strewn about our morning papers,
razbacane širom naših jutarnjih novina,
of our sisters, spouses, small children.
našim sestrama, suprugama, dečicom.
when she asks, as she certainly should,
kad upita, a sigurno bi trebala,
we didn't own it outright.
slobode nismo njome ovladali kako valja.
za sve vidove upotrebe naših genitalija
for every way we used our privates
that enforced them.
za muškarce da ih sprovode.
o ovom ratnom dobu,
against the outlines of our fallen,
preko kontura onih što su pali,
i kretali se odvažnom razuzdanošću
and moved with courageous abandon
saginjali se i vrdali,
ducked and parried,
collected death threats,
sakupljali pretnje smrću,
i nađemo partnera za trčanje",
and found a running mate,"
shamed nothing but fear,
stideli se samo straha,
i podrazumevali, naravno,
to be docile or small.
da se bude poslušan i sitan.
that we were women,
izgovorile da su žene,
and some of us did not,
da li nas to čini stvarnim
whether that made us real
or heir to your triumph,
ili naslednica vašeg trijumfa,
teetering towards woman,
koja naginje ka ženama,
Were you fearful or fearsome?
strašljiva ili neustrašljiva?
in the year it was time?
u godini kad beše vreme?
which bones had to break?
koje kosti si polomila?
i da li si dobro, mama?
about the arc of your brow,
already carried so much, wants to know
podneli toliko, želi da zna
what light did you keep from extinction?
koje svetlo ste čuvali da ne ugasne?
or were you roused?
ili vas je razbudilo?
what did you do with your privilege?
šta ste uradili s privilegijama?
ili ste zurili u plamen?
or directly into the flame?
ili ste ga tretirali kao obavezu?
or treat it like a liability?
of "nasty" or "less than"?
"gadura" i "manje vredna"?
ili stisnute pesnice?
or a clenched fist?
drawn on my face like a dagger,
in spite of crooked odds.
uprkos nepoštenim šansama.
in the company of courage,
when you just had yourself.
and the sisters beside them,
