ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Richard Turere - Inventor
Young inventor Richard Turere invented "lion lights," an elegant way to protect his family's cattle from lion attacks.

Why you should listen

Richard Turere is a young Maasai man who lives in the wilderness of the Kenya savanna, on the edge of a national park full of rhino, giraffe, buffalo and lions. Since he was 9, Richard has held the honored chore of tending his father's cattle; in his free time, he tinkered with electrical gadgets. After dismantling the few household appliances, Richard taught himself how to fix them, and then he started inventing. He fit his parents' home with fans made from car parts and other junkyard components harvested from junkyards, then built other inventions for his neighbors.

Now 13, he is renowned for inventing "lion lights," a fence made of basic pieces (solar charging cells, flashlight parts), which quickly and effectively scares lions away from his father's cattle. Richard's dream is to be an aircraft engineer.

So I had to find a way of solvingsoluzione this problemproblema.

perché anzi aiutava i leoni

02:10
So I didn't give up. I continuedcontinua.

Quindi non ho rinunciato. Ho continuato.
02:13
And a secondsecondo ideaidea I got was

02:16
to use a scarecrowSpaventapasseri.
36
124272

quella di usare uno spaventapasseri.
02:18
I was tryingprovare to tricktrucco the lionsleoni
37
126339

Volevo ingannare i leoni
02:19
[into thinkingpensiero] that I was standingin piedi nearvicino the cowshedstalla.
38
127953
2907
02:22
But lionsleoni are very cleverintelligente. (LaughterRisate)
39
130860
4076
Ma i leoni sono molto intelligenti. (Risate)
02:26
They will come the first day and they see the scarecrowSpaventapasseri, and they go back,
40
134936
4446
02:31
but the secondsecondo day, they'llfaranno come and they say,
41
139382
3274
ma il secondo giorno, arrivano e dicono,
02:34
this thing is not movingin movimento here, it's always here. (LaughterRisate)
42
142656
3110
(Risate)
02:37
So he jumpssalti in and killsuccide the animalsanimali.
43
145766
3237
Così saltano e uccidono gli animali.
02:41
So one night, I was walkinga passeggio around the cowshedstalla with a torchtorcia,
44
149003
3953
02:44
and that day, the lionsleoni didn't come.
45
152956
3843
02:48
And I discoveredscoperto that lionsleoni are afraidimpaurito of a movingin movimento lightleggero.
46
156799
4558
02:53
So I had an ideaidea.
47
161357
2573
Così ho avuto un'idea.
02:55
SinceDal I was a smallpiccolo boyragazzo,
48
163930
2310
Fin a quando ero un ragazzino,
02:58
I used to work in my roomcamera for the wholetotale day,
49
166240
3258
03:01
and I even tookha preso aparta parte my mom'sLa mamma di newnuovo radioRadio,
50
169498
3106
03:04
and that day she almostquasi killeducciso me,
51
172604
1818
e quel giorno mi ha quasi ucciso,
03:06
but I learnedimparato a lot about electronicselettronica. (LaughterRisate)
52
174422
6254
ma ho imparato molto sull'elettronica. (Risate)
03:12
So I got an oldvecchio carauto batterybatteria,
53
180676
3360
03:16
an indicatorindicatore boxscatola. It's a smallpiccolo devicedispositivo foundtrovato in a motorcyclemotociclo,
54
184036
3790
03:19
and it helpsaiuta motoristsautomobilisti when they want to turnturno right or left. It blinkslampeggia.
55
187826
5051
aiuta i motociclisti quando vogliono girare a destra o a sinistra. Lampeggia.
03:24
And I got a switchinterruttore where I can switchinterruttore on the lightsluci, on and off.
56
192877
4554
03:29
And that's a smallpiccolo torchtorcia from a brokenrotto flashlighttorcia elettrica.
57
197431
4828
03:34
So I setimpostato up everything.
58
202259
2881
Così ho installato il tutto.
03:37
As you can see, the solarsolare panelpannello chargesoneri the batterybatteria,
59
205140
3224
Come potete vedere, il pannello solare ricarica la batteria,
03:40
and the batterybatteria suppliesforniture the powerenergia
60
208364

e la batteria fornisce l'alimentazione
03:42
to the smallpiccolo indicatorindicatore boxscatola. I call it a transformertrasformatore.
61
210485
3055
alla piccola scatola con la spia. Io lo chiamo trasformatore.
03:45
And the indicatorindicatore boxscatola makesfa the lightsluci flashveloce.
62
213540
4721
03:50
As you can see, the bulbslampadine faceviso outsideal di fuori,
63
218261
3751
03:54
because that's where the lionsleoni come from.
64
222012
2488
03:56
And that's how it lookssembra to lionsleoni when they come at night.
65

04:00
The lightsluci flashveloce and tricktrucco

04:28
One of them was this grandmothernonna.

Uno di loro era questa nonna.
04:31
She had a lot of her animalsanimali beingessere killeducciso by lionsleoni,
