strewn about our morning papers,
uitgezaaid over de ochtendkrant,
of our sisters, spouses, small children.
van onze zusters, echtgenoten, kinderen.
when she asks, as she certainly should,
zeg haar dan over dit jaar
we didn't own it outright.
we kregen haar slechts in bruikleen.
van onze soldaten vergoelijkten,
for every way we used our privates
naar onze zwakke plekken,
zonder groen licht,
that enforced them.
die de wetten handhaafden.
over deze oorlogstijd,
door meer van hetzelfde,
against the outlines of our fallen,
zij aan zij met hen die sneuvelden,
and moved with courageous abandon
moedig maar losbandig werden,
het gevaar recht aankeken,
wegdoken en ontweken,
ducked and parried,
doodsbedreigingen verzamelden,
collected death threats,
and found a running mate,"
hoog tijd voor huisje-boompje-beestje",
enkel angst beschamend vonden,
shamed nothing but fear,
maar we bedoelden uiteraard
to be docile or small.
om volgzaam en klein te zijn.
voor het eerst ons vrouw-zijn,
that we were women,
and some of us did not,
anderen niet,
of dat ons echt maakte
whether that made us real
or heir to your triumph,
of de erfgenaam van je triomf,
teetering towards woman,
wankelend op weg naar het vrouw-zijn,
van je opofferingen,
zal heilig voor haar zijn,
"Waar was jij?
Were you fearful or fearsome?
Was je bevreesd of schrikwekkend?
in the year it was time?
in het jaar dat ertoe deed?
which bones had to break?
in de weg die je voor me uitstippelde?
en hoe gaat het met jou, mama?
om je fronsende wenkbrauwen,
about the arc of your brow,
wil weten welk cadeau je bij je hebt.
already carried so much, wants to know
what light did you keep from extinction?
or were you roused?
wat deed jij toen met je privileges?
what did you do with your privilege?
je stoute schoenen aan?
or directly into the flame?
or treat it like a liability?
of zag je ze als een nadeel?
of "nasty" or "less than"?
'smerig' en 'minder dan'?
or a clenched fist?
of met gebalde vuist?
Maak dat je missie.
drawn on my face like a dagger,
al had je geen schijn van kans.
in spite of crooked odds.
in the company of courage,
op jezelf aangewezen was.
when you just had yourself.
and the sisters beside them,
en hun zusters
tijdperk der helden.
