ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Wayne McGregor - Dancer and Choreographer
Wayne McGregor and his dancers explore the uncharted territory where mind and movement intersect.

Why you should listen

Wayne McGregor is a man in perpetual motion. When not incubating new approaches to choreography with his company, Random Dance, he creates works for ballet, theatre and opera companies worldwide--including the Royal Ballet in London, where he's choreographer in residence, and contemporary dance powerhouse Sadler's Wells. In ongoing collaborations with psychologists, neuroscientists and cognitive scientists, Random dancers are helping researchers measure and analyze how the brain works in the creative process. Whatʼs emerged so far is that we can, and do, think with our bodies.

McGregor is no stranger to pop culture: he's designed movement for Thom Yorke of Radiohead and for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This spring he collaborated with DJ Mark Ronson on Carbon Life, a piece for the Royal Ballet with vocals from Boy George. And he's creating a new dance piece for thousands of dancers in Londonʼs Trafalgar Square on Saturday, July 14.

As you might imagine, I'm absolutely passionate
0
496
1493
Como dá pra imaginar, sou absolutamente apaixonado
00:17
about dance. I'm passionate about making it,
1
1989
2205
pela dança. Sou apaixonado por dançar,
00:20
about watching it, about encouraging others
2
4194
2604
por assistir dança, por estimular outras pessoas
00:22
to participate in it,
3
6798
1869
a dançarem,
00:24
and I'm also really passionate about creativity.
4
8667
2623
e também tenho grande paixão pela criatividade.
00:27
Creativity for me is something that's absolutely critical,
5
11290
4117
00:31
and I think it's something that you can teach.
6
15407
2385
00:33
I think the technicities of creativity can be taught
7
17792
2261
00:35
and shared, and I think you can find out things
8
20053
2166
00:38
about your own personal physical signature,
9
22219
2269
sobre seu próprio estilo físico pessoal,
00:40
your own cognitive habits, and use that as
10
24488
1912
00:42
a point of departure to misbehave beautifully.
11
26400
3452
00:45
I was born in the 1970s, and John Travolta was big
12
29852
4403
00:50
in those days: "Grease," "Saturday Night Fever,"
13
34255
2471
naquele tempo: "Brilhantina", "Os embalos de sábado à noite",
00:52
and he provided a fantastic kind of male role model for me
14
36726
2677
00:55
to start dancing. My parents were very up for me going.
15
39403
2780
quando comecei a dançar. Meus pais estavam muito felizes por mim.
00:58
They absolutely encouraged me to take risks, to go,
16
42183
2862
Eles me deram apoio total para assumir riscos, a ir,
01:00
to try, to try. I had an opportunity, an access
17
45045
4225
a tentar, e experimentar. Eu tive uma oportunidade, um acesso
01:05
to a local dance studio, and I had an enlightened teacher
18
49270
3591
01:08
who allowed me to make up my own and invent
19
52861
3105
que me permitiu criar e inventar
01:11
my own dances, so what she did was let me make up
20
55966
2994
01:14
my own ballroom and Latin American dances to teach
21
58960
2949
01:17
to my peers.
22
61909
1372
aos meus colegas.
01:19
And that was the very first time that I found an opportunity
23
63281
2769
01:21
to feel that I was able to express my own voice,
24
66050
2885
01:24
and that's what's fueled me, then, to become a choreographer.
25
68935
2818
e isso foi o que me incentivou a me tornar um coreógrafo.
01:27
I feel like I've got something to say and something to share.
26
71753
3016
Sinto que tenho algo a dizer e a compartilhar.
01:30
And I guess what's interesting is, is that I am now obsessed
27
74769
3577
E o interessante é que agora estou obcecado
01:34
with the technology of the body.
28
78346
1587
pela tecnologia do corpo.
01:35
I think it's the most technologically literate thing that we have,
29
79933
3296
01:39
and I'm absolutely obsessed with finding a way
30
83229
3099
01:42
of communicating ideas through the body to audiences
31
86328
3298
01:45
that might move them, touch them,
32
89626
2153
de uma forma que possa comovê-las, tocá-las,
01:47
help them think differently about things.
33
91779
3102
01:50
So for me, choreography is very much a process
34
94881
2602
01:53
of physical thinking. It's very much in mind,
35
97483
3409
de pensamento físico. Está muito na mente,
01:56
as well as in body, and it's a collaborative process.
36
100892
3263
02:00
It's something that I have to do with other people.
37
104155
1826
02:01
You know, it's a distributed cognitive process in a way.
38
105981
2754
02:04
I work often with designers and visual artists,
39
108735
2598
Sempre trabalho com designers e artistas visuais,
02:07
obviously dancers and other choreographers,
40
111333
2608
e obviamente com dançarinos e outros coreógrafos,
02:09
but also, more and more, with economists,
41
113941
4371
mas também, mais e mais, com economistas,
02:14
anthropologists, neuroscientists, cognitive scientists,
42
118312
4306
antropólogos, neurocientistas, cientistas cognitivos,
02:18
people really who come from very different domains of
43
122618
2767
02:21
expertise, where they bring their intelligence to bear
44
125385
2993
do conhecimento e que emprestam seu conhecimento
02:24
on a different kind of creative process.
45
128378
2388
para um tipo de processo criativo diferente.
02:26
What I thought we would do today a little bit is
46
130766
3203
02:29
explore this idea of physical thinking,
47
133969
2261
é explorar essa ideia de pensamento físico,
02:32
and we're all experts in physical thinking.
48
136230
1801
e somos todos especialistas no pensamento físico.
02:33
Yeah, you all have a body, right?
49
138031
1378
Isso! Todos vocês têm um corpo, certo?
02:35
And we all know what that body is like in the real world,
50
139409
2191
02:37
so one of the aspects of physical thinking
51
141600
1694
então um dos aspectos do pensamento físico
02:39
that we think about a lot is this notion of proprioception,
52
143294
2914
02:42
the sense of my own body in the space in the real world.
53
146208
3065
a consciência de meu próprio corpo no espaço no mundo real.
02:45
So, we all understand what it feels like to know
54
149273
3386
Assim, todos nós sabemos como é saber
02:48
where the ends of your fingers are
55
152659
1353
onde estão as pontas dos nossos dedos
02:49
when you hold out your arms, yeah?
56
154012
1997
quando esticamos os braços, não é mesmo?
02:51
You absolutely know that when you're going to grab a cup,
57
156009
2815
02:54
or that cup moves and you have to renavigate it.
58
158824
1910
02:56
So we're experts in physical thinking already.
59
160734
1958
Portanto já somos peritos no pensamento físico.
02:58
We just don't think about our bodies very much.
60
162692
2036
Apenas não pensamos muito sobre nosso corpo.
03:00
We only think about them when they go wrong, so, when
61
164728
3105
03:03
there's a broken arm, or when you have a heart attack,
62
167833
2238
03:05
then you become really very aware of your bodies.
63
170071
2465
então a gente fica bastante consciente dos nossos corpos.
03:08
But how is it that we can start to think about using
64
172536
2287
03:10
choreographic thinking, kinesthetic intelligence, to arm
65
174823
3408
o pensamento coreográfico, a inteligência cinestésica, para sustentar
03:14
the ways in which we think about things more generally?
66
178231
2358
03:16
What I thought I'd do is, I'd make a TED premiere.
67
180589
2956
03:19
I'm not sure if this is going to be good or not.
68
183545
2303
03:21
I'll just be doing it.
69
185848
1975
Simplesmente vou fazer.
03:23
I thought what I'd do is, I'd use three versions
70
187823
2087
Pensei em fazer o seguinte - vou usar três versões
03:25
of physical thinking to make something.
71
189910
1644
do pensamento físico para fazer algo.
03:27
I want to introduce you. This is Paolo. This is Catarina.
72
191554
3116
Gostaria de lhes apresentar o Paolo e a Catarina.
03:30
(Applause)
73
194670
2848
(Aplausos)
03:33
They have no idea what we're going to do.
74
197518
2604
03:36
So this is not the type of choreography where
75
200122
2344
03:38
I already have in mind what I'm going to make,
76
202466
2344
03:40
where I've fixed the routine in my head
77
204810
2541
03:43
and I'm just going to teach it to them,
78
207351
1590
e vou simplesmente repassar a eles,
03:44
and these so-called empty vessels are just going to learn it.
79
208941
2309
e eles do nada vão aprendê-la.
03:47
That's not the methodology at all that we work with.
80
211250
2934
03:50
But what's important about it is how it is that they're
81
214184
4333
03:54
grasping information, how they're taking information,
82
218517
2047
absorver a informação, como vão pegar a informação,
03:56
how they're using it, and how they're thinking with it.
83
220564
2131
03:58
I'm going to start really, really simply.
84
222695
1448
04:00
Usually, dance has a stimulus or stimuli, and I thought
85
224143
2977
04:03
I'd take something simple, TED logo, we can all see it,
86
227120
3104
04:06
it's quite easy to work with, and I'm going to do something
87
230224
2349
04:08
very simply, where you take one idea from a body,
88
232573
2789
04:11
and it happens to be my body, and translate that
89
235362
2004
04:13
into somebody else's body,
90
237366
2192
no corpo de uma outra pessoa.
04:15
so it's a direct transfer, transformation of energy.
91
239558
3354
04:18
And I'm going to imagine this, you can do this too if you like,
92
242912
2780
04:21
that I'm going to just take the letter "T" and I'm going
93
245692
2238
vou simplesmente pegar a letra "T" e vou
04:23
to imagine it in mind, and I'm going to place that outside in
94
247930
2875
imaginá-la na minha mente, e vou colocá-la aqui fora,
04:26
the real world. So I absolutely see a letter "T" in front of me.
95
250805
3904
no mundo real. Assim, estou realmente vendo a letra "T" na minha frente.
04:30
Yeah? It's absolutely there.
96
254709
1405
Certo? Está realmente aqui.
04:32
I can absolutely walk around it when I see it, yeah?
97
256114
2980
04:34
It has a kind of a grammar. I know what I'm going to do
98
259094
1925
Tem um tipo de gramática. Sei o que vou fazer
04:36
with it, and I can start to describe it, so I can describe it
99
261019
2935
04:39
very simply. I can describe it in my arms, right?
100
263954
2971
de maneira bem simples. Posso descrevê-la com meus braços, certo?
04:42
So all I did was take my hand and then I move my hand.
101
266925
2678
04:45
I can describe it, whoa, in my head, you know? Whoa.
102
269603
2187
Posso descrevê-la com a cabeça, percebem?
04:47
Okay. I can do also my shoulder. Yeah?
103
271790
2308
OK. Também posso usar meu ombro, certo?
04:49
It gives me something to do, something to work towards.
104
274098
3008
04:53
If I were to take that letter "T" and flatten it down
105
277106
2118
04:55
on the floor, here, maybe just off the floor,
106
279224
2936
no chão, aqui, talvez fora do chão,
04:58
all of a sudden I could do maybe something with my knee,
107
282160
1473
04:59
yeah? Whoa. So If I put the knee and the arms together,
108
283633
2551
Certo? Uou.
05:02
I've got something physical, yeah? And I can start to build something.
109
286184
3560
tenho algo físico, certo? E posso começar a construir algo.
05:05
So what I'm going to do just for one and a half minutes or so
110
289744
2461
05:08
is I'm going to take that concept, I'm going to make something,
111
292205
2600
é pegar aquele conceito e fazer algo,
05:10
and the dancers behind me are going to interpret it,
112
294805
2878
05:13
they're going to snapshot it, they're going to take
113
297683
1644
vão pegar alguns momentos, vão pegar
05:15
aspects of it, and it's almost like I'm offloading memory
114
299327
2979
05:18
and they're holding onto memory? Yeah?
115
302306
2116
e eles estivessem pegando essa memória, certo?
05:20
And we'll see what we come up with.
116
304422
1404
E vamos ver no que dá.
05:21
So just have a little watch about how they're, how they're
117
305826
2155
05:23
accessing this and what they're doing,
118
307981
1308
acessando isso e o que estão fazendo,
05:25
and I'm just going to take this letter "T," the letter "E,"
119
309289
1961
e eu vou simplesmente pegar esta letra "T", a letra "E",
05:27
and the letter "D," to make something. Okay. Here goes.
120
311250
3031
e a letra "D", para fazer algo. OK. Aqui está.
05:30
So I have to get myself in the zone. Right.
121
314281
3384
Certo.
05:47
It's a bit of a cross of my arm.
122
331877
2874
É tipo uma cruz do meu braço.
05:56
So all I'm doing is exploring this space of "T"
123
340438
4651
Assim, tudo que estou fazendo é explorar o espaço do "T"
06:00
and flashing through it with some action.
124
345089
5315
e passando por ele com alguma ação.
06:06
I'm not remembering what I'm doing.
125
350404
2403
Não estou memorizando o que estou fazendo.
06:08
I'm just working on my task. My task is this "T."
126
352807
2763
Estou apenas fazendo desempenhando minha tarefa. Minha tarefa é este "T".
06:11
Going to watch it from the side, whoa.
127
355570
3608
Vou observá-lo de lado, uou.
06:16
Strike moment.
128
360947
1870
Momento de arremesso.
06:18
That's it.
129
362817
3541
É isso.
06:23
So we're starting to build a phrase.
130
367789
4326
Então vamos começar a construir uma frase.
06:28
So what they're doing, let's see, something like that,
131
372131
1953
06:29
so what they're doing is grasping aspects of that movement
132
374084
3147
06:33
and they're generating it into a phrase.
133
377231
1905
e o transformando numa frase.
06:35
You can see the speed is extremely quick, yeah?
134
379136
2258
Dá pra ver a velocidade dos movimentos, certo?
06:37
I'm not asking them to copy exactly.
135
381394
2290
06:39
They're using the information that they receive
136
383684
2357
Eles estão usando a informação que recebem
06:41
to generate the beginnings of a phrase.
137
386041
3316
para gerar o começo de uma frase.
06:45
I can watch that and that can tell me something
138
389357
1921
06:47
about how it is that they're moving.
139
391278
2753
sobre como é que eles se movem.
06:49
Yeah, they're super quick, right?
140
394031
3080
Isso! Eles são super rápidos, não é mesmo?
06:53
So I've taken this aspect of TED and translated it
141
397111
3784
Assim, peguei esse aspecto do TED e o traduzi
06:56
into something that's physical.
142
400895
2675
em algo que é físico.
07:01
Some dancers, when they're watching action,
143
405616
2584
Alguns dançarinos, quando estão assistindo ação,
07:04
take the overall shape, the arc of the movement,
144
408200
2475
tomam o conjunto da forma, o arco do movimento,
07:06
the kinetic sense of the movement,
145
410675
2105
o sentido cinético do movimento,
07:08
and use that for memory.
146
412780
1595
e usam aquilo para memorizar.
07:10
Some work very much in specific detail.
147
414375
2283
Alguns trabalham essencialmente com detalhe específico.
07:12
They start with small little units and build it up.
148
416658
3818
Eles começam com pequenas unidades e vão construindo a partir daí.
07:16
Okay, you've got something? One more thing.
149
420476
2028
Ok, vocês têm algo? Mais uma coisa.
07:33
So they're solving this problem for me,
150
438012
3148
07:37
having a little --
151
441160
3833
tendo um pouco ---
07:40
They're constructing that phrase.
152
444993
1861
Estão construindo aquela frase.
07:42
They have something and they're going to hold on to it,
153
446854
1476
Eles têm algo e vão guardar isso.
07:44
yeah? One way of making.
154
448330
2023
Certo? Uma forma de fazer.
07:46
That's going to be my beginning in this world premiere.
155
450353
2356
07:48
Okay. From there I'm going to do a very different thing.
156
452709
1974
OK. A partir daí vou fazer uma coisa bem diferente.
07:50
So basically I'm going to make a duet.
157
454683
2716
Basicamente vou fazer um dueto.
07:53
I want you to think about them as architectural objects,
158
457399
3495
07:56
so what they are, are just pure lines.
159
460894
2296
como se fossem apenas linhas puras.
07:59
They're no longer people, just pure lines, and I'm going
160
463190
2556
08:01
to work with them almost as objects to think with, yeah?
161
465746
4225
08:05
So what I'm thinking about is taking
162
469971
2477
08:08
a few physical extensions from the body as I move, and
163
472448
3925
umas poucas extensões físicas do corpo enquanto me movo, e
08:12
I move them, and I do that by suggesting things to them:
164
476373
2298
08:14
If, then; if, then. Okay, so here we go.
165
478671
3177
se, então; se, então. OK, então vamos lá.
08:17
Just grab this arm.
166
481848
1176
Segure esse braço.
08:18
Can you place that down into the floor?
167
483024
3025
Pode colocar aquele no chão?
08:21
Yeah, down to the floor. Can you go underneath?
168
486049
2206
Isso, no chão. Pode passar por baixo?
08:24
Yeah. Cat, can you put leg over that side? Yeah.
169
488255
3817
Isso. Cat, você consegue colocar a perna naquele lado? Isso.
08:27
Can you rotate?
170
492072
1449
Pode rodar?
08:29
Whoom, just go back to the beginning.
171
493521
1116
Whoom, simplesmente volte para o começo.
08:30
Here we go, ready? And ... bam, bake ... (clicks metronome)
172
494637
6348
Lá vamos nós, prontos? E ... bam, bei ... (Ritmo do cronômetro)
08:36
Great. Okay, from there, you're both getting up.
173
500985
1924
Ótimo. OK, daqui, ambos se levantam.
08:38
You're both getting up. Here we go. Good, now? Them.
174
502909
3525
Os dois se levantam. Vamos lá. Bom, agora? Eles.
08:42
(Applause)
175
506449
1569
(Aplausos)
08:43
So from there, from there, we're both getting up,
176
508018
2701
Então daqui, daqui, levantem os dois,
08:46
we're both getting up, going in this direction,
177
510719
1243
ambos levantando, indo nessa direção,
08:47
going underneath. Whoa, whoa, underneath.
178
511962
2338
indo por baixo. Uou, Uou, por baixo.
08:50
Whoa, underneath, whoo-um. Yeah? Underneath. Jump.
179
514300
3964
Uou, por baixo, uou-um. Certo? Por baixo. Salto.
08:54
Underneath. Jump. Paolo, kick. Don't care where. Kick.
180
518264
4182
Por baixo. Salto, Paolo, chute. Não importa onde. Chute.
08:58
Kick, replace, change a leg. Kick, replace, change the leg.
181
522446
3419
Chute, substitui, mudar uma perna. Chute, substitui, muda uma perna.
09:01
Yeah? Okay? Cat, almost get his head. Almost get his head.
182
525865
3709
Certo? OK? Cat, quase toque a cabeça dele. Quase alcance a cabeça dele.
09:05
Whoaa. Just after it, maybe. Whoaa, whaaay, ooh.
183
529574
4865
Uou. Logo depois disso, talvez. Uou, Uai, oh.
09:10
Grab her waist, come up back into her first, whoom, spin,
184
534439
4318
Segure a cintura dela, volta a subir com ela, uou, roda,
09:14
turn her, whoo-aa. (Snaps) Great.
185
538757
1606
vira-a, uoa. (Estala os dedos) Ótimo.
09:16
Okay, let's have a little go from the beginning of that.
186
540363
2359
Ok, vamos tentar do início.
09:18
Just, let me slow down here. Fancy having eight -- (Laughter)
187
542722
5509
Imaginem passarem oito... (Risos)
09:24
Fancy having eight hours with me in a day.
188
548231
2802
Imaginem passar oito horas por dia comigo.
09:26
So, maybe too much. So, here we go, ready, and -- (Clicks metronome)
189
551033
4506
Talvez seja demais. Então, vamos lá. Preparados, e -- (Ritmo do cronômetro)
09:31
(Clicks metronome)
190
555539
7583
(Som do metrônomo)
09:39
Nice, good job. Yeah? Okay. (Applause)
191
563122
3141
Ótimo. Bom trabalho. Isso aí. OK (Aplausos)
09:42
Okay, not bad. (Applause) A little bit more?
192
566263
2998
OK. Nada mau. (Aplausos) Um pouco mais?
09:45
Yeah. Just a little bit more, here we go, from that place.
193
569261
2792
09:47
Separate. Face the front. Separate. Face the front.
194
572053
2473
Separados. Olhem pra frente. Sepados. Olhem pra frente.
09:50
Imagine that there's a circle in front of you, yeah?
195
574526
2225
09:52
Avoid it. Avoid it. Whoom. Kick it out of the way.
196
576751
4895
Evitem ele. Evitem ele. Tirem ele da frente.
09:57
Kick it out of the way. Throw it into the audience. Whoom.
197
581646
4089
Tirem ele do caminho. Joguem ele para a plateia.
10:01
Throw it into the audience again.
198
585735
1043
Joguem para a plateia de novo.
10:02
We've got mental architecture, we're sharing it,
199
586778
1882
Nós conseguimos uma arquitetura mental e estamos compartilhando,
10:04
therefore solving a problem. They're enacting it.
200
588660
1892
e assim resolvendo um problema. Eles estão representando isso.
10:06
Let me just see that a little bit. Ready, and go.
201
590552
2183
Deixem-me ver aquilo um pouco. Preparados, e vão.
10:08
(Clicks metronome)
202
592735
4503
((Ritmo do cronômetro)
10:13
Okay, brilliant. Okay, here we go. From the beginning,
203
597238
1665
OK, excelente. OK, aqui vamos nós. Do começo.,
10:14
can we do our phrases first? And then that.
204
598903
2938
podemos fazer nossas frases primeiro? E depois aquilo.
10:17
And we're going to build something now, organize it,
205
601841
1689
E vamos construir algo agora, organizem isso,
10:19
the phrases. Here we go. Nice and slow?
206
603530
1649
as frases. Vamos nós. Delicado e devagar?
10:21
Ready and go ... um. (Clicks metronome)
207
605179
3402
Aprontar e ir ... um. (Ritmo do cronômetro)
10:24
(Clicks metronome)
208
608581
4396
(Ritmo do cronômetro)
10:28
The duet starts. (Clicks metronome)
209
612977
3684
Começo do dueto. (Ritmo do cronômetro)
10:32
(Clicks metronome)
210
616661
13326
(Som do metrônomo)
10:45
So yeah, okay, good. Okay, nice, very nice. (Applause)
211
629987
3437
Assim, OK, bom. OK, ótimo, muito bom. (Aplausos)
10:49
So good. So -- (Applause)
212
633424
1710
Bom demais. Então -- (Aplausos)
10:51
Okay. So that was -- (Applause)
213
635134
3247
OK. Então isso foi -- (Aplausos)
10:54
Well done. (Applause)
214
638381
1894
Muito bem. (Aplausos)
10:56
That was the second way of working.
215
640275
1559
Essa foi a segunda forma de trabalhar.
10:57
The first one, body-to-body transfer, yeah,
216
641834
2372
A primeira, transferência corpo a corpo, isso,
11:00
with an outside mental architecture that I work with
217
644206
2748
11:02
that they hold memory with for me.
218
646954
2072
aquela que eles memorizaram para mim.
11:04
The second one, which is using them as objects to think
219
649026
2238
11:07
with their architectural objects, I do a series of
220
651264
1768
com seus objetos arquitetônicos. Faço uma série de
11:08
provocations, I say, "If this happens, then that.
221
653032
2473
provocações e digo: "Se isso acontecer, então aquilo.
11:11
If this, if that happens -- " I've got lots of methods like that,
222
655505
2355
Se isso, se aquilo acontecer". Tenho montes de métodos como esses,
11:13
but it's very, very quick, and this is a third method.
223
657860
2631
11:16
They're starting it already, and this is a task-based method,
224
660491
2754
11:19
where they have the autonomy to make
225
663245
1681
11:20
all of the decisions for themselves.
226
664926
1806
todas as decisões por si próprios.
11:22
So I'd like us just to do, we're going to do a little
227
666732
1259
Assim, gostaria que fizéssemos um pouco
11:23
mental dance, a little, in this little one minute,
228
667991
3422
11:27
so what I'd love you to do is imagine,
229
671413
1899
então gostaria que imaginassem -
11:29
you can do this with your eyes closed, or open, and if you
230
673312
2101
11:31
don't want to do it you can watch them, it's up to you.
231
675413
2478
11:33
Just for a second, think about that word "TED" in front of
232
677891
3740
11:37
you, so it's in mind, and it's there right in front of your mind.
233
681631
3301
11:40
What I'd like you to do is transplant that outside
234
684932
2237
11:43
into the real world, so just imagine that word "TED"
235
687169
3543
para o mundo real. Assim, imaginem a palavra "TED"
11:46
in the real world.
236
690712
2333
no mundo real.
11:48
What I'd like you to do what that is take an aspect of it.
237
693045
2940
Agora gostaria que pegassem um aspecto dela.
11:51
I'm going to zone in on the "E," and I'm going to
238
695985
3140
Vou pegar o "E" e vou aumentar
11:55
scale that "E" so it's absolutely massive,
239
699125
2647
aquele "E" até ficar absolutamente gigante,
11:57
so I'm scaling that "E" so it's absolutely massive,
240
701772
2712
então estou aumentando aquele "E" até ficar gigante,
12:00
and then I'm going to give it dimensionality.
241
704484
1171
e aí dou a ele uma dimensão.
12:01
I'm going to think about it in 3D space. So now,
242
705655
2252
Vou pensar sobre ele no espaço 3D. Então agora,
12:03
instead of it just being a letter that's in front of me,
243
707907
2473
12:06
it's a space that my body can go inside of.
244
710380
2881
12:09
I now decide where I'm going to be in that space,
245
713261
2717
Agora decido onde vou estar naquele espaço.
12:11
so I'm down on this small part of the bottom rib
246
715978
4471
12:16
of the letter "E," and I'm thinking about it, and I'm imagining
247
720449
2868
12:19
this space that's really high and above. If I asked you to
248
723317
3454
12:22
reach out — you don't have to literally do it, but in mind —
249
726771
2757
12:25
reach out to the top of the "E," where would you reach?
250
729528
3050
tocar o topo do "E", onde vocês tocariam?
12:28
If you reach with your finger, where would it be?
251
732578
1978
Se tocassem com os dedos, onde seria?
12:30
If you reach with your elbow, where would it be?
252
734556
2892
Se tocassem com o cotovelo, onde seria?
12:33
If I already then said about that space that you're in,
253
737448
3897
12:37
let's infuse it with the color red, what does that do
254
741345
2359
12:39
to the body? If I then said to you, what happens if
255
743704
2726
ao corpo? E se lhes perguntasse o que aconteceria
12:42
that whole wall on the side of "E" collapses and you have to
256
746430
3274
se aquela parede toda do lado do "E" caísse e vocês tivessem de
12:45
use your weight to put it back up,
257
749704
1846
usar seu peso para segurá-la,
12:47
what would you be able to do with it?
258
751550
2424
o que conseguiriam fazer com ela?
12:49
So this is a mental picture, I'm describing a mental,
259
753974
1897
12:51
vivid picture that enables dancers to make choices
260
755871
4005
12:55
for themselves about what to make.
261
759876
2381
por eles mesmos sobre o que fazer.
12:58
Okay, you can open your eyes if you had them closed.
262
762257
1435
12:59
So the dancers have been working on them.
263
763692
1374
Então os dançarinos têm trabalhado nelas.
13:00
So just keep working on them for a little second.
264
765066
1856
13:02
So they've been working on those mental architectures in the here.
265
766922
3016
Então vocês têm trabalhado nessas arquiteturas mentais aqui.
13:05
I know, I think we should keep them as a surprise.
266
769938
2502
13:08
So here goes, world premiere dance. Yeah? Here we go.
267
772440
2580
Então aqui vai, estreia mundial de dança. Certo? Lá vamos nós.
13:10
TED dance. Okay. Here it comes. I'm going to organize it quickly.
268
775020
3521
Dança do TED. OK. Vamos lá. Vou organizá-la rapidamente.
13:14
So, you're going to do the first solo that we made,
269
778541
3284
Então, vocês vão fazer o primeiro solo que fizemos,
13:17
yeah blah blah blah blah, we go into the duet, yeah,
270
781825
2799
13:20
blah blah blah blah. The next solo, blah blah blah blah,
271
784624
3750
blá blá blá blá. O próximo solo, blá blá blá blá,
13:24
yeah, and both at the same time, you do the last solutions.
272
788374
3724
13:27
Okay? Okay. Ladies and gentlemen, world premiere,
273
792098
2542
OK? OK. Senhoras e Senhores, estreia mundial da
13:30
TED dance, three versions of physical thinking. (Applause)
274
794640
2768
dança do TED, três versões do pensamento físico. (Aplausos)
13:33
Well, clap afterwards, let's see if it's any good, yeah? (Laughter)
275
797408
2696
(Risos)
13:36
So yeah, let's clap -- yeah, let's clap afterwards.
276
800104
2499
Então é isso, vamos bater palmas -- isso, vamos bater palmas no final.
13:38
Here we go. Catarina, big moment, here we go, one.
277
802603
2162
Aqui vamos nós. Catarina, grande momento, vamos lá, um.
13:40
(Clicks metronome)
278
804765
25381
(Ritmo do cronômetro)
14:06
