ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nicholas Negroponte - Tech visionary
The founder of the MIT Media Lab, Nicholas Negroponte pushed the edge of the information revolution as an inventor, thinker and angel investor. He's the driving force behind One Laptop per Child, building computers for children in the developing world.

Why you should listen

A pioneer in the field of computer-aided design, Negroponte founded (and was the first director of) MIT's Media Lab, which helped drive the multimedia revolution and now houses more than 500 researchers and staff across a broad range of disciplines. An original investor in Wired (and the magazine's "patron saint"), for five years he penned a column exploring the frontiers of technology -- ideas that he expanded into his 1995 best-selling book Being Digital. An angel investor extraordinaire, he's funded more than 40 startups, and served on the boards of companies such as Motorola and Ambient Devices.

But his latest effort, the One Laptop per Child project, may prove his most ambitious. The organization is designing, manufacturing and distributing low-cost, wireless Internet-enabled computers costing roughly $100 and aimed at children. Negroponte hopes to put millions of these devices in the hands of children in the developing world.

And I will now do for the rest休息 of my life
the One Laptop笔记本电脑 Per Child儿童,
13
34000
4256
01:03
which哪一个 I've sort分类 of been doing
for a year and a half, anyway无论如何.
14
38280
3016
01:06
So I'm going to tell you about this,
15
41320
1736
01:07
use my 18 minutes分钟
to tell you why we're doing it,
16
43080
4096
01:12
how we're doing it
and then what we're doing.
17

01:14
And at some point I'll even pass通过 around
18

01:17
what the $100 laptop笔记本电脑 might威力 be like.
19
52720
3920
Chris
01:23
I was asked by Chris
to talk about some of the big issues问题,
20
58800
2856
01:26
and so I figured想通 I'd start开始 with the three
that at least最小 drove开车 me to do this.
21
61680
5256
01:31
And the first is pretty漂亮 obvious明显.
22
66960
2816
01:34
It's amazing惊人 when you meet遇到
a head of state, and you say,
23
69800
2656
01:37
"What is your most precious珍贵
01:40
They will not say "children孩子" at first,
25
75240
2696
01:42
and then when you say, "children孩子,"
they will pretty漂亮 quickly很快 agree同意 with you.
26
77960
4255
01:47
And so that isn't very hard.
27
82239
2017
01:49
(Laughter
28
84280
2696
the solutions解决方案 are to the big problems问题,
29
87000
5056
01:56
they include包括 education教育,
sometimes有时 can be just education教育
30
92080
4736
02:01
and can never be without
some element元件 of education教育.
31
96840
3296
02:04
So that's certainly当然 part部分 of it.
32
100160
1816
02:06
And the third第三
is a little bit less obvious明显.
33
102000
2376
02:09
And that is that we all in this room房间
learned学到了 how to walk步行, how to talk,
34
104400
4736
02:13
not by being存在 taught how to talk,
or taught how to walk步行,
35
109160
4496
02:18
but by interacting互动 with the world世界,
36
113680
1696
02:20
by having certain某些 results结果 as a consequence后果
of being存在 able能够 to ask for something,
37
115400
4136
02:24
or being存在 able能够 to stand up and reach达到 it.
38
119560
2136
02:26
Whereas at about the age年龄 six,
we were told to stop learning学习 that way,
39
121720
4256
02:30
and that all learning学习 from then on
would happen发生 through通过 teaching教学,
40
126000
3336
02:34
whether是否 it's people standing常设 up,
like I'm doing now,
41
129360
2429
02:36
or a book, or something.
42
131813
1723
02:38
But it was really through通过 teaching教学.
43
133560
1936
02:40
And one of the things in general一般
that computers电脑 have provided提供 to learning学习
44
135520
5176
02:45
is that it now includes包括 a kind of learning学习
45
140720
3136
02:48
which哪一个 is a little bit more
like walking步行 and talking,
46
143880
3096
02:51
in the sense that a lot of it is driven驱动
by the learner学习者 himself他自己 or herself她自己.
47
147000
6616
02:58
So with those as the principles
48
153640
2736
Seymour Papert,
03:01
some of you may可能 know Seymour西摩 Papert帕尔特.
49

03:03
This is back in 1982,
when we were working加工 in Senegal塞内加尔.
50
158440
3536
03:06
Because some people think that
the $100 laptop笔记本电脑 just happened发生 a year ago,
51
162000
5245
03:12
or two years年份 ago,
or we were struck来袭 by lightning闪电 --
52
167269
3187
03:15
this actually其实 has gone走了 back a long time,
and in fact事实, back to the '60s.
53
170480

03:20
Here we're in the '80s.

03:21
Steve史蒂夫 Jobs工作 had given特定 us some laptops笔记本电脑.
We were in Senegal
03:26
It didn't scale规模
56
181400
1256
03:27
but it at least最小 was bringing使 computers电脑
to developing发展 countries国家
57
182680

03:32
and learning学习 pretty漂亮 quickly很快
that these kids孩子,
58

03:35
even though虽然 English英语 wasn't their language语言,

A little bit more recently最近,

201360

03:50
And these are two anecdotes
64
205600

03:52
one was in Cambodia柬埔寨,

in a village that has no electricity电力,
no water, no television电视, no telephone电话,

03:59

And these kids

The parents父母 love it,
because when they open打开 up the laptops笔记本电脑,

2190
04:21
And talk about
where metaphors隐喻 and reality现实 mix混合 --
76
237000
3376
04:25
this is the actual实际 school学校.
77
240400
2600
04:28
In parallel平行 with this,
Seymour西摩 Papert帕尔特 got the governor州长 of Maine缅因州
78
243560
5096
04:33
to legislate立法 one laptop笔记本电脑 per child儿童
in the year 2002.
79
248680
5496
04:39
Now at the time, I think it's fair公平 to say
that 80 percent百分 of the teachers教师 were --
80
254200
5096
04:44
let me say, apprehensive忧虑.
81
259320
1576
04:45
Really, they were actually其实 against反对 it.
82
260920
1816
04:47
And they really preferred首选
that the money would be used
83
262760

04:50
for higher更高 salaries工资,
more schools学校, whatever随你.

04:52
And now, three and a half
years年份 later后来, guess猜测 what?
85
267720
4256
04:56
They're reporting报告 five things:
drop下降 of truancy逃学 to almost几乎 zero,
86
272000
6216
05:04
which哪一个 nobody没有人 did
and now almost几乎 everybody每个人 does --
88
280189
2507
05:07
drop下降 in discipline学科 problems问题,
increase增加 in student学生 participation参与.

05:11
Teachers教师 are now saying
it's kind of fun开玩笑 to teach.

老师们现在说教学很有乐趣;
05:13
Kids童装 are engaged订婚 -- they have laptops笔记本电脑! --
91
289080
3136
05:17
and then the fifth第五,
which哪一个 interests利益 me the most,
92
292240
2456
05:19
is that the servers服务器 have to be turned转身 off
at certain某些 times at night
93
294720
3216
05:22
because the teachers教师
are getting得到 too much email电子邮件
94
297960
2416
05:25
from the kids孩子 asking them for help.
95
300400
1976
05:27
So when you see that kind of thing --
96
302400
1776
05:29
this is not something
that you have to test测试.
97
304200
2048
05:31
The days of pilot飞行员 projects项目 are over,
when people say,
98
306272
2704
05:33
"We'd星期三 like to do three or four thousand
in our country国家 to see how it works作品."
99
309000
4056
05:37
Screw you. Go to the back of the line线
and someone有人 else其他 will do it,
100

05:41
and then when you figure数字 out
that this works作品, you can join加入 as well.
101
316200
4536
05:45
And this is what we're doing.
102
320760
2576
05:50
So, One Laptop笔记本电脑 Per Child儿童
was formed形成 about a year and a half ago.
104
325520
4976
05:55
It's a nonprofit非营利性 association协会.
105
330520
1896
05:57
It raised上调 about 20 million百万 dollars美元
106
332440
1936
05:59
to do the engineering工程
to just get this built内置,
107
334400
3816
06:03
and then have it produced生成 afterwards之后.
108
338240
2656
06:05
Scale规模 is truly important重要.
109
340920
2256
06:08
And it's not important重要 because you can
buy购买 components组件 at a lower降低 price价钱, OK?
110
343200
6296
06:14
It's because you can go
to a manufacturer生产厂家 --
111
349520
2876
06:17
and I will leave离开 the name名称 out --
112
352420
1642
06:18
but we wanted a small display显示,
113
354086
3530
06:22
doesn't have to have
06:26
It can even have a pixel像素 or two missing失踪.
115
361440
2362
06:28
It doesn't have to be that bright.
116
363826
2550
06:31
And this particular特定 manufacturer生产厂家 said,
117
366400
2296
06:33
"We're not interested有兴趣 in that.
We're interested有兴趣 in the living活的 room房间.
118
368720
3143
06:36
We're interested
06:38
We're interested有兴趣 in big displays显示器,
bright displays显示器.
120
374080
2336
06:41
You're not part部分 of our strategic战略 plan计划."
121
376440
2776
06:44
And I said, "That's kind of too bad,
because we need 100 million百万 units单位 a year."
122
379240
3715
06:47
(Laughter
123
382979
1571
06:49
And they said, "Oh, well, maybe we could
become成为 part部分 of your strategic战略 plan计划."
124
384574
3962
06:53
And that's why scale规模 counts计数.
125
388560
2416
06:55
And that's why we will not launch发射 this
126
391000
2256
06:58
without five to 10 million百万 units单位
in the first run.
127
393280
3896
07:02
And the idea理念 is
to launch发射 with enough足够 scale规模
128
397200
2976
07:05
that the scale规模 itself本身
helps帮助 bring带来 the price价钱 down,
129
400200
2576
07:07
and that's why I said
seven to 10 million百万 there.
130
402800
3896
07:11
And we're doing it

We will do it by going

133
412760

07:21
and getting得到 them to agree同意 and launch发射 it,
134

07:24
and then the others其他 can follow跟随.
135
419348

07:26
We have partners
136
421680

07:28
It's not hard to guess猜测
Google谷歌 would be one.
137
423560
2000
07:30
The others其他 are all playing播放 to pending有待.
138
425584
3632
07:34
And this has been
in the press a great deal合同.
139
429240
2856
07:36
It's the so-called所谓 Green绿色 Machine
that we introduced介绍 with Kofi科菲 Annan安南
140
432120
5896
07:42
in November十一月 at the World世界 Summit首脑
that was held保持 in Tunisia突尼斯.
141
438040
4296
07:47
Now once一旦 people start开始 looking at this,
they say, "Ah, this is a laptop笔记本电脑 project项目."
142
442360
5616
07:52
Well, no, it's not a laptop笔记本电脑 project项目.
It's an education教育 project项目.
143
448000
3296
07:56
And the fun开玩笑 part部分 --
and I'm quite相当 focused重点 on it --
144
451320
3656
07:59
I tell people I used to be a light bulb
but now I'm a laser激光 --
145
455000
4096
08:03
I'm just going to get that thing built内置,
and it turns out it's not so hard.
146
459120
6096
are the following以下:
147
465240
3216
08:13
I say 50 percent百分 here --
it's more like 60,
148
468480
2496
08:15
60 percent百分 of the cost成本 of your laptop笔记本电脑
149
471000
2056
08:17
is sales销售, marketing营销,
distribution分配 and profit利润.
150
473080
2856
08:20
Now we have none没有 of those, OK?
151
475960
2336
08:23
None没有 of those figure数字 into our cost成本,
152
478320
2936
08:26
because first of all, we sell it at cost成本,
and the governments政府 distribute分发 it.
153
481280
4216
08:30
to the school学校 system系统 like a textbook教科书.
154
485520
4256
08:34
So that piece disappears消失.
155
489800
2136
08:36
Then you have display显示 and everything else其他.
156
491960
2816
08:39
Now the display显示 on your laptop笔记本电脑 costs成本,
157
494800
2856
08:42
in rough numbers数字,
08:47
That can drop下降 to eight;
it can drop下降 to seven
159
502840
2136
08:49
but it's not going to drop下降 to two,
or to one and a half,
160
505000
2976
08:52
unless除非 we do some pretty漂亮 clever聪明 things.
161
508000
2760
08:56
It's the rest休息 -- that little brown棕色 box --
that is pretty漂亮 fascinating迷人,
162
512080
4176
09:01
because the rest休息 of your laptop笔记本电脑
is devoted忠诚 to itself本身.
163
516280
5416

09:12
(Laughter
166
527520
1456
09:13
And we have a situation情况 today今天
which哪一个 is incredible难以置信.
167
529000
5776
09:19
I've been using运用 laptops笔记本电脑
since以来 their inception成立.
168
534800
2976
09:22
And my laptop笔记本电脑 runs运行 slower比较慢,
less reliably可靠 and less pleasantly愉快
169
537800
5336
09:27
than it ever has before.
170
543160
2536
09:30
And this year is worse更差.
171
545720
1496
09:32
(Applause
172
547240
1376
09:33
People clap, sometimes有时
you even get standing常设 ovations欢呼,
173
548640
3296
09:36
and I say, "What the hell's地狱 wrong错误
with you? Why are we all sitting坐在 there?"
174
551960
3696
09:40
And somebody -- to remain nameless
called our laptop笔记本电脑 a "gadget小工具" recently最近.
175
555680
6336
09:46
And I said, "God, our laptop's笔记本电脑的 going to go
like a bat蝙蝠 out of hell地狱.
176
562040
3616
09:50
When you open打开 it up,
it's going to go 'bing“兵.'"
177
565680
2196
09:52
It'll它会 be on.
178
567900
1276
09:54
It'll它会 be just like it was in 1985,
179
569200
3776
09:57
when you bought an Apple苹果 Macintosh苹果 512.
180
573000
4696
10:02
It worked工作 really well.
181
577720
1736
10:04
And we've我们已经 been going steadily稳步 downhill下坡.
182
579480
3096
10:07
Now, people ask all the time what it is.
183
582600
3936
10:11
That's what it is.
184
586560
2056
10:13
The two pieces that are probably大概 notable显着:
it'll它会 be a mesh网孔 network网络,
185
588640
5296
10:18
so when the kids孩子 open打开 up their laptops笔记本电脑,
they all become成为 a network网络,
186
593960
3616
10:22
and then just need
one or two points of backhaul回程.
187
597600
2816
10:25
You can serve服务 a couple一对 of thousand kids孩子
with two megabits兆位.
188
600440
3176
10:28
So you really can bring带来 into a village,
189
603640
3056
10:31
and then the villages村庄
can connect themselves他们自己,
190
606720
2296
10:33
and you really can do it quite相当 well.
191
609040
3056
10:36
The dual mode模式 display显示 --
192
612120
1976
10:38
the idea理念 is to have a display显示
that both works作品 outdoors在户外 --
193
614120
4696
10:43
isn't it fun开玩笑 using运用 your cell细胞 phone电话
outdoors在户外 in the sunlight阳光?
194
618840
3416
10:47
Well, you can't see it.
195
622280
1536
10:48
And one of the reasons原因 you can't see it
196
623840
2176
10:50
is because it's backlighting逆光
most of the time, most cell细胞 phones手机.
197
626040
4056
10:54
Now, what we're doing is, we're doing one
that will be both frontlit前光 and backlit背光.
198
630120
4656
10:59
And whether是否 you manually手动 switch开关 it
or you do it in the software软件
199
634800
3776
11:03
is to be seen看到.
200
638600
1496
11:04
But when it's backlit背光, it's color颜色.
201
640120
1856
11:06
And when it's frontlit前光,
it's black黑色 and white白色
202
642000
2056
11:08
at three times the resolution解析度.
203
644080
1976
11:10
Is it all worked工作 out? No.
204
646080
2456
11:13
That's why a lot of our people are
more or less living活的 in Taiwan台湾 right now.
205
648560
5256
11:18
And in about 30 days,
we'll know for sure whether是否 this works作品.
206
653840
4216
11:22
Probably大概 the most important重要 piece there
207
658080
4216
11:27
is that the kids孩子
really can do the maintenance保养.
208
662320
3136
11:30
And this is again something
that people don't believe,
209
665480
3136
11:33
but I really think it's quite相当 true真正.
210
668640
1667
11:36
That's the machine we showed显示 in Tunis突尼斯.
211
671880
4896
11:41
This is more the direction方向
that we're going to go.
212
676800
2776
11:44
And it's something
that we didn't think was possible可能.
213
679600
3336
11:47
Now, I'm going to pass通过 this around.
214
682960
3336
11:51
This isn't a design设计, OK?
215
686320
2176
11:53
So this is just a mechanical机械
engineering工程 sort分类 of embodiment实施例 of it
216
688520
4696
11:58
for you to play with.
217
693240
1536
11:59
And it's clearly明确地 just a model模型.
218
694800
1856
12:01
The working加工 one is at MITMIT.
219
696680
2696
12:04
I'm going to pass通过 it
to this handsome英俊 gentleman绅士.
220
699400
2856
12:07
At least最小 you can decide决定
whether是否 it goes left or --
221
702280
2456
12:09
Before you do it,
for the people down in simulcast同播 --
222
704760
3300
I forgot忘记.
CACA: Just show显示 it off a bit.
223
708084
3062
12:15
So wherever哪里 the camera相机 is --
OK, good point. Thank you, Chris
224
711170
3006
12:19
The idea理念 was that
it would be not only a laptop笔记本电脑,
225
714200
3576
12:22
but that it could transform转变
into an electronic电子 book.
226
717800
3576
12:26
So it's sort分类 of an electronic电子 book.
227
721400
1667
12:27
This is where when you go outside,
it's in black黑色 and white白色.
228
723091
2762
12:30
The games游戏 buttons纽扣 are missing失踪,
229
725877
1779
12:32
but it'll它会 also be a games游戏 machine,
230
727680
2295
12:34
book machine.
231
729999
1337
12:36
Set it up this way,
and it's a television电视 set.
232
731360
2496
-- is that enough足够
for simulcast同播? OK, sorry.
233
733880
4120
12:44
I'll let Jim吉姆 decide决定
which哪一个 way to send发送 it afterwards之后.
234
740160
2856
12:47
OK. Seven countries国家.
235
743040
1696
12:49
(Laughter
236
744760
1576
12:51
I say "maybe" for Massachusetts
because they actually其实 have to do a bid出价.
237
746360
5056
12:56
By law you've got to bid出价,
and so on and so forth向前.
238
751440
2656
12:58
So I can't quite相当 name名称 them.
239
754120
1416
13:00
In the other cases,
they don't have to do bids投标.
240
755560
2656
13:03
They can decide
241
758240
1612
13:04
it's the federal联邦 government政府 in each case案件.
242
759876
2060
13:06
It's kind of agonizing
243
761960
1216
13:08
because a lot of people say,
"Let's do it at the state level水平,"
244
763200
2905
13:10
because states状态 are more nimble敏捷
than the feds联邦调查局, just because of size尺寸.
245
766129
4847
13:15
And yet然而 we count计数.
246
771000
1176
13:17
We're really dealing交易
with the federal联邦 government政府.
247
772200
2376
13:19
We're really dealing交易
with ministries部委 of education教育.
248
774600
2336
13:21
And if you look at governments政府
around the world世界,
249
776960
2696
13:24
ministries部委 of education教育
tend趋向 to be the most conservative保守,
250
779680
3736
13:28
and also the ones那些 that have huge巨大 payrolls就业.
251
783440
4176
13:32
Everybody每个人 thinks
they know about education教育,
252
787640
2376
13:34
a lot of culture文化 is built内置 into it as well.
253
790040
2456
13:37
It's really hard.
And so it's certainly当然 the hard road.
254
792520
3656
13:41
If you look at the countries国家,
they're pretty漂亮 geoculturallygeoculturally distributed分散式.
255
796200
4776
13:45
Have they all agreed同意? No, not completely全然.
256
801000
2496
他们都同意了吗?不,还没有完全同意;
257
803520
2376
13:50
are the three that are
the most active活性 and most agreed同意.
258
805920
3096
13:53
We're purposely故意
not signing签约 anything with anybody任何人
259
809040
3096
13:56
until直到 we actually其实 have the working加工 ones那些.
260
812160
2296
13:59
And since以来 I visit访问
each one of those countries国家
261
814480
2656
14:01
within at least最小 every一切 three months个月,
262

14:04
I'm just going around the world世界

14:15

266
830422

14:19
Well, guess猜测 what, we're not.
268
