ta xây dựng hôm nay
kì quan trong tương lai?
from what we're doing today,
những thứ hiện nay,
but seemingly illogical ways,
nhưng phi lí,
về quá trình xây dựng
have possibly built these things,
xây những thứ này,
by a primordial race of giants
bởi giống loài khổng lồ ban sơ
with these monsters
những con quái vật đó
for moving those massive stones.
di chuyển những tảng đá lớn.
Cyclops aren't even that strong.
khiến vật liệu làm việc cho mình.
about getting material to work for them.
về những sinh vật đá to lớn, lảo đảo
of large, stone-like, wobbly creatures
a mythical creature,
có thể là huyền thoại,
that surround them,
các thần thoại xung quanh,
có một mối liên kết chặt chẽ
there's this thick connective tissue
first encountered the island,
hỏi người dân đảo Rapa Nui rằng
moved those massive statues.
những bức tượng to lớn thế.
but actually it's true.
nhưng nó là sự thật.
were transported standing,
được di chuyển thẳng đứng,
for visitors today,
với du khách hiện nay,
chúng khi đó,
marching around the island.
was not the objects themselves,
không phải là bức tượng,
thổi sự sống vào đá.
of bringing a stone to life.
tôi luôn theo đuổi giấc mơ đó.
I've been chasing that dream.
to accommodate that mythical side?
theo hướng thần thoại?
là thách thức bản thân
is challenging myself
nhưng dễ thực hiện:
pretty straightforward task
big heavy objects,
những vật thể to lớn,
designed to walk across land
được thiết kế
và đứng thẳng;
that springs itself to life
sống dậy và nhảy múa.
bằng cách xem kiến trúc
that by thinking of architecture
mà là một cách thể hiện,
ways to build things today.
xây dựng thông minh cho ngày nay.
surrounding our future
về tương lai,
efficiency and speed.
hiệu suất và tốc độ.
từ Cyclop,
can be smart, spectacular
có thể thông minh, ngoạn mục
how those ancient wonders were built,
được xây nên,
cách tạo ra bí mật
how to create the mystery
to ask that very question.
where we design buildings
ta thiết kế các công trình
hay có thể là 60 năm,
how to create something

Why you should listen
Brandon Clifford is best known for bringing megalithic sculptures to life to perform tasks. He is the director and cofounder of Matter Design, where his work focuses on advancing architectural research through spectacle and mysticism. He creates new ideas by critically evaluating ancient ways of thinking and experimenting with their value today. This work ranges from an award-winning play structure for kids to a colossal system of construction elements that can be guided into place with ease by mere mortals. He is dedicated to reimagining the role of the architect, and his speculative work continues to provoke new directions for design in the digital era.
Clifford is also an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His most recent authored work, The Cannibal's Cookbook, demonstrates his dedication to bringing ancient knowledge into contemporary practice with theatrical captivation. He received his Master of Architecture from Princeton University and his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Georgia Tech. For his work as a designer and researcher, he has received recognition with prizes such as the American Academy in Rome Prize, the SOM Prize, the Design Biennial Boston Award and the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects & Designers.
