)
43

Obrigado. (Aplausos)
Obrigado, modelo de meia.
02:18
Thank you, sock model.
44
126057
3168
02:24
So this is a drawing
of my preliminary design.
45
132045
2604
Este é um desenho
do meu projeto preliminar.
02:27
My desire to create
a sensor-based technology
46
135819
2622
Meu desejo de criar uma tecnologia
baseada em sensores
02:30
perhaps stemmed from my lifelong love
for sensors and technology.
47
138441
3528
talvez resulte de meu amor eterno
por sensores e tecnologia.
Quando eu tinha seis anos,
02:33
When I was six years old,
48
141979
1486
02:35
an elderly family friend
fell down in the bathroom
49
143465
2330
um idoso, amigo da família,
caiu no banheiro
02:37
and suffered severe injuries.
50
145795
1710
e sofreu ferimentos graves.
02:39
I became concerned
about my own grandparents
51
147505
2101
Eu fiquei preocupado com meus avós
e decidi inventar um sistema
de banheiro inteligente:
02:41
and decided to invent
a smart bathroom system.
52
149606
2352
02:43
Motion sensors would be installed
inside the tiles of bathroom floors
53
151958
3608
instalar sensores de movimento
nos azulejos dos pisos dos banheiros,
02:47
to detect the falls of elderly patients
whenever they fell down in the bathroom.
54
155566
3838
para detectar as quedas dos idosos
sempre que caíssem.
02:51
Since I was only six years old at the time
55
159404
2012
Só que, como eu tinha apenas seis anos
02:53
and I hadn't graduated
from kindergarten yet,
56
161416
2323
e ainda não tinha saído
do jardim de infância,
02:55
I didn't have the necessary resources and
tools to translate my idea into reality,
57
163739
4334
eu não tinha os recursos e as ferramentas
para traduzir a minha ideia em realidade,
03:00
but nonetheless, my research experience
58
168073
2633
porém, minha experiência de investigação
03:02
really implanted in me a firm desire
to use sensors to help the elderly people.
59
170706
4251
criou em mim o firme desejo de usar
sensores para ajudar os idosos.
03:06
I really believe that sensors can improve
the quality of life of the elderly.
60
174957
4616
Acredito que sensores podem melhorar
a qualidade de vida dos idosos.
03:12
When I laid out my plan, I realized
that I faced three main challenges:
61
180944
3481
Quando eu apresentei meu plano,
enfrentei três grandes desafios:
03:16
first, creating a sensor;
62
184425
1769
primeiro, criar um sensor;
03:18
second, designing a circuit;
63
186194
1579
segundo, projetar um circuito;
terceiro, criar um
aplicativo de smartphone.
03:19
and third, coding a smartphone app.
64
187773
1746
03:21
This made me realize that my project
was actually much harder to realize
65
189519
3408
Então percebi que o meu projeto era
bem mais difícil de realizar
03:24
than I initially had thought it to be.
66
192927
2055
do que eu inicialmente
pensava que fosse.
03:26
First, I had to create a wearable sensor
that was thin and flexible enough
67
194982
3494
Primeiro tive que criar um sensor
vestível, fino e flexível o suficiente
03:30
to be worn comfortably
on the bottom of the patient's foot.
68
198476
2761
para ficar confortável
na planta do pé do paciente.
03:33
After extensive research and testing
of different materials like rubber,
69
201237
3419
Após muita pesquisa e testes
com vários materiais, como borracha,
que percebi ser muito espessa
para ser usada na planta do pé,
03:36
which I realized was too thick to be worn
snugly on the bottom of the foot,
70
204656
3535
decidi imprimir um sensor de filme
03:40
I decided to print a film sensor
71
208191
1567
com partículas de tinta sensíveis
à pressão, eletricamente condutoras.
03:41
with electrically conductive
pressure-sensitive ink particles.
72
209758
2902
03:44
Once pressure is applied, the connectivity
between the particles increases.
73
212660
3576
Com a pressão aplicada, a conectividade
entre as partículas aumenta.
03:48
Therefore, I could design a circuit
that would measure pressure
74
216236
2964
Então, eu poderia projetar
um circuito para medir a pressão,
medindo a resistência elétrica.
03:51
by measuring electrical resistance.
75
219200
1767
03:53
Next, I had to design
a wearable wireless circuit,
76
221267
2759
Em seguida, tive que projetar
um circuito sem fio vestível,
03:56
but wireless signal transmission
consumes lots of power
77
224026
3312
mas a transmissão sem fio
consome muita energia
e requer baterias grandes e pesadas.
03:59
and requires heavy, bulky batteries.
78
227338
1763
04:01
Thankfully, I was able to find out
about the Bluetooth low energy technology,
79
229101
3627
Felizmente, eu descobri a tecnologia
Bluetooth de baixa energia,
04:04
which consumes very little power
and can be driven by a coin-sized battery.
80
232728
3523
que consome pouca energia e pode ser
conduzida por uma bateria pequena.
04:08
This prevented the system
from dying in the middle of the night.
81
236251
3629
Isto impediu o sistema
de desligar no meio da noite.
04:11
Lastly, I had to code a smartphone app
that would essentially transform
82
239880
3463
Por fim, eu desenvolvi
um aplicativo que transformaria
04:15
the care-giver's smartphone
into a remote monitor.
83
243343
2478
o smartphone do cuidador
em um monitor remoto.
04:17
For this, I had to expand upon
my knowledge of coding with Java and XCode
84
245821
3676
Para isso, eu tive que estudar
mais programação Java e XCode
04:21
and I also had to learn about how to code
for Bluetooth low energy devices
85
249497
3487
e também aprender a programar
dispositivos Bluetooth,
04:24
by watching YouTube tutorials
and reading various textbooks.
86
252984
2876
assistindo a tutoriais do YouTube
e lendo vários livros.
04:29
Integrating these components, I was able
to successfully create two prototypes,
87
257230
3789
Integrando esses componentes,
consegui criar com êxito dois protótipos:
04:33
one in which the sensor
is embedded inside a sock,
88
261019
2328
um em que o sensor
é colocado dentro de uma meia,
04:35
and another that's
a re-attachable sensor assembly
89
263347
2396
e outro que é um conjunto
de sensores reagrupados
que pode ser colado numa
superfície de contato
04:37
that can be adhered anywhere
that makes contact
90
265743
2206
04:39
with the bottom of the patient's foot.
91
267949
1833
com a planta do pé do paciente.
Eu testei o dispositivo
no meu avô por cerca de um ano,
04:41
I've tested the device on my grandfather
for about a year now,
92
269782
2900
04:44
and it's had a 100 percent success rate
93
272682
1911
e ele teve uma taxa de sucesso de 100%
04:46
in detecting the over 900
known cases of his wandering.
94
274593
3496
em detectar os mais de 900 casos
conhecidos de suas andanças.
04:50
Last summer, I was able
to beta test my device
95
278629
2423
No verão passado, eu testei meu aparelho
04:53
at several residential
care facilities in California,
96
281052
2546
em várias casas de repouso na Califórnia,
04:55
and I'm currently incorporating
the feedback
97
283598
2172
e estou utilizando os comentários deles
04:57
to further improve the device
into a marketable product.
98
285770
2963
para tornar o produto comercializável.
05:00
Testing the device on a number of patients
99
288733
2108
Testar o dispositivo em alguns pacientes
05:02
made me realize that I needed
to invent solutions
100
290841
2509
me fez perceber que eu
precisava inventar soluções
05:05
for people who didn't want
to wear socks to sleep at night.
101
293350
2885
para pessoas que não
querem usar meias para dormir.
