ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Angela Patton - Activist
Angela Patton is an ambassador for who she calls "at-promise" (as opposed to "at-risk") girls and a serial innovator.

Why you should listen

As the leader and CEO of Girls For A Change (GFAC), Angela Patton is committed to "preparing black girls for the world ... and the world for black Girls. Patton founded Camp Diva in Richmond, Virginia in 2004, to honor Diva Mstadi Smith-Roan, a five-year-old who died in a firearm accident earlier that year. That summer, Patton planned a two-week experience that gave Diva's mother an opportunity to share her motherly love with girls in need of a support system. The program grew and went national in October 2013, when Camp Diva merged with California-based Girls For A Change, a nonprofit through which 100 girls' groups throughout nation work together to envision and execute lasting change in their neighborhoods, cities or schools. In the summer of 2016, Patton lead her board and staff to retool the organization's focus and build a program structure to more accurately reflect GFAC's goal to work with black girls and to disseminate our programs using a specific, replicable approach.

Following the release of Patton's TED Talk describing a father-daughter dance for incarcerated dads and their "at-promise" girls, her work was featured on ABC World News, Inside Edition, NPR and This is Life Lisa Ling. She has spoken for corporations, at conferences on girls as well as colleges and universities throughout the country. When she isn't inspiring change, advocating gender equality and empowering girls, she enjoys festivals and concerts with her husband and motivator, Raymond Patton, and their loving children, Imhotep and Asani.

01:51
is that they alreadyallerede know what they need.

not only to surviveoverleve, but to thriveblomstre.
33
112015
5434
ikke bare for å overleve, men for å blomstre.
02:13
So we had a dancedanse,

Så vi hadde et ball,
02:17
and girlsjenter and theirderes fathersfedre camekom in multitudesfolkemengden.

De var staselig kledd.

De var tullete.
02:32
They really enjoyednøt eachHver other'sandres companyselskap.
40
136967
3221
De nøt virkelig hverandres selskap.
02:36
It was a hugeenorm successsuksess.
41
140188
2841
Det ble virkelig vellykket.
02:38
And the girlsjenter decidedbesluttet to make it an annualårlig eventbegivenhet.
42
143029
5211
02:44
So as the seasonssesonger changedendret,
43
148240
2592
Årstidene gikk,
02:46
and it was time to planplan the dancedanse again,
44
150832
2720
02:49
one girlpike namedoppkalt BriannaBrianna spokesnakket up,
45
153552
3107
02:52
and she said,
46
156659
2190
og hun sa
02:54
"My dadpappa can't come to the dancedanse,
47
158849
2746
"Faren min kan ikke komme,
02:57
and this wholehel thing is makinglager me sadlei seg."
48
161595
4237
og jeg blir lei meg av alt det her."
03:01
"Why not?" the girlsjenter askedspurte.
49
165832
3008
"Hvorfor ikke?" spurte de andre jentene.
03:04
"Because he's in jailfengsel," she bravelytappert admittedinnrømmet.
50
168840
4680
"Fordi han sitter inne," var hun modig og innrømte.
03:09
"Well, can he just get out for a day?" one of the girlsjenter askedspurte. (LaughterLatter)
51
173520
4934
"Kan han ikke bare slippe ut den ene dagen?" spurte en av jentene. (Latter)
03:14
"And come in shacklessjakler?
52
178454
3178
"Og komme i lenker?
03:17
That's worseverre than not havingha him here at all."
53
181632
4345
03:21
At this momentøyeblikk, I saw an opportunitymulighet
54
185977
4418
Det var da jeg så en mulighet
03:26
for the girlsjenter to risestige to the occasionanledning
55
190395
2926
for jentene til å ta utfordringen
03:29
and to becomebli theirderes ownegen heroeshelter.
56
193321
2764
og bli sine egne helter.
03:31
So I askedspurte, "What do you think we should do about this?
57
196085
4673
03:36
We want everyhver girlpike to experienceerfaring the dancedanse, right?"
58
200758
5250
03:41
So the girlsjenter thought for a momentøyeblikk,
59
206008
1663
Så jentene tenkte en stund,
03:43
and one girlpike suggestedforeslått,
60
207671
2309
så foreslo en av dem,
03:45
"Why don't we just take the dancedanse in the jailfengsel?"
61
209980
4306
"Hvorfor ikke bare ha det i fengselet?"
03:50
MostDe fleste of the girlsjenter doubtedtvil the possibilitymulighet of that,
62
214286
3816
03:54
and said, "Are you crazygal?
63
218102
2794
og sa "Er du sprø?
03:56
Who is going to allowtillate a bunchgjeng of little girlsjenter,
64
220896
3008
Hvem vil tillatte masse småjenter,
03:59
dressedkledd up — " (LaughterLatter)
65
223904
2464
som har pyntet seg --" (Latter)
04:02
" — to come insideinnsiden a jailfengsel and dancedanse with theirderes daddiesDaddies in SpongebobSpongeBob suitspasser?"
66
226368
5587
"-- å komme i fengsel for å danse med fedrene sine i Svampebob-kostymer?"
04:07
Because that's what they calledkalt them.
67
231955
3348
For det var det de kalte det.
04:11
I said, "GirlsJenter, well, well,
68
235303
4158
Jeg sa, "Jenter, ja, ja,
04:15
you never know unlessmed mindre you askspørre."
69
239461
4003
du vet ikke før du har spurt.
04:19
So a letterbrev was writtenskrevet to the RichmondRichmond CityByen SheriffSheriff,
70
243464
4440
04:23
signedtegnet collectivelysamlet by eachHver girlpike,
71
247904
3819
underskrevet av hver enkelt av jentene,
04:27
and I would have to say, he is a very specialspesiell sheriffSheriff.
72
251723
5406
04:33
He contactedkontaktet me immediatelymed en gang and said,
73
257129
4933
04:37
whenevernår som helst there is an opportunitymulighet to bringbringe familiesfamilier insideinnsiden,
74
262062
5954
04:43
his doorsdører are always openåpen.
75
268016
3172
så er hans dør alltid åpen.
04:47
Because one thing he did know,
76
271188
2325
Fordi var det en ting han visste,
04:49
that when fathersfedre are connectedtilkoblet to theirderes childrenbarn,
77
273513
3327
04:52
it is lessmindre likelysannsynlig that they will returnkomme tilbake.
78
276840
4963
var det mindre sjanse for at de kom tilbake.
04:57
So,
79
281803
2081
Så,
04:59
16 inmatesinnsatte and 18 girlsjenter were invitedinvitert.
80
283884
5854
16 innsatte og 18 jenter var invitert.
05:05
The girlsjenter were dressedkledd in theirderes SundaySøndag bestbeste,
81
289738
3649
Jentene var kledd i sine fineste søndagssklær,
05:09
and the fathersfedre tradedhandlet in theirderes yellowgul and blueblå jumpsuitsjumpsuits
82
293387
5029
og fedrene byttet inn sine gule og blå overaller
05:14
for shirtsskjorter and tiesslips.
83
298416
4504
med skjorte og slips.
05:18
They huggedklemte.
84
302920
2371
De klemte hverandre.
05:21
They shareddelt a fullfull cateredse mealmåltid of chickenkylling and fishfisk.
85
305291
4751
05:25
They laughedLO togethersammen.
86
310042
3725
De lo sammen.
05:29
It was beautifulvakker.
87
313767
4408
Det var vakkert.
05:34
The fathersfedre and daughtersdøtre even experiencedopplevde
88
318175
4241
05:38
an opportunitymulighet to have a physicalfysisk connectionforbindelse,
89
322416
4075
muligheten til fysisk kontakt,
05:42
something that a lot of them didn't even have
90
326491
2729
noe mange av dem ikke hadde hatt
05:45
for a while.
91
329220
1232
på en god stund.
05:46
FathersFedre were in a spacerom where they were ablei stand to
92
330452
4411
Fedrene fikk muligheten til å
05:50
make theirderes daughtersdøtre playspille,
93
334863
2713
hjelpe sine døtre å leke,
05:53
and pulldra out her chairstol and extendforlenge his handhånd for a dancedanse.
94
337576
6249
05:59
Even the guardsvaktene criedgråt.
95
343825
3677
Selv vaktene gråt.
06:03
But after the dancedanse,
96
347502
2720
Men etterpå,
06:06
we all realizedrealisert that DadPappa still would be in jailfengsel.
97
350222
5560
06:11
So we neededbehov for to createskape something
98
355782
3093
06:14
that they could take with them.
99
358875
1758
de kunne ta med seg.
06:16
So we broughtbrakte med seg in FlipVend camscams,
100
360633
2615
Vi tok med små videokameraer.
06:19
and we had them look at the FlipVend camscams
101
363248
2741
Og vi ba dem se på videokameraene
06:21
and just interviewintervju eachHver other --
102
365989
1728
og bare intervjue hverandre --
06:23
theirderes messagesmeldinger, theirderes thoughtstanker.
103
367717
3714
det de ville fortelle, deres tanker.
06:27
This was going to be used as a touchstoneTouchstone
104
371431
3183
Det ville være et felles bånd
06:30
so when they startedstartet to missgå glipp av eachHver other
105
374614
2416
06:32
and feel disconnectedfrakoblet,
106
377030
2300
06:35
they could reconnectkoble throughgjennom this imagebilde.
107
379330
3364
06:38
I'll never forgetglemme that one girlpike looked in her father'sfars eyesøyne
108
382694
5382
06:43
with that camerakamera and said,
109
388076
1320
tok kamera og sa,
06:45
"DaddyPappa, when you look at me, what do you see?"
110
389396
6710
"Pappa, når du ser på meg, hva ser du?"
06:52
Because our daddiesDaddies are our mirrorsspeilene
111
396106
4088
Fordi fedrene våre er våre speil
06:56
that we reflectreflektere back on
112
400194
2422
som reflekterer tilbake mot oss
06:58
when we decideBestemme seg for about what typetype of man we deservefortjene,
113
402616

07:03
and how they see us for the resthvile of our livesbor.
114
407386
3591
07:06
I know that very well,
115
410977
3545
Jeg vet det ekstra godt,
07:10
because I was one of the luckyheldig girlsjenter.
116
414522
2401
07:12
I have had
117
416923
2259
Jeg hadde
07:18
my fatherfar in my life always.
118
422798
6007
alltid faren min i livet mitt.
07:24
He's even here todayi dag.
119
428805

Han er til og med her i dag.
07:26
(ApplauseApplaus)
120
430685
9037
(Applaus)
07:35
And that is why it is extremelyekstremt specialspesiell
121
439722
3978
07:39
for me to make sure that these girlsjenter
122
443700
3244
å sørge for at disse jentene
07:42
are connectedtilkoblet to theirderes fathersfedre,
123
446944
2530
er knyttet til sine fedre,
07:45
especiallyspesielt those who are separatedseparert
124
449474
2909
særlig de som er fra hverandre
07:48
because of barbedbarbed wiresledninger and metalmetall doorsdører.
125

på grunn av piggtråd og metalldører.
07:53
We have just createdopprettet a formskjema
126
457269
3093
Vi har bare laget en mulighet
07:56
for girlsjenter who have heavytung questionsspørsmål on theirderes hearthjerte
127
460362
3383
07:59
to be in a positionposisjon to askspørre theirderes fathersfedre those questionsspørsmål
128
463745
4492
08:04
and givengitt the fathersfedre the freedomfrihet to answersvar.
129
468237
4767
08:08
Because we know that the fathersfedre
130
473004
3345
Fordi vi vet at fedrene
08:12
are even leavingforlater with this one thought:
131
476349
3248
også sitter igjen med denne ene tanken:
08:15
What typetype of womankvinne am I preparingforbereder to put in the worldverden?
132
479597
5369
08:20
Because a fatherfar is lockedlåst in
133
484966
3417
At en far er innelåst
08:24
does not mean he should be lockedlåst out
134
488383
3050
betyr ikke at de skal stenges ute
08:27
