ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Cesar Harada - Inventor, environmentalist, educator
TED Senior Fellow Cesar Harada aims to harness the forces of nature as he invents innovative remedies for man-made problems like oil spills and radioactive leaks.

Why you should listen

Cesar Harada believes that ocean currents, the wind and other naturally occuring phenomenon can provide unique inspiration and novel solutions to mankind’s worst disasters, like oil spills and radioactive leaks. A French-Japanese inventor and TED senior fellow, he is the creator of Protei, a revolutionary sailing technology -- featuring a front rudder, flexible hull and open-soure hardware -- that allows for efficient clean up of both oil and plastics from the sea. Currently based in London, Harada recently traveled to Japan and is designing Protei to measure radioactivity along the country's coast.

The general coordinator of the future International Ocean Station, Harada teaches at Goldsmiths University London. A former project leader at MIT, he graduated form the Royal College of Arts Design Interactions in London and worked at the Southampton University Hydrodynamics laboratory on wave energy. Harada has also studied animantion, and his films and installations have been seen at festivals and events across the world, from the United States to Japan.

In the ocean,

1032
No oceano,
00:17
what is the common point
1
1540
1840
o que há em comum
00:19
between oil, plastic and radioactivity?
2
3380
5768
entre petróleo, plástico e radioatividade?
00:25
On the top line, this is the BP oil spill:
3
9148
5217
00:30
billions of barrels of oil gushing
4
14365
2023
bilhões de barris de petróleo jorrando
00:32
in the Gulf of Mexico.
5
16388
1369
no Golfo do México.
00:33
The middle line is millions of tons of
6
17757
2175
00:35
plastic debris accumulating in our ocean,
7
19932
2404
restos de plástico acumulando-se no nosso oceano.
00:38
and the third line is radioactive material
8
22336
2720
E na terceira linha temos material radioativo
00:40
leaking from Fukushima nuclear power plant
9
25056
2296
vazando da usina nuclear de Fukushima
00:43
in the Pacific Ocean.
10
27352
1338
no Oceano Pacífico.
00:44
Well, the three big problems have in common
11
28690
4583
00:49
that they are man-made problems
12
33273
2815
é que são problemas criados pelo homem
00:51
but they are controlled by natural forces.
13
36088
2056
00:54
This should make us feel very, terribly awful
14
38144
4408
Isto deveria nos fazer sentir extremamente mal
00:58
as much as it should make us feel hopeful,
15
42552
2327
01:00
because if we have the power to create these problems,
16
44879
2809
01:03
we may as well have the power
17
47688
1680
devemos também ter o poder
01:05
to remediate these problems.
18
49368
1432
de remediá-los.
01:06
But what about natural forces?
19
50800
1944
Mas e as forças da natureza?
01:08
Well, that's exactly what I want to talk about today,
20
52744
2983
01:11
is how we can use these natural forces
21
55727
2305
é sobre como podemos usar estas forças
01:13
to remediate these man-made problems.
22
58032
5223
para remediar estes problemas criados pelo homem.
01:19
When the BP oil spill happened,
23
63255
1226
01:20
I was working at MIT, and I was in charge
24
64481
2765
eu trabalhava no MIT e era responsável
01:23
of developing an oil spill-cleaning technology.
25
67246
2397
01:25
And I had a chance to go in the Gulf of Mexico
26
69643
3413
01:28
and meet some fishermen and see
27
73056
2337
conhecer alguns pescadores e ver
01:31
the terrible conditions in which they were working.
28
75393
1791
as terríveis condições em que eles trabalhavam.
01:33
More than 700 of these boats,
29
77184
3081
Mais de 700 desses barcos,
01:36
which are fishermen boats repurposed
30
80265
2307
que são barcos de pesca readaptados
01:38
with oil absorbent in white
31
82572
2461
com absorventes de petróleo (em branco)
01:40
and oil containment in orange, were used,
32
85033
2395
01:43
but they only collected three percent of the oil on the surface,
33
87428
3259
01:46
and the health of the cleaners
34
90687
1712
e a saúde dos limpadores
01:48
were very deeply affected.
35
92399
1913
era profundamente afetada.
01:50
I was working on a very interesting technology
36
94312
3994
Eu trabalhava numa tecnologia muito interessante
01:54
at MIT, but it was a very long-term view
37
98306
2309
01:56
of how to develop technology,
38
100615
1434
de longo prazo,
01:57
and it was going to be a very expensive technology,
39
102049
2518
e seria uma tecnologia muito cara
02:00
and also it would be patented.
40
104567
2448
e também seria patenteada.
02:02
So I wanted to develop something that we could
41
107015
2632
Então eu quis criar algo que pudéssemos
02:05
develop very fast, that would be cheap,
42
109647
3400
desenvolver muito rápido, que fosse barato,
02:08
and that would be open-source, so, because
43
113047
2440
e que fosse aberto, porque
02:11
oil spills are not only happening in the Gulf of Mexico,
44
115487
2168
02:13
and that would be using renewable energy.
45
117655
2616
e aquilo estaria usando energia renovável.
02:16
So I quit my dream job,
46
120271
2400
Então saí do emprego dos meus sonhos
02:18
and I moved to New Orleans,
47
122671
1616
e me mudei para Nova Orleans,
02:20
and I kept on studying how the oil spill was happening.
48
124287
2944
02:23
Currently, what they were doing is
49
127231
2072
Naquele momento, o que eles faziam era
02:25
that they were using these small fishing boats,
50
129303
1646
usar estes pequenos barcos de pesca,
02:26
and they were cleaning clean lines in an ocean of dirt.
51
130949
3160
02:30
If you're using the exact same amount of surface
52
134109
3713
02:33
of oil absorbent, but you're just paying attention
53
137822
2153
de absorvente de petróleo, mas prestar atenção
02:35
to natural patterns, and if you're going up the winds,
54
139975
2333
02:38
you can collect a lot more material.
55
142308
1768
poderá coletar muito mais material.
02:39
If you're multiplying the rig,
56
144076
2121
Se você multiplicar o equipamento,
02:42
so you multiply how many layers of absorbent
57
146197
2575
e assim multiplicar a quantidade de camadas de absorventes
02:44
you're using, you can collect a lot more.
58
148772
1902
que você usa, poderá coletar muito mais.
02:46
But it's extremely difficult to move oil absorbent
59
150674
2601
02:49
against the winds, the surface currents and the waves.
60
153275
3632
02:52
These are enormous forces.
61
156907
1464
Estas forças são enormes.
02:54
So the very simple idea was to use the ancient technique
62
158371
3023
02:57
of sailing and tacking of the wind
63
161394
2253
02:59
to capture or intercept the oil
64
163647
2618
para capturar ou interceptar o petróleo
03:02
that is drifting down the wind.
65
166265
1342
que é impulsionado por ele.
03:03
So this didn't require any invention.
66
167607
3497
Isto não precisou de nenhuma invenção.
03:07
We just took a simple sailing boat
67
171104
1703
03:08
and we tried to pull something long and heavy,
68
172807
1897
e tentamos puxar algo longo e pesado,
03:10
but as we tacked back and forth,
69
174704
2312
mas enquanto ziguezagueávamos,
03:12
what we lost was two things:
70
177016
1671
perdíamos duas coisas:
03:14
we were losing pulling power and direction.
71
178687
3377
o poder de tração e a direção.
03:17
And so, I thought, what about if we just take the rudder
72
182064
3832
E então pensei, e se apenas levássemos o leme
03:21
from the back of the boat to the front,
73
185896
1512
de trás para a frente do barco,
03:23
would we have better control?
74
187408
1743
teríamos um melhor controle?
03:25
So I built this small sailing robot
75
189151
2216
Então construí este pequeno robô de navegação
03:27
with the rudder at the front,
76
191367
1248
com o leme na frente,
03:28
and I was trying to pull something very long and heavy,
77
192615
2465
e estava tentando puxar algo muito longo e pesado,
03:30
so that's a four-meter-long object just to pull,
78
195080
3207
03:34
and I was surprised with just a 14-centimeter rudder,
79
198287
2912
03:37
I could control four meters of absorbent.
80
201199
2352
pude controlar 4 metros de absorvente.
03:39
Then I was so happy that I kept playing with the robot,
81
203551
3816
03:43
and so you see the robot has
82
207367
2464
e assim você vê que o robô tem
03:45
a front rudder here.
83
209831
1672
um leme frontal aqui.
03:47
Normally it's at the back.
84
211503
1216
Normalmente é na parte de trás.
03:48
And, playing, I realized that the maneuverability
85
212719
3615
03:52
of this was really amazing,
86
216334
1280
era realmente incrível,
03:53
and I could avoid an obstacle at the very last second,
87
217614
1928
03:55
more maneuverable than a normal boat.
88
219542
1672
mais manobrável que um barco normal.
03:57
Then I started publishing online, and
89
221214
2864
Então comecei a publicar na internet e
03:59
some friends from Korea, they started being
90
224078
2912
alguns amigos da Coréia começaram a
04:02
interested in this, and we made a boat
91
226990
1729
04:04
which has a front rudder and a back rudder,
92
228719
1808
04:06
so we started interacting with this,
93
230527
2058
Começamos a interagir com isto
04:08
and it was slightly better,
94
232585
2119
e ele era ligeiramente melhor,
04:10
although it was very small and a bit off balance,
95
234704
1924
04:12
but then we thought,
96
236628
1080
Mas então pensamos,
04:13
what if we have more than two points of control?
97
237708
1888
04:15
What if the entire boat becomes a point of control?
98
239596
1992
04:17
What if the entire boat changes shape?
99
241588
2120
04:19
So — (Applause)
100
243708
2440
Então - (Aplausos)
04:22
Thank you very much. (Applause)
101
246148
1896
Muito obrigado. (Aplausos)
04:23
And so that's the beginning of Protei,
102
248044
2585
E assim começou o Protei,
04:26
and that's the first boat in history
103
250629
1639
04:28
that completely changed the shape of the hull
104
252268
1624
que mudou completamente o formato do casco
04:29
in order to control it,
105
253892
1170
para controlá-lo,
04:30
and the properties of sailing that we get
106
255062
2886
e as características de navegação que obtemos
04:33
are very superior compared to a normal boat.
107
257948
2898
04:36
When we're turning, we have the feeling of surfing,
108
260846
2654
04:39
and the way it's going up-wind, it's very efficient.
109
263500
4116
04:43
This is low speed, low wind speed,
110
267616
2700
04:46
and the maneuverability is very increased,
111
270316
2073
e a capacidade de manobra é bem aumentada,
04:48
and here I'm going to do a small jibe,
112
272389
2311
e aqui vou mudar de rumo,
04:50
and look at the position of the sail.
113
274700
2096
e olhe para a posição da vela.
04:52
What's happening is that, because the boat changes shape,
114
276796
3600
04:56
the position of the front sail and the main sail
115
280396
2340
a posição da vela frontal e da principal
04:58
are different to the wind.
116
282736
1177
são diferentes em relação ao vento.
04:59
We're catching wind from both sides.
117
283913
1883
Captamos vento de ambos os lados.
05:01
And this is exactly what we're looking [for]
118
285796
2259
05:03
if we want to pull something long and heavy.
119
288055
1784
se quisermos puxar algo longo e pesado.
05:05
We don't want to lose pulling power, nor direction.
120
289839
2389
05:08
So, I wanted to know if this was possible
121
292228
2840
05:10
to put this at an industrial level,
122
295068
1471
de ser colocado a nível industrial.
05:12
so we made a large boat with a large sail,
123
296539
2512
05:14
and with a very light hull, inflatable,
124
299051
2696
e com um casco muito leve, inflável,
05:17
very small footprint,
125
301747
1505
com uma superfície de contato muito reduzida,
05:19
so we have a very big size and power ratio.
126
303252
2824
05:21
After this, we wanted to see if we could
127
306076
3231
Depois disto, queríamos saber se poderíamos
05:25
implement this and automate the system,
128
309307
2297
implementar e automatizar o sistema,
05:27
so we used the same system but we added
129
311604
1672
então usamos o mesmo sistema mas adicionamos
05:29
a structure to it so we could activate the machine.
130
313276
2370
05:31
So, we used the same bladder-inflated system,
131
315646
3214
05:34
and we took it for testing.
132
318860
1984
e levamos para os testes.
05:36
So this is happening in the Netherlands.
133
320844
2311
Isto aconteceu na Holanda.
05:39
We tried in the water without any skin or ballast
134
323155
2531
05:41
just to see how it works.
135
325686
2571
apenas para ver como funcionava.
05:44
And then we mounted a camera for controlling it,
136
328257
2685
E então montamos uma câmera para controlá-lo,
05:46
but quickly we saw that we would need
137
330942
2902
mas rapidamente percebemos que precisaríamos
05:49
a lot more weight at the bottom,
138
333844
2149
de muito mais peso no fundo,
05:51
so we had to take it back to the lab,
139
335993
1537
05:53
and then we built a skin around it,
140
337530
2088
e daí construímos uma cobertura ao redor,
05:55
we put batteries, remote controllers, and then
141
339618
3287
colocamos baterias, controladores remotos, e depois
05:58
we put it in the water and then we
142
342905
1448
colocamos na água e então
06:00
let it go in the water and see how well it would work,
143
344353
3161
o soltamos para ver como iria funcionar.
06:03
so let some rope out, and hope it's going to work,
144
347514
3424
06:06
and it worked okay, but we still have a long way.
145
350938
3223
06:10
Our small prototype has given us good insight
146
354161
2436
Nosso pequeno protótipo nos deu a compreensão
06:12
that it's working very well,
147
356597
1346
de que está funcionando muito bem,
06:13
but we still need to work a lot more on this.
148
357943
2685
mas que ainda precisamos trabalhar muito nisto.
06:16
So what we are doing is an accelerated evolution
149
360628
3869
06:20
of sailing technology.
150
364497
1448
da tecnologia de navegação.
06:21
We went from a back rudder to a front rudder
151
365945
1927
06:23
to two rudders to multiple rudders
152
367872
2011
para dois lemes, para múltiplos lemes
06:25
to the whole boat changing shape,
153
369883
1671
e para a mudança completa do formato do barco.
06:27
and the more we are moving forward,
154
371554
1856
E quanto mais avançamos,
06:29
and the more the design looks simple and cute. (Laughter)
155
373410
6047
mais o design fica simples e bonitinho. (Risadas)
06:35
But I wanted to show you a fish because --
156
379457
2377
06:37
In fact, it's very different from a fish.
157
381834
3070
06:40
A fish will move because -- by changing like this,
158
384904
4400
Um peixe se move porque -- mexendo-se assim,
06:45
but our boat is propelled by the wind still,
159
389304
3099
06:48
and the hull controls the trajectory.
160
392403
2407
e o casco controla a trajetória.
06:50
So I brought to you for the first time on the TED stage
161
394810
3654
06:54
Protei Number Eight. It's not the last one,
162
398464
2385
Protei Número 8. Não é o mais recente,
06:56
but it's a good one for making demos.
163
400849
2249
mas é bom para fazer demonstrações.
06:58
So the first thing as I show you in the video is
164
403098
2276
A primeira coisa, como mostrei no vídeo, é
07:01
that we may be able to control the trajectory
165
405374
3987
07:05
of a sailing boat better,
166
409361
1464
de um barco à vela,
07:06
or we may be able to never be in irons,
167
410825
3061
07:09
so never facing the wind,
168
413886
1300
assim, nunca contra o vento,
07:11
we always can catch the wind from both sides.
169
415186
2115
07:13
But new properties of a sailing boat.
170
417301
2560
07:15
So if you're looking at the boat from this side,
171
419861
4256
07:20
this might remind you of an airplane profile.
172
424117
2208
deve lembrar-se do contorno de um avião.
07:22
An airplane, when you're moving in this direction,
173
426325
2413
Um avião, quando move-se nesta direção
07:24
starts to lift, and that's how it takes off.
174
428738
2265
07:26
Now, if you're taking the same system,
175
431003
2175
Agora, quando você pega o mesmo sistema,
07:29
and you're putting vertical, you're bending,
176
433178
2368
coloca na vertical, dobra-o
07:31
and if you're moving this way forward,
177
435546
2000
e o movimenta para a frente,
07:33
your instinct will tell you that you might go this way,
178
437546
3127
07:36
but if you're moving fast enough,
179
440673
1807
mas se você o movimentar bem rápido,
07:38
you might create what we call lateral lift,
180
442480
2019
07:40
so we could get further or closer to the wind.
181
444499
2925
07:43
Other property is this:
182
447424
2944
Outra característica é:
07:46
A normal sailing boat has a centerboard here
183
450368
3161
07:49
and a rudder at the back,
184
453529
1992
e um leme atrás,
07:51
and these two things are what creates most
185
455521
2550
07:53
resistance and turbulence behind the boat,
186
458071
2654
resistência e turbulência atrás do barco.
07:56
but because this doesn't have either
187
460725
2271
Mas como este não ter nem
07:58
a centerboard or a rudder,
188
462996
1536
uma prancha central nem um leme,
08:00
we hope that if we keep working on this hull design
189
464532
2872
08:03
we can improve and have less resistance.
190
467404
2192
possamos melhorá-lo e ter menos resistência.
08:05
The other thing is, most boats, when they reach
191
469596
2655
08:08
a certain speed, and they are going on waves,
192
472251
2224
08:10
they start to hit and slap on the surface of the water,
193
474475
2439
começam a bater contra a superfície da água,
08:12
and a lot of the energy moving forward is lost.
194
476914
3297
08:16
But if we're going with the flow,
195
480211
2088
Mas se formos a favor da correnteza,
08:18
if we pay attention to natural patterns
196
482299
2136
se prestarmos atenção aos padrões da natureza
08:20
instead of trying to be strong,
197
484435
1611
ao invés de tentarmos ser fortes,
08:21
but if you're going with the flow, we may absorb
198
486046
2399
08:24
a lot of environmental noises, so the wave energy,
199
488445
3197
vários ruídos ambientais, assim a energia das ondas,
08:27
to actually save some energy to move forward.
200
491642
3157
08:30
So we may have developed the technology
201
494799
4151
Então podemos ter desenvolvido a tecnologia
08:34
which is very efficient for pulling something long and heavy,
202
498950
2667
08:37
but the idea is, what is the purpose of technology
203
501617
4217
08:41
if it doesn't reach the right hands?
204
505834
1946
se ela não chega às mãos certas?
08:43
Normal technology or innovation happens like this:
205
507780
2946
Tecnologia ou inovação comuns acontecem assim:
08:46
Somebody has an interesting idea,
206
510726
2430
Alguém tem uma ideia interessante,
08:49
some other scientist or engineer,
207
513156
1962
um outro cientista ou engenheiro
08:51
they take it to the next level, they make a theory about it
208
515118
2504
08:53
and maybe they patent it,
209
517622
1256
e talvez a patenteiem,
08:54
and then some industry will make a contract
210
518878
2536
e depois uma indústria fará um contrato
08:57
of exclusivity to manufacture and sell it,
211
521414
3144
de exclusividade para produzi-la e vendê-la,
09:00
and then, eventually, a buyer will buy it,
212
524558
2096
e depois, eventualmente, um comprador irá comprá-la,
09:02
and we hope that they are going to use [it] for a good purpose.
213
526654
2768
09:05
What we really want is that this innovation happens
214
529422
3696
09:09
continuously. The inventor and engineers
215
533118
2336
continuamente. O inventor e os engenheiros
09:11
and also the manufacturers and everybody
216
535454
1736
09:13
works at the same time, but this would be sterile
217
537190
2384
09:15
if this was happening in a parallel and uncrossed process.
218
539574
3632
09:19
What you really want is not a sequential,
219
543206
2040
09:21
not parallel development.
220
545246
1392
sequencial e não duplicado.
09:22
You want to have a network of innovation.
221
546638
1609
Queremos ter uma rede de inovação.
09:24
You want everybody, like we're doing now,
222
548247
2079
Queremos que todos, como estamos fazendo agora,
09:26
to work at the same time, and that can only happen
223
550326
3169
09:29
if these people all together decide to share the information,
224
553495
3391
09:32
and that's exactly what open hardware is about.
225
556886
2940
09:35
It's to replace competition by collaboration.
226
559826
3669
É trocar a competição pela colaboração.
09:39
It's to transform any new product into a new market.
227
563495
4151
09:43
So what is open hardware?
228
567646
2441
Então o que é hardware aberto?
09:45
Essentially, open hardware is a license.
229
570087
1783
Essencialmente, hardware aberto é uma licença.
09:47
It's just an intellectual property setup.
230
571870
2072
É apenas uma configuração de propriedade intelectual.
09:49
It means that everybody is free to use,
231
573942
3024
09:52
modify and distribute, and in exchange
232
576966
3153
modificar e distribuir, e em troca
09:56
we only ask for two things:
233
580119
1278
só pedimos duas coisas:
09:57
The name is credited -- the name of the project --
234
581397
2095
Que o nome seja creditado -- o nome do projeto --
09:59
and also the people who make improvement,
235
583492
2736
10:02
they share back with the community.
236
586228
1328
compartilhem com a comunidade.
10:03
So it's a very simple condition.
237
587556
1336
Então é uma condição bem simples.
10:04
And I started this project alone in a garage in New Orleans,
238
588892
4024
10:08
but quickly after I wanted to publish and share
239
592916
2176
mas logo depois quis publicar e compartilhar
10:10
this information, so I made a Kickstarter,
240
595092
1744
esta informação, então criei um kickstarter,
10:12
which is a crowd-fundraising platform,
241
596836
2240
10:14
and in about one month we fundraised 30,000 dollars.
242
599076
2432
10:17
With this money, I hired a team of young engineers
243
601508
3312
10:20
from all over the world, and we rented a factory
244
604820
2528
do mundo todo e alugamos uma fábrica
10:23
in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
245
607348
1520
em Roterdã, na Holanda.
10:24
We were peer-learning, we were engineering,
246
608868
3161
10:27
we were making things, prototyping,
247
612029
3183
estávamos fazendo coisas, prototipando,
10:31
but most importantly we were trying our prototypes
248
615212
2225
10:33
in the water as often as possible,
249
617437
1695
na água o mais frequentemente possível,
10:35
to fail as quickly as possible, to learn from.
250
619132
3152
10:38
This is a proud member of Protei from Korea,
251
622284
2512
10:40
and on the right side, this is a multiple-masts
252
624796
2460
10:43
design proposed by a team in Mexico.
253
627256
1933
proposto por uma equipe do México.
10:45
This idea really appealed to Gabriella Levine
254
629189
3185
Esta ideia simplesmente encantou Gabriella Levine
10:48
in New York, and so she decided to prototype
255
632374
2595
em Nova Iorque, e então ela decidiu prototipar
10:50
this idea that she saw, and she documented
256
634969
2530
essa ideia que viu, e documentou
10:53
every step of the process,
257
637499
1429
cada passo do processo,
10:54
and she published it on Instructables,
258
638928
2249
e publicou no Instructables,
10:57
which is a website for sharing inventions.
259
641177
2232
10:59
Less than one week after,
260
643409
1895
Menos de uma semana depois,
11:01
this is a team in Eindhoven, it's a school of engineering.
261
645304
4010
11:05
They made it, but they eventually published
262
649314
2330
Eles a fabricaram, mas eventualmente publicaram
11:07
a simplified design.
263
651644
1124
um design simplificado.
11:08
They also made it into an Instructable,
264
652768
1929
Eles também o colocaram no Instructables,
11:10
and in less than one week, they had
265
654697
1735
e em menos de uma semana, tiveram
11:12
almost 10,000 views, and they got many new friends.
266
656432
2760
quase 10.000 visualizações, e fizeram muitos amigos.
11:15
We're working on also simpler technology,
267
659192
2904
Estamos trabalhando numa tecnologia mais simples,
11:17
not that complex, with younger people
268
662096
1951
não tão complexa, com pessoas mais jovens
11:19
and also older people,
269
664047
1569
e mais velhas também,
11:21
like this dinosaur is from Mexico. (Laughter)
270
665616
3151
como esse dinossauro do México. (Risadas)
11:24
So Protei is now an international network
271
668767
2817
Então, Protei é agora uma rede internacional
11:27
of innovation for selling technology
272
671584
2848
de inovação para venda de tecnologia
11:30
using this shape-shifting hull.
273
674432
1792
usando este casco de formato mutável.
11:32
And what puts us together is that we have a common,
274
676224
4035
11:36
at least, global understanding
275
680259
2789
ao menos, global
11:38
of what the word "business" is, or what it should be.
276
683048
3072
11:42
This is how most work today.
277
686120
2233
É assim que a maioria trabalha hoje.
11:44
Business as usual is saying, what's most important
278
688353
2374
11:46
is to make lots of profit, and you'll be using
279
690727
2239
é ter muitos lucros, e você usará
11:48
technology for that, and people will be your work force,
280
692966
2825
11:51
instrumentalized,
281
695791
1248
instrumentalizadas,
11:52
and environment is usually the last priority.
282
697039
2672
e o meio-ambiente é normalmente a última prioridade.
11:55
It will be just a way to, say, greenwash your audience
283
699711
3878
11:59
and, say, increase your price tag.
284
703589
2231
e, digamos, aumentar o preço nas etiquetas.
12:01
What we're trying to do, or what we believe,
285
705820
2529
12:04
because this is how we believe the world really works,
286
708349
2416
12:06
is that without the environment you have nothing.
287
710765
2170
12:08
We have the people so we need to protect each other, yes,
288
712935
2885
Temos as pessoas então temos que nos proteger, sim.
12:11
and we're a technology company,
289
715820
1664
E somos uma companhia de tecnologia,
12:13
and profit is necessary to make this happen. (Applause)
290
717484
5185
e lucro é necessário para fazer isto acontecer.
12:18
Thank you very much. (Applause)
291
722669
3605
Muito obrigado. (Aplausos)
12:22
If we have the courage to understand or accept
292
726274
4081
12:26
that this actually how the world really works,
293
730355
1920
12:28
and this is the order of priority that we need to choose,
294
732275
3017
12:31
then it makes obvious why we need
295
735292
2141
então fica óbvio o porquê precisamos
12:33
to choose open hardware for developing environmental
296
737433
2339
escolher o hardware aberto para desenvolver tecnologia
12:35
technology, because we need to share information.
297
739772
1880
ambiental, porque precisamos compartilhar as informações.
12:37
What's next for us?
298
741652
2080
O que vem em seguida?
12:39
So, this small machine that you've seen,
299
743732
2535
Esta pequena máquina que vocês viram,
12:42
we're hoping to make small toys like
300
746267
2144
esperamos fazer peças pequenas como
12:44
one-meter remote control Protei that you can upgrade --
301
748411
3493
12:47
so replace the remote control parts by Androids,
302
751904
2986

12:50
so the mobile phone, and Arduino micro-controller,
303

a maioria deles de telefone celular, e micro-controladores Arduino,
12:54
so you could be controlling this

e assim você poderia controlá-lo
12:55
from your mobile phone, your tablet.

so we can test the maximum performance of these machines,
307

para assim testarmos a máxima performance destas máquinas,
13:03
so we can go at very, very high speed.
308
767274
1564
13:04
So imagine yourself.
309
768838
1263
Então imagine.
13:06
You are laying down in a flexible torpedo,

13:23
you don't want a human to be sailing those robots --
