ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Willie Smits - Conservationist
Willie Smits has devoted his life to saving the forest habitat of orangutans, the "thinkers of the jungle." As towns, farms and wars encroach on native forests, Smits works to save what is left.

Why you should listen

Willie Smits works at the complicated intersection of humankind, the animal world and our green planet. In his early work as a forester in Indonesia, he came to a deep understanding of that triple relationship, as he watched the growing population of Sulawesi move into (or burn for fuel) forests that are home to the orangutan. These intelligent animals were being killed for food, traded as pets or simply failing to thrive as their forest home degraded.

Smits believes that to rebuild orangutan populations, we must first rebuild their forest habitat -- which means helping local people find options other than the short-term fix of harvesting forests to survive. His Masarang Foundation raises money and awareness to restore habitat forests around the world -- and to empower local people. In 2007, Masarang opened a palm-sugar factory that uses thermal energy to turn sugar palms (fast-growing trees that thrive in degraded soils) into sugar and even ethanol, returning cash and power to the community and, with luck, starting the cycle toward a better future for people, trees and orangs.

02:10
I'm not going to talk too long about it,
39
112000

02:12
but there are so many許多 of the family家庭 of UceUCE,
40
114000

02:14
which哪一個 are not so fortunate幸運 to live生活 out there in the forest森林,
41
116000
4000
02:18
that still have to go through通過 that process處理.
42
120000
2000
02:20
And I don't know anymore where to put them.
43
122000

02:22
So I decided決定 that I had to come up with a solution for her
44
124000
4000
02:26
but also a solution
45
128000
2000
02:28
that will benefit效益 the people that are trying to exploit利用 those forests森林,
46
130000
4000
02:32
to get their hands on the last timber木材
47
134000
3000
02:35
and that are causing造成, in that way,
48
137000
3000
那將會
02:38
the loss失利 of habitat棲息地 and all those victims受害者.
49
140000
3000
02:41
So I created創建 the place地點 SambojaSamboja LestariLESTARI,
50
143000
2000
02:43
and the idea理念 was,
51
145000
2000
02:45
if I can do this on the worst最差 possible可能 place地點 that I can think of
52
147000
3000
02:48
where there is really nothing left,
53
150000
2000
02:50
no one will have an excuse藉口 to say, "Yeah, but ..."
54
152000
4000
02:54
No. Everyone大家 should be able能夠 to follow跟隨 this.
55
156000
4000
02:58
So we're in East Borneo婆羅洲. This is the place地點 where I started開始.
56
160000
5000
03:03
As you can see there's only yellow黃色 terrain地形.
57
165000
2000
03:05
There's nothing left -- just a bit of grass there.
58
167000
3000
03:08
In 2002 we had about 50 percent百分 of the people jobless失業 there.
59
170000
4000
03:12
There was a huge巨大 amount of crime犯罪.
60
174000
2000
03:14
People spent花費 so much of their money on health健康 issues問題 and drinking water.
61
176000
5000
03:19
There was no agricultural農業的 productivity生產率 left.
62
181000
3000
03:22
This was the poorest最窮 district in the whole整個 province
63
184000
3000
03:25
and it was a total extinction滅絕 of wildlife野生動物.
64
187000
3000
03:28
This was like a biological生物 desert沙漠.
65
190000
2000
03:30
When I stood站在 there in the grass, it's hot -- not even the sound聲音 of insects昆蟲 --
66
192000
4000
03:34
just this waving揮手 grass.
67
196000
2000
03:36
Still, four years年份 later後來 we have created創建 jobs工作 for about 3,000 people.
68
198000
5000
03:41
The climate氣候 has changed. I will show顯示 you:
69
203000
3000
03:44
no more flooding洪水, no more fires火災.
70
206000
2000
03:46
It's no longer the poorest最窮 district,
71
208000
3000
03:49
and there is a huge巨大 development發展 of biodiversity生物多樣性.
72
211000
2000
03:51
We've我們已經 got over 1,000 species種類. We have 137 bird species種類 as of today今天.
73
213000
6000
03:57
We have 30 species種類 of reptiles爬行動物.
74
219000
2000
03:59
So what happened發生 here? We created創建 a huge巨大 economic經濟 failure失敗 in this forest森林.
75
221000
6000
04:05
So basically基本上 the whole整個 process處理 of destruction毀壞
76
227000
3000
04:08
had gone走了 a bit slower比較慢 than what is happening事件 now with the oil palm棕櫚.
77
230000
3000
04:11
But we saw the same相同 thing.
78
233000
2000
04:13
We had slash削減 and burn燒傷 agriculture農業;
79
235000
2000
我們使用火耕;
04:15
people cannot不能 afford給予 the fertilizer肥料,
80
237000
2000
04:17
so they burn燒傷 the trees樹木 and have the minerals礦物質 available可得到 there;
81
239000
3000
04:20
the fires火災 become成為 more frequent頻繁,
82
242000
2000
04:22
and after a while you're stuck卡住 with an area of land土地
83
244000
3000
04:25
where there is no fertility生育能力 left.
84
247000
2000
04:27
There are no trees樹木 left.
85
249000
2000
04:29
Still, in this place地點, in this grassland草原
86
251000
3000
04:32
where you can see our very first office辦公室 there on that hill爬坡道,
87
254000
3000
04:35
four years年份 later後來, there is this one green綠色 blopblop on the Earth's地球 surface表面 ...
88
257000
5000
04:40
(Applause
89
262000
2000
04:42
And there are all these animals動物, and all these people happy快樂,
90
264000
3000
04:45
and there's this economic經濟 value.
91
267000
2000
04:47
So how's如何的 this possible可能?
92
269000
2000
04:49
It was quite相當 simple簡單. If you'll你會 look at the steps腳步:
93
271000
2000
04:51
we bought the land土地, we dealt處理 with the fire,
94
273000
2000
04:53
and then only, we started開始 doing the reforestation造林
95
275000
3000
04:56
by combining結合 agriculture農業 with forestry林業.
96
278000
3000
04:59
Only then we set up the infrastructure基礎設施 and management管理 and the monetary貨幣.
97
281000
4000
05:03
But we made製作 sure that in every一切 step of the way
98
285000
3000
05:06
the local本地 people were going to be fully充分 involved參與
99
288000
3000
05:09
so that no outside forces軍隊 would be able能夠 to interfere干擾 with that.
100
291000
4000
05:13
The people would become成為 the defenders捍衛者 of that forest森林.
101
295000
4000
05:17
So we do the "people, profit利潤, planet行星" principles原則,
102
299000
2000
05:19
but we do it in addition加成
103
301000
2000
05:21
to a sure legal法律 status狀態 --
104
303000
2000
05:23
because if the forest森林 belongs屬於 to the state,
105
305000
2000
05:25
people say, "It belongs屬於 to me, it belongs屬於 to everyone大家."
106
307000
3000
05:28
And then we apply應用 all these other principles原則
107
310000
3000
05:38
What we did was we formulated制定 recipes食譜 --
110
320000
3000
05:41
how to go from a starting開始 situation情況 where you have nothing
111
323000
3000
05:44
to a target目標 situation情況.
112
326000
2000
05:46
You formulate制定 a recipe食譜 based基於 upon the factors因素 you can control控制,
113
328000
5000
05:51
whether是否 it be the skills技能 or the fertilizer肥料 or the plant choice選擇.
114
333000
4000
05:55
And then you look at the outputs輸出 and you start開始 measuring測量 what comes out.
115
337000
5000
06:00
Now in this recipe食譜 you also have the cost成本.
116
342000
2000
06:02
You also know how much labor勞動 is needed需要.
117
344000
3000
06:05
If you can drop下降 this recipe食譜 on the map地圖
118
347000
3000
06:08
on a sandy soil, on a clay粘土 soil,
119
350000
2000
06:10
on a steep slope, on flat平面 soil,
120
352000
2000
06:12
you put those different不同 recipes食譜; if you combine結合 them,
121
354000
3000
06:15
out of that comes a business商業 plan計劃,
122
357000
2000
06:17
comes a work plan計劃, and you can optimize優化 it
123
359000
3000
06:20
for the amount of labor勞動 you have available可得到 or for the amount of fertilizer肥料 you have,
124
362000
4000
06:24
and you can do it.
125
366000
2000
06:26
This is how it looks容貌 like in practice實踐. We have this grass we want to get rid擺脫 of.
126
368000
4000
06:30
It exudes散發著 [unclear不明]-like-喜歡 compounds化合物 from the roots.
127
372000
3000
06:33
The acacia刺槐 trees樹木 are of a very low value
128
375000
3000
06:36
but we need them to restore恢復 the micro-climate微氣候, to protect保護 the soil
129
378000
3000
06:39
and to shake out the grasses.
130
381000
3000
06:42
And after eight years年份 they might威力 actually其實 yield產量 some timber木材 --
131
384000

06:45
that is, if you can preserve保留 it in the right way,

06:53
but bamboo is very fire-susceptible火敏感.
135
395000
2000
06:55
So if we would plant that in the beginning開始
136
397000
2000
06:57
we would have a very high risk風險 of losing失去 everything again.
137
399000
4000
07:01
So we plant it later後來, along沿 the waterways水路
138
403000
2000
07:03
to filter過濾 the water, provide提供 the raw生的 products製品
139
405000
2000
07:05
just in time for when the timber木材 becomes available可得到.
140
407000
3000
07:08
So the idea理念 is: how to integrate整合 these flows流動
141
410000
3000
07:11
in space空間, over time and with the limited有限 means手段 you have.
142
413000
5000
07:16
So we plant the trees樹木, we plant these pineapples菠蘿
143
418000
2000
07:18
and beans and ginger生薑 in between之間, to reduce減少 the competition競爭 for the trees樹木,
144
420000
4000
07:22
the crop作物 fertilizer肥料. Organic有機 material材料 is useful有用 for the agricultural農業的 crops作物,
145
424000
5000
07:27
for the people, but also helps幫助 the trees樹木. The farmers農民 have free自由 land土地,
146
429000
3000
07:30
the system系統 yields產量 early income收入, the orangutans猩猩 get healthy健康 food餐飲
147
432000
4000
07:34
and we can speed速度 up ecosystem生態系統 regeneration再生
148
436000
3000
07:37
while even saving保存 some money.
149
439000
2000
07:39
So beautiful美麗. What a theory理論.
150
441000
2000
07:41
But is it really that easy
151
443000
3000
07:44
Not really, because if you looked看著 at what happened發生 in 1998,
152
446000
3000
07:47
the fire started開始.
153
449000
2000
07:49
This is an area of about 50 million百萬 hectares公頃.
154
451000
2000
07:51
January一月.
155

07:53
February二月.
156
455000

157
457000
1000

07:57
April四月.
158
459000
1000
四月。
07:58
May可能.
159
460000
1000
五月。
07:59
We lost丟失 5.5 million百萬 hectares公頃 in just a matter of a few少數 months個月.
160
461000
4000
08:03
This is because we have 10,000 of those underground地下 fires火災
161
465000
3000
08:06
that you also have in Pennsylvania賓夕法尼亞 here in the United聯合的 States狀態.
162
468000
4000
08:10
And once一旦 the soil gets得到 dried, you're in a dry season季節 -- you get cracks裂縫,
163
472000
3000
08:13
oxygen goes in, flames火焰 come out and the problem問題 starts啟動 all over again.
164
475000
4000
08:17
So how to break打破 that cycle週期?
165
479000
2000
08:19
Fire is the biggest最大 problem問題.
166
481000
2000
08:21
This is what it looked看著 like for three months個月.
167
483000
3000
08:24
For three months個月, the automatic自動 lights燈火 outside did not go off
168
486000
3000
08:27
because it was that dark黑暗.
169
489000
2000
08:29
We lost丟失 all the crops作物. No children孩子 gained獲得 weight重量 for over a year;
170
491000
4000
08:33
they lost丟失 12 IQ智商 points. It was a disaster災害
171
495000
3000
08:36
for orangutans猩猩 and people.
172
498000
2000
08:38
So these fires火災 are really the first things to work on.
173
500000
3000
08:41
That was why I put it as a single point up there.
174
503000
2000
08:44
And you need the local本地 people for that because these grasslands草原,
175
506000
3000
08:47
once一旦 they start開始 burning燃燒 ... It goes through通過 it like a windstorm風暴
176
509000
4000
08:51
and you lose失去 again the last bit of ash and nutrients營養成分
177
513000
3000
08:54
to the first rainfall雨量 -- going to the sea
178
516000
2000
08:56
killing謀殺 off the coral珊瑚 reefs珊瑚礁 there.
179
518000
3000
08:59
So you have to do it with the local本地 people.
180
521000
2000
09:01
That is the short-term短期 solution but you also need a long-term長期 solution.
181
523000
3000
09:04
So what we did is, we created創建
182
526000
2000
09:06
a ring of sugar palms手掌 around the area.
183
528000
3000
09:09
These sugar palms手掌 turn out to be fire-resistant耐火 --
184
531000
3000
09:12
also flood-resistant洪水耐, by the way --
185
534000
2000
09:14
and they provide提供 a lot of income收入 for local本地 people.
186
536000
4000
09:18
This is what it looks容貌 like:
187
540000
2000
09:20
the people have to tap龍頭 them twice兩次 a day -- just a millimeter毫米 slice --
188
542000
3000
09:23
and the only thing you harvest收成 is sugar water,
189
545000
3000
09:26
carbon dioxide二氧化碳, rain fall秋季 and a little bit of sunshine陽光.
190
548000
4000
09:30
In principle原理, you make those trees樹木 into
191
552000
2000
09:35
And you can create創建 so much energy能源 from this --
193
557000
3000
09:38
they produce生產 three times more energy能源 per hectare公頃 per year,
194
560000
5000
09:43
because you can tap龍頭 them on a daily日常 basis基礎.
195
565000
2000
09:45
You don't need to harvest收成 [unclear不明]
196
567000
2000
09:47
or any other of the crops作物.
197
569000
2000
09:49
So this is the combination組合 where we have all this genetic遺傳 potential潛在 in the tropics熱帶,
198
571000
4000
09:53
which哪一個 is still unexploited未開發, and doing it in combination組合 with technology技術.
199
575000
4000
09:57
But also your legal法律 side needs需求 to be in very good order訂購.
200
579000
4000
10:01
So we bought that land土地,
201
583000
2000
10:03
and here is where we started開始 our project項目 --
202
585000
2000
10:05
in the middle中間 of nowhere無處.
203
587000
2000
10:07
And if you zoom放大 in a bit you can see that all of this area
204
589000
4000
10:11
is divided分為 into strips帶子 that go over different不同 types類型 of soil,
205
593000
3000
10:14
and we were actually其實 monitoring監控,
206
596000
3000
10:17
measuring測量 every一切 single tree in these 2,000 hectares公頃, 5,000 acres.
207
599000
6000
10:23
And this forest森林 is quite相當 different不同.
208
605000
3000
10:26
What I really did was I just followed其次 nature性質,
209
608000
2000
10:28
and nature性質 doesn't know monocultures單一種植,
210
610000
3000
10:31
but a natural自然 forest森林 is multilayered多層.
211
613000
3000
10:34
That means手段 that both in the ground地面 and above以上 the ground地面
212
616000
2000
10:36
it can make better use of the available可得到 light,
213
618000
3000
10:39
it can store商店 more carbon in the system系統, it can provide提供 more functions功能.
214
621000
5000
10:44
But, it's more complicated複雜. It's not that simple簡單, and you have to work with the people.
215
626000
4000
10:48
So, just like nature性質,
216
630000
3000
10:51
we also grow增長 fast快速 planting種植 trees樹木 and underneath that,
217
633000
3000
10:54
we grow增長 the slower比較慢 growing生長, primary-grain初級粒 forest森林 trees樹木 of a very high diversity多樣
218
636000
6000
11:00
that can optimally最佳 use that light. Then,
219
642000
2000
11:02
what is just as important重要: get the right fungi菌類 in there
220
644000
4000
11:06
that will grow增長 into those leaves樹葉, bring帶來 back the nutrients營養成分
221
648000
3000
11:09
to the roots of the trees樹木 that have just dropped下降 that leaf within 24 hours小時.
222
651000
4000
11:13
And they become成為 like nutrient養分 pumps.
223
655000
2000
11:15
You need the bacteria to fix固定 nitrogen,
224
657000
3000
11:18
and without those microorganisms微生物, you won't慣於 have any performance性能 at all.
225
660000
5000
11:23
And then we started開始 planting種植 -- only 1,000 trees樹木 a day.
226
665000
4000
11:27
We could have planted種植的 many許多, many許多 more, but we didn't want to
227
669000
3000
11:30
because we wanted to keep the number of jobs工作 stable穩定.
228
672000
3000
11:33
We didn't want to lose失去 the people
229
675000
3000
11:36
that are going to work in that plantation種植園.
230
678000
4000
11:40
And we do a lot of work here.
231
682000
2000
11:42
We use indicator指示符 plants植物 to look at what soil types類型,
232
684000
3000
11:45
or what vegetables蔬菜 will grow增長, or what trees樹木 will grow增長 here.
233
687000
3000
11:48
And we have monitored監控 every一切 single one of those trees樹木 from space空間.
234
690000
5000
11:53
This is what it looks容貌 like in reality現實;
235
695000
2000
11:55
you have this irregular不規則 ring around it,
236
697000
2000
11:57
with strips帶子 of 100 meters wide, with sugar palms手掌
237
699000
4000
12:01
that can provide提供 income收入 for 648 families家庭.
238
703000
3000
12:04
It's only a small part部分 of the area.
239
706000
3000
12:07
The nursery苗圃, in here, is quite相當 different不同.
240
709000
3000
12:10
If you look at the number of tree species種類 we have in Europe歐洲, for instance,
241
712000
3000
12:13
from the Urals烏拉爾 up to England英國, you know how many許多?
242
715000
3000
12:16
165.
243
718000
2000
165
12:18
In this nursery苗圃, we're going to grow增長 10 times more than the number of species種類.
244
720000
4000
12:22
Can you imagine想像?
245
724000
2000
12:24
You do need to know what you are working加工 with,
246
726000
2000
12:26
but it's that diversity多樣 which哪一個 makes品牌 it work.
247
728000
3000
12:29
That you can go from this zero situation情況,
248
731000
3000
12:32
by planting種植 the vegetables蔬菜 and the trees樹木, or directly, the trees樹木
249
734000
4000
12:36
in the lines in that grass there,
250
738000
2000
12:38
putting up the buffer緩衝 zone, producing生產 your compost堆肥,
251
740000
3000
12:41
and then making製造 sure that at every一切 stage階段 of that up growing生長 forest森林
252
743000
5000
12:46
there are crops作物 that can be used.
253
748000
2000
12:48
In the beginning開始, maybe pineapples菠蘿 and beans and corn玉米;
254
750000
2000
12:50
in the second第二 phase, there will be bananas香蕉 and papayas木瓜;
255
752000
3000
12:53
later後來 on, there will be chocolate巧克力 and chilies辣椒.
256
755000
3000
12:56
And then slowly慢慢地, the trees樹木 start開始 taking服用 over,
257
758000
2000
12:58
bringing使 in produce生產 from the fruits水果, from the timber木材, from the fuel汽油 wood.
258
760000
4000
13:02
And finally最後, the sugar palm棕櫚 forest森林 takes over
259
764000
3000
13:05
and provides提供 the people with permanent常駐 income收入.
260
767000
2000
13:07
On the top最佳 left, underneath those green綠色 stripes條紋,
261
769000
3000
13:10
you see some white白色 dots -- those are actually其實 individual個人 pineapple菠蘿 plants植物
262
772000
4000
13:14
that you can see from space空間.
263
776000
2000
13:16
And in that area we started開始 growing生長 some acacia刺槐 trees樹木
264
778000
5000
13:21
that you just saw before.
265
783000
2000
13:23
So this is after one year.
266
785000
2000
13:25
And this is after two years年份.
267
787000
2000
13:27
And that's green綠色. If you look from the tower --
268
789000
3000
13:30
this is when we start開始 attacking進攻 the grass.
269
792000
3000
13:33
We plant in the seedlings
270
795000
2000
13:35
mixed with the bananas香蕉, the papayas木瓜, all the crops作物 for the local本地 people,
271
797000
4000
13:39
but the trees樹木 are growing生長 up fast快速 in between之間 as well.
272
801000
3000
13:42
And three years年份 later後來, 137 species種類 of birds鳥類 are living活的 here.
273
804000
3000
13:45

13:51
So we lowered降低 air空氣 temperature溫度 three to five degrees Celsius攝氏.
275

13:55
Air空氣 humidity濕度 is up 10 percent百分.
276
817000
2000
13:57
Cloud cover -- I'm going to show顯示 it to you -- is up.

2000
13:59
Rainfall雨量 is up.
278
821000
2000
14:01
And all these species種類 and income收入.
279
823000
2000
14:03
This ecolodge生態旅館 that I built內置 here,
280
825000
2000
14:05
three years年份 before, was an empty, yellow黃色 field領域.
281
827000
3000
14:08
This transponder轉發 that we operate操作 with the European歐洲的 Space空間 Agency機構 --

4000
14:12
it gives us the benefit效益 that every一切 satellite衛星 that comes over to calibrate校準 itself本身
283
834000
4000
14:16
is taking服用 a picture圖片.
284
838000
2000
14:18
Those pictures圖片 we use to analyze分析 how much carbon, how the forest森林 is developing發展,
285
840000
4000
14:22
and we can monitor監控 every一切 tree using運用 satellite衛星 images圖片 through通過 our cooperation合作.
286
844000
6000
14:28
We can use these data數據 now
287
850000
2000
14:30
to provide提供 other regions地區 with recipes食譜 and the same相同 technology技術.
288
852000
4000
14:34
We actually其實 have it already已經 with Google谷歌 Earth地球.
289
856000
2000
14:36
If you would use a little bit of your technology技術 to put tracking追踪 devices設備 in trucks卡車,
290
858000
4000
14:40
and use Google谷歌 Earth地球 in combination組合 with that,
291
862000
3000
Google Earth
14:43
you could directly tell what palm棕櫚 oil has been sustainably可持續 produced生成,
292
865000
4000
14:47
which哪一個 company公司 is stealing偷竊行為 the timber木材,
293
869000
3000
14:50
and you could save保存 so much more carbon
294
872000
2000
14:52
than with any measure測量 of saving保存 energy能源 here.
295
874000
3000
14:55
So this is the SambojaSamboja LestariLESTARI area.
296
877000
3000
14:58
You measure測量 how the trees樹木 grow增長 back,
297
880000
2000
15:00
but you can also measure測量 the biodiversity生物多樣性 coming未來 back.
298
882000
4000
15:04
And biodiversity生物多樣性 is an indicator指示符 of how much water can be balanced均衡,
299
886000
4000
15:08
how many許多 medicines藥品 can be kept不停 here.
300
890000
3000
15:11
And finally最後 I made製作 it into the rain machine
301
893000
3000
15:14
because this forest森林 is now creating創建 its own擁有 rain.
302
896000
3000
15:17
This nearby附近 city of Balikpapan巴厘巴板 has a big problem問題 with water;
303
899000
4000
15:21
it's 80 percent百分 surrounded包圍 by seawater海水,
304
903000
3000
15:24
and we have now a lot of intrusion侵擾 there.
305
906000
2000
15:26
Now we looked看著 at the clouds above以上 this forest森林;
306
908000
3000
15:29
we looked看著 at the reforestation造林 area, the semi-open半開放 area and the open打開 area.
307
911000
4000
15:33
And look at these images
308
915000
3000
15:36
I'll just run them very quickly很快 through通過.
309
918000
2000
15:38
In the tropics熱帶, raindrops雨滴 are not formed形成 from ice crystals晶體,
310
920000
3000
15:41
which哪一個 is the case案件 in the temperate適度的 zones,
311
923000
2000
15:43
you need the trees樹木 with [unclear不明], chemicals化學製品 that come out of the leaves樹葉 of the trees樹木
312
925000
5000
15:48
that initiate發起 the raindrops雨滴.
313
930000
2000
15:50
So you create創建 a cool place地點 where clouds can accumulate積累,
314
932000
4000
15:54
and you have the trees樹木 to initiate發起 the rain.
315
936000
2000
15:56
And look, there's now 11.2 percent百分 more clouds --
316
938000
4000
16:00
already已經, after three years年份.
317
942000
2000
16:02
If you look at rainfall雨量, it was already已經 up 20 percent百分 at that time.
318
944000
5000
16:07
Let's look at the next下一個 year,
319
949000
2000
16:09
and you can see that that trend趨勢 is continuing繼續.
320
951000
2000
16:11
Where at first we had a small cap of higher更高 rainfall雨量,
321
953000
3000
16:14
that cap is now widening加寬 and getting得到 higher更高.
322
956000
3000
16:17
And if we look at the rainfall雨量 pattern模式
323
959000
3000
16:20
above以上 SambojaSamboja LestariLESTARI, it used to be the driest乾旱 place地點,
324
962000
4000
16:24
but now you see consistently始終如一 see a peak of rain forming成型 there.
325
966000
4000
16:28
So you can actually其實 change更改 the climate氣候.
326
970000
4000
16:32
When there are trade貿易 winds of course課程 the effect影響 disappears消失,
327
974000
4000
16:36
but afterwards之後, as soon不久 as the wind stabilizes穩定,
328
978000
3000
16:39
you see again that the rainfall雨量 peaks come back above以上 this area.
329
981000
4000
16:43
So to say it is hopeless絕望 is not the right thing to do,
330
985000
5000
16:48
because we actually其實 can make that difference區別
331
990000
2000
16:50
if you integrate整合 the various各個 technologies技術.
332
992000
4000
16:54
And it's nice不錯 to have the science科學, but it still depends依靠 mostly大多 upon the people,
333
996000
4000
16:58
on your education教育.
334
1000000
2000
17:00
We have our farmer農民 schools學校.
335
1002000
2000
17:02
But the real真實 success成功 of course課程, is our band --
336
1004000
2000
17:04
because if a baby寶寶 is born天生, we will play, so everyone's大家的 our family家庭
337
1006000
4000
17:08
and you don't make trouble麻煩 with your family家庭.
338
1010000
2000
17:10
This is how it looks
339
1012000
2000
17:12
We have this road going around the area,
340
1014000
2000
17:14
which哪一個 brings帶來 the people electricity電力 and water from our own擁有 area.
341
1016000
4000
17:18
We have the zone with the sugar palms
342
1020000
2000
17:20
and then we have this fence籬笆 with very thorny多刺的 palms手掌
343
1022000
2000
17:22
to keep the orangutans猩猩 -- that we provide提供 with a place地點 to live生活 in the middle中間 --
344
1024000
5000
17:27
and the people apart距離.
345
1029000
2000
17:29
And inside, we have this area for reforestation造林
346
1031000
2000
17:31
as a gene基因 bank銀行 to keep all that material材料 alive,
347
1033000
3000
17:34
because for the last 12 years年份
348
1036000
2000
17:36
not a single seedling幼苗 of the tropical熱帶 hardwood硬木 trees樹木 has grown長大的 up
349
1038000
4000
17:40
because the climatic氣候 triggers觸發器 have disappeared消失.
350
1042000
3000
17:43
All the seeds種子 get eaten吃過.
351
1045000
2000
17:45
So now we do the monitoring監控 on the inside --
352
1047000
2000
17:47
from towers, satellites衛星, ultralights超輕.
353
1049000
3000
17:50
Each of the families家庭 that have sold出售 their land土地 now get a piece of land土地 back.
354
1052000
4000
17:54
And it has two nice不錯 fences圍欄 of tropical熱帶 hardwood硬木 trees樹木 --
355
1056000
4000
17:58
you have the shade陰涼處 trees樹木 planted種植的 in year one,
356
1060000
2000
18:00
then you underplantedunderplanted with the sugar palms手掌,
357
1062000
2000
18:03
and you plant this thorny多刺的 fence籬笆.
358
1065000
2000
18:05
And after a few少數 years年份, you can remove去掉 some of those shade陰涼處 trees樹木.
359
1067000
4000
18:09
The people get that acacia刺槐 timber木材 which哪一個 we have preserved罐頭 with the bamboo peel,
360
1071000
4000
18:13
and they can build建立 a house, they have some fuel汽油 wood to cook廚師 with.
361
1075000
3000
18:16
And they can start開始 producing生產 from the trees樹木 as many許多 as they like.
362
1078000
4000
18:20
They have enough足夠 income收入 for three families家庭.
363
1082000
4000
18:24
But whatever隨你 you do in that program程序, it has to be fully充分 supported支持的 by the people,
364
1086000
4000
18:28
meaning含義 that you also have to adjust調整 it to the local本地, cultural文化 values.
365
1090000
4000
18:32
There is no simple簡單 one recipe食譜 for one place地點.
366
1094000
4000
18:36
You also have to make sure that it is very difficult to corrupt
367
1098000
4000
18:40
that it's transparent透明.
368
1102000
2000
18:42
Like here, in SambojaSamboja LestariLESTARI,
369
1104000
2000
18:44
we divide劃分 that ring in groups of 20 families家庭.
370
1106000
3000
18:47
If one member會員 trespasses the agreement協議,
371
1109000
2000
18:49
and does cut down trees樹木,
372
1111000
2000
18:51
the other 19 members會員 have to decide決定 what's going to happen發生 to him.
373
1113000
3000
18:54
If the group doesn't take action行動,
374
1116000
2000
18:56
the other 33 groups have to decide決定 what is going to happen發生 to the group
375
1118000
4000
19:00
that doesn't comply執行 with those great deals交易 that we are offering them.
376
1122000
4000
19:04
In North Sulawesi蘇拉威西 it is the cooperative合作社 --
377
1126000
3000
19:07
they have a democratic民主的 culture文化 there,
378
1129000
2000
19:09
so there you can use the local本地 justice正義 system系統 to protect保護 your system系統.
379
1131000
5000
19:14
In summary概要, if you look at it, in year one the people can sell their land土地
380
1136000
3000
19:17
to get income收入, but they get jobs工作 back in the construction施工 and the reforestation造林,
381
1139000
5000
19:22
the working加工 with the orangutans猩猩, and they can use the waste浪費 wood to make handicraft手工業.
382
1144000
4000
19:26
They also get free自由 land土地 in between之間 the trees樹木,
383
1148000
3000
19:29
where they can grow增長 their crops作物.
384
1151000
2000
19:31
They can now sell part部分 of those fruits水果 to the orangutan猩猩 project項目.
385
1153000
4000
19:35
They get building建造 material材料 for houses房屋,
386
1157000
2000
19:37
a contract合同 for selling銷售 the sugar,
387
1159000
2000
19:39
so we can produce生產 huge巨大 amounts of ethanol乙醇 and energy能源 locally本地.
388
1161000
4000
19:43
They get all these other benefits好處: environmentally環保, money,
389
1165000
3000
19:46
they get education教育 -- it's a great deal合同.
390
1168000
2000
19:48
And everything is based基於 upon that one thing --
391
1170000
3000
19:51
make sure that forest森林 remains遺跡 there.
392
1173000
3000
19:54
So if we want to help the orangutans
393
1176000
3000
19:57
what I actually其實 set out to do --
394
1179000
3000
20:00
we must必須 make sure that the local本地 people are the ones那些 that benefit效益.
395
1182000
4000
20:04
Now I think the real真實 key to doing it, to give a simple簡單 answer回答,
396
1186000
4000
