ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Michael Moschen - Juggler
Quite simply, Michael Moschen has revolutionized juggling, refining it into an art and a bit of a science. With a few flying balls and well-chosen props he will completely re-wire your notions of the physically possible.

Why you should listen

A high school dropout turned MacArthur "genius grant" recipient, Michael Moschen is an art juggler, spawning scores of imitators and an entire methodology of crystal-ball juggling he likes to call Dynamic Manipulation. (The previously mentioned imitators call it "Contact Juggling," a term that Moschen himself despises.)

With a penchant for discipline, choreography, and catching flying balls -- and using props that include flaming torches, hoops, rods, and a ten-foot plastic triangle enclosure within which he stands, bouncing balls against the sides to achieve incredible patterns and velocities -- he creates illusions of speed and light that push the envelope of what is possible within this age-old circus art. Many of his techniques and routines are showcased in In Motion with Michael Moschen, a program produced in 1991 for National Public Television's Great Performances series.

I started开始 juggling戏法 a long time ago,
0
1000
2000
00:21
but long before that, I was a golfer高尔夫球手, and that's what I was, a golfer高尔夫球手.
1
3000
5000
00:27
And as a golfer高尔夫球手 and as a kid孩子,
2
9000
4000
00:31
one of the things that really sort分类 of seeped里透 into my pores毛孔,
3
13000
3000
00:34
that I sort分类 of lived生活 my whole整个 life, is process处理.
4
16000
3000
00:37
And it's the process处理 of learning学习 things.
5
19000
2000
00:39
One of the great things was that my father父亲 was an avid狂热 golfer高尔夫球手, but he was lefty左撇子.
6
21000
4000
00:43
And he had a real真实 passion for golf高尔夫球,
7
25000
2000
00:45
and he also created创建 this whole整个 mythology神话
8
27000
3000
00:48
about Ben Hogan霍根 and various各个 things.
9
30000
2000
00:50
Well, I learned学到了 a lot about interesting有趣 things
10
32000
2000
00:52
that I knew知道 nothing about at the time, but grew成长 to know stuff东东 about.
11
34000
4000
00:56
And that was the mythology神话 of skill技能.
12
38000
3000
00:59
So, one of the things that I love to do is to explore探索 skill技能.
13
41000
3000
01:02
And since以来 Richard理查德 put me on this whole整个 thing with music音乐 --
14
44000
4000
01:06
I'm supposed应该 to actually其实 be doing a project项目 with Tod MachoverMachover
15
48000
3000
01:09
with the MITMIT Media媒体 Lab实验室 -- it relates涉及 a lot to music音乐.
16
51000
2000
01:11
But Tod couldn't不能 come and the project项目 is sort分类 of somewhere某处,
17
53000
3000
01:14
I'm not sure whether是否 it's happening事件 the way we thought, or not.
18
56000
3000
01:17
But I'm going to explore探索 skill技能, and juggling戏法,
19
59000
4000
01:21
and basically基本上 visual视觉 music音乐, I guess猜测.
20
63000
6000
01:28
OK, you can start开始 the music音乐, thanks谢谢.
21
70000
2000
01:30
(Music
22
72000
178000
04:28
(Applause
23
250000
3000
04:31
Thanks谢谢. Thank you. Now, juggling戏法 can be a lot of fun开玩笑;
24
253000
8000
04:40
play with skill技能 and play with space空间, play with rhythm韵律.
25
262000
4000
04:44
And you can turn the mike麦克风 on now. I'm going to do a couple一对 of pieces.
26
266000
3000
04:47
I do a big piece in a triangle三角形
27
269000
3000
04:50
and these are three sections部分 from it.
28
272000
2000
04:52
Part部分 of the challenge挑战 was to try to understand理解 rhythm韵律 and space空间
29
274000
3000
04:55
using运用 not just my hands -- because a lot of juggling戏法 is hand-oriented手为本 --
30
277000
4000
04:59
but using运用 the rhythm韵律 of my body身体 and feet,
31
281000
2000
05:01
and controlling控制 the balls with my feet.
32
283000
2000
06:22
(Applause
33
364000
3000
06:27
Thanks谢谢. Now, this next下一个 section部分 was an attempt尝试 to explore探索 space空间.
34
369000
8000
06:35
You see, I think Richard理查德 said something about people that are against反对 something.
35
377000
4000
06:39
Well, a lot of people think jugglers杂耍 defy违抗 gravity重力 or do stuff东东.
36
381000
6000
06:45
Well, I kind of, from my childhood童年 and golf高尔夫球 and all that,
37
387000
3000
06:48
it's a process处理 of joining加盟 with forces军队.
38
390000
3000
06:51
And so what I'd like to do is try to figure数字 out
39
393000
1000
06:52
how to join加入 with the space空间 through通过 the technique技术.
40
394000
3000
06:55
So juggling戏法 gravity重力 -- up, down.
41
397000
5000
07:00
If you figure数字 out what up and down really are,
42
402000
4000
07:07
it's a complex复杂 physical物理 set of skills技能
43
409000
2000
07:09
to be able能够 to throw a ball down and up and everything,
44
411000
3000
07:12
but then you add in sideways侧身.
45
414000
2000
07:37
(Applause
46
439000
5000
07:43
Now, I look at it somewhat有些 as a way -- when you learn学习 juggling戏法
47
445000
5000
07:48
what you learn学习 is how to feel with your eyes眼睛, and see with your hands
48
450000
4000
07:52
because you're not looking at your hands,
49
454000
2000
07:54
you're looking at where the balls are or you're looking at the audience听众.
50
456000
3000
07:57
So this next下一个 part部分 is really a way of understanding理解 space空间 and rhythm韵律,
51
459000
5000
08:02
with the obvious明显 reference参考 to the feet,
52
464000
2000
08:04
but it's also time -- where the feet were, where the balls were.
53
466000
5000
09:25
(Applause
54
547000
10000
09:35
Thanks谢谢. So, visual视觉 music音乐: rhythm韵律 and complexity复杂.
55
557000
5000
09:40
I'm going to build建立 towards complexity复杂 now.
56
562000
2000
09:42
Juggling戏法 three balls is simple简单 and normal正常.
57
564000
4000
09:46
(Laughter
58
568000
2000
09:48
Excuse借口 me.
59
570000
2000
09:50
(Laughter
60
572000
2000
09:52
We're jugglers杂耍, OK. And remember记得, you're transposing移调,
61
574000
3000
09:55
you're getting得到 into a subculture亚文化 here.
62
577000
2000
09:57
(Laughter
63
579000
1000
09:58
And juggling戏法 -- the balls cross交叉 and all that.
64
580000
3000
10:01
OK, if you keep them in their assigned分配 paths路径 you get parallel平行 lines线
65
583000
4000
10:05
of different不同 heights高度, but then hopefully希望 even rhythm韵律.
66
587000
3000
10:08
And you can change更改 the rhythm韵律 -- good, Michael迈克尔.
67
590000
4000
10:12
You can change更改 the rhythm韵律, if you get out of the lights灯火.
68
594000
2000
10:14
OK? Change更改 the rhythm韵律, so it's even.
69
596000
4000
10:18
Or you can go back and change更改 the height高度. Now, skill技能.
70
600000
6000
10:24
But you're boxed盒装 in, if you can only do it up and down that way.
71
606000
4000
10:28
So, you've got to go after the space空间 down there.
72
610000
3000
10:37
OK, then you've got to combine结合 them,
73
619000
3000
10:40
because then you have the whole整个 spatial空间的 palette调色板 in front面前 of you.
74
622000
4000
10:49
And then you get crazy.
75
631000
2000
10:59
(Applause
76
641000
4000
11:03
Now, I'm actually其实 going to ask you to try something,
77
645000
4000
11:07
so you've got to pay工资 attention注意. Complexity复杂:
78
649000
3000
11:10
if you spend enough足够 time doing something, time slows减缓 down
79
652000
4000
11:14
or your skill技能 increases增加, so your perceptions看法 change更改.
80
656000
3000
11:17
It's learning学习 skills技能 -- like being存在 in a high-speed高速 car汽车 crash紧急.
81
659000
4000
11:21
Things slow down as you learn学习, as you learn学习, as you learn学习.
82
663000
3000
11:24
You may可能 not be able能够 to affect影响 it, it almost几乎 drifts漂移 on you. It goes.
83
666000
4000
11:28
But that's the closest最近的 approximation近似 I can have to it.
84
670000
3000
11:31
So, complexity复杂. Now, how many许多 here are jugglers杂耍?
85
673000
5000
11:37
OK, so most of you are going to have a similar类似 reaction反应 to this.
86
679000
4000
11:48
OK? And whoever laughed笑了 there --
87
690000
2000
11:50
you understood了解 it completely全然, right?
88
692000
2000
11:52
(Laughter
89
694000
1000
笑声
11:54
No, it looks容貌 like a mess食堂. It looks容貌 like a mess食堂 with a guy there,
90
696000
3000
11:57
who's谁是 got his hands around that mess食堂, OK.
91
699000
3000
12:00
Well, that's what juggling戏法 is about, right?
92
702000
2000
12:02
It's being存在 able能够 to do something that other people can't do or can't understand理解.
93
704000
4000
12:06
All right. So, that's one way of doing it, which哪一个 is five balls down.
94
708000
3000
12:09
OK? Another另一个 way is the outside.
95
711000
3000
12:14
And you could play with the rhythm
96
716000
2000
12:21
Make it faster更快 and smaller.
98
723000
2000
12:24
Make it wider
99
726000
2000
更宽
12:27
Make it narrower.
100
729000
2000
12:32
Bring带来 it back up.
101
734000
2000
12:35
OK. It's doneDONE. Thanks
102
737000
3000
12:38
(Applause
103
740000
2000
12:41
Now, what I wanted to get to is that you're all very bright, very tactile.
104
743000
7000
12:48
I have no idea理念 how computer-oriented面向计算机 or three-dimensionally-oriented三维导向 you are,
105
750000
5000
12:53
but let's try something.
106
755000
2000
12:55
OK, so since以来 you all don't understand理解 what the five-ball五球 pattern模式 is,
107
757000
6000
13:01
I'm going to give you a little clue线索.
108
763000
2000
13:14
Enough足够 of a clue线索? So, you get the pattern模式, right? OK.
109
776000
4000
13:18
(Laughter
110
780000
2000
笑声
13:21
You're not getting得到 off that easy简单. All right?
111
783000
4000
13:26
Now, do me a favor偏爱: follow跟随 the ball that I ask you to follow跟随.
112
788000
4000

OK, you can do that? Yeah? OK.
117
802000
3000
。很好
13:43
Now, let's actually其实 learn学习 something.
118
805000
3000
13:46
Actually其实, let me put you in that area of learning学习, which哪一个 is very insecure不安全.
119
808000
5000
13:51
You want to do it? Yeah? OK.
120
813000
3000
13:55
Hands out in front面前 of you. Palms棕榈 up, together一起.
121
817000

14:00
What you're going to learn学习 is this.
122
822000
3000
14:03
(Laughter
123
825000
2000
笑声
14:05
OK? So what I want you to do is just listen to me and do it.
124

(Laughter

3000
15:10
and you're getting得到 this. OK?
145
892000

149
902000
2000
15:22
But I want you to do is also, with your eyes
150
904000
3000
15:25
is follow跟随 the colored有色 ball that I ask you to follow跟随.

15:36
and I'm also going to tell you to go with your fingers手指. OK?
156
918000
2000
15:38
So white白色 ball and --
157
920000
2000
Pink.

16:02
All right.
163
944000
2000
笑声
16:04
(Applause
164
946000
3000
掌声
16:07
How did you do? Well? OK. The reason原因 I wanted you to do this is
165
949000
5000
16:12
because that's actually其实 what most people face面对 throughout始终 their lives生活,
166
954000
5000
16:17
a moment时刻 of learning学习, a moment时刻 of challenge挑战.
167
959000
3000
16:20
It's a moment时刻 that you can't make sense of.
168
962000
2000
16:22
Why the hell地狱 should I learn学习 this? OK?
169
964000
3000
16:25
Does it really have anything to do with anything in my life?
170
967000
3000
16:29
You know, I can't decipher解码 -- is it fun开玩笑? Is it challenging具有挑战性的? Am I supposed应该 to cheat作弊?
171
971000
3000
16:32
(Laughter
172
974000
1000
笑声
16:33
You know, what are you supposed应该 to do?
173
975000
2000
16:35
You've got somebody up here who is the operative手术 principle原理
174
977000
4000
16:39
of doing that for his whole整个 life. OK?
175
981000
3000
16:42
Trying to figure数字 that stuff东东 out. But is it going to get you anywhere随地?
176
984000
3000
16:45
It's just a moment时刻. That's all it is, a moment时刻. OK?
177
987000
3000
16:48
I'm going to change更改 the script脚本 for one second第二. Just let me do this.
178
990000
3000
16:51
I don't need music音乐 for it. Talking about time in a moment时刻.
179
993000
3000
16:54
There's a piece that I recently最近 developed发达 which哪一个 was all about that,
180
996000
4000
16:58
a moment时刻. And what I do as a creative创作的 artist艺术家
181
1000000
3000
17:01
is I develop发展 vocabularies词汇 or languages语言 of moving移动 objects对象.
182
1003000
4000
17:05
What I've doneDONE for you here, I developed发达 a lot of those tricks技巧
183
1007000
3000
17:08
and I put the choreography编舞 together一起,
184
1010000
2000
17:10
but they're not original原版的 techniques技术.
185
1012000
2000
17:12
Now, I'm going to start开始 showing展示 you some original原版的 techniques技术
186
1014000
2000
17:14
that come from the work that I've developed发达. OK?
187
1016000
2000
17:16
So, a moment时刻, how would you define确定 a moment时刻?
188
1018000
3000
17:19
Well, as a juggler变戏法, what I wanted to do was create创建 something
189
1021000
5000
17:24
that was representational代表性 of a moment时刻.
190
1026000
5000
17:30
Ahhh
191
1032000
3000
17:33
All right, I'm going to get on my knees膝盖 and do it.
192
1035000
3000
17:36
So, a moment
193
1038000
2000
17:38
(Rattling
194
1040000
7000
17:45
OK? And then, what I did as a juggler变戏法 was say,
195
1047000
3000
17:48
OK, what can I do to make that something
196
1050000
2000
17:50
that is dependent依赖的 on something else其他, another另一个 dynamic动态.
197
1052000
4000
17:59
(Rattling
198
1061000
9000
18:09
So, a moment
199
1071000
4000
18:13
(Rattling
200
1075000
2000
18:15
18:17
(Rattling
202
1079000
6000
18:23
Excuse借口 me, still getting得到 there. A moment时刻 that travels旅行.
203
1085000
5000
18:28
(Rattling
204
1090000
5000
18:34
A moment时刻 -- no, we'll try that again. It separates中隔离, and comes back together一起.
205
1096000
7000
18:41
Time. How can you look at time?
206
1103000
3000
18:44
And what do you dedicate奉献 it to, in exploring探索 a particular特定 thing?
207
1106000
4000
18:48
Well, obviously明显, there's something in here,
208
1110000
3000
18:51
and you can all have a guess猜测 as to what it is.
209
1113000
2000
18:53
There's a mystery神秘. There's a mystery神秘 in the moment时刻.
210
1115000
2000
18:55
And it has to settle解决. And then it's dependent依赖的 on something else其他.
211
1117000
4000
18:59
And then it comes to rest休息. Just a little thing about time.
212
1121000
8000
19:07
Now, this has expanded扩大 into a much bigger piece,
213
1129000
2000
19:09
because I use ramps坡道 of different不同 parabolas抛物线 that I roll the balls on
214
1131000
3000
19:12
while I'm keeping保持 time with this.
215
1134000
2000
19:14
But I just thought I'd talk about a moment
216
1136000
2000
19:17
(Applause
217
1139000
3000
掌声
19:20
All right. OK. Can we show显示 the video视频 of the triangle三角形?
218
1142000
6000
19:26
Are we ready准备 to do that? Yes?
219
1148000
2000
19:28
This is the piece that I told you about.
220
1150000
2000
19:30
It's a much bigger piece that I do exploring探索 the space空间 of a geometric几何 triangle三角形.
221
1152000
4000
20:29
(Applause
222
1211000
4000
掌声
20:34
Thanks谢谢. The only thing I'll say about the last session会议 is,
223
1216000
4000
20:38
you ever try juggling戏法 and driving主动 the car汽车 with your knees膝盖
224
1220000
4000
20:42
at 120 miles英里 an hour小时?
225
1224000
2000
20:44
(Laughter
226
1226000
2000
笑声
20:46
The only other thing is, it was a real真实 shock休克.
227
1228000
2000
20:48
I always drove开车 motorcycles摩托车. And when I bought my first car汽车, it shocked吃惊 me
228
1230000
4000
20:52
that it cost成本 three times more than my parents'父母' house. Interesting有趣.
229
1234000
5000
20:59
constant不变 movement运动 to find an approach途径 to stillness寂静.
231
1241000
6000
21:06
Cheating
232
1248000
1000
21:07
(Laughter
233
1249000
2000
笑声
21:10
Balance平衡: making制造 up the rules规则 so you can't cheat作弊,
234
1252000
4000
21:14
so you learn学习 to approach途径 stillness寂静 with different不同 parts部分 of your body身体.
235
1256000
10000
21:25
To have a conversation会话 with it. To speak说话. To listen.
236
1267000
10000
21:35
(Laughter
237
1277000
1000
笑声
21:36
Hup. Now, it's dependent依赖的 on rhythm韵律,
238
1278000
3000
21:39
and keeping保持 a center中央 of balance平衡. When it falls下降, going underneath.
239
1281000
7000
21:47
So, there's a rhythm韵律 to it.
240
1289000
2000
21:51
The rhythm韵律 can get much smaller.
241
1293000
2000
22:01
As your skill技能 increases增加, you learn学习 to find those tinier更细小 spaces空间,
242
1303000
5000
22:11
(Applause
244
1313000
3000
掌声
22:15
Now, I'm going to show显示 you the beginnings开始 of a piece
245
1317000
2000
22:17
that is about balance平衡 in some ways方法, and also --
246
1319000
6000
22:24
oh, actually其实, if you're bored无聊, not here, here's这里的 one use for it.
247
1326000
6000
22:30
(Laughter
248
1332000
9000
笑声
22:40
You can go with the "Sticks One" music
249
1342000
3000
22:47
(Music
250
1349000
84000
音乐
24:11
(Applause
251
1433000
7000
掌声
24:18
Thanks谢谢. That has a certain某些 kind of balance平衡 to it, which哪一个 is all about plumb垂直.
252
1440000
6000
24:24
I apprenticed学徒 with a carpenter木匠 and learned学到了 about plumb垂直, square广场 and level水平.
253
1446000
6000
24:30
And they influenced影响 that, and this next下一个 piece, which哪一个 I'll do a little segment分割 of.
254
1452000
3000
24:33
"Two Sticks," you can go with it. Thanks
255
1455000
3000
24:39
Which哪一个 is again exploring探索 space空间, or the lines线 in space空间.
256
1461000
4000
24:43
(Music
257
1465000
61000
音乐
25:44
(Applause
258
1526000
2000
掌声
25:46
Working加工 with space空间 and the lines线 in space空间 in a different不同 way.
259
1528000
7000
25:54
Oh, let's see here.
260
1536000
2000
26:27
(Applause
261
1569000
1000
掌声
26:29
So, I'll come back to that in a second第二. But working加工 with one ball,
262
1571000
5000
26:34
now, what if you attach连接 something to it, or change更改 it.
263
1576000
6000
26:41
This is a little thing that I made制作
264
1583000
2000
26:43
because I really like the idea理念 of curves曲线 and balls together一起.
265
1585000
5000
26:49
And then creating创建 space空间 and the rhythm韵律 of space空间,
266
1591000
6000
26:55
using运用 the surface表面 of the balls, the surface表面 of the arms武器.
267
1597000
4000
27:00
Just a little toy玩具. Which哪一个 leads引线 me to the next下一个 thing,
268
1602000
4000
27:04
which哪一个 is --
269
1606000
2000
27:06
what have I got here? OK. All right.
270
1608000
7000
27:19
I'm actually其实 leading领导 up to something,
271
1621000
1000
27:20
the newest最新 thing that I'm working加工 on. This is not it.
272
1622000
4000
27:24
This is exploring探索 geometry几何 and the rhythm韵律 of shape形状.
273
1626000
3000
28:13
(Applause
274
1675000
7000
掌声
28:20
Now, what I just did was I worked工作 with the mathematics数学 --
275
1682000
3000
28:23
the diameter直径 and the circumference圆周.
276
1685000
2000
28:26
Sometimes有时 these pieces are mathematical数学的, in that way
277
1688000
3000
28:29
that I look at a shape形状 and say, what about if I use this and this and this.
278
1691000
3000
28:32
Sometimes有时 what happens发生 in life affects影响 my choice选择
279
1694000
5000
28:37
