Why you should listen

Paul Moller is the president, CEO and chair of Moller International, a company devoted to engineering the combination of automobile and jet known as the Moller Skycar. His company also works on the M200, a low-flying disc, or volantor, that may go into production later in 2009. (As cool as it looks, the M200 has serious applications as a rescue vehicle.) A partner company, Freedom Motors, builds the Rotapower engine.

Moller developed the Aeronautical Engineering program at UC Davis while a professor there from 1963 to 1975. In 1972 he founded SuperTrapp Industries, and also led the group that developed the Davis Research Park Complex between 1975 and 1983. He's been working on VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) personal vehicles since the late 1960s.

I was living活的 in a rural乡村 part部分 of Canada加拿大,

on the side of a mountain in a very isolated孤立 area.

00:46
Getting入门 to school学校, for a kid孩子 that was actually其实 pretty漂亮 short for his age年龄,

4000
00:50

At the end结束 of my first year in school学校, in the summer夏季 of that year,
17
48000
3000
01:05
I discovered发现 a couple一对 hummingbirds蜂鸟
18
53000
3000
01:08
that were caught抓住 in a shed near my home.
19
56000
2000
01:10
They'd他们会 worn磨损的 themselves他们自己 out,
20
58000
2000
01:12
beating跳动 themselves他们自己 against反对 the window窗口,
21

2000
01:14
and, well, they were easy简单 to capture捕获.
22
62000
2000
01:16
I took them outside and as I let them go, that split分裂 second第二, even though虽然 they were very tired,
23
64000
4000
01:20
that second第二 I let them go they hovered徘徊 for a second第二,
24

2000
01:22
then zipped压缩 off into the distance距离.
25
70000
2000
01:24
I thought, what a great way to get to school学校.
26

2000
01:26
(Laughter
27

01:29
For a kid孩子 at that age年龄, this was like infinite无穷 speed速度, disappearing消失,
28
77000
3000
01:33
and I was very inspired启发 by that.
29
81000
2000
01:35
And so the next下一个 -- over the next下一个
30
83000
2000
01:37
six decades几十年, believe it or not,
31
85000
2000
60年里
01:39
I've built内置 a number of aircraft飞机,
32
87000
3000
01:42
with the goal目标 of creating创建 something that could do for you, or me,
33
90000
4000
01:46
what the hummingbird蜂鸟 does,
34
94000
2000
01:48
and give you that flexibility灵活性.
35
96000
3000
01:51
I've called this vehicle车辆, generically一般, a volantorvolantor,
36
99000
4000
01:55
after the Latin拉丁 word "volant展翅," meaning含义,
37
103000
2000
01:57
to fly in a light, nimble敏捷 manner方式.
38
105000
3000
02:02
The FAAFAA, the controlling控制 body身体 above以上 all,
40
110000
3000
02:05
calls电话 it a "powered动力 lift电梯 aircraft飞机."
41
113000
3000
02:08
And they've他们已经 actually其实 issued发行 a pilot's飞行员 license执照 --
42
116000
3000
02:11
a powerliftpowerlift pilot's飞行员 license执照 -- for this type类型 of aircraft飞机.
43
119000
2000
“动力提升飞行员执照”——专门为这种飞行器。
02:15
It's closer接近 than you think. It's kind of remarkable卓越 when you consider考虑 that
44
123000
3000
02:18
there are no operational操作 powered动力 lift电梯 aircraft飞机.
45
126000
3000
02:21
So for once一旦, perhaps也许, the government政府 is ahead of itself本身.
46
129000
3000
02:25
The press calls电话 my particular特定 volantorvolantor a "Skycar空中汽车."
47
133000
5000
02:30
This is a little bit earlier version of it,
48
138000
3000
02:33
that's why it's given特定 the X designation指定,
49
141000
2000
02:35
but it's a four-passenger四座 aircraft飞机
50
143000
2000
02:37
that could take off vertically垂直, like a helicopter直升机 --
51
145000
2000
02:39
therefore因此 it doesn't need an airfield机场.
52
147000
2000
02:41
On the ground地面, it's powered动力 electrically.
53
149000
3000
02:45
It's actually其实 classified分类 as a motorcycle摩托车
54
153000
3000
02:48
because of the three wheels车轮, which哪一个 is a great asset财富
55
156000
2000
02:50
because it allows允许 you, theoretically理论上, to use this on the highways公路
56
158000
2000
02:52
in most states状态, and actually其实 in all cities城市.
57
160000
3000
02:55
So that's an asset财富 because if you've got to deal合同 with the crash紧急 protection保护 issues问题
58
163000
3000
02:58
of the automobile汽车, forget忘记 it -- you're never going to fly it.
59
166000
3000
03:02
(Laughter
60
170000
2000
03:07
One could say that a helicopter直升机
61
175000
2000
03:09
does pretty漂亮 much what the hummingbird蜂鸟 does,
62
177000
3000
03:12
and gets得到 around in much the same相同 way, and it's true真正,
63
180000
2000
03:14
but a helicopter直升机 is a very complex复杂 device设备.
64
182000
4000
03:18
It's expensive
65
186000
2000
03:20
so expensive昂贵 that very few少数 people could own拥有 or use it.
66
188000
3000
03:24
It's often经常 been described描述 because of its fragile脆弱 nature性质 and its complexity复杂,
67
192000
4000
03:28
as a series系列 of parts部分 -- a large number of parts部分 --
68
196000
2000
03:30
flying飞行 in formation编队.
69
198000
2000
03:32
(Laughter
70
200000
4000
03:37
Another另一个 difference区别, and I have to describe描述 this,
71
205000
2000
03:39
because it's very personal个人,
72
207000
2000
03:41
another另一个 great difference区别 between之间 the helicopter直升机
73
209000
2000
03:43
and the volantorvolantor --
74
211000
2000
03:45
in my case案件 the Skycar空中汽车 volantorvolantor --
75
213000
2000
03:47
is the experience经验 that I've had
76
215000
2000
03:49
in flying飞行 both of those.
77
217000
2000
03:51
In a helicopter直升机 you feel -- and it's still a remarkable卓越 sensation感觉 --
78
219000
3000
03:54
you feel like you're being存在 hauled拖拉 up from above以上
79
222000
3000
03:57
by a vibrating振动 crane起重机.
80
225000
2000
03:59
When you get in the Skycar空中汽车 -- and I can tell you,
81
227000
2000
04:01
there's only one other person that's flown飞行 it, but he had the same相同 sensation感觉 --
82
229000
3000
04:04
you really feel like you're being存在 lifted取消 up
83
232000
2000
04:06
by a magic魔法 carpet地毯,
84
234000
3000
04:09
without any vibration振动 whatsoever任何. The sensation感觉 is unbelievable难以置信的.
85
237000
3000
04:12
And it's been a great motivator动力.
86
240000
2000
04:14
I only get to fly this vehicle车辆 occasionally偶尔,
87
242000
3000
04:17
and only when I can persuade说服 my stockholders股东
88
245000
2000
04:19
to let me do so,
89
247000
2000
04:21
but it's still one of those wonderful精彩 experiences经验
90
249000
3000
04:24
that reward奖励 you for all that time.
91
252000
2000
04:30
What we really need is something to replace更换 the automobile汽车
92
258000
3000
04:33
for those 50-plus-加 mile英里 trips旅行.
93
261000
3000
04:36
Very few少数 people realize实现 that 50 mile-plus英里加 trips旅行
94
264000
2000
04:38
make up 85 percent百分 of the miles英里 traveled旅行 in America美国.
95
266000
3000
04:41
If we can get rid摆脱 of that,
96
269000
2000
04:43
then the highways公路 will now be useful有用 to you,
97
271000
3000
04:46
as contrasted对比 by what's happening事件
98
274000
2000
04:48
in many许多 parts部分 of the world世界 today今天.
99
276000
3000
04:52
On this next下一个 slide滑动, is an interesting有趣 history历史
100
280000
4000
04:56
of what we really have seen看到 in infrastructure基础设施,
101
284000
4000
05:00
because whether是否 I give you a perfect完善 Skycar空中汽车,
102
288000
3000
05:03
the perfect完善 vehicle车辆 for use, it's going to have very little value to you
103
291000
3000
05:06
unless除非 you've got a system系统 to use it in.
104
294000
2000
05:08
I'm sure any of you have asked the question,
105
296000
2000
05:10
yeah, are there great things up there -- what am I going to do, get up there?
106
298000
2000
05:12
It's bad enough足够 on a highway高速公路, what's it going to be like to be in the air空气?
107
300000
3000
05:15
This world世界 that you're going to be talking about tomorrow明天
108
303000
3000
05:18
is going to be completely全然 integrated集成. You're not going to be a pilot飞行员,
109
306000
2000
05:20
you're going to be a passenger乘客.
110
308000
2000
05:22
And it's the infrastructure基础设施 that really determines确定 whether是否 this process处理 goes forward前锋.
111
310000
3000
05:25
I can tell you, technically技术上 we can build建立 SkycarsSkycars --
112
313000
2000
05:27
my God, we went to the moon月亮!
113
315000
2000
05:29
The technology技术 there was much more difficult than what I'm dealing交易 with here.
114
317000
3000
05:32
But we have to have these priority优先 changes变化,
115
320000
2000
05:34
we have to have infrastructure基础设施 to go with this.
116
322000
2000
05:36
Historically历史 you see that we got around
117
324000
2000
05:38
200 years年份 ago by canals运河,
118
326000
2000
05:40
and as that system系统 disappeared消失, were replaced更换 by railroads铁路.
119
328000
3000
05:43
As that disappeared消失 we came来了 in with highways公路.
120
331000
2000
05:45
But if you look at that top最佳 corner -- the highway高速公路 system系统 --
121
333000
3000
05:48
you see where we are today今天. Highways公路 are no longer being存在 built内置,
122
336000
3000
05:52
and that's a fact事实. You won't惯于 see any additional额外 highways公路
123
340000
3000
05:55
in the next下一个 10 years年份.
124
343000
2000
05:57
However然而, the next下一个 10 years年份, if like the last 10 years年份,
125
345000
2000
05:59
we're going to see 30 percent百分 more traffic交通.
126
347000
3000
06:02
And where is that going to lead you to?
127
350000
2000
06:04
So the issue问题 then, I've often经常 asked, is
128
352000
2000
06:06
when is it going to happen发生?
129
354000
3000
06:09
When are we going to be able能够 to have these vehicles汽车?
130
357000
3000
06:12
And of course课程, if you ask me, I'm going to give you a really optimistic乐观 view视图.
131
360000
3000
06:15
After all, I've been spending开支 60 years年份 here believing相信 it's going to happen发生 tomorrow明天.
132
363000
3000
06:18
So, I'm not going to quote引用 myself on this.
133
366000
3000
06:21
I'd prefer比较喜欢 to quote引用 someone有人 else其他,
134
369000
2000

06:31
of the future未来 of this type类型 of aircraft飞机.
138
379000
3000
06:35
Now I would argue争论, actually其实, if you look at the fact事实 that on the highways公路 today今天,
139
383000
3000
06:38
you're only averaging平均 about 30 miles英里 per hour小时 --
140
386000
3000
06:41
on average平均, according根据 to the DOT --
141
389000
3000
06:44
the Skycar空中汽车 travels旅行 at over 300 miles英里 an hour小时,
142
392000
2000
06:46
up to 25,000 feet.
143
394000
3000
06:49
And so, in effect影响, you could see perhaps也许 a tenfold十倍 increase增加
144
397000
2000
06:51
in the ability能力 to get around
145
399000
3000
06:54
as far as speed速度 is concerned关心.
146
402000
2000
07:01
Unbeknownst不知情 to many许多 of you,
147
409000
3000
07:04
the highway高速公路 in the sky天空 that I'm talking about here
148
412000
2000
07:06
has been under construction施工 for 10 years年份.
149
414000
2000
07:09
It makes品牌 use of the GPS全球定位系统 -- you're familiar with GPS全球定位系统 in your automobile汽车,
150
417000
3000
07:12
but you may可能 not be familiar with the fact事实 that there's a GPS全球定位系统 U.S.,
151
420000
3000
07:15
there's a Russian俄语 GPS全球定位系统,
152
423000
2000
07:17
and there's a new GPS全球定位系统 system系统
153
425000
2000
07:19
going to Europe欧洲, called Galileo伽利略.
154
427000
2000
07:21
With those three systems系统,
155
429000
2000
07:23
you have what is always necessary必要 --
156
431000
2000
07:25
a level水平 of redundancy冗余 that says,
157
433000
2000
07:27
if one system系统 fails失败, you'll你会 still have a way
158
435000
2000
07:29
to make sure that you're being存在 controlled受控.
159
437000
2000
07:31
Because if you're in this world世界, where computers电脑 are controlling控制 what you're doing,
160
439000
3000
07:34
it's going to be very critical危急 that something can't fail失败 on you.
161
442000
3000
07:39
How would a trip in a Skycar空中汽车 work?
162
447000
2000
07:41
Well, you can't right now
163
449000
2000
07:43
take off from your home because it's too noisy嘈杂.
164
451000
3000
07:46
I mean to be able能够 to take off from your home, you'd have to be extremely非常 quiet安静.
165
454000
3000
07:49
But it's still fairly相当 quiet安静.
166
457000
2000
07:51
You'd motor发动机, electrically, to a vertiportvertiport,
167
459000
4000
07:55
which哪一个 may可能 be a few少数 blocks, maybe even a few少数 miles英里 away.
168
463000
2000
07:57
This is clearly明确地, as I said earlier, a roadable上路 aircraft飞机,
169
465000
3000
08:00
and you're not going to spend that much time on the road.
170
468000
2000
08:02
After all, if you can fly like that,
171
470000
2000
08:04
why are you going to drive驾驶 around on a highway高速公路?
172
472000
2000
08:06
Go to a local本地 vertiportvertiport,
173
474000
2000
08:08
plug插头 in your destination目的地,
174
476000
3000
08:11
delivered交付 almost几乎 like a passenger乘客.
175
479000
4000
08:15
You can play computer电脑 games游戏, you can sleep睡觉, you can read on the way.
176
483000
3000
08:19
This is the world世界 -- there won't惯于 be you as a pilot飞行员. And I know the pilots飞行员 in the audience听众 aren't going to like that --
177
487000
3000
08:22
and I've had a lot of bad feedback反馈
178
490000
2000
08:24
from people who want to be up there, flying飞行 around
179
492000
2000
08:26
and experiencing经历 that.
180
494000
3000
08:29
And of course课程, I suppose假设 like recreational休闲 parks公园 you can still do that.
181
497000
3000
08:32
But the vehicle车辆 itself本身 is going to be a very, very controlled受控 environment环境.
182
500000
4000
08:36
Or it's going to have no use to you as a person who might威力 use such这样 a system系统.
183
504000
4000

08:49
and I was able能够 to fund基金 the initiation引发 of the program程序 back in that time.
188

08:53
And then through通过 the various各个 years年份

08:55
we invented发明 various各个 vehicles汽车.
190
523000

08:57
Actually其实 the critical危急 point was in 1989,

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Paul Moller - Inventor
With a team of engineers, Paul Moller works on the Skycar, a combination car and jet, as well as the M200, a saucer-shaped hovering car. He also develops next-generation engines to power these and other amazing vehicles.
