as a tourist,
for the very first time,
los bosques de Borneo,
of the forest that struck me the most.
fueron sus sonidos sobrecogedores.
un gran pájaro, un cálao rinoceronte.
a rhinoceros hornbill.
over a great distance.
desde una gran distancia.
era en una reserva de gibones
was in fact a gibbon reserve,
was coming out of the forest that time
más importante venía del bosque
had actually noticed it.
rehabilitating gibbons,
del tiempo a rehabilitar gibones,
to spend a lot of their time
that takes place on the side.
la zona de tala ilegal.
el sonido de la selva
the insects, and the rest,
de los insectos y el resto,
in recordings you heard,
todo este tiempo,
at great distance.
en la distancia.
who were posted around this sanctuary
para controlar este santuario
to guard against illegal logging,
proteger la zona de la tala ilegal
again as tourists, out into the forest,
por el bosque como turistas,
who was just sawing a tree down,
que acababa de cortar un árbol,
from the ranger station.
de la sede de los guardias.
to hear the chainsaws,
the forest is very, very loud.
es muy, muy ruidoso.
that in this modern time,
from a ranger station in a sanctuary,
la sede de las guardias, en un santuario,
en marcha una motosierra.
someone who has a chainsaw gets fired up.
but in fact, it was quite true.
pero es absolutamente cierto.
always to come up with a high-tech,
encontrar alguna solución
it has to be scalable,
debe ser factible.
while were there was that
nos hacía falta ya estaba allí.
that would allow us to stop this
que detuviera la tala
¿Quién estaba ya en el bosque?
already in the forest?
dedicated, three full-time guards,
3 guardias a tiempo completo
what was happening out in the forest.
qué pasaba en el bosque.
y es una gran sorpresa,
out in the forest.
allí, en medio de la nada.
way out in the middle of nowhere.
hasta la carretera más cercana,
from the nearest road,
but they had very good cell phone service,
pero si que había señal de red.
acceso a Facebook todo el tiempo
were on Facebook all the time,
that in fact it would be possible
ene la posibilidad real
las motosierras con un programa
of chainsaws programmatically,
para ponerlo en los árboles.
to go up in the trees.
to listen to the sounds of the forest,
grabar los sonidos del bosque,
network that's there,
a la gente de la zona,
to this issue for them.
solución para el problema.
to talk about saving the rainforest,
preservación de la selva tropical,
definitely all heard about forever.
oímos hablar todo el tiempo.
have heard about saving the rainforest
de salvar los bosques,
has never changed:
nunca ha cambiado:
es una emergencia,
it's super urgent,
a tantos campos de fútbol
have been destroyed yesterday.
about half of the rainforest remains,
con solo la mitad del bosque,
problems like climate change.
es un problema más urgente.
that I didn't realize at the time:
que yo no sabía entonces:
más gases de efecto invernadero
for more greenhouse gas
trains, cars, trucks and ships combined.
camiones y barcos del mundo juntos.
to climate change.
that takes place in the rainforest
que ocurre en el bosque
like the illegal logging that we saw.
lo que hemos visto nosotros.
enforce the rules that are there,
aplicar las reglas existentes,
into this 17 percent
in the short term.
fastest way to fight climate change.
de combatir el cambio climático,
que hemos creado para esto.
is heard in the forest,
de una motosierra en el bosque,
of the chainsaw,
GSM network that's already there
a través de la red GSM
and stop the logging.
la tala en tiempo real.
and finding a tree that's been cut.
a buscar árboles talados,
a tree from a satellite
intervención en tiempo real.
and fastest way to do it,
más barata y rápida de hacerlo,
they weren't able to do it,
no pudieron aplicarla,
tan barata y rápida.
were actually cell phones,
fueran teléfonos móviles,
by the hundreds of millions every year,
de millones de teléfonos,
which of course we should do,
aunque deberíamos.
to the sounds of the forest.
that you see here,
como esta que ven ahí,
engineering challenges
mayores retos de ingeniería
bajo la copa de un árbol
under a tree canopy,
under a tree canopy,
solar panel design that you see here,
único en su tipo,
byproducts of an industrial process.
de procesos industriales.
for allowing me to do that.
this is a device up in a tree.
un dispositivo en un árbol.
is that they are pretty well obscured
es que quizás queda bien camuflado
they are able to hear chainsaw noises
pueden captar los sonidos de sierra
about three square kilometers,
it would make the area unprotected.
dejaría el área desprotegida.
we took it back to Indonesia,
volvimos a Indonesia,
by illegal logging.
por la tala ilegal.
sonidos de tala ilegal con motosierras.
illegal chainsaw noises.
Everyone had just gotten back down.
de subir al árbol y bajar.
y todos se callaron,
and they all quiet down,
dado cuenta hasta entonces.
until that moment.
to actually stop these loggers.
a detener a los madereros.
arrived close to where the loggers are.
llegamos hasta los madereros.
where I'm actually regretting
the other side of this hill.
más allá de esta colina.
llegó a lo más alto,
been interrupted before --
los había interrumpido...
event for them,
they have not been back since.
que no han vuelto desde entonces.
the entire operation works,
on the spot was that
en tiempo real para detenerlos
in real time and stop people,
they won't come back.
porque le dijimos a mucha gente,
because we told a lot of people,
amazing stuff started to happen.
a escribirnos y a llamarnos.
started to send us emails, phone calls.
throughout Asia,
people throughout South America,
we thought might be exceptional,
que era una excepción,
pretty good cell phone service.
muy buena señal,
que muchas áreas tenían señal,
of the forests that are most under threat.
de los bosques más amenazados.
really amazing happened,
their own old cell phones.
sus viejos teléfonos.
people who are already there,
and use the existing connectivity,
la conexión existente.
that are being sent to us
viejos que nos envía
something else in their afterlife,
tengan un segundo uso,
can be completely recycled,
puede reciclarse por completo,
un dispositivo reaprovechable.
an entirely upcycled device.
because of any sort of high-tech solution.
una solución de alta tecnología.
what's already there,
that if it's not phones,
aún sin los teléfonos,
going to be enough there
soluciones similares,
in new contexts.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Topher White - Conservation technologistThrough his startup Rainforest Connection, Topher White transforms used cell phones into guardians of the rainforest.
Why you should listen
In 2012, Topher White founded Rainforest Connection, a startup which converts recycled cell-phones into solar-powered listening devices to monitor and protect remote areas of the rainforest. Now an established NGO, Rainforest Connection has helped stop illegal logging and poaching operations in Sumatra, and the system is being expanded to three more rainforest reserves in Indonesia, the Amazon and Africa.
With a background in physics and engineering, White worked as web chief of ITER and co-founded Enthuse, a sports engagement and mobile rewards platform. For Rainforest Connection, he’s fashioned a simple device made of discarded cell phones and solar panels that detects and sends alerts when it picks up the sound of chainsaws in protected rainforests, allowing for intervention in real time.
