00:22
I'm really here by accidentaccidente.
1
4000
3000
realmente estoy aqui por accidente
00:25
And what I mean -- not at TEDTED -- that I'm --
2
7000
3000
00:28
at this pointpunto in my life, trulyverdaderamente my setconjunto of circumstancescircunstancias
3
10000
4000
00:32
I would trulyverdaderamente considerconsiderar an accidentaccidente.
4
14000
3000
00:35
But what I'd like to talk to you about todayhoy
5
17000
1000
00:36
is perhapsquizás a way in whichcual we could use technologytecnología
6
18000
5000
00:41
to make those accidentsaccidentes happenocurrir oftena menudo.
7
23000
2000
00:43
Because I really think, when I look back at how I actuallyactualmente endedterminado up
8
25000
7000
00:50
in this accidentaccidente, technologytecnología playedjugó a biggrande rolepapel in that.
9
32000
4000
00:54
So, what I'd like to do todayhoy is tell you a little bitpoco about myselfmí mismo,
10
36000
4000
00:58
because I'd like to put in contextcontexto what I'm going to tell you.
11
40000
3000
01:01
And I think you will see why the two greatestmejor passionspasiones in my life todayhoy
12
43000
6000
01:07
are childrenniños and educationeducación.
13
49000
3000
son los niños y la educación.
01:10
And onceuna vez I put that in contextcontexto,
14
52000
3000
01:13
I'd like to tell you a little bitpoco about technologytecnología:
15
55000
2000
01:15
why I believe technologytecnología is a tremendoustremendo enablerhabilitador;
16
57000
2000
porque creo que la tecnología es una tremenda facilitadora;
01:17
a very powerfulpoderoso toolherramienta to help addressdirección some of these challengesdesafíos.
17
59000
6000
01:23
Then, about the initiativeiniciativa that ChrisChris mentionedmencionado,
18
65000
2000
01:25
that we decideddecidido to launchlanzamiento at AMDAMD that we call 50x15.
19
67000
5000
01:30
And then I'll come back to the beginningcomenzando,
20
72000
2000
Después volveré al principio
01:32
and tell you a little bitpoco more -- hopefullyOjalá convinceconvencer you --
21
74000
5000
01:37
that I believe that in today'shoy worldmundo,
22
79000
1000
de que creo que en el mundo de hoy,
01:38
it is really importantimportante for businessnegocio leaderslíderes
23
80000
3000
01:41
not only to have an ideaidea of what theirsu businessnegocio is all about,
24
83000
3000
no solamente entender su negocio,
01:44
but to have a passionpasión for something that is meaningfulsignificativo.
25
86000
4000
01:48
So, with that in mindmente, first of all let me tell you,
26
90000
3000
01:51
I'm one of fivecinco childrenniños. I'm the oldestmás antiguo, the other fourlas cuatro are womenmujer.
27
93000
5000
01:56
So I grewcreció up in a familyfamilia of womenmujer.
28
98000
2000
01:58
I learnedaprendido a lot about how to dealacuerdo with that partparte of the worldmundo.
29
100000
5000
02:03
(LaughterRisa)
30
105000
2000
(Risas)
02:05
And, as you can imagineimagina, if you can pictureimagen this:
31
107000
5000
02:10
I was bornnacido in a very smallpequeña villagepueblo in MexicoMéjico,
32
112000
2000
02:12
in, unfortunatelyDesafortunadamente, very poorpobre surroundingsalrededores,
33
114000
4000
desafortunadamente con alrededores muy pobres,
02:16
and my parentspadres did not have a collegeUniversidad educationeducación.
34
118000
2000
y mis padres no tenían educación universitaria.
02:18
But I was fortunateafortunado to be ablepoder to have one, and so were my fourlas cuatro sistershermanas.
35
120000
5000
02:23
That kindtipo of tellsdice you a little bitpoco of an ideaidea of the emphasisénfasis
36
125000
2000
Eso debe darles una idea del énfasis
02:25
that my parentspadres placedmetido on educationeducación.
37
127000
3000
02:28
My parentspadres were fanaticsfanáticos about learningaprendizaje,
38
130000
2000
Mis padres eran fanáticos del aprendizaje,
02:30
and I'll come back to that a little bitpoco laterluego.
39
132000
3000
les contaré sobre ello mas adelante.
02:33
But one of the things that exposedexpuesto me earlytemprano to learningaprendizaje,
40
135000
4000
02:37
and a tremendoustremendo curiositycuriosidad that was instilledinculcado in me as a childniño,
41
139000
5000
02:42
was throughmediante a technologytecnología whichcual is on the screenpantalla -- is a VictrolaVictrola.
42
144000
5000
02:47
My fatherpadre foundencontró that in a junkyarddepósito de chatarra,
43
149000
3000
02:50
and was ablepoder to repairreparar it and make it work. And somehowde algun modo --
44
152000
5000
de algún modo pudo repararla y hacerla funcionar. Y no se como,
02:55
to this day, I franklyfrancamente don't know how he was so awareconsciente
45
157000
2000
02:57
of what was going on in the worldmundo -- but,
46
159000
2000

03:07
how MozartMozart was the mostmás romanticromántico of all the classicclásico composerscompositores ever,
49

5000

03:18

03:23
that becameconvirtió so famousfamoso in the worldmundo.
53
185000
2000
03:25
And would tell me a little bitpoco about historyhistoria too,
54
187000
2000
También me contaba un poco de historia,
03:27
when he'del habria playjugar the 1812 OvertureObertura by TchaikovskyTchaikovsky
55
189000
4000
cuando tocaba la "Obertura 1812" de Tchaikovsky
03:31
on this little VictrolaVictrola, and he would tell me about RussiaRusia
56
193000
3000
03:34
and all the things that were happeningsucediendo in RussiaRusia at those timesveces
57
196000
3000
03:37
and why this musicmúsica,
58
199000
1000
y por qué su música
03:38
in some way, representedrepresentado a little bitpoco of that historyhistoria.
59
200000
4000
03:42
And even as a childniño, he was ablepoder to instillinstilar in me a lot of curiositycuriosidad.
60
204000
4000
03:46
And perhapsquizás to you this productproducto maymayo not look like highalto techtecnología,
61
208000
4000
03:50
but if you can imagineimagina the time when this occurredocurrió --
62
212000
3000
03:53
it was in the midmedio '40s -- this was really, in his viewver, a prettybonita piecepieza of highalto techtecnología.
63
215000
7000
04:00
Well, one of the things that is really criticalcrítico to try to
64
222000
8000
04:08
distilldestilar from that experienceexperiencia is that in additionadición to that,
65
230000
4000
de esa experiencia es que
04:12
people askpedir me and say, "Well,
66
234000
1000
la gente me pregunta y dice: bien,
04:13
how did your parentspadres treattratar you when you were a childniño?"
67
235000
3000
y ¿Cómo te trataron tus padres cuando eras niño?
04:16
And I always said that they were really toughdifícil on me.
68
238000
3000
04:19
And not toughdifícil in the sensesentido that mostmás people think of,
69
241000
2000
04:21
where your parentspadres yellgrito at you or hitgolpear you or whateverlo que sea.
70
243000
5000
04:26
They were toughdifícil in the sensesentido that, as I grewcreció up,
71
248000
2000
04:28
bothambos my mothermadre and fatherpadre would always say to me,
72
250000
4000
tanto mi madre como mi padre siempre me decían:
04:32
it's really importantimportante that you always rememberrecuerda two things.
73
254000
3000
04:35
First of all, when you go to bedcama at night,
74
257000
2000
04:37
you've got to look back on the day and make sure that you feltsintió
75
259000
3000
04:40
the day was a day whichcual you contributedcontribuido something, and
76
262000
4000
04:44
that you did everything you could to do it the bestmejor way you could.
77
266000
4000
04:48
And the secondsegundo thing they said: and we trustconfianza you,
78
270000
3000
04:51
that no matterimportar where you are or where you go,
79
273000
2000
y no importa donde estés o a donde vayas
04:53
you will always do the right thing.
80
275000
2000
tu siempre harás lo correcto.
04:55
Now, I don't know how manymuchos of you have ever donehecho that with your kidsniños,
81
277000
2000
04:57
but if you do, please trustconfianza me,
82
279000
4000
pero si lo hacen, por favor créanme
05:01
it's the mostmás pressurepresión you can put on a childniño, to say --
83
283000
2000
05:03
(LaughterRisa)
84
285000
1000
(Risas)
05:04
-- we trustconfianza you that you will always do the right thing.
85
286000
3000
05:07
When I was out with my friendsamigos drinkingbebida beercerveza,
86
289000
2000
05:09
I always was very awareconsciente of those wordspalabras --
87
291000
2000
siempre estaba muy conciente de esas palabras
05:11
(LaughterRisa)
88
293000
2000
(Risas)
05:13
-- and very carefulcuidadoso. One of the things that has happenedsucedió with technologytecnología
89
295000
5000
05:18
is that it can only be helpfulservicial if it is usefulútil, of coursecurso,
90
300000
6000
05:24
but it can only be helpfulservicial too if it's accessibleaccesible,
91
306000
3000
05:27
and it can only be helpfulservicial if it's affordableasequible.
92
309000
3000
05:30
And in today'shoy worldmundo, beingsiendo usefulútil, affordableasequible and accessibleaccesible
93
312000
3000
05:33
is not necessarilynecesariamente what happenssucede
94
315000
3000
útil, ni costeable, ni accesible...
05:36
in a lot of the technologytecnología that is donehecho todayhoy.
95
318000
2000
05:38
So, one of our passionspasiones in our companyempresa,
96
320000
3000
05:41
and now one of my personalpersonal passionspasiones, is to be ablepoder to really work harddifícil
97
323000
3000
05:44
at makingfabricación the technologytecnología usefulútil, accessibleaccesible and affordableasequible.
98
326000
5000
05:49
And to me, that is very, very criticalcrítico.
99
331000
3000
Y para mi, esto es muy crítico.
05:52
Now, technologytecnología has changedcambiado a lot sinceya que the VictrolaVictrola daysdías.
100
334000
3000
05:55
You know, we now have, of coursecurso, incrediblyincreíblemente powerfulpoderoso computersordenadores.
101
337000
5000
Saben, ahora tenemos computadoras increíblemente poderosas.
06:00
A tremendoustremendo thing that people referreferir to as a killerasesino appaplicación is calledllamado the InternetInternet.
102
342000
3000
06:03
AlthoughA pesar de que franklyfrancamente speakingHablando, we don't believe the InternetInternet is the killerasesino appaplicación.
103
345000
4000
06:07
What we believe is that the InternetInternet, franklyfrancamente,
104
349000
2000
Lo que creemos es que la Internet
06:09
is a connectionconexión of people and ideasideas.
105
351000
2000
es una conexión de gente e ideas.
06:11
The InternetInternet happenssucede to be just the mediummedio
106
353000
2000
06:13
in whichcual those people and ideasideas get connectedconectado.
107
355000
3000
la gente y las ideas se conectan;
06:16
And the powerpoder of connectingconectando people and ideasideas can be prettybonita awesomeincreíble.
108
358000
3000
06:19
And so, we believe that throughmediante all the changescambios that have occurredocurrió,
109
361000
5000
06:24
that we're facedenfrentado todayhoy with a tremendoustremendo opportunityoportunidad.
110
366000
2000
nos enfrentamos ante una tremenda oportunidad.
06:26
If we can connectconectar people and ideasideas more intenselyintensamente -- and althougha pesar de que
111
368000
7000
06:33
you've seenvisto a plethoraplétora and a myriadmiríada of productsproductos
112
375000
3000
06:36
that have come to the marketmercado todayhoy, the keyllave to me is
113
378000
5000
06:41
how manymuchos of these productsproductos are ablepoder to provideproporcionar people connectivityconectividad, in a usefulútil way,
114
383000
7000
06:48
accessibilityaccesibilidad, in an easyfácil mannermanera,
115
390000
4000
proveer accesibilidad de una manera sencilla,
06:52
and alsoademás affordabilityasequibilidad, that
116
394000
2000
y que pueda ser costeable,
06:54
regardlessindependientemente of the economiceconómico statusestado that a personpersona could have,
117
396000
4000
06:58
that they could have the opportunityoportunidad to affordpermitirse this technologytecnología.
118
400000
3000
07:01
So, when you look at that, we said, well, we would like to, then,
119
403000
4000
Considerando lo anterior, nos gustaría
07:05
enablehabilitar that a little bitpoco. We would like to createcrear an initiativeiniciativa.
120
407000
3000
impulsar eso. Nos gustaría crear una iniciativa.

And a couplePareja of yearsaños agohace at AMDAMD,

creamos esta idea diciendo:
07:13
what if we createcrear this initiativeiniciativa we call 50x15,
123
415000
3000
07:16
where we are going to aimobjetivo, that by the yearaño 2015,
124

164
548000
4000
09:30
And one of the reasonsrazones is, in SouthSur AfricaÁfrica,
165
552000
3000
09:33
it costscostos 100 dollarsdólares a monthmes to have a broadbandbanda ancha connectivityconectividad.
166

10:18
Now, one of the things I'd like to explainexplique [about] 50x15,
180
600000
4000
10:22
whichcual I think is really criticalcrítico, is that it is not a charitycaridad.
181
604000
5000
10:27
It is actuallyactualmente a businessnegocio ventureriesgo.
182
609000
3000
10:30
Let's take a smallpequeña segmentsegmento of this, of this unconnecteddesconectado worldmundo,

188
626000

10:47
ThereforePor lo tanto, when we see that, we see an opportunityoportunidad
189
629000
3000
10:50
to have a businessnegocio that addressesdirecciones the need of that segmentsegmento.
190
632000
5000

And when we embarkedembarcado in this initiativeiniciativa, from the very beginningcomenzando
191
637000

10:57
we said it very clearlyclaramente: this is not a charitycaridad.
192
639000
4000
11:01
This is really a businessnegocio ventureriesgo,
193
643000

Ésta es una iniciativa de negocios,

it would be very difficultdifícil to understandentender, and

sería muy difícil de entender y
11:29
I'll explainexplique that in just a minuteminuto.
202
671000

11:32
It is an initiativeiniciativa that is focusedcentrado on simplesencillo, accessibleaccesible and human-centriccentrado en el ser humano solutionssoluciones.
203
674000
4000
11:36
What we mean by that is,
204

11:38
you know, franklyfrancamente, the PCordenador personal was inventedinventado in 1980, roughlyaproximadamente speakingHablando

cuando digo esto, pero así es,
11:58
if you could take the namenombre of the computercomputadora off the topparte superior of it,
210

it would be very difficultdifícil to judgejuez who madehecho it,

12:08
So, there has not been a human-centriccentrado en el ser humano approachenfoque
213
710000

to addressingdireccionamiento this segmentsegmento of the marketmercado,
214
712000
2000
para dirigirse a este segmento de mercado,
12:12
so we really believe it is criticalcrítico to think of it.

12:15
