Jean-Paul Mari: The chilling aftershock of a brush with death

Filmed:

If you want to write,
you need to put it all aside在旁边."
57
187097
2449
03:21
And that's what I did.
58
189570
1215
03:22
I went upstairs楼上, wrote
my article文章 and sent发送 it off.
59
190809
2904
03:27
Later后来, aside在旁边 from the feeling感觉
of having lost丢失 my colleagues同事,
60
195077
3921
03:31
something else其他 was bothering困扰 me.
61
199895
2523
03:34
I kept不停 seeing眼看 that shiny闪亮, pearly珍珠的 spot,
62
202442
3767
03:40
and I couldn't不能 understand理解 what it meant意味着.
63
208735
2388
03:43
And then, the war战争 was over.
64
211731
2515
03:48
Later后来, I thought: "That's not possible可能.
I can't just not know what happened发生."
65
216572
6096
03:54
Because it wasn't the first time,
and it didn't only happen发生 to me.
66
222692
3461
03:58
I have seen看到 things like that
happen发生 to others其他
67
226177
3905
04:02
in my 20 to 35 years年份 of reporting报告.
68
230106
2668
04:04
I have seen看到 things
that had an effect影响 on me too.
69
232798
3286
04:08
For example, there was this man
I knew知道 in Lebanon黎巴嫩,
70
236108
3045
04:11
a 25-year-old-岁 veteran老将
who had been fighting战斗 for five years年份 --
71
239177
2906
04:14
a real真实 veteran老将 -- who we would
04:16
He would crawl爬行 in the dark黑暗
with confidence置信度 --
73
244474
3486
04:20
he was a great soldier士兵, a true真正 soldier士兵 --
74
248731
2412
04:23
so we would follow跟随 him,
knowing会心 that we would be safe安全 with him.
75
251167
3357
04:26
And one day, as I was told --
76
254548
2308
04:28
and I've seen看到 him again since以来 --
77
256880
1596
04:30
he was back in the camp, playing播放 cards,
78
258500
2341
04:32
when someone有人 came来了 in next下一个 door,
79
260865
1881
04:36
and discharged出院 their weapon武器.
80
264158
2136
04:38
As the gun went off,
81
266318
1508
04:39
that blast爆破, that one shot射击,
made制作 him duck quickly很快 under the table,
82
267850
5555
04:46
like a child儿童.
83
274204
1214
04:47
He was shaking发抖, panicking恐慌.
84
275442
1891
04:49
And since以来 then, he has never
been able能够 to get up and fight斗争.
85
277357
4808
04:54
He ended结束 up working加工 as a croupier赌场上的总管人
86
282189
2692
04:56
in a Beirut贝鲁特 casino赌场
where I later后来 found发现 him,
87
284905
2122
04:59
because he couldn't不能 sleep睡觉,
so it was quite相当 a suitable适当 job工作.
88
287051
2869
05:02
So I thought to myself,
89
290378
1817
05:04
"What is this thing that can kill you
90
292957
2261
05:08
without leaving离开
any visible可见 scars伤疤?
91
296035
4557
05:12
How does that happen发生?
92
300974
1983
05:16
What is this unknown未知 thing?"
93
304040
2000
05:19
It was too common共同 to be coincidental巧合.
94
307206
4367
05:23
So I started开始 to investigate调查 --
95
311597
1658
05:25
that's all I know how to do.
96
313279
1994
05:27
I started开始 to investigate调查
97
315297
1843
05:29
by looking through通过 books图书,
98
317164
2547
05:32
reaching到达 out to psychiatrists精神科医生,
99
320836
2342
05:38
Finally最后, I discovered发现
that some people knew知道 about this --
101
326224
4099
05:44
and that what we were dealing交易 with
was called trauma外伤.
103
332904
4889
05:49
Americans美国人 call it PTSDPTSD
05:54
It was something
105
342667
1865
05:58
that existed存在,
106
346262
1396
06:00
but that we never spoke about.
107
348206
2182
06:04
So, this trauma
108
352206
1404
06:06
what is it?
109
354452
1157
06:07
Well, it's an encounter遭遇 with death死亡.
110
355633
2811
06:11
I don't know if you've ever had
an experience经验 with death死亡 --
111
359126
2802
06:13
I'm not talking about dead bodies身体,
112
361952
1883
06:15
or someone's谁家 grandfather祖父
lying说谎 in a hospital醫院 bed,
113
363859
3601
06:19
or someone有人 who got hit击中 by a car汽车.
114
367484
3574
06:24
I'm talking about facing面对
the void空虚 of death死亡.
115
372134
4460
06:29
And that is something
no one is supposed应该 to see.
116
377688
6173
06:35
People used to say,
117
383885
1842
can be looked看着 at with a steady稳定 eye."
118
385751
3975
06:41
A human人的 being存在 should not
have to face面对 the void空虚 of death死亡.
119
389750
4234
06:46
But when that happens发生,
120
394008
1841
06:49
it can remain invisible无形 for a while --
121
397801
3748
06:53
days, weeks, months个月, sometimes有时 years年份.
122
401573
2768
06:56
And then, at some point,
123
404365
1761
06:59
it explodes爆炸,
124
407587
1286
07:00
because it's something
that has entered进入 your brain --
125
408897
3744
07:04
a sort分类 of window窗口 between之间 an image图片
and your mind心神 --
126
412665
4651
07:09
that has penetrated渗透 your brain,
127
417340
2325
07:11
staying there and taking服用 up
all the space空间 inside.
128
419689
4590
07:17
And there are people --
07:20
who suddenly突然 no longer sleep睡觉.
130
428858
2638
07:24
And they experience经验

131
432376
2345

07:29
They suddenly突然 don't want to sleep睡觉,
133
437799
2306
07:32
because when they do, they have
the same相同 nightmare恶梦 every一切 night.
134
440129
4534
07:36
They see the same相同 image图片 every一切 night.
135
444687
1920
07:38
What type类型 of image图片?
136
446631
1627
07:40
For example, a soldier士兵
who enters进入 a building建造
137
448282
2803
07:43
and comes face面对 to face面对

07:45
He looks容貌 at the gun,
straight直行 down the barrel.
139

07:48
And this barrel suddenly
