ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Michael Moschen - Juggler
Quite simply, Michael Moschen has revolutionized juggling, refining it into an art and a bit of a science. With a few flying balls and well-chosen props he will completely re-wire your notions of the physically possible.

Why you should listen

A high school dropout turned MacArthur "genius grant" recipient, Michael Moschen is an art juggler, spawning scores of imitators and an entire methodology of crystal-ball juggling he likes to call Dynamic Manipulation. (The previously mentioned imitators call it "Contact Juggling," a term that Moschen himself despises.)

With a penchant for discipline, choreography, and catching flying balls -- and using props that include flaming torches, hoops, rods, and a ten-foot plastic triangle enclosure within which he stands, bouncing balls against the sides to achieve incredible patterns and velocities -- he creates illusions of speed and light that push the envelope of what is possible within this age-old circus art. Many of his techniques and routines are showcased in In Motion with Michael Moschen, a program produced in 1991 for National Public Television's Great Performances series.

Ca jucător de golf, şi ca puşti,

00:50

00:56
And that was the mythologyMitologie of skillabilitate.
12
38000
3000
Aceasta a fost mitologia deprinderii.
00:59
So, one of the things that I love to do is to exploreexplora skillabilitate.
13
41000
3000
01:02
And sincede cand RichardRichard put me on this wholeîntreg thing with musicmuzică --

01:11
But TodTod couldn'tnu a putut come and the projectproiect is sortfel of somewhereundeva,

I'm not sure whetherdacă it's happeninglucru the way we thought, or not.
18
56000
3000
01:17
But I'm going to exploreexplora skillabilitate, and jugglingjonglerie,
19
59000
4000
Dar voi explora abilităţile, şi jongleria,
01:21
and basicallype scurt visualvizual musicmuzică, I guessghici.
20

şi practic muzica vizuală, cred.

Mulţumesc. Vă mulţumesc. Acum, jonglatul poate fi foarte amuzant,
04:40
playa juca with skillabilitate and playa juca with spacespaţiu, playa juca with rhythmritm.
25

04:55
usingutilizând not just my handsmâini -- because a lot of jugglingjonglerie is hand-orientedmână-orientate spre --
30
277000
4000
04:59

ci folosind ritmul corpului şi picioarelor mele,
05:01
and controllingcontrolul the ballsbile with my feetpicioare.

şi controlând mingile cu picioarele.
06:22
(ApplauseAplauze)
33

(Aplauze)
06:27
Thanksmulţumesc. Now, this nextUrmător → sectionsecțiune was an attemptatentat, încercare to exploreexplora spacespaţiu.
34
369000
8000
06:35
You see, I think RichardRichard said something about people that are againstîmpotriva something.
35
377000
4000
Vedeţi voi, cred că Richard a spus ceva despre oamenii care sunt împotriva a ceva.
06:39
Well, a lot of people think jugglersjongleri defysfida gravitygravitatie or do stuffchestie.
36
381000
6000
Multă lume crede că jongleurii sfidează gravitaţia, sau fac ceva.
06:45
Well, I kinddrăguț of, from my childhoodcopilărie and golfgolf and all that,
37
387000
3000
06:48
it's a processproces of joiningaderarea with forcesforţele.
38
390000
3000
că e un proces de a te uni cu forţele.
06:51
And so what I'd like to do is try to figurefigura out
39
393000
1000
06:52
how to joina adera with the spacespaţiu throughprin the techniquetehnică.
40
394000
3000
06:55
So jugglingjonglerie gravitygravitatie -- up, down.
41
397000
5000
Jonglăm deci cu gravitatea -- sus, jos.
07:00
If you figurefigura out what up and down really are,
42
402000
4000
07:07
it's a complexcomplex physicalfizic seta stabilit of skillsaptitudini
43
409000
2000
e un set complex de abilităţi fizice
07:09
to be ablecapabil to throwarunca a ballminge down and up and everything,
44
411000
3000
să fii în stare să arunci o minge în jos şi în sus,
07:12
but then you addadăuga in sidewayslateral.
45
414000
2000
dar apoi adaugi mişcarea pe laterală.
07:37
(ApplauseAplauze)
46
439000
5000
(Aplauze)
07:43
Now, I look at it somewhatoarecum as a way -- when you learnînvăța jugglingjonglerie
47
445000
5000
07:48
what you learnînvăța is how to feel with your eyesochi, and see with your handsmâini
48
450000
4000
07:52
because you're not looking at your handsmâini,
49
454000
2000
pentru că nu te uiţi la mâini,
07:54
you're looking at where the ballsbile are or you're looking at the audiencepublic.
50
456000
3000
07:57
So this nextUrmător → partparte is really a way of understandingînţelegere spacespaţiu and rhythmritm,
51
459000
5000
08:02
with the obviousevident referencereferinţă to the feetpicioare,
52
464000
2000
cu referirea evidentă la picioare.
08:04
but it's alsode asemenea time -- where the feetpicioare were, where the ballsbile were.
53
466000
5000
09:25
(ApplauseAplauze)
54
547000
10000
(Aplauze)
09:35
Thanksmulţumesc. So, visualvizual musicmuzică: rhythmritm and complexitycomplexitate.
55
557000
5000
Mulţumesc. Deci muzică vizuală, ritm şi complexitate.
09:40
I'm going to buildconstrui towardscătre complexitycomplexitate now.
56
562000
2000
Voi merge încet către complexitate acum.
09:42
JugglingJonglerie threeTrei ballsbile is simplesimplu and normalnormal.
57
564000
4000
09:46
(LaughterRâs)
58
568000
2000
(Râsete)
09:48
ExcuseScuza me.
59
570000
2000
Scuze.
09:50
(LaughterRâs)
60
572000
2000
(Râsete)
09:52
We're jugglersjongleri, OK. And remembertine minte, you're transposingtranspunere,
61
574000
3000
Suntem jongleuri, în regulă. Şi, aduceţi-vă aminte, vă transpuneţi,
09:55
you're gettingobtinerea into a subculturesubcultură here.
62
577000
2000
intraţi într-o subcultură aici.
09:57
(LaughterRâs)
63
579000
1000
(Râsete)
09:58
And jugglingjonglerie -- the ballsbile crosscruce and all that.
64
580000
3000
Jonglerii cu mingi care se încrucişează.
10:01
OK, if you keep them in theiral lor assignedalocate pathscăi you get parallelparalel lineslinii
65
583000
4000
10:05
of differentdiferit heightsînălțimi, but then hopefullyin speranta even rhythmritm.
66
587000
3000
10:08
And you can changeSchimbare the rhythmritm -- good, MichaelMichael.
67
590000
4000
Poţi schimba ritmul -- bravo Michael.
10:12
You can changeSchimbare the rhythmritm, if you get out of the lightslumini.
68
594000
2000
Poţi schimba ritmul dacă ieşi din reflectoare.
10:14
OK? ChangeSchimbare the rhythmritm, so it's even.
69
596000
4000
În regulă? Schimbi ritmul, să fie egal.
10:18
Or you can go back and changeSchimbare the heightînălţime. Now, skillabilitate.
70
600000
6000
Acum, abilitatea.
10:24
But you're boxedcutie in, if you can only do it up and down that way.
71
606000
4000
10:28
So, you've got to go after the spacespaţiu down there.
72
610000
3000
10:37
OK, then you've got to combinecombina them,
73
619000
3000
Apoi trebuie să le combini
10:40
because then you have the wholeîntreg spatialspațial palettepaletă in frontfață of you.
74
622000
4000
10:49
And then you get crazynebun.
75
631000
2000
Iar apoi o iei razna.
10:59
(ApplauseAplauze)
76
641000
4000
(Aplauze)
11:03
Now, I'm actuallyde fapt going to askcere you to try something,
77
645000
4000
Acum, vă voi ruga să încercaţi ceva
11:07
so you've got to paya plati attentionAtenţie. ComplexityComplexitatea:
78
649000
3000
aşa că trebuie să fiţi atenţi. Complexitatea,
11:10
if you spendpetrece enoughdestul time doing something, time slowsincetineste down
79
652000
4000
dacă petreci destul timp făcând ceva, timpul încetineşte
11:14
or your skillabilitate increasescreșteri, so your perceptionspercepții changeSchimbare.
80
656000
3000
11:17
It's learningînvăţare skillsaptitudini -- like beingfiind in a high-speedviteza mare carmașină crashprăbușire.
81
659000
4000
11:21
Things slowîncet down as you learnînvăța, as you learnînvăța, as you learnînvăța.
82
663000
3000
Lucurile încetinesc pe măsură ce înveţi.
11:24
You mayMai not be ablecapabil to affecta afecta it, it almostaproape driftsnămeți on you. It goesmerge.
83
666000
4000
11:28
But that's the closestcel mai apropiat approximationapropierea I can have to it.
84
670000
3000
11:31
So, complexitycomplexitate. Now, how manymulți here are jugglersjongleri?
85
673000
5000
Complexitatea deci. Câţi dintre voi sunt jongleuri?
11:37
OK, so mostcel mai of you are going to have a similarasemănător reactionreacţie to this.
86
679000
4000
11:48
OK? And whoeveroricine laughedrâs there --
87
690000
2000
În regulă? Şi oricine a râs acolo --
11:50
you understoodînțeles it completelycomplet, right?
88
692000
2000
Ai înţeles complet, aşa-i?
11:52
(LaughterRâs)
89

(Râsete)
11:54
No, it looksarată like a messdezordine. It looksarată like a messdezordine with a guy there,

3000
Nu, arată ca o harababură. Arată ca o harababură cu un tip
11:57
who'scine got his handsmâini around that messdezordine, OK.
91
699000
3000
12:00
Well, that's what jugglingjonglerie is about, right?
92
702000
2000
Bun, la asta se referă jonglatul, nu?
12:02
It's beingfiind ablecapabil to do something that other people can't do or can't understanda intelege.
93
704000
4000
12:06
All right. So, that's one way of doing it, whichcare is fivecinci ballsbile down.
94
708000
3000
Bine. Acesta e un fel de a o face, cu cele cinci bile în jos.
12:09
OK? AnotherUn alt way is the outsidein afara.
95
711000
3000
OK? Alt fel este în afară.
12:14
And you could playa juca with the rhythmritm.
96
716000
2000
Şi poţi să te joci cu ritmul.
12:18
SameAcelaşi patternmodel.

12:35
OK. It's doneTerminat. Thanksmulţumesc.

12:41
Now, what I wanted to get to is that you're all very brightluminos, very tactiletactile.
104
743000
7000
12:48
I have no ideaidee how computer-orientedorientate pe calculator or three-dimensionally-orientedorientate dimensionally trei you are,
105
750000

12:53
but let's try something.
106
755000

dar haideţi să încercăm ceva.
12:55
OK, so sincede cand you all don't understanda intelege what the five-ballcinci-ball patternmodel is,
107
757000
6000

I'm going to give you a little cluecheie.

vă voi da un mic indiciu.
13:14

109

3000
(Aplauze)
16:07
How did you do? Well? OK. The reasonmotiv I wanted you to do this is
165
949000
5000
Cum v-aţi descurcat? Bine?
16:12
because that's actuallyde fapt what mostcel mai people facefață throughoutde-a lungul theiral lor livesvieți,
166
954000
5000
16:17
a momentmoment of learningînvăţare, a momentmoment of challengeprovocare.
167
959000
3000
16:20
It's a momentmoment that you can't make sensesens of.
168
962000
2000
16:22
Why the helliad should I learnînvăța this? OK?
169
964000
3000
OK?
16:25
Does it really have anything to do with anything in my life?
170
967000
3000
Are ceva de-a face cu orice din viaţa mea?
16:29
You know, I can't decipherdescifra -- is it fundistracţie? Is it challengingprovocator? Am I supposedpresupus to cheatieftin?
171
971000
3000
E o provocare? Ar trebui să trişez?
16:32
(LaughterRâs)
172
974000
1000
(Râsete)
16:33
You know, what are you supposedpresupus to do?
173
975000
2000
Ce ar trebui să faceţi?
16:35
You've got somebodycineva up here who is the operativefaptul generator principleprincipiu
174
977000
4000
Aveţi pe cineva aici care are principiul operativ
16:39
of doing that for his wholeîntreg life. OK?
175
981000
3000
de a face asta toată viaţa.
16:42
TryingÎncercarea de to figurefigura that stuffchestie out. But is it going to get you anywhereoriunde?
176
984000
3000
Încercând să înţeleagă toate acele lucruri. Dar te va duce undeva?
16:45
It's just a momentmoment. That's all it is, a momentmoment. OK?
177
987000
3000
E doar un moment. Asta e tot ce e, un moment.
16:48
I'm going to changeSchimbare the scriptscript-ul for one secondal doilea. Just let me do this.
178
990000
3000
Voi schimba scenariul pentru o secundă. Daţi-mi voie să fac asta.
16:51
I don't need musicmuzică for it. TalkingVorbesc about time in a momentmoment.
179
993000
3000
Nu am nevoie de muzică pentru asta. Vorbim despre timp într-un moment.
16:54
There's a piecebucată that I recentlyrecent developeddezvoltat whichcare was all about that,
180
996000
4000
16:58
a momentmoment. And what I do as a creativecreator artistartist
181
1000000
3000
un moment. Iar ce fac eu ca artist creator
17:01
is I developdezvolta vocabularieslexic or languageslimbi of movingin miscare objectsobiecte.
182
1003000
4000
17:05
What I've doneTerminat for you here, I developeddezvoltat a lot of those trickstrucuri
183
1007000
3000
17:08
and I put the choreographycoregrafie togetherîmpreună,
184
1010000
2000
şi să le pun împreună într-o coreografie,
17:10
but they're not originaloriginal techniquestehnici.
185
1012000
2000
însă ele nu sunt tehnici originale.
17:12
Now, I'm going to startstart showingarătând you some originaloriginal techniquestehnici
186
1014000
2000
Acum, voi începe să vă arăt câteva tehnici originale
17:14
that come from the work that I've developeddezvoltat. OK?
187
1016000
2000
OK?
17:16
So, a momentmoment, how would you definedefini a momentmoment?
188
1018000
3000
Deci, un moment, cum aţi defini un moment?
17:19
Well, as a jugglerjongler, what I wanted to do was createcrea something
189
1021000
5000
17:24
that was representationalreprezentare of a momentmoment.
190
1026000
5000
care să fie reprezentativ pentru un moment.
17:30
AhhhAhhh.
191
1032000
3000
Ah!
17:33
All right, I'm going to get on my kneesgenunchi and do it.
192
1035000
3000
17:36
So, a momentmoment.
193
1038000
2000
Un moment.
17:38
(RattlingZgomot)
194
1040000
7000
(Zgomot)
17:45
OK? And then, what I did as a jugglerjongler was say,
195
1047000
3000
17:48
OK, what can I do to make that something
196
1050000
2000
ce pot face ca acel lucru
17:50
that is dependentdependent on something elsealtfel, anothero alta dynamicdinamic.
197
1052000
4000
17:59
(RattlingZgomot)
198
1061000
9000
(Zgomot)
18:09
So, a momentmoment.
199
1071000
4000
Deci, un moment.
18:13
(RattlingZgomot)
200
1075000
2000
(Zgomot)
18:15
AnotherUn alt momentmoment.
201
1077000
2000
Alt moment.
18:17
(RattlingZgomot)
202
1079000
6000
(Zgomot)
18:23
ExcuseScuza me, still gettingobtinerea there. A momentmoment that travelscălătorii.
203
1085000
5000
Mă scuzaţi, încă trebuie să ajung acolo. Un moment care călătoreşte.
18:28
(RattlingZgomot)
204
1090000
5000
(Zgomot)
18:34
A momentmoment -- no, we'llbine try that again. It separatessepară, and comesvine back togetherîmpreună.
205
1096000
7000
18:41
Time. How can you look at time?
206
1103000
3000
Timpul. Cum poţi privi timpul?
18:44
And what do you dedicatededica it to, in exploringexplorarea a particularspecial thing?
207
1106000
4000
18:48
Well, obviouslyevident, there's something in here,
208
1110000
3000
În mod evident există ceva acolo,
18:51
and you can all have a guessghici as to what it is.
209
1113000
2000
18:53
There's a mysterymister. There's a mysterymister in the momentmoment.
210
1115000
2000
Există un mister. Există un mister în moment.
18:55
And it has to settleSettle. And then it's dependentdependent on something elsealtfel.
211
1117000
4000
Şi trebuie să se aşeze. Iar apoi depinde de altceva.
18:59
And then it comesvine to restodihnă. Just a little thing about time.
212
1121000
8000
Puf -- şi apoi se linişteşte. Doar un mic lucru despre timp.
19:07
Now, this has expandedextins into a much biggermai mare piecebucată,
213
1129000
2000
19:09
because I use rampsrampe of differentdiferit parabolasparabole that I rollrulou the ballsbile on
214
1131000
3000
19:12
while I'm keepingpăstrare time with this.
215
1134000
2000
în timp ce ţin timpul cu asta.
19:14
But I just thought I'd talk about a momentmoment.
216
1136000
2000
19:17
(ApplauseAplauze)
217
1139000
3000
(Aplauze)
19:20
All right. OK. Can we showspectacol the videovideo of the triangletriunghi?
218
1142000
6000
Bine. Putem să vedem filmul cu triunghiul?
19:26
Are we readygata to do that? Yes?
219
1148000
2000
Suntem gata pentru asta? Da?
19:28
This is the piecebucată that I told you about.
220
1150000
2000
Aceasta e piesa despre care v-am vorbit.
19:30
It's a much biggermai mare piecebucată that I do exploringexplorarea the spacespaţiu of a geometricgeometric triangletriunghi.
221
1152000
4000
20:29
(ApplauseAplauze)
222
1211000
4000
(Aplauze)
20:34
Thanksmulţumesc. The only thing I'll say about the last sessionsesiune is,
223
1216000
4000
20:38
you ever try jugglingjonglerie and drivingconducere the carmașină with your kneesgenunchi
224
1220000
4000
20:42
at 120 milesmile an hourora?
225
1224000
2000
la 195 km/h?
20:44
(LaughterRâs)
226
1226000
2000
(Râsete)
20:46
The only other thing is, it was a realreal shockşoc.
227
1228000
2000
20:48
I always drovea condus motorcyclesmotociclete. And when I boughtcumparat my first carmașină, it shockedșocat me
228
1230000
4000
am condus întotdeauna motociclete. Când mi-am cumpărat prima maşină m-a şocat
20:52
that it costa costat threeTrei timesori more than my parents'părinţilor housecasă. InterestingInteresant.
229
1234000
5000
Interesant.
20:57
AnywayOricum, balanceechilibru:
230
1239000

În orice caz, echilibrul --
20:59

(Râsete)
21:36
HupHUP. Now, it's dependentdependent on rhythmritm,

239
1281000

21:47
So, there's a rhythmritm to it.
240

Deci are un ritm.
21:51
The rhythmritm can get much smallermai mic.
