ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Suzana Herculano-Houzel - Neuroscientist
Suzana Herculano-Houzel shrunk the human brain by 14 billion neurons -- by developing a new way to count them.

Why you should listen

How many neurons make a human brain? For years, the answer has been (give or take) 100 billion. But neuroscientist Suzana Herculano-Houzel decided to count them herself. Her research approach involved dissolving four human brains (donated to science) into a homogeneous mixture -- in her lab at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Rio de Janeiro, they call it "brain soup." She then took a sample of the mix, counted the number of cell nuclei belonging to neurons, and scaled that up. Result: the human brain has about 86 billion neurons, 14 billion fewer than assumed -- but intriguingly, far more than other animals, relative to brain size.

She suggests that it was the invention of cooking by our ancestors -- which makes food yield much more metabolic energy -- that allowed humans to develop the largest primate brain. She's now working on elephant and whale brains to test her hypothesis.

So the humanhumà braincervell is largermés gran than it should be,

So, a rodentrosegador braincervell with 86 billionmil milions neuronsneurones

Això ens porta a una conclusió

06:48
whichquin is that we are not rodentsrosegadors.
173
396710
2647
que és que no som rosegadors.
06:51
The humanhumà braincervell is not a largegran ratrat braincervell.
174
399357
3268
El cervell humà no és
un cervell de rata gran.

però no és una comparació justa,
06:59
givendonat that we know that we are not rodentsrosegadors.
177
407473

ja que sabem que no som rosegadors.
07:01
We are primatesprimats,
178

Som primats,
07:02
so the correctcorrecte comparisoncomparació is to other primatesprimats.
179
410952

així que la comparació correcta és

07:05
And there, if you do the mathmatemàtiques,

you find that a genericgenèric primateprimats

07:14
whichquin seemssembla just right,

en el meu cas això és

07:21
whichquin bringsporta us to a very unsurprisingsorprenent
187
429178
2620
Això ens porta a una conclusió
07:23
but still incrediblyincreïblement importantimportant conclusionconclusió:
188
431798
2969
molt poc sorprenent però
increïblement important:
07:26
I am a primateprimats.
189
434767
1341
sóc un primat.
07:28
And all of you are primatesprimats.
190
436108
2698
I tots vosaltres sou primats.
07:30
And so was DarwinDarwin.
191
438806
1900
I també ho era Darwin.
07:32
I love to think that DarwinDarwin
would have really appreciatedapreciat this.
192
440706
2940
M'agrada pensar que Darwin
apreciaria molt això.
07:35
His braincervell, like oursel nostre,
193
443646
1967
El seu cervell, com el nostre,
07:37
was madefet in the imageimatge of other primateprimats brainscervells.
194
445613
3511
estava fet igual que el cervell
d'altres primats.
07:41
So the humanhumà braincervell maypot be remarkablenotable, yes,
195
449124
2302
Així que el cervell humà pot ser
extraordinari, sí,
07:43
but it is not specialespecial in its numbernúmero of neuronsneurones.
196
451426
2781
però no és especial en
el nombre de neurones que té.
07:46
It is just a largegran primateprimats braincervell.
197
454207
1855
Només és un cervell gran de primat.
07:48
I think that's a very humblinglliçó d'humilitat and soberingsobri thought
198
456062
3044
Crec que aquest és un pensament
humil, que fa reflexionar
07:51
that should remindrecorda us of our placelloc in naturenaturalesa.
199
459106
3063
i que ens hauria de recordar
el lloc que ocupem dins la naturalesa.
07:54
Why does it costcost so much energyenergia, then?
200
462169
2644
Llavors per què necessita tanta energia?
07:56
Well, other people have figuredimaginat out
201
464813
1447
Bé, altra gent ha descobert
07:58
how much energyenergia the humanhumà braincervell
202
466260
1503
quanta energia gasta el
07:59
and that of other speciesespècie costscostos,
203
467763
1407
cervell humà i el d'altres espècies,
08:01
and now that we knewsabia how manymolts neuronsneurones
204
469170
1652
i ara que sabem quantes neurones
08:02
eachcadascun braincervell was madefet of, we could do the mathmatemàtiques.
205
470822
2342
té cada cervell, podríem calcular-ho.
08:05
And it turnsgirs out that bothtots dos humanhumà
206
473164
1866
I resulta que tant el cervell humà
08:07
and other brainscervells costcost about the samemateix,
207
475030
2823
com altres cervells gasten
més o menys el mateix,
08:09
an averagemitjana of sixsis caloriescalories
perper billionmil milions neuronsneurones perper day.
208
477853
3421
una mitjana de sis calories per cada
mil milions de neurones per dia.
08:13
So the totaltotal energeticenèrgic costcost of a braincervell
209
481274
2139
Així que el cost energètic total
d'un cervell
08:15
is a simplesenzill, linearlineal functionfunció
210
483413
2034
és una funció simple i lineal
08:17
of its numbernúmero of neuronsneurones,
211
485447
1709
del nombre de neurones que té,
08:19
and it turnsgirs out that the humanhumà braincervell
212
487156
2183
i resulta que el cervell humà
08:21
costscostos just as much energyenergia as you would expectespera.
213
489339
3841
gasta tanta energia com s'espera.
08:25
So the reasonraó why the humanhumà braincervell
214
493180
2091
Així que la raó per la que el cervell humà
08:27
costscostos so much energyenergia is simplysimplement because
215
495271
1672
gasta tanta energia és simplement que
08:28
it has a hugeenorme numbernúmero of neuronsneurones,
216
496943
1983
té un nombre grandiós de neurones,
08:30
and because we are primatesprimats
217
498926
1485
i com que som primats
08:32
with manymolts more neuronsneurones for a givendonat bodycos sizemida
218
500411
2499
amb moltes més neurones per una
mida de cos determinada
08:34
than any other animalanimal,
219
502910
1522
que qualsevol altre animal,
08:36
the relativefamiliar costcost of our braincervell is largegran,
220
504432
3540
el cost relatiu del nostre cervell és gran,
08:39
but just because we're primatesprimats,
not because we're specialespecial.
221
507972
3001
però només perquè som primats,
no perquè siguem especials.
08:42
Last questionpregunta, then:
222
510973
1190
L'última pregunta, llavors:
08:44
how did we come by this
remarkablenotable numbernúmero of neuronsneurones,
223
512163
3115
com vam aconseguir aquest
nombre extraordinari de neurones
08:47
and in particularparticular, if great apessimis
224
515278
1900
i en particular, si altres homínids
08:49
are largermés gran than we are,
225
517178
1555
són més grans que nosaltres,
08:50
why don't they have a largermés gran braincervell
than we do, with more neuronsneurones?
226
518733
3765
per què no tenen un cervell
més gran i amb més neurones?
08:54
When we realizedadonar-se'n how much expensivecar it is
227
522498
2090
Quan ens va adonar com
de costós és
08:56
to have a lot of neuronsneurones in the braincervell, I figuredimaginat,
228
524588
2333
tenir un munt de neurones al cervell,
vaig pensar que
08:58
maybe there's a simplesenzill reasonraó.
229
526921
2003
potser hi ha una raó ben simple.
09:00
They just can't affordpagar the energyenergia
230
528924
1683
Simplement no es poden
permetre l'energia
09:02
for bothtots dos a largegran bodycos
and a largegran numbernúmero of neuronsneurones.
231
530607
2950
per un cos gran i
un nombre elevat de neurones.
09:05
So we did the mathmatemàtiques.
232
533557
1429
Així que vam calcular-ho.
09:06
We calculatedcalcula on the one hand
233
534986
1600
Per una banda, vam calcular
09:08
how much energyenergia a primateprimats getses posa perper day
234
536586
1941
quanta energia aconsegueix
cada dia un primar
09:10
from eatingmenjant rawcrua foodsaliments,
235
538527
1350
ingerint menjar cru,
09:11
and on the other hand, how much energyenergia
236
539877
2037
i per altra banda, quanta energia
09:13
a bodycos of a certaincert sizemida costscostos
237
541914
1764
necessita un cos
d'una certa mida
09:15
and how much energyenergia a braincervell of a
certaincert numbernúmero of neuronsneurones costscostos,
238
543678
3387
i quanta energia necessita un cervell
amb un cert nombre de neurones,
09:19
and we lookedmirava for the combinationscombinacions
239
547065
1489
i vam buscar les combinacions
09:20
of bodycos sizemida and numbernúmero of braincervell neuronsneurones
240
548554
2411
de mida corporal i nombre de neurones
09:22
that a primateprimats could affordpagar
241
550965
1270
que un primat es pogués
permetre
09:24
if it ateva menjar a certaincert numbernúmero of hourshores perper day.
242
552235
2548
si mengés durant un cert nombre
d'hores cada dia.
09:26
And what we foundtrobat is that
243
554783
1816
I el que vam descobrir és que
09:28
because neuronsneurones are so expensivecar,
244
556599
1712
com que les neurones necessiten
tanta energia,
09:30
there is a tradeoffequilibri betweenentre
bodycos sizemida and numbernúmero of neuronsneurones.
245
558311
3370
hi ha una compensació entre
mida corporal i nombre de neurones.
09:33
So a primateprimats that eatsmenja eightvuit hourshores perper day
246
561681
2951
Així que un primat que menja 8
hores cada dia
09:36
can affordpagar at mostla majoria 53 billionmil milions neuronsneurones,
247
564632
3024
es pot permetre com a màxim
53 mil milions de neurones,
09:39
but then its bodycos cannotno pot be any biggermés gran
248
567656
1727
però llavors el seu cos no pot
09:41
than 25 kilosquilos.
249
569383
1954
superar els 25 quilos.
09:43
To weighpesar any more than that,
250
571337
1701
Per pesar més,
09:45
it has to give up neuronsneurones.
251
573038
1769
ha de perdre neurones.
09:46
So it's eithertampoc a largegran bodycos
252
574807
2653
Així que és o tenir un
cos gran
09:49
or a largegran numbernúmero of neuronsneurones.
253
577460
1495
o tenir un nombre
elevat de neurones.
09:50
When you eatmenjar like a primateprimats,
254
578955
1365
Si t'alimentes com un primat,
09:52
you can't affordpagar bothtots dos.
255
580320
2236
no pots permetre't ambdues coses.
09:54
One way out of this metabolicmetabòlica limitationlimitació
256
582556
1964
Una manera de sortir
d'aquesta limitació metabòlica
09:56
would be to spendGastar even more hourshores perper day eatingmenjant,
257
584520
3401
seria passar-se més hores del dia menjant,
09:59
but that getses posa dangerousperillós,
258
587921
1363
però això és perillós,
10:01
and pastpassat a certaincert pointpunt, it's just not possiblepossible.
259
589284
2719
i arribats a un cert punt, no és possible.
10:04
GorillasGoril·les and orangutansorangutans, for instanceinstància,
260
592003
1537
Els goril·les i els orangutans, per exemple,
10:05
affordpagar about 30 billionmil milions neuronsneurones
261
593540
1923
poden tenir al voltant de
30 mil milions de neurones
10:07
by spendingdespesa eightvuit and a halfla meitat hourshores perper day eatingmenjant,
262
595463
2966
menjant 8 hores i mitja cada dia,
10:10
and that seemssembla to be about as much as they can do.
263
598429
