ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Robert Full - Biologist
Robert Full studies cockroach legs and gecko feet. His research is helping build tomorrow's robots, based on evolution's ancient engineering.

Why you should listen

UC Berkeley biologist Robert Full is fascinated by the motion of creatures like cockroaches, crabs and geckos having many legs, unusual feet or talented tails. He has led an effort to demonstrate the value of learning from Nature by the creating interdisciplinary collaborations of biologists, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists from academia and industry. He founded CiBER, the Center for interdisciplinary Bio-inspiration in Education and Research, and the Poly-PEDAL Laboratory, which studies the Performance, Energetics and Dynamics of Animal Locomotion (PEDAL) in many-footed creatures (Poly).

His research shows how studying a diversity of animals leads to the discovery of general principles which inspire the design of novel circuits, artificial muscles, exoskeletons, versatile scampering legged search-and-rescue robots and synthetic self-cleaning dry adhesives based on gecko feet. He is passionate about discovery-based education leading to innovation -- and he even helped Pixar’s insect animations in the film A Bug's Life.

07:04
okay, they have an active유효한 tail꼬리, but let's picture그림 them.
147
406000
2000
07:06
They're climbing등반 up a wall, or a tree나무.

07:18
And we did that experiment실험, that you see here.
152
420000

07:21
(Applause
153

07:22
And this is what we discovered
154

07:24
Now that's real레알 time. You can't see anything.
155

You know, cats고양이 falling떨어지는. Cats고양이 do this. They twist트위스트 their그들의 bodies시체.
160
439000

07:40
But geckos도마뱀 do it better.
161
442000
2000
07:42
And they do it with their그들의 tail꼬리.
162
444000
3000
07:45
So they do it with this active유효한 tail꼬리 as they swing그네 around.
163
447000
3000
07:48
And then they always land in the sort종류 of superman초인 skydiving스카이 다이빙 posture자세.
164
450000
4000
07:54
Okay, now we wondered궁금해하는, if we were right,
165
456000
2000
07:56
we should be able할 수 있는 to test테스트 this in a physical물리적 인 model모델, in a robot기계 인간.
166
458000
3000
07:59
So for TED테드 we actually사실은 built세워짐 a robot기계 인간,
167
461000

08:04
And we're going to attempt시도 the first air-righting공기 정체 response응답
169
466000
2000
08:06
in a tail꼬리, with a robot기계 인간.
170
468000
2000
08:08
If we could have the lights on it.
171
470000
2000
08:10
Okay, there it goes간다.
172
472000
5000
08:15
And show보여 주다 the video비디오.
173
477000
2000
08:20
There it is.
174
482000
2000
08:22
And it works공장 just like it does in the animal동물.
175
484000
3000
08:25
So all you need is a swing그네 of the tail꼬리 to right yourself당신 자신.
176
487000
4000
08:29
(Applause
177
491000
2000
08:31
Now, of course코스, we were normally정상적으로 frightened깜짝 놀란
178
493000
2000
08:33
because the animal동물 has no gliding활공 adaptations적응,
179
495000
2000
08:35
so we thought, "Oh that's okay. We'll put it in a vertical수직선 wind바람 tunnel터널.
180
497000
4000
08:39
We'll blow타격 the air공기 up, we'll give it a landing착륙 target목표, a tree나무 trunk트렁크,

182
504000

08:46
(Laughter
183
508000
1000
08:47
So we did. And here is what it does.
184
509000
3000
08:50
So the wind바람 is coming오는 from the bottom바닥. This is slowed느린 down 10 times타임스.
185
512000
5000
08:55
It does an equilibrium평형 glide활주. Highly고도로 controlled통제 된.
186
517000
4000
08:59
This is sort종류 of incredible놀랄 만한. But actually사실은 it's quite아주 beautiful아름다운,
187
521000
3000
09:02
when you take a picture그림 of it.
188
524000
3000
09:05
And it's better than that, it -- just in the slide슬라이드 -- maneuvers연습 in mid-air공중.
189
527000
5000
09:10
And the way it does it, is it takes its tail
190
532000
2000
09:12
and it swings그네 it one way to yaw편주 left, and it swings그네 its other way to yaw편주 right.
191
534000
4000
09:16
So we can maneuver운동 this way.
192
538000
2000
09:18
And then -- we had to film필름 this several수개 times타임스 to believe this --
193
540000
3000
09:21
it also또한 does this. Watch this.
194
543000
3000
09:24
It oscillates진동하다 its tail꼬리 up and down like a dolphin돌고래.
195
546000
2000
09:26
It can actually사실은 swim수영 through...을 통하여 the air공기.
196
548000
3000
09:29
But watch its front legs다리. Can you see what they are doing?
197
551000
5000
09:34
What does that mean for the origin유래 of flapping플 래핑 flight비행?
198
556000
3000
09:37
Maybe it's evolved진화 된 from coming오는 down from trees나무,

09:44
(Laughter

09:46
So then we wondered궁금해하는, "Can they actually사실은 maneuver운동 with this?"
203
568000
3000
09:49
So there is the landing착륙 target목표. Could they steer수송아지 towards...쪽으로 it
204
571000
3000
09:52

205
574000

09:54
And it certainly확실히 looks외모 like it.
206
576000
2000
09:56
You can see it even better from down on top상단.
207
578000
3000
09:59

209

10:04
Watch the whip채찍 of its tail꼬리 as it does it. Look at that.
210
586000
4000
10:08
It's unbelievable
211
590000
2000
10:10
So now we were really confused
10:12
because there are no reports보고 of it gliding활공.
213
594000
2000
10:14
So we went갔다, "Oh my god, we have to go to the field,
