ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Debra Jarvis - Chaplain + author
Debra Jarvis isn't your typical hospital chaplain. With wry wit, she aims to comfort patients -- and also challenge them.

Why you should listen

For writer, ordained minister and hospital chaplain Debra Jarvis, humor is a powerful balm. She is not afraid to be funny even when doing very serious work with the sick and dying as a hospice chaplain, a pastoral consultant for volunteer groups caring for people with AIDS and MS, and a staff chaplain at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Debra is the author of It’s Not About the Hair: And Other Certainties of Life & Cancer and numerous other books. Currently on sabbatical in Geneva, Debra’s last job was as writer-in-residence for the University Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle. In her free time, Debra accompanies her Cairn terrier Max in his therapy dog work.

02:37
I have found發現 that I need to get that out of the way,
47
145224
3213
02:40
because I'll see somebody go
48
148437
1774

02:49
So now you know.
52
157445
2171
02:51
I learned學到了 a lot being存在 a patient患者,
53
159616
2137
02:53
and one of the surprising奇怪 things was
54
161753
1522
02:55
that only a small part部分 of the cancer癌症 experience經驗
55
163275
4107
02:59
is about medicine醫學.
56
167382
2092
03:01
Most of it is about feelings情懷 and faith信仰
57
169474
4353
03:06
and losing失去 and finding發現 your identity身分
58
173827
2633
03:08
and discovering發現 strength強度
59
176460
1578
03:10
and flexibility靈活性 you never even knew知道 you had.
60
178038
3922
03:14
It's about realizing實現 that
61
181960
2329
03:16
the most important重要 things in life are
62
184289
3070
03:19
not things at all, but relationships關係,
63
187359
3081
03:22
and it's about laughing in the face面對 of uncertainty不確定
64
190440
4066
03:26
and learning學習 that the way to
get out of almost幾乎 anything
65
194506
3439
03:30
is to say, "I have cancer癌症."
66
197945
4315
03:34
So the other thing I learned學到了 was that
67
202260
2513
03:36
I don't have to take on "cancer癌症 survivor倖存者"
68
204773
3454
03:40
as my identity身分,
69
208227
1968
03:42
but, boy男孩, are there powerful強大 forces軍隊
70
210195
3619
03:46
pushing推動 me to do just that.
71
213814
3546
03:49
Now, don't, please, misunderstand誤解 me.
72
217360
4318

03:55
and the drive駕駛 for early screening篩查
74
223637
1980
03:57
and cancer癌症 awareness意識 and cancer癌症 research研究
75
225617
2654
04:02
and this is a wonderful精彩 thing.
77
230386
1324
04:03
We can now talk about cancer癌症
78
231710
2084
04:05
without whispering耳語.
79
233794
1778
04:07
We can talk about cancer癌症 and
we can support支持 one another另一個.
80
235572
4518
04:12
But sometimes有時, it feels感覺
81
240090
3086
04:15
like people go a little overboard落水
82
243176
1398
04:16
and they start開始 telling告訴 us how we're going to feel.
83
244574
5205
04:21
So about a week after my surgery手術,
84
249779
3543
04:25
we had a houseguest房客.
85
253322
2880
04:28
That was probably大概 our first mistake錯誤.
86
256202
2748
04:31
And keep in mind心神 that
87
258950
1521
04:32
at this point in my life
88
260471
1670
04:34
I had been a chaplain牧師 for over 20 years年份,
89
262141
3622
04:37
and issues問題 like dying垂死 and death死亡
90
265763
2323
04:40
and the meaning含義 of life,
91
268086
1556
04:41
these are all things I'd been
yakkingyakking about forever永遠.
92
269642
3178
04:45
So at dinner晚餐 that night,
93
272820
2500
04:47
our houseguest房客 proceeds收益 to
stretch伸展 his arms武器 up over his head,
94
275320
2736
04:50
and say, "You know, Deb德布,
95
278056
2805
04:53
now you're really going to learn學習 what's important重要.
96
280861
4149
04:57
Yes, you are going to make some big changes變化
97
285010
2697
04:59
in your life,
98

1370
05:01
and now you're going to start開始

05:04
Yep是的, this cancer癌症 is your wakeup醒來 call."
100
292725
4025
05:10
Now, these are golden金色 words
101

07:39
He lived生活 by himself他自己,
155
446974
2306
07:41
he would come in for chemotherapy化療 by himself他自己,

07:52
how come you never bring帶來 a friend朋友 with you?"
160
460748

And he said, "I don't really have any friends朋友."
161
463489
4719
08:00
But he had tons of friends朋友 on the infusion注入 floor地板.
162
468208

08:02
We all loved喜愛 him, and people were going
in and out of his room房間 all the time.
163
470469
4376
08:07
So at his last chemo化療,
164
474845
2959
08:10
we sang him the song歌曲
165
477804

08:11
and we put the crown王冠 on his

08:16
"So what are you going to do now?"
168
484339
4456
08:20
And he answered回答,
169
488795
1810
他說:
08:22
"Make friends朋友."
170
490605
1633
08:24
And he did.
171
492238
2112
and he made製作 friends朋友 there,
172
494350

他開始當志工,在那邊交了朋友;
08:30
and he began開始 going to a church教會

180
521198
4608
08:58
So what about you?

09:06
It could be a recent最近 one,
184

It's never too late晚了 to change更改 what it means手段,
187

09:19
because meaning含義 is dynamic動態.
188
546855

09:27
It's never too late晚了 to become成為 someone有人 other
192
555541
2610
09:30
than simply只是 a survivor倖存者.
193
558151
3521
09:33
Hear how static靜態的 that word sounds聲音?
194
561672
3324
09:37
Survivor
195
564996
1917
09:39
No movement運動, no growth發展.
196
566913
4391
09:43
Claim要求 your experience經驗.

09:45
Don't let it claim要求 you, because if you do,

09:48
I believe you will become成為 trapped被困,

3161
09:51
you will not grow增長, you will not evolve發展.
200
578973
5942
09:57
But of course課程, sometimes有時 it's not outside pressures壓力
201
584915
3478
10:00
that cause原因 us to take on that identity身分 of survivor倖存者.
202
588393
4371
10:04
Sometimes有時 we just like the perks津貼.
203
592764
3893
10:08
Sometimes有時 there's a payoff付清.
204
596657
3508
10:12
But then we get stuck
205
600165
3735
10:16
Now, one of the first things I learned學到了
206
603900
1811
10:17
as a chaplain牧師 intern實習生 was the three C'sC'S
207
605711
4106
10:22
of the chaplain's牧師的 job工作:
208
609817
2391
10:24
Comfort安慰, clarify澄清 and, when necessary必要, confront面對
209
612208
6962
10:31
or challenge挑戰.
210
619170
2155
10:33
Now, we all pretty漂亮 much love the comforting欣慰的
211
621325
1946
10:35
and the clarifying澄清.
212
623271
1857
10:37
The confronting面對, not so much.
213
625128
4942
10:42
One of the other things that I loved
214
630070
1994
10:44
about being存在 a chaplain牧師 was
215
632064
2458
10:46
seeing眼看 patients耐心 a year, or even several一些 years年份
216
634522
4473
10:51
after their treatment治療, because
217
638995
1841
10:53
it was just really cool to see
how they had changed
218
640836
2700
10:55
and how their lives生活 had evolved進化
219
643536
2216
10:57
and what had happened發生 to them.
220
645752
1890
10:59
So I was thrilled高興 one day
221
647642
2520
11:02
to get a page down into the lobby前廳 of the clinic診所
222
650162
2448
11:04
from a patient患者 who I had seen看到 the year before,
223
652610
3581
11:08
and she was there with her two adult成人 daughters女兒,
224
656191
2474
11:10
who I also knew知道, for her one year follow-up跟進 exam考試.
225
658665
4259
11:15
So I got down to the lobby前廳, and they were ecstatic欣喜若狂
226
662924
3537
11:18
because she had just gotten得到
all of her test測試 results結果 back
227
666461
2251
11:20
and she was NEDNED: No Evidence證據 of Disease疾病.
228
668712
6188
(No Evidence of Disease)。
11:27
Which哪一個 I used to think meant意味著 Not Entirely完全 Dead.
229
674900
4757
(Not Entirely Dead)。
11:31
So they were ecstatic欣喜若狂, we satSAT down to visit訪問,
230
679657
5493
11:37
and it was so weird奇怪的, because
231
685150
2807
11:40
within two minutes分鐘, she
started開始 retelling複述 me the story故事
232
687957
3882
11:44
of her diagnosis診斷 and her
surgery手術 and her chemo化療,
233
691839
4530
11:48
even though雖然, as her chaplain牧師,
I saw her every一切 week,
234
696369
3468
11:52
and so I knew知道 this story故事.
235
699837
2891
11:54
And she was using運用 words like suffering痛苦,
236
702728
3042
12:01
And she ended結束 her story故事 with,
238
709765
2614
12:09
And at that point, her two
daughters女兒 got up and said,
240
717173
2664
12:12
"We're going to go get coffee咖啡."
241
719837
3912
12:15
And they left.
242
723749
3141
12:19
Tell me three things about
yourself你自己 before the next下一個 stop.
243
726890
2835
12:21
People were leaving離開 the bus總線 before she even got
244
729725
2756
12:24
to number two or number three.
245
732481
5377
12:30
So I handed her a tissue組織,
246
737858
3487
12:33
and I gave her a hug擁抱,
247
741345
3297
12:36
and then, because I really cared照顧 for this woman女人,
248
744642
3510
12:40
I said,
249
748152
2086
12:42
"Get down off your cross交叉."
250
750238
2306
12:44
And she said, "What?"
251
752544
4266
12:49
And I repeated重複, "Get down off your cross交叉."
252
756810
5414
12:54
And to her credit信用, she could
talk about her reasons原因
253
762224
4645
12:59
for embracing擁抱 and then clinging執著 to this identity身分.
254
766869
5119
13:04
It got her a lot of attention注意.
255
771988
2022
13:06
People were taking服用 care關心 of her for a change更改.
256
774010
3105
13:09
But now, it was having the opposite對面 effect影響.
257
777115
3695
13:13
It was pushing推動 people away.
258
780810
2483
13:15
People kept不停 leaving離開 to get coffee咖啡.
259
783293
3747
13:19
She felt crucified釘在十字架上 by her experience經驗,
260
787040
3901
13:23
but she didn't want to let that crucified釘在十字架上 self die.
261
790941
6222
13:29
Now, perhaps也許 you are thinking思維
262
797163
2917
13:32
I was a little harsh苛刻 with her,
263
800080
2950
13:35
so I must必須 tell you that
264
803030
2108
13:37
I was speaking請講 out of my own擁有 experience經驗.
265
805138
3692
13:41
Many許多, many許多 years年份 before,
266
808830
2844
13:43
I had been fired解僱 from a job工作 that I loved喜愛,
267
811674
3326
13:47
and I would not stop talking about my innocence無辜
268
815000
3716
13:50
and the injustice不公正 and the betrayal辜負 and the deceiptdeceipt,
269
818716
3404
13:54
until直到 finally最後, just like this woman女人,
270
822120
1130
13:55
people were walking步行 away from me,
271
823250
2041
13:57
until直到 I finally最後 realized實現
272
825291
3236
14:00
I wasn't just processing處理 my feelings情懷,
273
828527
3872
14:04
I was feeding饋送 them.
274
832399
2708
14:07
I didn't want to let that crucified釘在十字架上 self die.
275
835107
4063
14:11
But we all know that with any resurrection復活 story故事,
276
839170
5422
14:16
you have to die first.
277
844592
2628
14:21
Jesus耶穌 was dead a whole整個 day in the tomb
279
849043
3272
14:24
before he was resurrected復活.
280
852315
2495
14:27
And I believe that for us,
281
854810
1838
14:28
being存在 in the tomb
282
856648
2132
14:30
means手段 doing our own擁有 deep inner work
283
858780
3986
14:34
around our wounds傷口
284
862766
2704
14:37
and allowing允許 ourselves我們自己 to be healed癒合.
285
865470
4473
14:42
We have to let that crucified釘在十字架上 self die
286
869943
3057
14:45
so that a new self, a truer更真實 self,
287
873000
3604
14:48
is born天生.
288
876604
2382
14:51
We have to let that old story故事 go
289
878986
2858
14:54
so that a new story故事, a truer更真實 story故事,
290
881844
4147
14:58
can be told.
291
885991
3039
15:01
Claim要求 your experience經驗. Don't let it claim要求 you.
292
889030
5543
15:06
What if there were no survivors
293
894573
2581
15:09
meaning含義, what if people decided決定
294
897154
2796
15:12
to just claim要求 their trauma外傷 as an experience經驗
295
899950
2870
15:15
instead代替 of taking服用 it on as an identity身分?
296
902820
4170
15:19
Maybe it would be the end結束 of being存在
297
906990
2002
15:21
trapped被困 in our wounds傷口
298
908992
2358
15:23
and the beginning開始 of amazing驚人
299
911350
3554
15:27
self-exploration自我探索 and discovery發現 and growth發展.
300
914904
3926
15:31
Maybe it would be the start開始 of defining確定 ourselves我們自己
301
918830
4795
15:35
by who we have become成為
302
923625
2580
15:38
and who we are becoming變得.
303
926205
4170
15:42
So perhaps也許 survivor倖存者 was not
304
930375
