ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David Lang - Maker
David Lang is a maker and the co-founder of OpenROV, a community of ocean lovers who build underwater robots.

Why you should listen

David Lang is a maker whose craving for adventure turned him into an amateur ocean explorer. A few years ago Lang and NASA engineer Eric Stackpole went looking for lost gold (literally) in an underwater cave in the foothills of the Sierra Navada. But they weren't quite sure how to go about it. Without much expertise (or money), the two put initial designs for an underwater robot explorer online. Soon OpenROV was born: a community of citizen ocean explorers who build and constantly improve upon these small remote operated underwater robots.

Lang is also the author of Zero to Maker and a 2013 TED Fellow. He lives on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay.

VOR significa "Veículo Operado Remotamente",

01:27
What we've built isn't unique.
29
75019
2762
O que construímos não é exclusivo.
01:29
It's how we've built it that's really unique.
30
77781
2874
Como nós o construímos
é que foi verdadeiramente exclusivo.
01:32
So I want to give you a quick story
of how it got started.
31
80655
2981
Então, eu quero dividir com vocês a história
de como isso tudo começou.
01:35
So a few years ago, my friend Eric and I
32
83636
2271
Há alguns anos, meu amigo Eric e eu
01:37
decided we wanted to explore this underwater cave
33
85907
2200
decidimos que queríamos
explorar uma caverna submarina
01:40
in the foothills of the Sierras.
34
88107
1858
nos vales das Sierras.
01:41
We had heard this story about lost gold
35
89965
1903
Nós tínhamos escutado histórias de ouro perdido
01:43
from a Gold Rush-era robbery,
and we wanted to go up there.
36
91868
2518
de um assalto da época
da Corrida do Ouro e queríamos ir lá.
01:46
Unfortunately, we didn't have any money
37
94386
1658
Infelizmente, não tínhamos dinheiro algum.
01:48
and we didn't have any tools to do it.
38
96044
1823
e nenhuma ferramenta para isso.
01:49
So Eric had an initial design idea for a robot,
39
97867
3200
Então, Eric teve a ideia inicial de um robô,
01:53
but we didn't have all the parts figured out,
40
101067
2773
mas não tínhamos todas as partes bem definidas,
01:55
so we did what anybody would do in our situation:
41
103840
2212
Então fizemos o que qualquer pessoa
faria em uma situação dessas:
01:58
we asked the Internet for help.
42
106052
2038
Pedimos a ajuda da Internet.
02:00
More specifically, we created this website,
43
108090
2532
Mais especificamente, nós criamos esse site,
02:02
openROV.com, and shared
our intentions and our plans
44
110622
2895
openROV.com, e compartilhamos
nossas intenções e planos.
02:05
For the first few months, it was just Eric and I
45
113517
2390
Nos primeiros meses, era só Eric e eu,
02:07
talking back to each other on the forums,
46
115907
2530
conversando um com outro nos fóruns,
02:10
but pretty soon, we started to get feedback
47
118437
2088
mas logo logo, começamos a receber respostas
02:12
from makers and hobbyists,
48
120525
1843
de inventores e aficionados,
02:14
and then actually professional ocean engineers
49
122368
1994
e até engenheiros oceanográficos profissionais
02:16
who had some suggestions for what we should do.
50
124362
3532
que tinham algumas sugestões
do que deveríamos fazer.
02:19
We kept working on it. We learned a lot.
51
127894
1764
Nós seguimos elaborando o projeto.
Aprendemos muito.
02:21
We kept prototyping, and eventually,
52
129658
2025
Seguimos criando protótipos e finalmente
02:23
we decided we wanted to go
to the cave. We were ready.
53
131683
2719
decidimos que queríamos ir para a caverna
de vez. Estávamos prontos.
02:26
So about that time, our little expedition
became quite a story,
54
134402
3440
Em pouco tempo, nossa pequena
expedição se tornou uma bela história
02:29
and it got picked up in The New York Times.
55
137842
2021
e foi publicada no The New York Times.
02:31
And we were pretty much just overwhelmed
56
139863
1812
Nós ficamos simplesmente abismados
02:33
with interest from people who wanted a kit
57
141675
1783
com o interesse das pessoas
que queriam um kit,
02:35
that they could build this open ROV themselves.
58
143458
2521
para que pudessem montar seus próprios VOR's.
02:37
So we decided to put the project on Kickstarter,
59
145979
3289
Então, decidimos colocar o projeto no Kickstarter,
02:41
and when we did,
60
149268
1232
e quando fizemos isso,
02:42
we raised our funding goal in about two hours,
61
150500
2075
nós levantamos nossa meta
de investimento em cerca de duas horas
02:44
and all of a sudden,
had this money to make these kits.
62
152575
3205
e, de repente, tínhamos
o dinheiro para fazer esses kits.
02:47
But then we had to learn how to make them.
63
155780
2195
Mas aí tivemos que aprender como fazê-los.
02:49
I mean, we had to learn small batch manufacturing.
64
157975
2165
Quero dizer, tínhamos que
aprender a fabricar em lotes.
02:52
So we quickly learned that our garage
65
160140
3260
E rapidamente descobrimos
que nossa garagem
02:55
was not big enough to hold our growing operation.
66
163400
2679
não era grande o suficiente
para nossa crescente operação.
02:58
But we were able to do it, we got all the kits made,
67
166079
2156
Mas conseguimos fazer,
nós fizemos todos os kits,
03:00
thanks a lot to TechShop,
which was a big help to us,
68
168235
2707
graças ao TechShop que foi
de grande ajuda para nós,
03:02
and we shipped these kits all over the world
69
170942
2985
e despachamos esses kits
para todas as partes do mundo,
03:05
just before Christmas of last year,
70
173927
1829
um pouco antes do Natal do ano passado,
03:07
so it was just a few months ago.
71
175756
1782
só alguns meses atrás.
03:09
But we're already starting to get video
72
177538
1908
Mas já estamos começando a receber vídeos
03:11
and photos back from all over the world,
73
179446
1598
e fotos de todos os cantos,
03:13
including this shot from under the ice in Antarctica.
74
181044
3030
incluindo essa foto
de debaixo do gelo da Antártica.
03:16
We've also learned the penguins love robots.
75
184074
3400
Nós também descobrimos
que os pinguins amam robôs.
03:19
(Laughter)
76
187474
2013
(Risos)
03:21
So we're still publishing all the designs online,
77
189487
3168
Então, estamos ainda publicando
todos os projetos online,
03:24
encouraging anyone to build these themselves.
78
192655
2118
encorajando todos a construí-los
por conta própria.
03:26
That's the only way that we could have done this.
79
194773
2403
Essa é a única forma
que poderíamos conseguir isso.
03:29
By being open source, we've created
80
197176
1659
Por ser de código aberto, nós criamos
03:30
this distributed R&D network,
81
198835
2264
uma rede de P&D descentralizada,
03:33
and we're moving faster than
any venture-backed counterpart.
82
201099
3796
e estamos crescendo mais rápido que
qualquer concorrente com investimentos.
03:36
But the actual robot is really only half the story.
83
204895
3205
Mas os robôs são apenas metade da história.
03:40
The real potential, the long term potential,
84
208100
2496
O verdadeiro potencial,
o potencial de longo prazo,
03:42
is with this community of DIY ocean explorers
85
210596
2677
está nessa comunidade de exploradores
do oceano do tipo "faça você mesmo",
03:45
that are forming all over the globe.
86
213273
2396
que está surgindo por todo o mundo.
03:47
What can we discover
87
215669
1534
O que podemos descobrir
03:49
when there's thousands of these devices
88
217203
1904
quando existem milhares desses equipamentos
03:51
roaming the seas?
89
219107
2046
vasculhando os oceanos?
03:53
So you're probably all wondering: the cave.
90
221153
2276
Vocês provavelmente estão
se perguntando: "A caverna.
03:55
Did you find the gold?
91
223429
1826
Você achou o ouro?"
03:57
Well, we didn't find any gold,
92
225255
1552
Bem, não encontramos ouro,
03:58
but we decided that what we found
was much more valuable.
93
226807
3229
mas decidimos que o que encontramos
era muito mais valioso.
04:02
It was the glimpse into a potential future
94
