ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nic Marks - Happiness researcher
Nic Marks gathers evidence about what makes us happy, and uses it to promote policy that puts the well-being of people and the planet first. He's the founder of the Centre for Well-Being at the UK think tank New Economics Foundation (NEF).

Why you should listen

Nic Marks thinks quality of life is measurable, and that true contentment comes not from the accumulation of material wealth but from our connections with others, engagement with the world, and a sense of autonomy. This isn't just theory: a pioneer in the field of well-being research, Marks creates statistical methods to measure happiness, analyzing and interpreting the evidence so that it can be applied to such policy fields as education, sustainable development, healthcare, and economics.

The founder of the Centre for Well-Being, an independent think tank at the New Economics Foundation (NEF), in London, Marks is particularly keen to promote a balance between sustainable development and quality of life. To investigate this, he devised the Happy Planet Index, a global index of human well-being and environmental impact. The results made headlines: People in the world's wealthiest countries, who consume the most of the planet's resources, don't come out on top in terms of well-being. Which raises the question: What purpose does unfettered economic growth serve?

Nic Marks: The Happy Planet Index

Nic Marks: O Índice Planeta Feliz

Filmed:

"I have a nightmare,"

"Eu tenho um pesadelo,"

He said, "I have a dream."

Ele disse, "Eu tenho um sonho."
00:29
And I have a dream.
5
14000
2000
E eu tenho um sonho.
00:31
I have a dream that we can stop thinking
6
16000
2000
00:33
that the future will be a nightmare,
7
18000
3000
que o futuro será um pesadelo,
00:36
and this is going to be a challenge,
8
21000
2000
e que será um desafio,
00:38
because, if you think
9
23000
2000
porque, se você pensa
00:40
of every major blockbusting film of recent times,
10
25000
4000
00:44
nearly all of its visions for humanity
11
29000
3000
quase todas as previsões para a humanidade
00:47
are apocalyptic.
12
32000
2000
são apocalípticas.
00:49
I think this film
13
34000
2000
Acho que este filme
00:51
is one of the hardest watches of modern times, "The Road."
14
36000
3000
"A Estrada."
00:54
It's a beautiful piece of filmmaking,
15
39000
2000
É uma bela produção do cinema,
00:56
but everything is desolate,
16
41000
2000
mas tudo é desolado,
00:58
everything is dead.
17
43000
3000
tudo está morto.
01:01
And just a father and son
18
46000
2000
Apenas um pai e filho
01:03
trying to survive, walking along the road.
19
48000
3000
tentando sobreviver, andando pela estrada.
01:06
And I think the environmental movement
20
51000
2000
E eu acho que o movimento ambiental
01:08
of which I am a part of
21
53000
2000
do qual eu faço parte
01:10
has been complicit
22
55000
2000
tem sido cúmplice
01:12
in creating this vision of the future.
23
57000
2000
em criar essa visão do futuro.
01:14
For too long,
24
59000
2000
Por muito tempo,
01:16
we have peddled a nightmarish vision
25
61000
2000
vimos disseminando essa visão de pesadelo
01:18
of what's going to happen.
26
63000
2000
do que irá acontecer.
01:20
We have focused on the worst-case scenario.
27
65000
3000
Estamos focando no pior cenário possível.
01:23
We have focused on the problems.
28
68000
2000
Temos focado em problemas.
01:25
And we have not thought enough
29
70000
2000
E nós não pensamos o suficiente
01:27
about the solutions.
30
72000
2000
nas soluções.
01:29
We've used fear, if you like,
31
74000
2000
Temos usado o medo, se preferir,
01:31
to grab people's attention.
32
76000
3000
para prender a atenção das pessoas.
01:34
And any psychologist will tell you
33
79000
3000
E qualquer psicólogo lhe dirá
01:37
that fear in the organism
34
82000
2000
que o medo no organismo
01:39
is linked to flight mechanism.
35
84000
2000
está conectado ao mecanismo de fuga.
01:41
It's part of the fight and flight mechanism,
36
86000
3000
01:44
that when an animal is frightened --
37
89000
2000
que quando um animal está amendrotado --
01:46
think of a deer.
38
91000
2000
pense em um veado.
01:48
A deer freezes very, very still,
39
93000
3000
Um veado fica totalmente paralisado,
01:51
poised to run away.
40
96000
2000
preparado para fugir.
01:53
And I think that's what we're doing
41
98000
2000
01:55
when we're asking people to engage with our agenda
42
100000
3000
01:58
around environmental degradation and climate change.
43
103000
3000
contra degradação ambiental e mudanças climáticas.
02:01
People are freezing and running away
44
106000
3000
As pessoas estão congelando e fugindo
02:04
because we're using fear.
45
109000
2000
porque estamos usando o medo.
02:06
And I think the environmental movement has to grow up
46
111000
3000
E acho que o movimento ambiental precisa crescer
02:09
and start to think about
47
114000
2000
e começar a pensar sobre
02:11
what progress is.
48
116000
2000
o que é o progresso.
02:13
What would it be like to be improving the human lot?
49
118000
3000
E como seria melhorar o futuro do homem?
02:16
And one of the problems that we face, I think,
50
121000
2000
02:18
is that the only people that have cornered the market
51
123000
3000
02:21
in terms of progress
52
126000
2000
em termos de progresso
02:23
is a financial definition of what progress is,
53
128000
3000
02:26
an economic definition of what progress is --
54
131000
3000
02:29
that somehow,
55
134000
2000
que de alguma forma,
02:31
if we get the right numbers to go up,
56
136000
2000
se conseguirmos aumentar os números corretos,
02:33
we're going to be better off,
57
138000
3000
seremos melhores,
02:36
whether that's on the stock market,
58
141000
2000
quer seja no mercado de ações,
02:38
whether that's with GDP
59
143000
2000
quer seja no PIB
02:40
and economic growth,
60
145000
2000
e crescimento econômico,
02:42
that somehow life is going to get better.
61
147000
2000
02:44
This is somehow appealing to human greed
62
149000
3000
02:47
instead of fear --
63
152000
2000
em vez de medo --
02:49
that more is better.
64
154000
2000
a ideia de que mais é melhor.
02:51
Come on. In the Western world, we have enough.
65
156000
3000
Qual é. No mundo ocidental, nós temos o suficiente.
02:54
Maybe some parts of the world don't, but we have enough.
66
159000
3000
02:57
And we've know for a long time that this is not a good measure
67
162000
3000
03:00
of the welfare of nations.
68
165000
2000
da riqueza das nações.
03:02
In fact, the architect of our national accounting system,
69
167000
3000
Na verdade, o arquiteto do nosso sistema contábil nacional,
03:05
Simon Kuznets, in the 1930s,
70
170000
3000
Simion Kuznets, na década de 30,
03:08
said that, "A nation's welfare
71
173000
2000
disse que, "A riqueza de uma nação
03:10
can scarcely be inferred from their national income."
72
175000
3000
03:13
But we've created a national accounting system
73
178000
2000
Mas nós criamos um sistema contábil nacional
03:15
which is firmly based on production
74
180000
2000
que está firmemente baseado na produção
03:17
and producing stuff.
75
182000
2000
e produção de bens.
03:19
And indeed, this is probably historical, and it had its time.
76
184000
3000
03:22
In the second World War, we needed to produce a lot of stuff.
77
187000
3000
Na Segunda Guerra Mundial, nós precisamos produzir muitas coisas.
03:25
And indeed, we were so successful at producing certain types of stuff
78
190000
3000
03:28
that we destroyed a lot of Europe, and we had to rebuild it afterwards.
79
193000
3000
03:31
And so our national accounting system
80
196000
2000
E então nosso sistema contábil nacional
03:33
became fixated on what we can produce.
81
198000
3000
03:36
But as early as 1968,
82
201000
3000
Mas no início de 1968,
03:39
this visionary man, Robert Kennedy,
83
204000
3000
este homem visionário, Robert Kennedy,
03:42
at the start of his ill-fated presidential campaign,
84
207000
3000
no início de sua infeliz campanha presidencial,
03:45
gave the most eloquent deconstruction
85
210000
3000
deu a mais eloquente descontrução
03:48
of gross national product
86
213000
2000
do produto nacional bruto
03:50
that ever has been.
87
215000
2000
que já existiu.
03:52
And he finished his talk with the phrase,
88
217000
3000
03:55
that, "The gross national product
89
220000
2000
dizendo que "O produto nacional bruto
03:57
measures everything except that
90
222000
3000
mede tudo, exceto aquilo
04:00
which makes life worthwhile."
91
225000
2000
que faz a vida valer a pena."
04:02
How crazy is that? That our measure of progress,
92
227000
3000
Que loucura é essa? Que a medida do nosso progresso,
04:05
our dominant measure of progress in society,
93
230000
3000
nossa medida dominante do progresso na sociedade,
04:08
is measuring everything
94
233000
2000
está medindo tudo
04:10
except that which makes life worthwhile?
95
235000
3000
exceto aquilo que faz a vida valer a pena?
04:13
I believe, if Kennedy was alive today,
96
238000
3000
04:16
he would be asking statisticians such as myself
97
241000
3000
ele estaria pedindo a estatísticos como eu
04:19
to go out and find out
98
244000
2000
para sair e descobrir
04:21
what makes life worthwhile.
99
246000
2000
o que faz a vida valer a pena.
04:23
He'd be asking us to redesign
100
248000
2000
Ele estaria nos pedindo para redesenhar
04:25
our national accounting system
101
250000
2000
nosso sistema contábil nacional
04:27
to be based upon
102
252000
2000
para que se baseasse
04:29
such important things as social justice,
103
254000
3000
em coisas importantes como a justiça social,
04:32
sustainability
104
257000
2000
sustentabilidade
04:34
and people's well-being.
105
259000
2000
e a qualidade de vida do povo.
04:36
And actually, social scientists have already gone out
106
261000
2000
E na verdade, cientistas sociais já saíram
04:38
and asked these questions around the world.
107
263000
2000
e fizeram essas perguntas ao redor do mundo.
04:40
This is from a global survey.
108
265000
2000
Isto é de uma pesquisa global.
04:42
It's asking people, what do they want.
109
267000
3000
04:45
And unsurprisingly, people all around the world
110
270000
3000
E surpreendentemente, as pessoas pelo mundo
04:48
say that what they want
111
273000
2000
dizem que o que elas querem
04:50
is happiness, for themselves,
112
275000
2000
é felicidade, para elas mesmas,
04:52
for their families, their children,
113
277000
2000
para suas famílias, para suas crianças,
04:54
their communities.
114
279000
2000
suas comunidades.
04:56
Okay, they think money is slightly important.
115
281000
2000
04:58
It's there, but it's not nearly as important as happiness,
116
283000
3000
05:01
and it's not nearly as important as love.
117
286000
3000
e não é tão importante quanto o amor.
05:04
We all need to love and be loved in life.
118
289000
3000
Todos nós precisamos amar e sermos amados na vida.
05:07
It's not nearly as important as health.
119
292000
2000
Não é tão importante quanto a saúde.
05:09
We want to be healthy and live a full life.
120
294000
3000
05:12
These seem to be natural human aspirations.
121
297000
3000
Essas parecem ser aspirações humanas normais.
05:15
Why are statisticians not measuring these?
122
300000
3000
05:18
Why are we not thinking of the progress of nations in these terms,
123
303000
3000
05:21
instead of just how much stuff we have?
124
306000
3000
em vez de quanta coisa nós possuímos?
05:24
And really, this is what I've done with my adult life --
125
309000
3000
05:27
is think about how do we measure happiness,
126
312000
2000
05:29
how do we measure well-being,
127
314000
2000
como medimos o bem-estar,
05:31
how can we do that within environmental limits.
128
316000
2000
05:33
And we created, at the organization that I work for,
129
318000
2000
05:35
the New Economics Foundation,
130
320000
2000
a Nova Fundação de Economia,
05:37
something we call the Happy Planet Index,
131
322000
3000
05:40
because we think people should be happy and the planet should be happy.
132
325000
3000
05:43
Why don't we create a measure of progress that shows that?
133
328000
3000
05:46
And what we do,
134
331000
2000
E o que fazemos,
05:48
is we say that the ultimate outcome of a nation
135
333000
2000
05:50
is how successful is it
136
335000
2000
e o quão bem sucedido é
05:52
at creating happy and healthy lives for its citizens.
137
337000
3000
05:55
That should be the goal
138
340000
2000
Esse deveria ser o objetivo
05:57
of every nation on the planet.
139
342000
2000
de cada nação no planeta.
05:59
But we have to remember
140
344000
2000
Mas nós temos que lembrar
06:01
that there's a fundamental input to that,
141
346000
3000
que há um registro fundamental para isso,
06:04
and that is how many of the planet's resources we use.
142
349000
3000
e é quantos recursos do planeta utilizamos.
06:07
We all have one planet. We all have to share it.
143
352000
3000
Todos nós temos um planeta. Todos nós devemos compartilhá-lo.
06:10
It is the ultimate scarce resource,
144
355000
3000
Isto é o recurso mais escasso.
06:13
the one planet that we share.
145
358000
3000
o único planeta que compartilhamos.
06:16
And economics is very interested in scarcity.
146
361000
3000
06:19
When it has a scarce resource
147
364000
2000
Quando há algum recurso escasso
06:21
that it wants to turn into
148
366000
2000
que deseja que se transforme
06:23
a desirable outcome,
149
368000
2000
em um resultado desejável,
06:25
it thinks in terms of efficiency.
150
370000
3000
pensa-se em termos de eficiência.
06:28
It thinks in terms of how much bang do we get for our buck.
151
373000
3000
06:31
And this is a measure of how much well-being
152
376000
2000
06:33
we get for our planetary resource use.
153
378000
3000
06:36
It is an efficiency measure.
154
381000
2000
É uma medida eficiente.
06:38
And probably the easiest way to show you that,
155
383000
3000
06:41
is to show you this graph.
156
386000
2000
para mostrar-lhe este gráfico.
06:43
Running horizontally along the graph,
157
388000
3000
Seguindo horizontalmente ao longo do gráfico,
06:46
is "ecological footprint,"
158
391000
2000
é "pegada ecológica",
06:48
which is a measure of how much resources we use
159
393000
3000
06:51
and how much pressure we put on the planet.
160
396000
2000
06:53
More is bad.
161
398000
2000
Mais é ruim.
06:55
Running vertically upwards,
162
400000
2000
Seguindo verticalmente para cima,
06:57
is a measure called "happy life years."
163
402000
2000
06:59
It's about the well-being of nations.
164
404000
2000
Trata-se do bem-estar das nações.
07:01
It's like a happiness adjusted life-expectancy.
165
406000
3000
07:04
It's like quality and quantity of life in nations.
166
409000
3000
07:07
And the yellow dot there you see, is the global average.
167
412000
3000
E o ponto amarelo que veem aqui, é a média global.
07:10
Now, there's a huge array of nations
168
415000
2000
Agora, há um grande grupo de nações
07:12
around that global average.
169
417000
2000
em torno dessa média global.
07:14
To the top right of the graph,
170
419000
3000
No topo do lado direito do gráfico,
07:17
are countries which are doing reasonably well and producing well-being,
171
422000
3000
07:20
but they're using a lot of planet to get there.
172
425000
2000
07:22
They are the U.S.A.,
173
427000
2000
Eles são os Estados Unidos,
07:24
other Western countries going across in those triangles
174
429000
3000
outros países ocidentais ultrapassando aqueles triângulos
07:27
and a few Gulf states in there actually.
175
432000
2000
e uns poucos países do Golfo realmente.
07:29
Conversely, at the bottom left of the graph,
176
434000
3000
07:32
are countries that are not producing much well-being --
177
437000
3000
07:35
typically, sub-Saharan Africa.
178
440000
3000
tipicamente, a Africa Subsaariana.
07:38
In Hobbesian terms,
179
443000
2000
Em termos Hobesianos,
07:40
life is short and brutish there.
180
445000
2000
a vida é curta e bruta lá.
07:42
The average life expectancy in many of these countries
181
447000
3000
07:45
is only 40 years.
182
450000
3000
é de somente 40 anos.
07:48
Malaria, HIV/AIDS
183
453000
2000
Malaria, HIV/AIDS
07:50
are killing a lot of people
184
455000
2000
estão matando pessoas
07:52
in these regions of the world.
185
457000
2000
nessas regiões do mundo.
07:54
But now for the good news!
186
459000
2000
Mas agora as boas notícias!
07:56
There are some countries up there, yellow triangles,
187
461000
2000
Há alguns países aqui, triângulos amarelos,
07:58
that are doing better than global average,
188
463000
2000
que estão melhores que a média global,
08:00
that are heading up towards the top left of the graph.
189
465000
2000
08:02
This is an aspirational graph.
190
467000
2000
Este é um gráfico de aspiração.
08:04
We want to be top left, where good lives don't cost the earth.
191
469000
3000
Nós queremos estar no topo esquerdo, onde vidas boas não custam a terra.
08:07
They're Latin American.
192
472000
2000
Eles são a América Latina.
08:09
The country on its own up at the top
193
474000
2000
O país no seu próprio topo
08:11
is a place I haven't been to.
194
476000
2000
08:13
Maybe some of you have.
195
478000
2000
Talvez alguns de vocês tenham estado.
08:15
Costa Rica.
196
480000
2000
Costa Rica.
08:19
Costa Rica --
197
484000
2000
Costa Rica --
08:21
average life expectancy is 78-and-a-half years.
198
486000
3000
a expectativa de vida é de 78 anos e meio.
08:24
That is longer than in the USA.
199
489000
3000
Que é maior que dos EUA.
08:28
They are, according to the latest Gallup world poll,
200
493000
3000
08:31
the happiest nation on the planet --
201
496000
3000
a nação mais feliz do planeta --
08:34
than anybody; more than Switzerland and Denmark.
202
499000
3000
08:37
They are the happiest place.
203
502000
2000
Eles estão no local mais feliz.
08:39
They are doing that
204
504000
2000
Eles estão fazendo isso
08:41
on a quarter of the resources
205
506000
2000
com um quarto dos recursos
08:43
that are used typically in [the] Western world --
206
508000
3000
que usualmente é utilizado no mundo ocidental --
08:46
a quarter of the resources.
207
511000
3000
um quarto dos recursos.
08:49
What's going on there?
208
514000
3000
O que está acontecendo lá?
08:52
What's happening in Costa Rica?
209
517000
2000
O que está ocorrendo na Costa Rica?
08:54
We can look at some of the data.
210
519000
2000
Podemos olhar alguns dados.
08:56
99 percent of their electricity comes from renewable resources.
211
521000
3000
99% de sua eletricidade provém de recursos renováveis.
08:59
Their government is one of the first to commit
212
524000
2000
O governo deles é o primeiro a se comprometer
09:01
to be carbon neutral by 2021.
213
526000
3000
a ser neutro em carbono até 2021.
09:04
They abolished the army
214
529000
3000
Eles aboliram o exército
09:07
in 1949 --
215
532000
2000
em 1949 --
09:09
1949.
216
534000
2000
1949.
09:11
And they invested in social programs --
217
536000
2000
E eles investiram em programas sociais --
09:13
health and education.
218
538000
2000
saúde e educação.
09:15
They have one of the highest literacy rates in Latin America
219
540000
3000
09:18
and in the world.
220
543000
2000
e no mundo.
09:20
And they have that Latin vibe, don't they.
221
545000
2000
09:22
They have the social connectedness.
222
547000
2000
Eles possuem essa conectividade social.
09:24
(Laughter)
223
549000
2000
Risos
09:26
The challenge is, that possibly -- and the thing we might have to think about --
224
551000
3000
09:29
is that the future
225
554000
2000
é que o futuro
09:31
might not be North American,
226
556000
2000
pode não estar na América do Norte,
09:33
might not be Western European.
227
558000
2000
pode não estar na Europa Ocidental.
09:35
It might be Latin American.
228
560000
3000
Pode estar na América Latina.
09:38
And the challenge, really,
229
563000
2000
E o desafio, realmente,
09:40
is to pull the global average up here.
230
565000
3000
é puxar a média global até aqui.
09:43
That's what we need to do.
231
568000
2000
Isso é o que precisamos fazer.
09:45
And if we're going to do that,
232
570000
2000
E se vamos fazer isso,
09:47
we need to pull countries from the bottom,
233
572000
3000
precisamos puxar os países do fundo,
09:50
and we need to pull countries from the right of the graph.
234
575000
3000
e nós precisamos puxar países da parte direita do gráfico.
09:53
And then we're starting to create a happy planet.
235
578000
3000
E então começaremos a criar um planeta feliz.
09:56
That's one way of looking at it.
236
581000
2000
Esta é uma forma de se olhar.
09:58
Another way of looking at it is looking at time trends.
237
583000
2000
10:00
We don't have good data going back for every country in the world,
238
585000
3000
10:03
but for some of the richest countries, the OECD group, we do.
239
588000
3000
10:06
And this is the trend in well-being over that time,
240
591000
3000
10:09
a small increase,
241
594000
2000
um pequeno aumento,
10:11
but this is the trend in ecological footprint.
242
596000
2000
10:13
And so in strict happy-planet methodology,
243
598000
3000
E assim em rigorosa metodologia planeta feliz,
10:16
we've become less efficient
244
601000
2000
nós nos tornamos menos eficientes
10:18
at turning our ultimate scarce resource
245
603000
2000
em transformar nosso último e escasso recurso
10:20
into the outcome we want to.
246
605000
3000
no resultado que nós queremos.
10:23
And the point really is, is that I think,
247
608000
3000
E o ponto realmente é, é o que eu acho,
10:26
probably everybody in this room
248
611000
2000
provavelmente todos nesta sala
10:28
would like society to get to 2050
249
613000
2000
gostariam que a sociedade chegasse a 2050
10:30
without an apocalyptic
250
615000
3000
sem algo apocalíptico
10:33
something happening.
251
618000
2000
acontecer.
10:35
It's actually not very long away.
252
620000
2000
Na verdade não está tão distante.
10:37
It's half a human lifetime away.
253
622000
2000
10:39
A child entering school today
254
624000
2000
Uma criança entrando na escola hoje
10:41
will be my age in 2050.
255
626000
2000
terá minha idade em 2050.
10:43
This is not the very distant future.
256
628000
3000
Isto não é um futuro tão distante.
10:46
This is what the U.K. government target
257
631000
3000
Isto é o que o governo do Reino Unido planeja
10:49
on carbon and greenhouse emissions looks like.
258
634000
3000
10:53
And I put it to you, that is not business as usual.
259
638000
3000
10:56
That is changing our business.
260
641000
2000
Isso está mudando nossos negócios.
10:58
That is changing the way we create our organizations,
261
643000
3000
11:01
we do our government policy and we live our lives.
262
646000
3000
fazemos nossas políticas governamentais e vivemos nossas vidas.
11:04
And the point is,
263
649000
2000
E o ponto é,
11:06
we need to carry on increasing well-being.
264
651000
2000
precisamos continuar a aumentar o bem-estar.
11:08
No one can go to the polls
265
653000
2000
Ninguém pode ir às urnas
11:10
and say that quality of life is going to reduce.
266
655000
3000
11:13
None of us, I think,
267
658000
2000
Nenhum de nós, eu acho,
11:15
want human progress to stop.
268
660000
2000
quer que o progresso humano pare.
11:17
I think we want it to carry on.
269
662000
2000
Acho que queremos prosseguir.
11:19
I think we want the lot of humanity to keep on increasing.
270
664000
2000
11:21
And I think this is where climate change skeptics and deniers come in.
271
666000
3000
11:24
I think this is what they want. They want quality of life to keep increasing.
272
669000
3000
11:27
They want to hold on to what they've got.
273
672000
3000
Querem manter o que já conseguiram.
11:30
And if we're going to engage them,
274
675000
2000
E se vamos engajá-los,
11:32
I think that's what we've got to do.
275
677000
2000
acho que é isso que devemos fazer.
11:34
And that means we have to really increase efficiency even more.
276
679000
3000
11:37
Now that's all very easy to draw graphs and things like that,
277
682000
3000
11:40
but the point is we need to turn those curves.
278
685000
3000
11:43
And this is where I think we can take a leaf
279
688000
2000
11:45
out of systems theory, systems engineers,
280
690000
3000
da teoria de sistemas, sistemas de engenharia,
11:48
where they create feedback loops,
281
693000
2000
onde eles criaram círculos de feedback,
11:50
put the right information at the right point of time.
282
695000
3000
colocar a informação correta no ponto correto do tempo.
11:53
Human beings are very motivated by the "now."
283
698000
3000
Seres humanos são muito motivados pelo "agora".
11:56
You put a smart meter in your home,
284
701000
2000
11:58
and you see how much electricity you're using right now,
285
703000
2000
e veja quanta eletricidade você está utilizando nesse exato momento,
12:00
how much it's costing you,
286
705000
2000
quanto está te custando,
12:02
your kids go around and turn the lights off pretty quickly.
287
707000
3000
seus filhos vão desligar as luzes rapidinho.
12:05
What would that look like for society?
288
710000
3000
O que isso parece à sociedade?
12:08
Why is it, on the radio news every evening,
289
713000
2000
12:10
I hear the FTSE 100, the Dow Jones, the dollar pound ratio --
290
715000
3000
12:13
I don't even know which way the dollar pound ratio should go to be good news.
291
718000
3000
12:16
And why do I hear that?
292
721000
2000
E por que eu ouço isso?
12:18
Why don't I hear how much energy Britain used yesterday,
293
723000
3000
12:21
or American used yesterday?
294
726000
2000
ou os Estados Unidos usaram ontem?
12:23
Did we meet our three percent annual target
295
728000
2000
Alcançamos nossa meta anual de três porcento
12:25
on reducing carbon emissions?
296
730000
2000
na redução de emissão de carbono?
12:27
That's how you create a collective goal.
297
732000
2000
12:29
You put it out there into the media and start thinking about it.
298
734000
3000
12:32
And we need positive feedback loops
299
737000
3000
E nós precisamos de giros positivos de feedback
12:35
for increasing well-being
300
740000
2000
para aumentar o bem-estar
12:37
At a government level, they might create national accounts of well-being.
301
742000
3000
12:40
At a business level, you might look at the well-being of your employees,
302
745000
3000
12:43
which we know is really linked to creativity,
303
748000
2000
12:45
which is linked to innovation,
304
750000
2000
o qual está ligado à inovação,
12:47
and we're going to need a lot of innovation to deal with those environmental issues.
305
752000
3000
12:50
At a personal level, we need these nudges too.
306
755000
3000
12:54
Maybe we don't quite need the data, but we need reminders.
307
759000
3000
12:57
In the U.K., we have a strong public health message
308
762000
3000
13:00
on five fruit and vegetables a day
309
765000
2000
sobre comer 5 frutas e vegetais por dia
13:02
and how much exercise we should do -- never my best thing.
310
767000
3000
13:05
What are these for happiness?
311
770000
3000
13:08
What are the five things that you should do every day
312
773000
2000
13:10
to be happier?
313
775000
2000
para ser feliz?
13:12
We did a project for the Government Office of Science a couple of years ago,
314
777000
3000
13:15
a big program called the Foresight program --
315
780000
3000
um grande programa chamado programa Foresight --
13:18
lots and lots of people -- involved lots of experts --
316
783000
2000
muitas e muitas pessoas -- muitos especialistas envolvidos --
13:20
everything evidence based -- a huge tome.
317
785000
3000
tudo baseado em evidências -- uma enciclopédia.
13:23
But a piece of work we did was on: what five positive actions can you do
318
788000
3000
13:26
to improve well-being in your life?
319
791000
2000
para melhorar o bem-estar na sua vida?
13:28
And the point of these is
320
793000
2000
E o ponto disso é
13:30
they are, not quite, the secrets of happiness,
321
795000
2000
13:32
but they are things that I think happiness will flow out the side from.
322
797000
3000
13:35
And the first of these is to connect,
323
800000
3000
E a primeira delas é conectar,
13:38
is that your social relationships
324
803000
2000
seus relacionamentos sociais
13:40
are the most important cornerstones of your life.
325
805000
3000
13:43
Do you invest the time with your loved ones
326
808000
2000
13:45
that you could do, and energy?
327
810000
2000
que você poderia investir, e energia?
13:47
Keep building them.
328
812000
2000
Continue investindo.
13:49
The second one is be active.
329
814000
2000
A segunda é ser ativo.
13:51
The fastest way out of a bad mood:
330
816000
3000
13:54
step outside, go for a walk, turn the radio on and dance.
331
819000
3000
saia, vá dar uma caminhada, ligue o rádio e dance.
13:57
Being active is great for our positive mood.
332
822000
3000
14:00
The third one is take notice.
333
825000
3000
A terceira é notar.
14:03
How aware are you of things going on around the world,
334
828000
3000
14:06
the seasons changing, people around you?
335
831000
3000
14:09
Do you notice what's bubbling up for you and trying to emerge?
336
834000
3000
14:12
Based on a lot of evidence for mindfulness,
337
837000
2000
Baseado em muitas evidências por atenção,
14:14
cognitive behavioral therapy,
338
839000
2000
terapia de comportamento cognitivo,
14:16
[very] strong for our well being.
339
841000
3000
[muito] forte para nosso bem estar.
14:19
The fourth is keep learning
340
844000
2000
A quarta é continuar aprendendo
14:21
and keep is important --
341
846000
2000
e manter é importante --
14:23
learning throughout the whole life course.
342
848000
2000
14:25
Older people who keep learning and are curious,
343
850000
3000
14:28
they have much better health outcomes than those who start to close down.
344
853000
3000
14:31
But it doesn't have to be formal learning; it's not knowledge based.
345
856000
2000
14:33
It's more curiosity.
346
858000
2000
É mais curiosidade.
14:35
It can be learning to cook a new dish,
347
860000
3000
14:38
picking up an instrument you forgot as a child.
348
863000
2000
14:40
Keep learning.
349
865000
2000
Continuar aprendendo.
14:42
And the final one
350
867000
2000
E a última
14:44
is that most anti-economic of activities,
351
869000
2000
é a mais "anti-economia" das atividades,
14:46
but give.
352
871000
2000
doar.
14:48
Our generosity, our altruism,
353
873000
2000
Nossa generosidade, nosso altruismo,
14:50
our compassion,
354
875000
2000
nossa compaixão,
14:52
are all hardwired
355
877000
2000
tudo está interconectado
14:54
to the reward mechanism in our brain.
356
879000
2000
ao mecanismo de recompensa do nosso cérebro.
14:56
We feel good if we give.
357
881000
2000
Nos sentimos bem se damos algo.
14:58
You can do an experiment where you give
358
883000
2000
Podemos fazer uma experiência onde você dá
15:00
two groups of people a hundred dollars in the morning.
359
885000
3000
15:03
You tell one of them to spend it on themselves
360
888000
3000
15:06
and one on other people.
361
891000
2000
15:08
You measure their happiness at the end of the day,
362
893000
2000
Meça a felicidade deles no final do dia,
15:10
those that have gone and spent on other people are much happier
363
895000
2000
15:12
that those that spent it on themselves.
364
897000
3000
do que aqueles que gastaram consigo.
15:15
And these five ways,
365
900000
2000
E essas cinco formas,
15:17
which we put onto these handy postcards,
366
902000
3000
que colocamos nesses postais,
15:20
I would say, don't have to cost the earth.
367
905000
3000
Eu diria, elas não precisam custar a terra.
15:23
They don't have any carbon content.
368
908000
2000
Elas não possuem nenhum conteúdo de carbono.
15:25
They don't need a lot of material goods to be satisfied.
369
910000
3000
15:29
And so I think it's really quite feasible
370
914000
2000
E eu penso que é muito plausível
15:31
that happiness does not cost the earth.
371
916000
2000
que a felicidade não custe a terra.
15:33
Now, Martin Luther King,
372
918000
2000
Agora, Martin Luther King,
15:35
on the eve of his death,
373
920000
2000
à beira de sua morte,
15:37
gave an incredible speech.
374
922000
2000
deu um discurso incrível.
15:39
He said, "I know there are challenges ahead,
375
924000
3000
Ele disse, "Eu sei que existem desafios à frente,
15:42
there may be trouble ahead,
376
927000
2000
que pode haver problemas adiante,
15:44
but I fear no one. I don't care.
377
929000
2000
mas não os temo. Não me importo.
15:46
I have been to the mountain top,
378
931000
3000
Estive no alto da montanha,
15:49
and I have seen the Promised Land."
379
934000
2000
e vi a Terra Prometida."
15:51
Now, he was a preacher,
380
936000
2000
Agora, ele foi um pregador,
15:53
but I believe the environmental movement
381
938000
2000
mas eu acredito que o movimento ambiental
15:55
and, in fact, the business community, government,
382
940000
3000
15:58
needs to go to the top of the mountain top,
383
943000
3000
precisam subir ao topo da montanha,
16:01
and it needs to look out,
384
946000
2000
e precisam olhar,
16:03
and it needs to see the Promised Land,
385
948000
2000
e ver a Terra Prometida,
16:05
or the land of promise,
386
950000
2000
ou a terra da promessa,
16:07
and it needs to have a vision
387
952000
2000
e precisam ter uma visão
16:09
of a world that we all want.
388
954000
3000
de um mundo que todos nós queremos.
16:12
And not only that, we need to create a Great Transition
389
957000
2000
16:14
to get there,
390
959000
2000
para chegar lá,
16:16
and we need to pave that great transition with good things.
391
961000
3000
e precisamos pavimentar a grande transição com coisas boas.
16:19
Human beings want to be happy.
392
964000
3000
Seres humanos querem ser felizes.
16:22
Pave them with the five ways.
393
967000
2000
Prepare-os com as cinco formas.
16:24
And we need to have signposts
394
969000
2000
E precisamos ter sinalizadores
16:26
gathering people together and pointing them --
395
971000
2000
reunir pessoas e direcioná-los --
16:28
something like the Happy Planet Index.
396
973000
2000
algo como o Índice Planeta Feliz.
16:30
And then I believe
397
975000
2000
E então eu acredito
16:32
that we can all create a world we all want,
398
977000
2000
16:34
where happiness does not cost the earth.
399
979000
3000
onde a felicidade não custe a terra.
