ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Franco Sacchi - Filmmaker
Franco Sacchi is the director of This Is Nollywood, the story of Nigeria's massive homegrown film industry.

Why you should listen

Franco Sacchi's film This Is Nollywood represents one of the most compelling and profound stories of self-generated storytelling and commerce in the developing world. Out of nothing springs an industry that is reputed to be the third-largest film industry worldwide. This, says the Zambia-born, Italy-bred documentary filmmaker, is an irresistible story for those looking view Africa from a different perspective.

From the Director's Statement:

We agreed immediately that African actors, directors, and producers should tell their own story in our film without commentary from us or other westerners. Of course, we filmed and edited the Nollywood story with our own sensibilities, but our greatest hope is that the authentic voices of the Nigerian filmmakers will be heard.

Nollywood filmmakers are conscious of the responsibility they have toward their society -- director Bond Emeruwa says they feel an obligation to "put a message in there." But the production of each movie is also an adventure -- overcoming hurdles unimaginable in the West, racing against an impossibly short clock.

100000
3000
02:01
a few少數 things about my personal個人 life,
21
103000
3000
02:04
because I think there is a connection連接.
22
106000
6000
02:10
My grandfather祖父 lived生活 most of his life and is buried隱藏 in Zambia贊比亞.
23
112000
5000
我的祖父大半輩子都住在尚比亞,也葬在尚比亞;
02:15
My father父親 also lived生活 most of his adult成人 life in East Africa非洲.
24
117000
6000
02:21
And I was born天生 in Zambia贊比亞.
25
123000
4000

02:25
Even though雖然 I left when I was only three years年份 old,
26
127000
2000
02:27
I really felt that Africa非洲 was this big part部分 of my life.
27
129000
5000
02:32
And it really was a place地點 where I learned學到了 to walk步行.
28
134000
5000
02:37
I think I uttered發話 the first words,
29
139000

02:41
and my family家庭 bought their first home.

02:47
and one of the things that I remember記得 the most
32

is my family家庭 having this hard time to share分享 stories故事.
33
152000
4000
02:54
It seemed似乎 that for our neighbors鄰居 and friends朋友,
34
156000
3000
02:57
Africa非洲 was either this exotic異國情調 place地點, this imaginary假想 land土地
35
159000
6000
03:03
that probably大概 exists存在 only in their imagination想像力,
36
165000
3000
03:06
or the place地點 of horror恐怖, famine飢荒.
37
168000
5000
03:11
And so we were always caught抓住 in this stereotype鉛板.
38
173000
4000
03:15
And I remember記得 really this desire慾望 to talk about Africa非洲
39
177000
3000
03:18
as a place地點 where we lived生活 and people live生活 and go about their lives生活,
40
180000
4000
03:22
and have dreams like we all have.
41
184000
3000

04:00
And we really look how digital數字 technology技術 is changing改變,
50
222000
4000
04:04
and how young年輕, independent獨立 filmmakers電影製片人

In the meantime與此同時, we had to cover Nollywood諾萊塢,

06:33
Here is that you make these films影片,
95
375000
2000
06:35
it sells塞爾斯, you jump onto the location位置 again to make another另一個 film電影,
96
377000
4000

07:05
So if you're making製造 a movie電影, no matter what your topic話題 is,
103
407000
3000
07:08
put in a message信息 in there.

07:20
it's not about the quality質量 at the moment時刻 -- the quality質量 is coming未來.
108
422000
3000
07:23
I mean, there are those films影片 that people are making製造 for quality質量,
109
425000
4000
07:27
but the first thing you have to remember記得 about this society社會
110
429000
3000
07:30
is that Africa非洲 still has people that live生活 on one dollar美元 a day,
111
432000
4000
07:34

11:35
So many許多 themes主題 in this story故事.
176
677000
2000
11:37
I just can't tell you -- there’s one thing I want to tell you.
177
679000
3000
11:40
I spent花費, you know, several一些 weeks with all these actors演員, producers生產商,
178
682000
5000
11:45
and the problems問題 they have to go through通過 are unimaginable不可思議
179
687000
3000
11:48
for, you know, a Westerner西方人, a filmmaker電影製片人 who works作品 in America美國 or in Europe歐洲.
180
690000
4000
11:52
But always with a smile微笑, always with an enthusiasm熱情,
181
694000
4000
11:56
that is incredible難以置信.
182
698000
2000
11:58
Werner維爾納 Herzog赫爾佐格, the German德語 filmmaker電影製片人 said,
183
700000
2000
12:00
"I need to make movies電影 like you need oxygen."
184
702000
5000
12:05
And I think they’re回覆 breathing呼吸.
185
707000
2000
12:07
The Nigerian尼日利亞 filmmakers電影製片人 really, really, are doing what they like.
186
709000
4000
12:11
And so it's a very, very important重要 thing for them,
187
713000
4000
12:15
and for their audiences觀眾.
188
717000
1000
12:16
A woman女人 told me, "When I see a Nollywood諾萊塢 film電影,
189
718000
3000
12:19
I can relax放鬆, I really -- I can breathe呼吸 better."
190
721000
4000
12:23
There is also another另一個 very important重要 thing
191
725000
2000
12:25
that I hope希望 will resonate諧振 with this audience聽眾.
192
727000
2000
12:27
It’s technology技術. I’m very interested有興趣 in it
193
729000
3000
12:30
and I really think that the digital數字 non-linear非線性 editing編輯 has slashed下調, you know,
194
732000
7000
12:37
the cost成本 now is a fraction分數 of what it used to be.
195
739000
2000
12:43
And this has unleashed如虎添翼 tremendous巨大 energy能源.
197
745000
3000
12:46
And guess猜測 what?
198
748000
2000
12:48
We didn’t have to tell to the Nigerian尼日利亞 filmmakers電影製片人.
199
750000
2000
12:50
They understood了解 it, they embraced擁抱 the technology技術
200
752000
3000
12:53
and they run with it, and they’re回覆 successful成功.
201
755000
2000
12:55
I hope希望 that the Nollywood諾萊塢 phenomenon現象 will go both ways方法.
202
757000
5000
13:00
I hope希望 it will inspire啟發 other African非洲人 nations國家 to embrace擁抱 the technology技術,
203
762000
5000
13:05
look at the Nigerian尼日利亞 model模型, make their films影片, create創建 jobs工作,
204
767000
3000
13:08
create創建 a narrative敘述 for the population人口, something to identify鑑定,
205
770000
4000
13:12
something positive, something that really is psychological心理 relief浮雕
206
774000
3000
13:15
and it's part部分 of the culture文化.
207
777000
2000
13:17
But I really think this is a phenomenon現象 that can inspire啟發 us.
208
779000
5000
13:22
I really think it goes both ways方法.
209
784000
2000
13:24
Filmmakers製片人, friends朋友 of mine, they look at Nollywood諾萊塢 and they say,
210
786000
4000
13:28
"Wow, they are doing what we really want to do,
211
790000
2000
13:30
and make a buck降壓 and live生活 with this job工作."
212
792000
3000
13:33
So I really think it’s a lesson
213
795000
1000
13:34
that we're actually其實 learning學習 from them.
214
796000
2000
13:36
And there's one thing, one small challenge挑戰 that I have for you,
215
798000
3000
13:39
and should make us reflect反映 on the importance重要性 of storytelling評書.
216
801000
4000
13:43
And I think this is really the theme主題 of this session會議.
217
805000
3000
13:46
Try to imagine想像 a world世界 where the only goal目標 is food餐飲 and a shelter庇護, but no stories故事.
218
808000
12000
13:58
No stories故事 around the campfire營火.
219
820000
2000
14:00
No legends傳說, no fairytales童話故事.
220
822000
2000
14:02
Nothing.
221
824000
2000
14:04
No novels小說.
222
826000
2000
14:09
Difficult, eh? It's meaningless
14:11
So this is what I really think.
224
833000
3000
14:14
I think that the key to a healthy健康 society社會
225
836000
4000
14:18
is a thriving community社區 of storytellers講故事的人,
226
840000
2000
14:20
and I think that the Nigerian尼日利亞 filmmakers電影製片人 really have proved證實 this.
227
842000
5000
14:25
I would like you to hear their voices
228
847000
5000
14:30
Just a few少數 moments瞬間.
229
852000
3000
14:33
It’s not an added添加 sequence序列, just some voices聲音 from Nollywood諾萊塢.
230
855000
5000
14:38
(Video視頻) ToyinToyin AlousaAlousa: Nollywood諾萊塢 is the best最好 thing that can happen發生 to them.
231
860000
2000
14:40
If you have an industry行業 that puts看跌期權 a smile微笑 on people's人們 face面對,
232
862000
4000
14:44
that’s Nollywood諾萊塢.
233
866000
2000
14:46
SO: I believe very soon不久, we’re回覆 not only going to have better movies電影,
234
868000
3000
14:49
we'll have that original原版的 Nigerian尼日利亞 movie電影.
235
871000
3000
14:52
BE: It’s still the same相同 basic基本 themes主題.
236
874000
2000
14:54
Love, action行動.
237
876000
3000
14:58
But we're telling告訴 it our own擁有 way, our own擁有 Nigerian尼日利亞 way, African非洲人 way.
238
880000
5000
15:04
We have diverse多種 cultures文化, diverse多種 cultures文化, there are so many許多,
239
886000
5000
15:09
that in the natal產後 lifetimes壽命,
240
891000
3000
15:12
I don't see us exhausting辛苦 the stories故事 we have.
241
894000
4000
15:16
FSFS: My job工作 ends結束 here, and the Nollywood諾萊塢 filmmakers電影製片人 really have now to work.
242
898000
7000
15:23
And I really hope希望 that there will be many許多, many許多 collaborations合作,
243
905000
3000
15:28
where we teach each other things.
244
910000
2000
15:30
And I really hope希望 that this will happen發生.
245
912000
3000
15:33
Thank you very much.
246
915000
1000
15:34
(Applause
247

15:38
Stop. I've got two questions問題.
248
920000
4000
15:42
Franco佛朗哥, you described描述 this as the world's世界 third第三 largest最大 film電影 industry行業.
249
924000
5000
15:47
What does that translate翻譯 to in terms條款 of numbers數字 of films影片, really?
250
929000
3000
15:50
FSFS: Oh, yes. I think I mentioned提到 briefly簡要地 -- it's close to 2,000 films影片.
251
932000
4000
15:54
There is scientific科學 data數據 on this.
252
936000
2000
15:56
CACA: 2,000 films影片 a year?
253
938000
2000
15:58
FSFS: 2,000 films影片 a year. 2005 or 6,
254
940000
3000
16:01
the censor審查 board has censored審查 1,600 films影片 alone單獨.
255
943000
6000
16:07
And we know that there are more.
256
949000
2000
16:09
So it’s safe安全 to say that there are 2,000 films影片.
257
951000
2000
16:11
So imagine想像 45 films影片 per week.
258
953000
2000
16:13
There are challenges挑戰. There are challenges挑戰.
259
955000
2000
16:15
There is a glut充斥 of film電影,
260
957000
2000
16:17
the quality質量 has to be raised上調, they need to go to the next下一個 level水平,
261
959000
3000
16:20
but I’m optimistic樂觀.
262
962000
2000
16:22
CACA: And these arenAREN’t films影片 that are primarily主要 seen看到 in cinemas電影院?
263
964000
3000
16:25
FSFS: Oh yes, of course課程. This is very important重要.
264
967000
3000
16:28
Maybe, you know, for you to try to imagine想像 this,
265
970000
2000
16:30
these are films影片 that are distributed分散式 directly in markets市場.
266
972000
6000
16:36
They are bought in video視頻 shops商店.
267
978000
2000
16:38
They can be rented for pennies便士.
268
980000
2000
16:40
CACA: On what format格式?
269
982000
